Uchikawa Seiichi: It’s kind of exciting Uchikawa: It looks delicious Hidenoyama Oyakata: Just keep eating and keep on eating Uchikawa: It’s delicious Staff: When you were active, were you told to eat a lot? Uchikawa: I was originally thin, so the first step in building my body was to eat a lot. So, of course, nutrition and balance are important, but before that, I had to be able to eat a lot Staff: What nutrients were you taking in the most? Uchikawa: Inevitably there’s a lot of meat, and a lot of protein. It’s not that I’m conscious of it, but it’s also because I like meat. Hidenoyama Oyakata: I don’t think other stables have this system, but about three days ago we changed to a buffet style. Food is important after all, it’s important for building up the body, so we decided to change it this way, and I felt that people were eating a lot more this way without realizing it.Until previously, about five people would sit at one table, and side dishes would be placed on top of each other and they would eat from there, but that way, people would leave things on their plates and I wondered why they didn’t eat so much, so with a buffet-style one-plate system, you can take only as much of what you like and eat a good meal, and I think everyone has an appetite this way. Oyakata : In the sumo world, you are treated well and you have to eat, so (staff) please make sure you eat well. Uchikawa: In the Sadogatake stable, while (the stablemaster) is still here , you aren’t allowed to leave your plate empty , so I’m really fine, I don’t need any more Oyakata: The moment it’s empty, everyone should be considerate and ask if you’d like a refill? That’s what’s important, Uchikawa: I transferred to the Hawks in 2011. He came to watch the Climax and the Japan Series, I knew he was being watched from up high . At the time, I had teammates like Matsuda and Honda, who were originally good friends with Kiku-chan (the stablemaster) , so I got to greet them together. At the time, my wife was doing an interview for the sumo referee at the Sadogatake stable, so we were connected there and here , and we started having meals together during the Kyushu tournaments , so I think that’s a common thing for gamblers, but for example, the stablemaster would call Kiku-chan, so I’ll call him Kiku-chan , but Kiku-chan would come to watch the matches, I wasn’t able to hit, but I’m very grateful that you came to support me. I go to support Kiku-chan as well, don’t I? Kiku-chan wins and loses, of course , and when Kiku-chan loses I always think it might be my fault. I know it’s a common thing among gamblers, but I always think it’s because I came. So, of course, I was taken out to eat during the tournament, and before the tournament or on tour, but I felt a little more at ease outside the tournament than during it. Rather than contacting each other and saying, “Let’s decide on a date,” I let my wife, the referee, and Kiku-chan’s wife decide on the date and we’ll do it on this day. It seemed like it would all be decided at the end , so people around me were like, “Please let’s talk it over between the two of you.” Oyakata: People around me were considerate because we were both players. Uchikawa: That’s what happened. Oyakata: April 7, 2017, when this child was born. Uchikawa: It’s the winning ball. Oyakata: You got it, you were happy, weren’t you? You don’t remember, right? Before that day, I went to see Seiichi’s game, didn’t I? Maybe I went to see a Lions game , or we got in touch somehow. Or maybe it was when Hiroto was about 1 year old or something. At that time , I told Seiichi, “I’m coming tomorrow,” and he said, “I’ll hit for Hiroto tomorrow,” and he hit about two home runs. “I’ll hit for Hiroto tomorrow.” I don’t remember saying that , but I was probably 1 or 2 years old at the time. Uchikawa: This ball is the winning ball, so it’s the ball from the moment we won.It was the ball used at the end of the game, and Wada Tsuyoshi was the winning pitcher.Usually, if it’s not a first-time commemorative event , the winning ball goes to the starting pitcher.By the way, we were talking about how I was born today , so (Wada) asked me to give it to him as a present. Oyakata: When you don’t get results, it’s painful, right? And then Seiichi hit a home run. When I was on the ring, he did it, and I was in tears, I guess you could say it was that kind of connection. Uchikawa: That brings back memories. Kosei: I get nervous when I step onto the ring , but do you get nervous when you stand on the mound (batter’s box) in baseball? Uchikawa: Yes, it’s nerve-wracking , I get really nervous, so the only thing I think is how to deal with that tension. We all have a set amount of mental energy, don’t we? I think everyone has a set amount of energy inside them . For example, if you have 10 , what most people say when they’re nervous is, “Just do it as you always do,” or, “Just believe in what you’ve done up until now.” Of course, I’m no scientist or expert , so I think that’s important too, but I think that if you use 3 out of your 10 energy to suppress your nervousness , you’ll only have 7 left. Rather than trying to compete with those 7, it’s better to use everything you’ve got, so I think you should just go for it while you’re nervous. It’s natural to feel nervous, so we use the word “calm mind.” So you’re like, “What is a calm mind?” What does a calm mind mean? When do we refer to ourselves as calm? Seiyu:I have an image of myself as being relaxed and calm. Uchikawa : When you think of a calm mind, I think of the time when everyone is in a good mood, or when you feel really relaxed. You should keep a calm mind. But when your livelihood depends on it, and you have to compete, there’s no way you can be in that situation. I think it’s all about whether you win or lose today. For example, if you win,you’ll go to the makuuchi division, and if you lose, you’ll go to the makushita division. It’s always fun, and if you’re told to go up (to the ring) as you are, you can’t go up, so you’ll definitely think,” I’m going to win.” I think we should first decide what we mean by “calm mind” . I think that feeling nervous is a part of being calm in sumo, because I think that being calm means stepping onto the ring and ready to fight. So I think that you have to acknowledge that you feel nervous or anxious. I get nervous, and the important thing is whether you can do anything in that situation, so practice like it’s a real tournament, and a real tournament like practice. We should also practice like it’s a match, and practice like it’s a match. That is because, to begin with, the part about keeping a calm mind is about keeping a calm mind when you step into the ring . If I were to use an analogy, then I think that you have to enter the ring with a tense mind, and that your feelings and the state of training also have to be in that state. If you think about it, you can’t help but be nervous , right? Master: What I’m saying is that the other person is in the same situation . If you get nervous , the other person will be nervous too, so don’t worry about it . Uchikawa: It’s fine to be nervous, it’s fine to get nervous, it’s fine to think things like , “I get nervous easily,” or “Why am I feeling anxious in a situation like this? Master: The other person also appears calm, but it’s all about how nervous they are, right? Uchikawa: That’s who you are. So I think it’s wrong to try to suppress it by force. For example, in the last WBC, Ohtani and Trout had a final match and it ended in the end, but they threw amazing curveballs and amazing straight pitches, so they wouldn’t have been able to perform as well because they were in a park where no one was watching , but that match to decide the world’s best is held in front of so many fans, and it’s such an ultimate scene that everyone participates. I think it’s the same with the Olympics, and why are such amazing records achieved because of that tournament? I think that people turn that tension into power, including the tension . I’m glad I was nervous, I’m nervous again today, okay, I can do it. On the other hand, if you’re not nervous, you’ll wonder why you’re not nervous. So if you can create a state of tension before it starts on the ring, I think the content will probably change even more. If I had to choose, I hated the exhibition matches more than the main tournament . I was really scared. When it comes to maintaining composure in sumo , the feeling of tension when you step into the ring is normal, so if you think about things with that in mind, I feel like I’ll get better and better if I can think about creating a state where my body moves on its own when I do something, even if I’m nervous. Seiyu: When you’re in a real tournament or when you’re coordinating, your shoulders are always tensed and it’s difficult to hit from a relaxed state, so I just can’t relax and let go of the tension , so do you (Uchikawa) have any ideas about how to do it? Master: It’s just a feeling, but when your posture becomes rounded shoulders , your hip joints and other parts become tight.If you leave them open, your hip joints and other parts will drop down, but it feels like you are producing power while inevitably stiffening parts of your body. Uchikawa: It’s hard for humans to relax.It’s easy to put in force, but it’s harder to release force.So , for example, if you try putting all your force into it once before you finish , instead of going in thinking you have to release it , if you put all your force into it before you finish , maybe it will feel like you’ve released it. Master: That’s true, isn’t it?It’s like a method of relaxing your body in that way. Uchikawa: Try putting in force, and when you release it, Your senses will go away , so why not just go for it ? If you go while thinking, ” I’ll pull it out, I’ll pull it out, if I don’t pull it out I’m putting too much force into it,” you probably won’t be able to compete with your opponent , so when you go into a bout , you have to think that you have to finish even that part, because you have to go into your opponent and you can only see your opponent, so you have to create a situation where you can’t see anything else.So, when you’re at the point where you’re searching for your senses, you’re a little late. So if you put in some force before you start , you might be able to break through. Uchikawa: When you actually entered the world of sumo, you have a vague image of what it’s like, but was there any gap between that and what it’s like? Seiyu: I had an image of sekitori and the like as being cool, so I didn’t know much about the training they went through, so I thought it must be tough. Uchikawa: Is it like that for everyone? It’s really tough to work your way up, it took me seven years to become a regular player, but I couldn’t get a regular player during those seven years, and then in my eighth year I became the batting champion for the first time, but in my eighth year I got the required number of at-bats, so I was recognized for the number of at-bats I had done in a year , and I want to achieve the results of becoming the batting champion in my first year , but I also understand the feeling of not being able to do it, and I also wondered what people were saying to me, what they were warning me about , but I know that something can trigger a sudden change, so I think it ‘s actually a good thing that you sometimes think that working your way up is tough, and because you’ve had experiences like this, when you get to the top you feel like you’ll never be able to get there again , so it’s good , everyone, I’m really envious of your active career, you’ve been doing this for so long and you couldn’t do any more. I thought I had finished, but I still have regrets , like I wish I could have done a little more at that time , or I should have done that at that time.At the time, you thought you couldn’t do any more, but you know that there was something there, so I want you to keep going while you can, until you feel there’s nothing more you can do.But even so, I think later on you’ll think you could have done a little more. Uchikawa: I was able to see and experience the basics of these guys who are trying to improve. It’s been about two years since I retired, so I haven’t had much stimulation for my body, but it was pretty fun. I felt what I think would be the muscle pain I have now , and it was really fun to see them panting as they worked hard at practice. Staff: How was the chanko? Uchikawa: It was delicious , so I really wanted to eat it when I felt exhausted after using my body to the fullest. .Now, my master said that even eating is a form of training, didn’t he? But in my case, eating is the only training I do. I don’t train in a way that involves physical activity, so today was a little bit, but I was able to move my body and eat the chanko, and it was really delicious. Uchikawa: I would like to play baseball, right?
