Uh but big week, SIP, we hit the road, we travel um tomorrow as we head out to uh the Washington DC area to head into um College Park, Maryland. And let’s kick it off. Headline number one, Elijah Pritchette and Gunnar Cula will gear up for a second goound at tackle. Of all the things we’ll be watching in this game on Saturday, that has to be kind of towards the top of the priority list. Knowing probably the strength of Maryland might be those two edge rushers they have, both which are true freshmen. Yeah. I mean, I hate to say things like that’s the game, you know, that’s the key, but it’s I mean, it might be just just how Nebraska handles Maryland’s pass rush in general. Um, and particularly those two tackles. It’s kind of round two for those guys, right? Where it’s round two with Pritchette on the left side and Gunner on the right. It didn’t go too badly last week. I mean, I know we’ve talked a lot about that. So, that stretch that you’ve referred to was was 25 plays, 19 yards, that colored that game a little too much, probably like two full quarters. Yeah, we Yeah, we I I mean, this is just sake of discussion. I have to be careful not to think of that game in terms of just that. There’s a lot There’s a lot Well, the wind played a factor in those. Yeah. And I mean, Nebraska still scored 38, right? So, but anyway, so how will Pritchette do? How will Gunnar do against these guys, these freshman? And it’s not just the freshman. They they have some guys up front that are pretty good, but the guy you’re talking about, or the guys you’re talking about are number nines, I hear Matthysse, and number 29, I think you’re talking about number 29, right? Sydney Stewart. Yep. Okay. Good job, Sean. Those are the kind of guys to watch. I mean, for fans, nine, Sean and 29, those are the guys. Yeah. You look at just the numbers of these two edge rushers. Okay. Um, Sydney Stewart has 20 pressures on the year. Um, six quarterback hits, three sacks, 11 hurries. Zire Matthysse has 18. Um, they’ve hit the quarterback that those that duo, they’ve hit the quarterback nine times. They’ve hurried the quarterbacks 22 times. And they’ve sacked the quarterback seven times. Just those two players and these are freshman. Two true freshman puppies. They’re pretty good, right? Uh so that that’s a tall order for those tall order as a cliche, but it it is that’s something to watch. I mean, that’s what you’re watching, right? That’s what you’re going to be locked in on pretty hard, right? Yeah. Their their overall pass rushing grade are elite. Um you know, also Daniel Windgate, their linebacker, he is a dude. Um to kind of put it in perspective, he has 27 stop tackles, which are tackles of impact in a game. Yeah, that’s a lot. Nebraska’s leading stop tackler is Vincent Shavers and Javin Wright. They have 11 each. This guy’s 27 27 stops. Yeah, Daniel Winggate’s number one, so he’ll be easy to spot. Dan, he’s a junior, so he’s a veteran player. All these guys, I mean, they’re all East Coast guys. Mat is from Philly. This guy’s from Buoie, Maryland. Daniel Winggate. Um, Sydney Stewart’s from Japa, Maryland. Oh, the reason I say is you can recruit out there. There’s talent. The DMV, DC, Maryland, Virginia. Um, and you know, it’s an area like if you go back to like the early Penn State eras of Joe Paternal, they they they cleaned house out there. I mean, they would get Yeah, they did. It’s it’s hard to do because there’s a lot of people that go in there. But yeah, Penn State when they were really peing in like the 80s and 90s under Paterno, they had no real competition in that part of the country. I mean, Syracuse at times was good, but they own the Northeast. Yeah. And plus, and they got all those kind of guys. Plus, Penn State, I think I’ve had coaches tell me there’s a they have about 12 feeder schools in the state of Pennsylvania, you know. So, they got Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh, and Philly. Yeah. So, plus the DMV. Yeah. Plus New York plus New York City. So, Coach Callahan, Coach Callahan, do do you have to tell those guys Gunnar Pritchette this Hey, a lot of this is on your shoulders now or do they just know that? I mean, I think it’s really obvious, but yeah, Maryland is not a team that’s going to blitz a ton. They’re not. You know, like their front four does it on their own. Oh, see that’s scary though because you can go back in coverage. You you commit seven to coverage. Um but they it’s not like they’re a crazy good defense and you know a lot of teams haven’t blitzed Nebraska. What they’ve done is drop seven, drop eight, but then Nebraska will also maybe keep a tight end home and a back home. So there’s not a lot of receivers that go out on the route. No, this is Dana’s this is a challenge. And so we saw that last week. I mean, there there weren’t a lot of there were a lot of people protecting and there weren’t a lot of receivers out there and and things just weren’t happening. The offense was not in a rhythm and these two edge rushers, Windgate and Reic, those are the guys that could get Nebraska out of rhythm in this game, right? So, you want to and I would imagine I was gonna say it, Sean, I think rhythm is gonna be hard to find in this game for Nebraska’s offense. I don’t think it’ll be I don’t think they’re gonna march up and down the field. And in fact, I I did my prediction early in this in the week and I predicted a score that was way too high. Might be a little low scoring this game. Um I mean, Maryland is 11th nationally in in scoring defense. Now, I don’t know what to make of that because they’ve played FAU, Northern Illinois, and Talson, but they’re Yeah, I think that can give Nebraska some problems because of what you just said. Yeah, that stop tack stop tackle number is is eye opening when you see 27 stops for that guy and then their pass rush numbers are eye. To put it in perspective, I’m I’m just going to I I’ve got the Big 10 chart pulled up here. Um the leading stop tackler is 28 in the Big 10. That’s my M Manny Powell from Purdue. Windgate’s number two at 27. Okay. Um in terms of pressures, Cydney Stewart leads the Big 10 in total pressures of 20. M um then you’ve got an Illinois guy, Gabe Jockis, who’s played one more game, has 19. Kaden Curry, Ohio State has 19. Zire Matthysse is fourth. So you guys are pretty amazing. So two of the top four individual pressure players on the edge are on this Maryland D line. That’s against what’s been the biggest liability, if you’re being real, for Nebraska has been just the the uncertainty at tackle. Especially in when you’re talking about playing power conference opponents. They’ve given up 12 sacks in the last two games. I say no more. It’s not. Now, you would agree it’s not just on the tackles, you know, it’s not just their it’s not just their fault alone. Well, next week they’re going to see Anthony Smith from Minnesota who leads the Big 10 in sacks. So, it’s every every week there’s going to be a guy like this. This is the Big 10 now. Absolutely. This is not accurate anymore. No. Absolutely. So that will be something to watch. There’s no doubt how Gunner and Pritchette and then maybe Teddy. I mean, we’ll see kind of what what what it looks like. Corkin Corkran that played a few snaps as that additional tight end. A guy today asked me, “Is there any young guys that you would that are making any moves that could push their way into that conversation?” No. Okay. Not a tackle. Okay. I mean, I didn’t think so either. I I think that I mean there’s four or five guys in kind of a ordered line right now with Tyler Knack being maybe the fifth, Corkran’s the fourth. I mean I think that to get to the six guys a pretty big drop off on the interior. I do think Machock’s pretty good. Um but I still think there’s versatility there where a Corkerin or somebody else could play guard. Yeah, they got their old they got their veteran guys that are going to handle it this year. I mean that brand 20 years. Yeah. And I I mean I’ve been here since not here Lincoln since 1989. And I it’s just it’s just like a a powerful brand in this. So they were giving jewelry back to the bug eaters. Yes. Yes. Powerful brand. I mean, they they they’ve been around with Nebraska football a long time. Yep. All right, let’s move it on. Headline two. Coach Butler and his crew look to rattle a rookie quarterback as Malik Washington, the talented true freshman for Maryland, um, you know, will be the challenge this week. And, you know, you study Washington, he’s been outstanding at times. He’s 6’5, he’s 230. There he is. Um, hasn’t turned it over a lot either. I mean, he’s been two picks. He He’s been fairly effective, but I think I told the crowd today in Beatatric, you know, the first three games, Maryland kind of went to this scheduling model where because they were playing Michigan and Penn State and Ohio State every year in the non-conference, they were just scheduling three wins. So, they played Townsen and FAU and Northern Illinois. Yeah. So, you really couldn’t tell much about their team, but for a team like Mike Lockxley with all a lot of freshman playing, it was the perfect schedule. Yeah, I’d say so to kind of build up the confidence 100%. And then they they go on the road and knock off Wisconsin that all of a sudden you’re like, whoa, that gets your attention. I watched him. I watched him against Northern Illinois and I was immediately struck by that young quarterback. He’s obviously got a strong arm. Think of it this way. What’ you talk about those drops already? 21 drops. 21 drop passes. If those weren’t drops, he he goes from being a 60% passer to a 74% passer. So, I mean, he could realistically be a 70% passer. He’s And that’s that’s the deal there. They have to get to him. He doesn’t Now, you’ve pointed this out and you can do it again. He doesn’t run, right? you know, he has 10 runs for 36 yards and one of those runs was a 17yard run against Towns and so you take out that Towns and run um what is he nine runs for 19 yards. So that’s a critical stat. Yeah. And so like don’t let anybody try to like shove it in there like there’s been people on our board that have like well they’ll probably run him against us. I mean, they haven’t done it all year like like it like it would be way out of the box to just start running this guy like Vince Young. Yeah, I don’t Well, I don’t think he can. Well, his long run in a non-towns game has been four yards. Yeah, I don’t think he’s No, he he could get a one or two or three yard run. I’m not saying that’s not going to happen because every quarterback’s going to get that. Yeah, sure. He He might take off a This is not going to be Aiden Childs running around like a tight. I mean, Aiden Childs was running around like crazy last week. Yeah, it’s not that. I don’t even think it’s Underwood. I don’t think it’s Under Under Underwood took off for a 37 yard touchdown run. I don’t see this guy do I don’t think this guy this guy has that kind of speed against 65 231 pocket passer. He’s got Now those drops get your attention obviously, but their receivers again I’ve seen them when I first saw number four Shalik Knots this year against Northern Illinois, I made a mental note of it. He’s Sean six. Come on. Why do I like him? 63 195. He gets your attention. He’s got five five touchdown catches. Um, so the numbers to remember as I like rule because he always points out numbers. One, four, and five. Those are the guys. One, four, and five. That’s it. Not that’s totally it, but that’s the three main dudes. Yeah. And they have a good tight end, Dorian Fleming. They’ve connected um on 11 out of 23 um 20 plus yard throws. So they he, you know, he he will sling it. You know, 23 divided by five. They’re there. You know, he’s going to throw five or six deep balls in this game. And that’s interesting because nobody’s done that on Nebraska all year. I’m really intrigued. A the lack of mobility. What can Tony Butler do with that? Can you John Butler or John Butler? Sorry. I did my Tony White, John Butler combo. John Butler. John Butler. Um what will he do with the pass rush? I mean, can you just turn Williams and loose? Can you turn McCulla loose? Can you run up the middle with more blitzing up the middle? But most importantly, I’m excited to see somebody throw at Nebraska. No one is throwing at this team all year. Not really. Maryland runs only 98 yards a game. How many yards do they have? Like 460ome total. Well, the highest single individual game a running back’s had for them this year is 62 yards. They rank in rushing. They rank 128th nationally in rushing offense. They the Turpps. They ranked last in the Big 10. You’ve said it, I’ll say it. Good matchup for Nebraska. There’s so many things. And then they drop passes. Yes. You know, that’s not something you count on though. You don’t you don’t go in No, but you just hope that continues. It’s a tendency though like, hey, you know, affect these guys. They’ve dropped a lot of passes 100%. now. And I don’t envision a case where we’re sitting there covering this game on Saturday and we’re saying, “Oh god, Maryland’s running it.” I don’t You know why I don’t say that? Because last week, last week made a huge impression on me. Nebraska shuts down Michigan State’s run game. Mai Frasier, say what you want, Michigan State’s problem wasn’t offense this year. It hasn’t been. It’s been defense. Mai Frasier can run. Nebraska did a great job. 14 and then 14 first down runs for only 21 yards. Good stat. I gotta commit that to memory. 14 runs on the first down for 21. It, you know, the stats that we get access to during the game, if you actually know how to get in there and look around, they provide some great data. That is a that I that game the thing that the game Nebraska vers Michigan State the thing that made the biggest impression on me was Nebraska’s defensive line led by Weri um and even Judy in this case and what they did to set the tone and what is that Sean the first series Javin Wright leaps a blocker that’s Javin Wright the linebacker gets there first now I don’t think he would have got him down But here come then what? 96. Here comes 96. Williams Weri. If you watch that, he slammed Charles. And it was like, “Okay, big boy. This is what you’re getting now all day long.” And that’s what they got. And Michigan State had a right tackle who had not been a starter. In fact, the last game he had played was the Boston College game. Right. And they went after him. Good. And the left tackle struggled, too. But that’s Weneri. Yeah. when and and makulla and and Lenhard, they really exposed the tackles for Michigan State. Yep. Lenhard had a huge sack late. Mcola was in the back field a lot. Now, what is your what you’re seeing or what my interpretation of what you’re seeing is when Mcola confidence escalating. You can see it. We watch the games. We watch every single play. You can see confidence and you got 15 on one side, 96 on the other. And Sean, that’s a good picture. Now you got Lenard going. Keon Davis played okay. Von Von Shaver in right in the middle, right? And I’d even say Dawson Merritt. I said that’s a I I joke that’s a hell of a crew to patrol the border, the line of scrimmage, so to speak. Um I mean that’s a Yeah, it is. That’s a I think it is. There’s not too much getting through those guys. No. I mean last week they were pretty good. Not last week but now see you understand though. You got to put some perspective in this. I mean and I led the charge on this and they might be proving me wrong. We thought they were really vulnerable up front. They didn’t look vulnerable last week. No, the defense kept them in the game. Yeah, they did not vulnerable when the offense was in its worst moment of the year. The defense and special teams dug in. So it looks like they’re in the midst of changing the narrative. But Sean, it’s a week- toeek evaluation. And let’s see it now on the road. Yeah. Let’s see it. Let’s see it again. All right. And if and you know what, Sean, if they play like they did against Michigan State, Nebraska will win this game by double digits. They will win by Yeah. And and they’re still not getting much respect because I mean, I think people don’t want to buy into Nebraska until they absolutely prove it. How about if they win two on the road? I think that will help. Again, I I just think there’s a national narrative or feel about Nebraska. We’ve bought into you before and been burned. We’re not doing it until we’re absolutely sure. I think it’s fair, too. And they’re going to make Nebraska dance in that others receiving boat area until they truly deserve to be ranked. Dance around. One of the guys that John W, the guy from the like the Pack 12 writer, I think he had Nebraska like 16th or something in his poll. John Wilner. Yes. Is that right? Yeah. He has 16th. Yes. Well, maybe see something. And then he had Cincinnati at 17 and he had Ohio State or Iowa State at 18. Yeah. I don’t Maybe he sees something. I mean, maybe he maybe maybe he watches the games. I mean, unlike a lot of voters. All right. Uh again, thanks to our title sponsor, stayhome.care. What a wonderful company and service we’re affiliated with. They provide um care support for you, your loved ones, and you can’t be there. Call them at 4022052233. We’re also brought to you by Ridge. We’re getting ready to travel, Sip and I. I need to get a Ridge wallet. You’ve probably got cards for for restaurants that aren’t even open anymore in your wallet. I got cards for people that aren’t alive. Sean, you’ve handed me a gift card to a restaurant. Like, here just take this one. And I go sip that restaurant closed five years ago. I’m at that age, Sean, where I got people in my phone that aren’t alive. I got Bino Cook in my phone. That’s That’s 59. Used to live in a hotel in Pittsburgh. Yeah, Bino is a great man. But Ridge wallet, you can get any kind of wallet you want. They have traditional leather wallets, the the slim credit card style wallets. Uh things that just make traveling and day-to-day life a lot better and a lot easier. Look at that stuff. Not Yeah, they have a bunch of stuff. I joking. I mean, some of these wallets are like literally bulletproof. Don’t test it. We’re not We’re not going to test it out. Heading to Washington, DC. All right. All right. Well, trips off. All right. What’s the next headline? Moving on to headline three. Nebraska begins back-to- back week road stretch. And it’s interesting in this back-to-back road stretch. you think, oh, this happens a lot, or they they’ve won back-to-back um games on the road um a lot, and that’s not the case. The Minnesota game, by the way, is the 17th on a Friday. So, we’ll have this game the 11th and the Minnesota game the 17th. But Nebraska has not won back-to-back weeks on the road since 2006. And a hat tip to Michael See, our friend, um he’s been on that stat all year. And and he makes a good point. Yeah, you you can assume Nebraska can win these two games, but they haven’t done it in 20 years. What a stat. So, that was a team that played for the Big 12 title with Zack Taylor with a with a veteran quarterback and a a good team. Um, and this these road trips back then were Iowa State and Kansas State. Oh, yeah. That was bus trips, right? So, they beat Iowa they beat Iowa State then Kansas State. I I I think it was 21 to3 they beat Kansas State. I have it in I don’t have it in front. I remember that Iowa State game. I want to say um it was a it was a intense game. It was a night game in Ames. Oh, it was intense. I remember Todd Todd Ble. Yes. That big receiver they had. It was a good win. It was a good win. It’s tough. There’s no magic tricks on these things like people, you know, they want you to come up with some this magical answer on how to do it. There’s there’s no magical answer. I’ll tell you what, though. What I’m seeing from Nebraska, what it takes, and you know this, I’m seeing it now. There’s some dudes playing for Nebraska right now. Credit Matt Rule for they’re not where they need to be roster-wise. They’re not, but they’re getting there. And it’s those guys we’ve talked about on the show already. On offense, it’s EMTT Johnson, it’s Barney, it’s N it’s Na Hunter, it’s Dane Key, although he’s in sort of a two game kind of gone away for two games. Um, it’s those types of guys. Maybe even throw Linden into that. It’s having a quarterback that can make plays in clutch situations. And on defense, it’s those guys. Those guys, those guys like Weri and and Mcola and then in Singleton and Shavers and Wright. It’s got you got to make plays. The one other thing I’d say is think about that game last week when Nebraska looked dead in the water at 21 to 14 and it was a lull. And Sean, we were up there thinking, God, this isn’t going well. 21 to 14 the third quarter. Then what? Jakory Barney. Jory Barney adjusts his route, gets wide open, and Dylan Dylan delivers a strike into the wind. Playmakers, guys who can make plays. That’s how what gets you over the top on the road. Well, just think of the coaches you’re going to be going against. Like look, Mike Lockxley was a Nick Sabin guy, a wellrespected recruiter. Next week, you’ll see PJ Fleck. A lot tougher with Fleck, though. I mean, but you know, like there’s no chopped liver. I mean, you’re going against a well coached team every week. Yeah, with coaches that that have like legit backgrounds. Legit backgrounds. I don’t think Nebraska’s gonna get out coached by Michael Oxley. Um, it’s not like this is not like Daryl Hazel and Purdue or something. No, that’s that’s true. But it but also Fleck is much more formidable. Fleck’s tough. That the game with Minnesota to me seems tougher. Not that this won’t be I am not the guy now. You’re not going to catch me doing this thing where I’m looking ahead at all. I don’t do it. I it’s one I I hate to sound like a coach, but nothing nothing should be easy right now. Um but I like them against Maryland. I mean, yeah, it’s not easy for Illinois right now to win at Purdue. No, I mean every game in this league, unless you’re Ohio State, maybe Oregon. Oregon. How about Indiana? I mean, put Indiana in there. Close. I mean, the Iowa game was 20 to 15. Oh, good point. See, that’s a great No, that’s a great point to back your point. Even Indiana, which you’d probably judge to be the third best team in the league, is in a dog fight at Iowa, which you judge to be about the 10th to 12th best team in the league. When you go into somebody else’s stadium, it’s not easy to win. Nope. Especially when it’s full and there’s some momentum. Oregon Oregon didn’t have a a a walkover at Northwestern, you know. No. So, yeah, this I’m No, this USC got beat at Illinois. As confident as as we kind of sound talking about this Maryland game, I don’t think I hope people don’t hear us as saying this is going to be easy. I don’t think it’s going to be easy. It’s a great opportunity though. Yeah. And so is Min Minnesota. Yeah. I was thinking of that ‘ 06 trip. Then they won at Kansas State the next week. And if I remember right, didn’t remember Ron Prince called like just the most obscure fake punt to start that game. I don’t remember that. He was I mean they were like buried inside the 15 and he called a fake. Prince didn’t last long. Bill Callahan, I remember, called a fake field goal that game, too. You have a great memory. Josh Freeman. Yep. So, 2006 was the last time Nebraska’s won two straight games. Freeman 06 quarterback. Yeah, I think so. Yeah, he would have been. He would have been a true freshman. 2006, the last time Nebraska’s won two straight on the road. Dan McCarnney and Ron Prince were the coaches to really age you. It doesn’t take much. I love I used to love Dan McCarnney was a great guy. Yeah. was upbeat. Ron Prince, not so much. Not so much. Ask Frosty. Frost. Yeah, Frost worked. Frost was a part of Frost was coaching for Kansas State the last time. Nebraska. He was a GA. GA. Yeah, he got Raheem Morris. Yeah, he got a big break. That was Frost kind of a big He was at Northern Iowa. He was I think it was DC and he caught a big break to get into like a power conference. And I want to say James Franklin was on that Kansas State staff back then. He might have been. That’s amazing if you’re right about that. I’m looking back to double fact check myself. Yeah. 06 07. James Franklin was Was he called was the was the was the offensive coordinator quarterback’s coach. So that’s how long it’s been since Nebraska’s won backtoback weeks on the road. James Franklin and Scott Frost were coaching together at Kansas State for Ron Prince. It’s remarkable, Sean. That’s pretty crazy. Franklin and Frost were together. I mean, just think about that in so many different ways. I know. I know. Wild. It’s wild. You could do that. It would be fun to look back at even maybe Iowa State staff and you don’t have to do it now, but Well, and Raheem Morris was the defensive coordinator for Kansas State. I mean, Dave, that was crazy about when you think back to the big like Ron Ron Prince hired some good coaches. Oh, yeah. Those two guys, Franklin and Raheem Morris. Yeah. as your coordinators was really good. They I mean they scored three points. Was it 21 to three? Am I wrong? Hold on. I got it right here. Yeah, 21 to3. That tough game in Ames, it was 28 to 14. And it was a tough game. It was a bear. It was a bear. Um but yeah, that’s the last time. Let’s go move on. All right, let’s You’ve had enough back in the day. Yeah, it was incredible. tricks came to me one time and said, “You know, in our checking account, there’s like $90 a month being pulled out.” Um, maybe solve that. You had a subscription to like the Oklahoma City newspaper. I had a the the one that made no sense was the Houston Chronicle. Why? Why did I have a subscription to the Houston, you know, why? Because it was probably left over from Big 12 days maybe, or something. I was going to say, is there like a Rob Childress article you wanted to read or No, I don’t think the Houston Chronicle was writing about Texas A&M in baseball all that much. Maybe a little bit. Trev it was even well before Trevor. Oh, well be me for a lot of money over the years. They just Well, that rocket money is going to help you with that. All right, let’s go to four. Um, week seven in the Big 10 will bring some monster matchups. Kind of like a day where, you know, if you could be at home, it’d be great. We’re fine with we’re gonna we’re gonna love our day and have a great day in Maryland. But man, what a day to watch Big 10 football. You can track it. Don’t you say, Sean, that tracking it’s kind of fun, too, when we’re in the press box. No doubt. And then, you know, watch it pregame during the game. I’m not interested in the Friday game, though. The Ruters Washington game since Nebraska Nebraska doesn’t play either team this year. So, I’m surprised you’re not interested. Well, we’ll casually watch it as on we’re Yeah, I don’t even know that. Okay, I’m being a hypocrite. I don’t know that I’ll watch it, but we’ll be on like our second oldfashioned by that point. I hope so. I hope so. Yeah, we’ll see. Um, Saturday though, big noon kickoff. Ohio State, Illinois. Oh, monster game. I mean, Ohio State’s favored by 14 and a half. Well, let’s put it this way. So, Joe Clatt back, I don’t mean it this way, but I’m going to say it this way. He kind of backed what I’ve been saying on the show. He says that Ohio State’s defense led by Sunny Styles, Aval Reese, um Caleb DS, number 92 up front, is the best unit in the country. They have the best unit in the nation. I believe that. I’ve seen them twice. I watched them against Texas and I watched them against Washington and I was spellbound. They are loaded on defense, Sean. I mean, and Illinois’s offense has not been what we thought it No, I unless now we have also seen, and I think you’ll back me on this, we’ve seen Ohio State show up in Lincoln for 11:00 a.m. games sleepwalking, right? We’ve seen it here. Well, it’s been sleep No, in Columbus. I don’t know. I’ve seen it here. When have they played when when Frosty played Oh, yeah. The 2021 game when Frosty about got it. The game where Jojo Dolman kind of just balled out. Yeah. They weren’t they were in warm-ups. They were asleep. So, I don’t want to take anyway anything away from Nebraska, but Ohio State didn’t show up for that game. We saw it in Columbus. Will we see that in Champagne? Will they get off to a slow start? Don’t know if it matters. Your other um big 11, another 11 a.m. game is UCLA at Michigan State. Um it’s intriguing for us because Nebraska just played Michigan State and then UCLA’s later on the schedule, but Jerry Newisel was kind of the story of the week. just a little bit a little overdone in my opinion. Well, and it’s fascinating that Tim Skipper is the interim head coach, right? And you wouldn’t even know. You would like Jerry Newel’s been like on the national shows, right? It it almost got over No, it didn’t. It’s it’s overcooked. The story’s overcooked at this point. Let’s see it now. It’s almost like, okay, UCLA, you’ve made a pretty big deal of this now. Let’s see what you got for kind of the the ambush attacks over. Now it’s a real war. That’s true. I mean, they they ambushed Penn State. They did. I mean, Penn State wasn’t ready for whatever, but Nico ran for over a 100 yards. I know. Nico looked good. It looked like the Nico I always talk about that. I like a lot of it was QB scramble. Yeah, it reminded me of when he when he was at Tennessee against Ohio State in the playoff. And late, if you watch that game to the end, it always made an impression on me. In the playoff game against Ohio State, he was running. Cracked his helmet at one point. Kept kept charging. He’s a beast. Oh, Nico can run it now. All right. Indiana Oregon 230 on CBS. What a score for CBS to get that game, by the way. But it’s a West Coast game. And I mean, there’s kind of an unwritten gentleman’s agreement like Fox is not going to air an 11 a.m. West Coast game. They can’t. He can’t. So CBS gets the benefit of this huge game with Indiana and I think we’re all intrigued um to see if Indiana can win out there. Monster game. Uh yeah, it could be very I mean it’s it’ll be very telling. Now what I’m hearing is heavy rain now. That that evens things out, right? Oregon has a it’s turf. Yeah, just rain tends to even things out. I don’t know what that’ll look like. If it was a dry day, I’d take Oregon by 14 plus, but I I don’t know now. I don’t know what that’s going to look like. Northwestern at Penn State is a They’re just in a hot mess at Penn State right now. I What I’m interested for that game is what the stadium will be like. I bet it’s not comfortable because Penn State on FS1 versus Northwestern, I mean, there’s just zero juice. It shouldn’t be. Like, it’s kind of like punishment for their fans to go to this game after what the last couple weeks have been like. I would like to be there just to as a study just to just to experience it just like the beginning of the game when they have a flat start. Yeah. I mean, you’ve been in stadiums like this where that happens and it is so quiet you you can just like one random guy will just start yelling and the whole stadium can hear him. And then like you’ve pointed out so like it was a genius moment for you which I hesitate to use that word but you can hear the plane the planes above like when you have a real stadium and it’s really quiet and you just hear the right because it’s just like so quiet cuz everyone’s just like so like shocked by what’s happening. All you hear is uncomfortable. Will it be uncomfortable? They allow those banner things. I haven’t noticed them this year. I haven’t noticed them either now that you mentioned it. I don’t Maybe not. Maybe people don’t do that anymore. Like it seems like there’s better ways advertised though and have a plane carry a banner. Well, I know the Dolphins did it. There was a fire McDaniel fire Chris Greer. They did. They did it. The Dol I don’t know in college, but the Dolphins. All right, we get it. Sean, you could hear it. You’re just sitting there as Nebraska’s unraveling and it’s all you hear is a plane propeller. some it’s uncomfort. So I don’t know. Can you imagine if Northwestern gets an early lead what will be said verbally toward Franklin? You won’t be hearing playing propellers. It’ll be No. Can you imagine how ugly that I mean that’s a hard Franklin is not one that keeps his head down. He tends to take on people like we’ve seen him like 100%. Like he’ll go at people and this is not good. his um his daughter always walks with him and he’s got an older daughter that might be college age now or high school age, but she walks right with him. So, it’s it’s a tough deal. Oh god, it is. We’ll see what that looks like. Yeah, there’s a lot of there’s a lot of intrigue this week. Well, Iowa Wisconsin. Yeah, that’s that’s I’d say that’s intriguing. Oh, I’m hearing Granowski from my inside sources is gonna play. They’re going to try to play him. He’s got Wisconsin is a three-point dog, but I could see Wisconsin win. In fact, I picked Wisconsin. Did you? I can’t remember who I picked. I don’t know. I I think they’re due for one. I mean, and and this is not a good Iowa team. No. And if it’s Iowa without Granowski, it I think Granowski’s been great, but he’s the starter. I mean, think how much Fickle is going to throw at this game. I would like to think so. I just I wonder where his head’s at. It’s in Madison, though. So, uh Michigan USC. God, that’s a great night. Woo. I mean, that’s breathtaking. Just just seeing the logo, Michigan and USC at night on NBC in the Coliseum, full stadium. Sold out. They said I was reading that they said Nebraska’s game last year was sold out. It was. Was it? It was homecoming. Didn’t look sold out, though. Yeah. There was like the pocket of that student section that might have been a later arriving. Okay. There’s also parts of the stadium they don’t seat. Yeah, because not every seat in the Coliseum is a good seat. They sold out last year. I think it was Northwestern, Penn State, Nebraska. God, I love going. The game was awesome to sit in there in Coliseum. Oh, the LA Coliseum was magic for us. You could see the Hollywood. Yeah, it was a beautiful day as as usual. Most of the time it is out there on this time of year. Right. Right. This time of year is perfect. It was a very LA press box meal. It was like oriental chicken. Remember that? It’s good. It was like such an LA lunch. They play like the West Coast rap, you know, like they’re playing Dr. Dre and old school rap. I was freaked out when they did the Olympic introductions. How many USC alum? Yeah, that was our current USC athletes were in the Olympics because it’s all the international ones, right? Wow. Yeah, that’s I mean there were like 40 Olympians. It was nuts. What a trip. We So Michigan. Michigan. Cheryl Moore said, “Yeah, it’s sold out because we’re bringing fans because it’s Michigan. It got a little ugly there.” Yeah. Lincoln Riley didn’t like that. Like he didn’t say too much, but you could tell he didn’t like it. Anyway, Michigan’s going out on Thursday. That’s no idea who that’s the new thing now. Everyone on these longer road trips, I think all the Big 10 coaches must have got together and and they’ve all agreed to travel Thursdays. Nebraska left Friday at 300 PM. Thursday at 3. I’m sorry. Thursday today. It’s not Friday yet. There today. We need to call. Come on. Um, stay home to help you out here, sir. [Music] Hey, so they pills in the Thursday one. They Yeah, I took my Friday pill unfortunately. I hope that doesn’t I Hey, listen. They Nebraska’s leaving today Thursday at 3 and they get there about 8 8 o’clock. 7. They’ll get their hotel about 8. Bethesda. Bethesda, Maryland. Yeah. Don’t not very familiar with that. Not. It’s funny how the East Coast guy, they just talk so familiar. Like I have no idea like what I mean. I I just know the area. Like it’s like we land in Reagan airport. Okay. Reagan International. Depending on traffic, it’s 25 to 40 minutes to get to College Park. Okay. So, it’s not bad. No. No. Traffic out there is wicked at times. You can fly into Baltimore, too, but there’s no need. I mean, you have to connect and and from what I’ve Yeah, probably have a Ridge wallet if you do that. Yeah, you might need more than a Ridge wallet in the Harbor area. But all right. Yeah, I’ve seen the I’ve seen The Wire. I’m glad I watched The Wire after I visited Baltimore. Okay. Um Purdue, Minnesota, also the night game. Um interested just to see what Minnesota does. Like once again, Minnesota, Nebraska will face a team. I’ve seen enough of Minnesota. They have a stationary quarterback, too. He doesn’t move at all. That strong arm, doesn’t move. So, great game, uh, weekend of games. Um, before we go to headline five, again, thanks to stayhome. Care, the title sponsor, call 4022052233. We don’t even need to get out there a day early. I’m ready. Few people I know look more forward to going on the road than you. Well, it’s an adventure. That’s good. We got to haul you around. It is an adventure. That’s a good way to look at it. It’s a very very healthy way to look at all the airport laughs we get. I mean, we get a lot of laughs on the road. Oh, it’ll be fun. We don’t really have a dinner plan, though, do we? No. Well, we got to figure out what we get through our first order of business then. Well, so u having crab cakes, maybe. Uh there’s a place I’m looking at called Grill Marks in College Park. Okay. And this kind of appears to be like a version of like the Misties for College Park. Like it’s like the Maryland Terrapin themed. Okay. Steak place. Do you think we can get in? Yeah, I checked. I mean, we could. And they’re open late. It’s like a mile from our hotel. So, you Yeah. Would you go out there and get steak on the coast? You could. I’m going to get fish. Get fish or crab? Yeah. But and it it this is not like it’s a it’s moderately priced. It’s not like golden steer priced. I’ve had some rough goes with steak on the coast. I’m not I don’t know. I don’t trust it all the time. You know what I mean? Yeah. We live in Nebraska, right? I mean, a lot of times when you go somewhere, the steak you’re eating is from Nebraska. I know. It doesn’t make much sense to me. I think it makes sense to get something out of the ocean. All right. Well, let’s um odds and ends. I want to hit on this first. Millard South and Bill um Matt Rule was asked about this day at practice. He was Why was he asked about it? Just his opinion. He had no opinion. He didn’t know anything about it. He might have played Babe in the Woods and didn’t want to go there. Yeah. You know what’s your opinion? I mean, I will ask this to you cuz there’s few people’s opinion I would value more than yours. It’s complicated because I do think there were some powers in leadership that recognized this a year ago that something needed to be done because there was because last year we saw this happen. Lincoln High, Benson, and some others forfeited games um to top level teams. And I think some powers that be said, “Hey, this problem is not a one-year thing. It’s going to get progressively worse. Let’s try to do something.” And they kind of let this year go through because of the two-year scheduling cycle. The good news is for next year, they are going to create what’s called the emerging districts for class A and class B. And and these are the teams that obviously like a Lincoln High, like a Benson, they would play only each other. So you might have good nine to 12 teams in this emerging district. Can you play your way out of the emerging district and you have the option to play up if you want to, but you know, if you’re a team, so like you’ll get a team in the emerging district that might be undefeated 8-1, but they’ll only play each other. And there was a thought to like give them like the 16th seed in the playoff, but that would be a punishment. you’d play Millard South in as a so they wouldn’t play in the playoff. Correct. Um to develop your program and kind of So yeah, they they obviously Lincoln High forfeited this game as a 4-2 team and like as the competitor in you and me. That’s it’s tough to hear cuz you know I I think about games and you were in high school where you knew like the team you were playing was better than your team probably. But I don’t remember that. But I got No, I you wanted a shot, right? You know, like when I went to Gross in basketball, we had to play at Lincoln Northeast. Um, had to go up to A and we played a holiday tournament and two years in a row when Northeast won class A, we had to play them and and you know, they they beat us both games. They were the best team in the state. You had to go up where I was in a, you know, but you you still wanted that shot at it. But I get it. Football’s a different game than basketball. I know it’s it’s not you can’t compare football and basketball because you get beat up. There’s a physical nature. Yeah. I just think it’s hard for a lot of traditionalists that grew up in an era where, you know, every team was somewhat competitive. Yeah. You know, like growing up, Brian and South were competitive teams when I grew up and now and now they don’t win a game and and that’s hard for sure. You know, Belleview East had teams that were competitive. Now they’re not as competitive. How’s Belleview West right now? They’re right around like rank eight to 10. They’re they’re they’re in the top 10 probably. How far away from Millard South are they? Everyone’s pretty far from Millard South. I mean right right now I would say it’s Millard South and there’s three or four teams that kind of are next. Westside, West Side Prep, Omaha North, Elcord South. Okay. So Central’s not even in that. Well, Prep just beat Central. Yeah. Hammered. But yeah, Central would be in that group because Central beat Westside. Okay. So there is a really good like next kind of group. Okay. But Millard South, I mean, they have 90% of the division one seniors on their roster in the state. Really? And there’s people out there that like, oh, they should just play a national schedule. Well, who’s paying for it, right? I mean, to take a high school football team and fly them on the road. Who’s paying for that? Who’s paying for that? Not the taxpayers. No. So, you just have to get boosters, right? Yeah. It’s 50,000 bucks. It’s like 50 grand to play. I mean, Right. It It’s prohibitive. Yeah. It’s just you could do like one game a year, but it’s easier said than done to go out and get a national schedule. So, tough deal. Now, the thing to watch will be North Plaid and um Benson are on Millard South schedule remaining. Yeah. And will those games happen? What What would you estimate the score to be for those games? I mean, they all would be 70s something to nothing. Right. Right. That’s not healthy. I mean, it was 70s something to nothing when Lincoln Southeast played Millard South, but you know what would happen? And I’m sure as Millard South would, you know, kneel it or try not to score almost. And that’s that’s almost more embarrassing in my opinion. Yeah, it is. If you’re a competitor going against that, it’s absolutely when you sense that the other team has to back off. That’s that’s hor that’s not good. That’s not It’s nice sportsmanship by the other team. It’s almost But it I agree, Sean. It has a reverse effect. No. games like this like that they can be 28 nothing by the mid first quarter. Yeah. Oh god. Because of special teams and and turnovers and and everything. I mean it unra they they tend the game like that they don’t do the running clock by the way until the third quarter. Yeah. I don’t think maybe they changed that rule but the last I knew the rule was the running clock doesn’t start till the third quarter. Untenable situation. Um, all right. Bill Bellichic. Um, they came out with a statement that all is fine, nothing to see, but it doesn’t seem that way. Um, it seems like quite a mess. The the Hulu documentary show, all access show has been cancelled. I don’t even know where to start and what to say about how badly this is going and how I actually regard this story with sadness. This is a This is an iconic sports figure who’s sort of embarrassing himself at this point. I mean, he’s dating a kid. Well, there’s that. There’s that. And she’s a part of it, right? And they are terrible. and he appears to be now he says I’m going to say this even though I’m reading this statement that says I’m fully committed to UNCC football and the program we’re building here on the off week his there’s stories that say his coaches couldn’t get a hold of him and when they did get a hold of him it was awkward and so now there’s talk of him not finishing the year which I read as quitting I mean so you have this legendary coach that maybe just turned his back on the whole thing. Now, maybe he’s being encouraged to turn his back and maybe it’s a little more complicated than that, but this is Bill Bellichic overseeing a utter disaster. How How would you compare this to when Bill Walsh went to Stanford? That’s more high-profile. That’s part of it. And part of it’s just the world we’re in with social media. Walsh didn’t win big. Um, but he also wasn’t like a big failure either. There wasn’t social media back then and and he wasn’t dating a 24y old and it wasn’t as big a spectacle. This is a spectacle at this point. I again I want to say I want to be very clear. I feel bad for Bellichic. I do. I don’t I feel bad for his family. Can you imagine like what’s he doing today? Well, it’s not like he’s in the Big 10 or the SEC. He’s in a manageable league, one would think. But they Okay, to be fair though, they’ve lost to Clemson and TCU. Like I think everybody expected them to lose those two games. You’re not Clemson was up 28 to three after the first quarter, but Clemson has two wins. They’re playoff team. Clemson was a playoff team a year ago. Yeah, they’re not this year. They were picked to be one preseason. I mean, they have a talented roster. They do. They do. The central the central Florida game though was probably the one that hurt him as much as any because that’s that’s a first year coach that doesn’t have near as much to work with and Scott Frost that Bellich has. Yeah. I I don’t know, Sean. All right. Well, that’s going to be something to watch. Yeah. Do you What are the odds you think he’s back next year? Oh, I don’t I I don’t I think the odds I’d give it a 2% chance at this point. 2% chance? Yeah. I don’t think they can bring him back. Well, and I’m sure there’s like do that, by the way. There there’s things for cause they already have on them like between recruiting violations, practice violations. Well, they they got the NCA went after their quarterback’s coach for giving a pract for giving a sideline pass to a recruit a a recruit’s family. Of all the things that go on in this college football world now, the NCA dinged them for the quarterback’s coach giving out a sideline pass to some parents. Really? which if you go on the sideline during a game Yeah. I mean there can be a cast of characters on I mean when I went on the sideline I’m always like how are some of these people even down here and and you’re worried the NCAA is worried about that? So they’re dinging them for that which makes you wonder if if if North Carolina is telling the say get him on something because we can’t pay him all this money. They owe him 20 million. watching a game from if they fire him with without cause. I wouldn’t even want to watch a I mean I’ve watched many games from sidelines, but I much prefer to be up where we sit. Oh yeah, me too. Like being trapped in a corner of a sideline for an entire game. It’s actually hard to watch the game. Yeah. Back in the day before before internet, I would go down on the sideline and watch some games. It was a different era. Um I remember the last one I watched, it was a Missouri game where Shanley blocked a punt. Remember Andrew? It was Andrew Shanley. It was interesting to do it. It was it was a much different perspective. You gota what you get is a way more you get a lot closer look at the players obviously and how they’re functioning. There was a Missouri this is anecdotal but there was a I’ll always remember that game because a Missouri receiver I swear to God quit during the game just he was running his routes but not running them. He was not running the routes like he was just loafing. I was amazed by it. I was transfixed by it. But anyway, that was a game that Shanley blocked that punt. All right, then finally, um, traveling this weekend. A lot of Husker fans expected to be out in College Park. We were there in 2019. Now, I’m going to check the forecast, but they are they are calling for possibly some rain. Yep. So, we’ll see. And the last time we were there, it rained. Rain. Yeah. I remember that iconic scene of Ronnie Green, Chancellor Ronnie Green and his wife in the rain greeting a victorious Scott Frost off the field in College Park. Yep. And don’t bring your umbrella down to the field. I got accosted by a Maryland official because I opened my umbrella. Yeah, there’s a 65% chance of rain on Saturday. Hello. Um and it intensifies. I mean, right now it doesn’t, you know, they don’t know yet, but there’s a decent chance it’s going to be some kind of moisture. Bring your umbrella, but don’t open it on the field. I got I’m going to bring one with me in a suitcase. Yeah, me too. Cuz we’re going to have to walk. Our hotel is walking distance. Yeah, you only get soaked. But Husker fans that live in DC, Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, they’ll all be at this game. Big game for the program. I mean, I think you’ll have 10,000 fans there. It’s a big one that I I mean, I I got to just say I Nebraska got a great chance to get to six and one. Great chance. Cart before the horse, five- one first. Great chance. Great chance. As John Butler said, pack the defense. Yeah, you should. I hope that group I hope that group comes to play like it did against Michigan State. If it does, like I said, double digit win. All right. Double digit win. I’ll see you at the airport. I’ll see you before then. Yeah, I’m taking you to the airport. I’m picking you up. I was going to say I have Holy Ghost tonight. They’re looking forward to that. And Yep. I got Springfield. So, we got to we got to the hay is not in the barn yet. No, I got four really good jokes. Get ready for that. Save them. Yeah. Don’t tell them to me in case they’re bad. You don’t want to hear me tell I got I Yeah, I won’t. I won’t. There’s one that’s pushing the limits of good taste, but All right. Well, I think you’re in safe hands in Springfield. I think so, too. Well, after hours after hours for Steve Sipple, I’m Sean Callahan. Huskarine postgame live. Reminder, join us at Maryland in College Park. We’ll be on probably around 8:00 p.m. Central is our estimated postgame live show start time. Um, it is our most engaged content and show we do. Get your super chat ready. We hope to see you after the game on Saturday. again for Steve Sipple. I’m Sean Callahan signing off for Huskarine headlines.
