Welcome back to the Horse Diary channel. The Happy Valley night races on October 8 concluded successfully. Our second highlight from the last episode, Lunar Dash, won smoothly. We mentioned expectations for M Newnham’s stable, one of the top three contenders. And shared insights on the innovative training approach for Lunar Dash. This horse’s victory is entirely due to M Newnham’s success in training Lunar Dash to conserve energy. Combined with equipment changes, it led to a smooth win this time. This is also a valuable lesson. Fans can pay closer attention to M Newnham’s training methods. Our key pick, Bienvenue, unfortunately finished second. But tonight’s tips were still of decent quality. We hope they helped Fans win some money. Tonight, there’s a horse worth noting, and we’ll also share Sunday’s tips. Make sure to watch from start to finish. The establishment of Horse Diary aims to share horse-picking insights with racing fans. Together, we aim to turn small bets into big wins. If you like our analysis, remember to subscribe! Sponsored by Sum Supreme Media: Something promising from the last race. I personally believe tonight’s track conditions favor front-runners. Horses that save ground and sprint. Fans can use Embraces, racing tonight, as a benchmark. He has strong finishing power. In that race, despite a fast pace, he ran wide and still wasn’t far off. This proves the track bias tonight. The pace in Race 6 was actually very fast. The winner, Viva Graciousness, moved up a class and won. Although his overall time was faster than the Class 3 1650m standard, the pace was driven by two horses setting a blistering early speed. Storm Soldier and Keen Molly were battling up front. Logically, they should have faded. But that wasn’t the case. So, tonight’s horse to note is Race 6, Number 6, Keen Molly. Keen Molly started from gate 7 with a very quick break. Jockey K Teetan deliberately pushed Keen Molly. The aim was to secure the rail and lead. Due to other horses also vying for the lead inside, he couldn’t immediately get to the rail in the first half. So, he was three-wide at the turn. In the second section, Keen Molly secured a two-wide forward position. At the turn, K Teetan had to pull Keen Molly three-wide again. This cost him a lot of ground. Under such tough conditions, Storm Soldier, who was also pushing the pace, faded badly. But Keen Molly not only held on, he fought back against the closing Casa Rochester. I expect Keen Molly to keep improving. He should deliver a win soon this season. We previously discussed with Fans some racing software available. Including the HKJC’s Betting 3-in-1, Racing Touch, and others. These apps provide a wealth of racing information. Useful for fans to reference. Compared to when I first started betting on horses, it’s a big difference. As a kid, I secretly looked at my dad’s racing paper for betting picks. I always felt one sheet of paper wasn’t enough for proper research. As I grew older, I bought thicker racing papers from newsstands. The content was richer, but still not detailed enough. I often relied on Uncle Piu from the official broadcast and Leung Sik’s post-race show. That’s how I noted horses with good performances. But back in those days, we only had one TV at home. Not only could I not watch racing programs live, even watching recordings later was tough due to time constraints. Replays might only be available a week or two later. In contrast, today’s racing fans are much luckier. Technology has made information far richer. The HKJC has invested heavily in building a great website. Now, you can watch various racing programs online. Even morning workouts are available. Plus, every horse’s racing record and related information is clear at a glance. As long as fans spend a little time, they can do thorough pre-race homework. Before all this online information was available, I collected many racing-related reference books. To enhance my racing knowledge. Two books inspired me greatly. If Fans are interested, they should check them out. One is “Calculate Brilliantly.” The other is a series called “Invincible Horse Secrets.” The five key principles I often mention for picking horses were inspired by these two books. If Fans have established horse-picking principles, combined with the HKJC’s comprehensive website, I believe it can significantly boost winning chances. Besides individual horse records, the HKJC website also helps me find information on horses with the same owner. In the past, I relied on TV program hosts or memorized silks’ colors to know which horses shared the same owner. Horses frequently racing in big events had silks I could easily remember. For example, Mr Vitality in the ‘90s. In the 2000s, the Able series. In recent years, family-based horse ownership has grown. Including the Siu family, the Yeung family, the Kwan family, and others. Without the HKJC’s information, it’d be hard to know their connections. Of course, Fans must be wondering, what’s the point of knowing the owner? How does it relate to picking horses? I think there are two connections. First, knowing where these owners source their horses. Second, if related horses are in the same stable, their competitive drive is likely clearer. If a horse you like is racing and fits your picking principles, combined with this information, your betting confidence can increase. This time’s highlighted pick is set to race in Class 2 over 1200m, Sky Trust from C Fownes’ stable. This is a five-year-old PPG from Australia. His performances have been solid since racing. Rarely finishing far behind. Last season, to compete in the four-year-old series, he ran a 1800m race. That was his worst performance since arriving in Hong Kong. Mainly because the distance was too long. Trainer C Fownes recognized this. So, after that race, he focused on running him in shorter distances. The second reason is Sky Trust has roaring issues. He’s undergone two throat surgeries. C Fownes has shown great care for him. Keeping him after two surgeries. Besides his quality, I believe this group of owners has all their horses in C Fownes’ stable. The Kwan family once won the Hong Kong Derby with Sky Darci. And Sky Field won the Hong Kong Sprint, a major race. So, C Fownes likely takes great care of their horses, ensuring they give their all in every race. My reason for picking Sky Trust this time isn’t just based on these connections. The main reason is that on July 11, 2025, Sky Trust underwent another throat surgery. In Race 042’s performance, I think he not only fully recovered but also showed significant improvement. First, he kept up without fading despite a fast pace. Proving he no longer struggles with breathing. Second, the horse he beat, Wonderstar, went on to win easily in his next race. So, racing in a higher class with a light weight, he has a great chance to win again. Sky Trust starts from gate 3. His gate speed is very quick. With a good draw, jockey E C W Wong quickly secured the rail. Racing in a forward position. With Stanley Express and Wonderstar battling up front, E C W Wong positioned Sky Trust quickly at third or fourth along the rail. Saving a lot of ground throughout. At the turn, I thought he might tire from following too fast. But Sky Trust surged forward on the straight, matching Wonderstar. Without E C W Wong using the whip, he still beat Wonderstar by three lengths. If Sky Trust stays healthy, he can win again this time. This is a four-year-old PPG from Australia. In his debut season in Hong Kong, he finished in the top three in all nine races. Remarkably consistent. The reasons for picking him this time include: First, Juneau Pride has raced five times in Class 3, achieving 2 wins and 3 quinellas. Proving his ability is outstanding in Class 3. He’s still in Class 3 this time, which is a big advantage. Second, in Race 666 last season, Juneau Pride lost to Light Year Charm. After that, Light Year Charm won two more races. Showing that race was of very high quality. After Race 666, Juneau Pride took an early summer break. Though he rested for two and a half months, resuming training in August, he trialed twice in barrier jumps. His pre-race prep is fairly complete. His small frame makes him easy to get fit. Even if he’s not at peak condition, his quality gives him a chance to win a third Class 3 race. Juneau Pride starts from gate 2. His gate speed is very quick. With an inside draw, jockey B Avdulla quickly positioned the horse in a forward two-wide spot. At the turn, jockey B Avdulla was very sharp, moving Juneau Pride to an outside position before the turn. At the final 300m, Juneau Pride surged forward strongly. At the last 100m, it seemed he might win, but he lost to Light Year Charm, who saved ground inside. Light Year Charm went on to win twice more. Though Juneau Pride finished second, his performance was far from disappointing. The final two sections were faster than standard time, proving his sustained finishing power. His ability is very high. I hope he can secure a third Class 3 win this time.
