JASON MILLS ON DIXON WILLIAMS HISTORICALLY GOOD JUNIOR SEASON AT DH CONLEY HS #braves #ecubaseball
season I think any Vikings ever put together. Um, we ended up playing seven 18 or 17 games that year. Now, Dixon’s junior year, we only got to play 14 regular season games and it was the most special season I think any Vikings ever put together. Um, we ended up playing seven 18 or 17 games that year, but I’ll give you a great example. But we’re in the third round and all year we had we only were allowed to play two games a week and they had to be the same opponent because everybody was worried about COVID. And so I basically threw three guys the entire season and it was a kid named Evan Mlan that pitched at UNCCG and a Matty Matas who’s at North Carolina and then uh uh uh Colobby Casease. Um and those three pitched all our games. And so we get to the playoffs and Matty CG’s round one and Evan CG’s round two. And so we’re throwing Caleb who was a sophomore in round three and we’re playing Clayton. And man, he pitched his tail off and we’re up when he comes out of the game. And we go to a senior side armor and then bring in a little lefty that throws like 6770, which is all we had. And so they ended up tying up the game off the little lefty and and uh we go to the top of the seventh and Matty gives up a hit and uh the little lefty and my coach Spencer looks at me. He’s like, “Where are you going?” I said, “I’m going to make a pitching change.” He goes, “We don’t have anybody else.” And I said, “We got one more.” And I walked out there and I pointed at Dixon and he just grinned ear to ear. And I brought Matteas who played outfield into second base and put a JV kid out in the outfield. Um, and Dixon proceeded to strike out the next three. So he he gets up the next inning and leads off. They got an all state right-hander on the mound that’s just throwing pellets up there. And the first pitch Dixon sees, he hits over our batter walk-off. And that was that was who Dixon Williams was. I mean, it was just nonstop just some of the most amazing things you would see. A kid who hasn’t pitched one time in high school comes in and punches out three guys in the top of the seventh in a playoff game. Um, you know, and and he had thrown some bullpens, but he hadn’t really worked hard in it. And then I think he ended up hitting like 13 home runs in 17 games his junior year and hitting like like almost 600. It was it was crazy how good he was. Um, and then his senior year we moved him over to shortstop because we had so many injuries and he got pitched around a lot and it was it was a struggle for him. He didn’t have quite the year he had his junior year. But, um, I think that kind of helped him his freshman year struggling at East Carolina reassessing and and figuring out and how to recommitting with the help of the coaches over at ECU with with coach Godwin and Coach Palumbo. um reassessing what he was doing and how to get it so he could be successful in college and and so and it’s not easy. And so he got to that point um you know and I don’t think he had the year he really envisioned this year. I think he he um pressed a whole lot at the beginning and then as he started getting going I think that was who Dixon was. But, uh, you know, I I think some great things are coming for him in Pro Bowl where he’s going to be a little bit looser and play a lot more
