Fore! Foreign! Foreign! forchech. Good news for the Mets tonight. Kodai Sanga back on the mound for the first time in about a month before he went down with that strained right hamstring back on June the 12th against the Nationals. Sanga had been one of the best in all of baseball. 13 starts pitching to a 147 RA holding opponents to a buck 95 batting average. So his return, Jim, how does it solidify in your eyes the Mets starting rotation? Well, I think you can really take a deep breath with the entire rotation when you get the the ace at the top, right? He takes a lot of pressure off all of the other uh starting pitchers in particular. He can stop a losing streak. Obviously, he could go deeper into games, which is what has been a problem here during the stretch. I also think he helps the bullpen too, right? So, the bullpen you have lesser less need for the bullpen in particular during this stretch when he was out. Well, before the the proof was in the results, right? 45 and 24 record. I mean, 21 games over 500 is impressive, but really after his injury, the you can see the record really stands out, right? Lost 17 of 25, but the pitching in particular, the three runs worse team erra, the innings pitch for the starting rotation is an inning less. It really impacted the entire rotation with just one guy out of there just because of the fact that he was so good, so so consistent. And he he even said it wasn’t even his best, which is hard to believe, but because of that, it really had this snowball effect. And I would throw McGill in there, too. Him being out as well, cuz he was consistent during that stretch. So those two guys missing, it was really hard to make up for it. You know, one of the things we know about Kodi, he really wants his mechanics to be perfect before he steps back out there on the mound, right? So when he went down, you thought, okay, 3 weeks, four weeks, maybe longer, maybe after the All-Star break. the fact that he’s back tonight before the All-Star break, does it tell you that he feels really good about where he’s at? Yeah, I I think so. I think last year, you know, when he went through that injury, there was some uncertainty like you were talking about and, you know, then he had the reinjury. I think because he went through that, that helps going through an injury like that first off and then I think secondly, you know, thankfully it wasn’t as significant or as major as it was last year. I think all of that and coming back before the All-Star break, I think just gives you more of a mental lift teamwide, never mind for him, too. So, yeah, this is what one of those kind of easy things where he comes back, he gives you what he can, then you got another nice little long break and hit hit the ground running in the second half. All right, so Kota back on the mound for the match tonight and the Royals opening game of this three-game series at Kuffman Stadium in Kansas City being delayed a little bit because of rain. The tarp is on the field, but when they do play baseball tonight again, we don’t have a start time yet. Kodai Sanga returns to the mound for the New York Mets. Struck in Got him with the fourth ball side retired. Sanga does it again and he blows the fast by Reynolds for strike three. One, two coming. Struck in half. Got him with the fourth ball. And that’s how Sega’s night ends. Yes. Ghost fork going to be on display in Kansas City tonight. Is Kodi Sanga back on the mound for the Mets. First time he’s been on the mound since June the 12th when he injured his hamstring. He was off the charts before getting hurt. Buck 47 was the RA tied for second lowest in franchise history through the first 13 starts of the season. And right now it is time for storylines. Those are presented by Fanatic Sports Book. Let’s focus in a little bit deeper here on Kodai Sega. He was really good, dominant as those numbers showed before the injury. What went into that really hot start by Kodi? You know, I I think mostly was the obviously the ghost fork has been really good, but his ability to use what was working that particular night and then used it against the opposing team and kind of read what was working against them as well. So, he, you know, he had that ability to make adjustments really in game. And, you know, that’s what really good pitchers do against the Nationals. The pitch that really worked well for him was that cutter. It’s been a really good pitch, especially against left-handers. You saw a lot of weak contact and a lot of ground balls. So, he upped the percentage uh that game when the cutter and then he had the ghost fork to go to on the swing and miss. He got a a 40% swing and miss rate on the ghost fork. You know, he was able to throw it for strikes when hitters thought that it was going to be a ball and then he got that swing and miss pitch that a lot of times falls right out of the strike zone. And so I think with him, you know, the previous start against Colorado, he didn’t really use the cutter all that much. He used it about 15 to 16% and he used the ghost fork a lot more than that because uh it was he was feeling good with that and he was getting a lot of chase with the Colorado hitter. So it really depends on the lineup that he’s facing and how he’s feeling that particular night, which is what really has made him effective. You you don’t really have a scouting report with him. By the way, I missed I missed that little ghost going across our screen, right, with with the sound effects. That’s always that’s always nice. Uh, by the way, when you get Kodai Sanga back tonight, we know the bullpen has been a little bit taxed, right? They’ve missed Kodai in a big way because of that. Do you push him tonight? How do you how do you deal with him in this one start before the All-Star break? Yeah, I I think that’s one of those that you just kind of feel how he’s going and how how the game is progressing there. I would not be surprised if they limit the pitch count a little bit tonight and then let him go full go when they come back from the break. All right, so it’s going to be Kodi saying on the mound for the Mets. 14th start of the season for Kodai at his first in about a month. Hello everyone, welcome inside Kaufman Stadium alongside Ron Darling. I’m Steve Gelb filling in for Gary Cohen this weekend. The rain delay wait is over and the long wait for Kodi Sang to return is over. He makes his first start in nearly one month after exiting with a hamstring injury against Washington. A big exhale from Mets Nation cuz they need it. Uh looking at what the pitching has been going through since Sang went down with the bad hamstring, it’s been really a tough go. It was nice to see this time around as opposed to last year that Sango really was able to come back in such a short period of time. Only a month for that hamstring and now he gives the Mets more opportunity to have every fifth day a real solid starter with Maniah pitching on Sunday. Well, that’s the key. So, you saw the numbers there. 1.47 RA through 13 starts for Sanga. He’s been great when he’s been healthy this year. Uh what about Kodi Sang’s first start back? He gave the Mets four ratings. Didn’t give up a a run. What was your overall impression? Yeah, well, it’s a shame that he had this injury cuz he he could have gone to the All-Star game, too. I mean, he’s had that type of season so far. You know, I think this is a really good first outing for him. You wanted to see him pitch healthy. The velocity on his fast was down a little bit from what we saw before the injury about a half mile an hour, but I thought his stuff overall was crisp. He got through the first inning there basic he had runs on second, third, nobody out to get through this uh with the comebacker here. That was this the second out of the inning on a cutter and he ends up going. I love this combination. The fast ball up in the zone to Selby and then that split that ghost forth down in the strike zone for a strike three. Second inning, same type of situation. He gets himself into trouble with two outs with two walks. Mauricio, who had a heck of a game over there at third base, made another great play there. And in the third inning, he had guys on base again. Uh so, you know, kind of bending but not breaking, get out of this jam again. Going back to that ghost fork, that pitch as we talked about when he’s going well with that, he gets a ton of swing and miss. And the only clean inning that he had was the fourth. Really good play to end the inning there by Mauricio. Had a couple really soft outs there. Easy ground ball there in the inning and had a strike out, too. So, you know, you look at his overall outing. You know, not a ton of pitches. I think they were trying to limit him around 65 or so pitches. He threw enough strikes. Uh, I think you build on this. It’s a positive outing and didn’t give up any runs there. So, you know, four strikeouts over four innings. I think you take that and hopefully next time he can go, you know, a little bit further, maybe five or six. I think important to get him back before the All-Star break. Just get him back out there on the mount. He’s got a 1.39 erra through 15 starts so far this season. So, a nice come from behind win for the Mets tonight in Kansas City. That just looked like a kind of a first start back. I mean, he he didn’t get the length you wanted out of him. Yeah, but we knew we only had 70 pitches today. So going in, uh, I thought he was really good. First inning, they made him work right away. Second and third, nobody out. He gets out of it. Uh, I thought the fast ball high life. I thought the split was really good. Got him for chase, swinging misses, the cutter, their slider. I mean, everything was like it looked like he didn’t miss a bit there. So that’s a really good sign, especially going to the break and u, you know, and we got a a healthy SA here. It feels back up there. Just glad that I was able to get get out there and get back out get back out of the game healthy. What were you able to do to get out of that jam in the first inning? Yeah, I was a little bit nervous getting back out on big league mound first time in a little bit and those two runners got on really early on and I thought to myself, this is not a good look for me and you know somehow I was able to get out of it and really relieved. Was that a better look for you? Yeah, more better than two runs. How do you feel about the quality of your day in the world? Yeah, there’s some things to reflect on and like things I could have done better, but you know, the biggest thing is I was out there and I’m back in here and I’m healthy. Okay, thank you. Foreign
