2025年も残り１ヶ月を残すのみとなりましたが、10月13日に幕を下ろした大阪・関西万博の大盛況は、今年を語る上で欠かせない出来事に。会期終盤に差し掛かった9月26日（金）には、ドミニカ共和国パビリオンの主催イベントに、オリックス・バファローズのルイス・ペルドモ投手が登場。会場に集った子供たちと、同国で親しまれている“ミニ野球”に興じ、会場を盛り上げました。
人気投手の登場に沸く万博会場
ペルドモ投手が登場したのは、ドミニカ共和国パビリオンが主催したイベント『超・つながるホームラン～オリックス・バファローズと共に、野球を通じてドミニカ共和国を世界につなぐ～』。
多くのファンが見守る中で、ペルドモ投手は子供たちとドミニカ共和国で親しまれているミニ野球「ビティージャ」をプレーし、会場を盛り上げました。
ペットボトルのキャップを、赤丸のストライクゾーンに入れようと奮闘する子供たちと、その挑戦を見守るペルドモ投手。
ペルドモ投手らがプレーした「ビティージャ」は、ペットボトルのキャップとカラーバットを使った“ミニ野球”とも言えるゲーム。「最後にプレーしたのはもう14年くらい前です」と明かしたペルドモ投手ですが、「子供の頃にはビティージャをプレーしながら育ち、たくさんの楽しい思い出が残っていますし、その時間があったおかげで（プロ選手として活躍する）今の姿があります」と言及。
参加した子供たちは、慣れないキャップのコントロールに苦労する場面も見られたが、攻撃側に回ると、キャップを的確にバットに当てる姿も。子供たちのひたむきなプレーを見せる度に、会場からは拍手が沸き上がっていました。

「ボールをバットに当てるのはなかなか難しいんですが、本当に上手にプレーできていたように思いますし、彼らの学びの早さも目の当たりにしました。今後もビティージャの練習を積み重ねたら、打撃も投球にもさらに磨きがかかっていくと思うので頑張ってほしい。多くの人々に出会い、とても楽しい時間を過ごせたことに感謝したいです」
その後は、自国のパビリオンにも足を運び、気さくにファンとの記念撮影などに応じたペルドモ投手は、「ファンの皆さんと触れ合うことが大好きなので、皆さんと過ごす時間は本当に楽しくて、私もたくさんのパワーをもらいました」と、充実した表情でイベント会場を後に。
大阪・関西万博は「いのち輝く未来社会のデザイン」をテーマに、184日間に渡って開催。「人々の強い結束や信頼があり、深い愛情に包まれるような社会であってほしい」と未来に想いを馳せたペルドモ投手。

ペルドモ投手も訪れたドミニカ共和国のパビリオンには、野球にバレーボールといったスポーツに関する展示も見られ、多くの来場者がスマホを手に取り、記念撮影をする場面も。

ーーパビリオンのスポーツに関する展示が目を惹きました。その中でも野球に関するさまざまなイベントに注力されていましたが、ドミニカ共和国において、野球はどのようなスポーツですか？
野球はドミニカ共和国でも本当に人気のある競技の一つで、男の子を授かった母親が「うちの子が将来は野球選手になってくれたらな……」などと夢を膨らませることも珍しくありませんし、ドミニカ共和国出身のスポーツ選手が見せる各国での活躍が、私たちの国と世界を繋ぐ役割を果たしているように思います。今回の大阪・関西万博で、オリックス・バファローズのペルドモ投手をはじめ、ドミニカ共和国出身の野球選手の皆さんにご協力（※）いただけたことを本当に嬉しく思っております。
ーー今年行われた大阪・関西万博を振り返っての思いをお聞かせください。
私たち「ドミニカ共和国」は、（同じカリブ海にある島国で、1978年にイギリスから独立した）「ドミニカ国」を混同されてしまうことも多いのですが、万博を通してたくさんの魅力的な情報を発信できて、私たちにとっても本当に有意義な機会になりました。ぜひ、日本の皆さんも、ビーチをはじめとする美しい自然が豊富で、カカオやサトウキビといった農業が盛んなドミニカ共和国に足を運んでいただけたらなと思っています。
