WNBA announces expansion and Sophie Cunningham sounds off | Sarah Says So EP 7
Sophie Cunningham who’s like saying it should be that they should put teams in like Nashville and Kansas City and Miami and like not in Detroit and Cleveland like where there like aren’t markets or whatever. Like sit down. Like shut up. [Music] Hello, hello, and welcome back to Sarah Says So, your go-to show for women’s sports news. Happy Saturday, everyone. I know it’s a little bit of a different day this week, but we’ve still got a ton of stuff to discuss as usual. But before we get started, make sure you are following @ Sarah Sayso ETB on Instagram, Twitter, and Tik Tok, as well as wherever you get your podcasts. For today’s episode, we’re going to be talking a bunch about the WNBA, going over that new expansion news, Sue Bird statue, and the Commissioner Cup results. The women’s pro baseball league announced tryyous this week and the Aussl will return Monday in Rosemont, Illinois. So, we’re going to get right into it with the WNBA. So, as I’m sure so many people just like myself are thrilled, the W announced that they’re going to be adding three new teams between um 2028 and 2030. So, those are going to be franchises in Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia. This is super super exciting. Obviously, they added the Valkyries this year, but um it’s just like obviously like very clear proof of how much this league is taking off and how much interest there really is in this league for them to be adding these new teams. And so, I think this is like just absolutely thrilling. Um, the big question that I feel like a lot of people are going to be asking is like, how is this different from the 1998 to 2000 expansion? And I think like it’s pretty easy to think about it in the sense where like if you look at how the W launched, they launched in 1997 with eight teams and then they added two in ‘ 98, two in 99, and four in 2000. But that expansion was really, really fast. Um, and NBA franchises were originally supporting like their city counterpart and some of those franchises weren’t prepared to have and like financially support two teams at once. And so there were teams in Miami, Orlando, and Portland that only made only lasted for three season or three seasons. And Orlando eventually like went on to become what’s today the Connecticut Sun in 2003. But Miami or yeah, Miami and Portland um both ended up folding and obviously like now we know Portland will be coming back soon. But um just interesting if you think about the fact that like we had obviously like the original attempt to expand and like I think it’s really notable that some of the teams that they used to have like Cleveland and Detroit like those are teams that they’re bringing back even though like it didn’t necessarily go well the first time because they know that the issues there were in the execution not in the fact that those were bad markets for a W team or anything like that. And I mean honestly like the overall reaction to this news has been pretty positive, but like then you have like Sophie Cunningham who’s like saying it should be that they should put teams in like Nashville and Kansas City and Miami and like not in Detroit and Cleveland like where there like aren’t markets or whatever. Like sit down. Like shut up. Like I don’t it just like why would you as a prof like a well-known player in the league like use like the time that you’re asked about like this great moment of like progress relief. Like why would you choose that moment to just like shut on like Sophie games sit down. Like she just like pisses me off. Like if you’re going to like have the nickname MAGA Barbie like you can’t be saying like shut the up. Like, oh my god, she pisses me off. Like, it’s just like like why can’t you just like say something positive like instead of just like on it? Like it’s just oh god, she pisses me off. Anyway, um but like I said, so when the W first started in 97, Cleveland was one of those original teams. Um they folded in 2003 and then Detroit ended up moving to Tulsa in 2010 and then eventually became what is today the Wings. And so like that and the Orlando team like Orlando went on to become the Sun and Detroit went on to become the Wings. Obviously like those two franchises are still like historically in existence but those markets themselves don’t have those teams. And so I think it’s really exciting that they’ll kind of like get that chance again. Um the only other times the W’s expanded besides Golden State this year were Atlanta Dream in 2008 and Chicago Sky in 2006. So this is really like a new age of expansion, so to speak. And it’s honestly like I think like they there’s no better time to be doing it. We talked last week about how um how highly valued Golden State is um like rated or like how much the team the franchise itself is worth just in their first year. Um and so I think like with that in mind like clearly like the exponential growth and value of this league is just like so so so incredible. I think this is the perfect time to really be capitalizing on that growth. The Valkyries paid an estimated 50 million for the franchise, while these three new franchises will pay an estimated fee of around 250 million. So, again, just like really reflective of how the league is growing and how much interest there truly is in women’s sport. Um, but just in terms of like the team specifically, Detroit is going to be joining the league in 2029 and they were the first team to really like kind of shake things up in the W at the beginning of the league. There were really like establish like the four or excuse me, three like established teams that were like the considered the strongest at the beginning of the W were Houston, LA, and New York. Um but and then the shot um the Detroit team they went 0 and10 in 2002 but then the coaching switch after that like really changed a lot for them and they beat two-time defending champion LA in 2003 and went on to win in ‘ 06 and ’08 as well. But the Pistons and Shock owner passed away in March 2009. and the Pistons um like the estate of the owner sold the Pistons in 2011 and the Shock were sold in 2009. So it was really like upsetting for Detroit to have like a three-time championship team just go away. And I mean this wasn’t even something that I really like remembered until I was prepping for the show today and like kind of thinking about like oh well what were those franchises like in those in those cities beforehand? Um, so I think like I think it’s exciting for Detroit. Like I think they they deserve a win. I mean I have like one friend who’s a pretty big Detroit sports fan and like after like everything happened with the Lions this year like they they need a win and like I’m I’m happy for them and like I hope that they have like I think that the city is going to embrace this team especially like knowing the history that they have with the league. Um, and in terms of ownership, the ownership group is led by the current Pistons owner, Tom Gors, and then his wife and like a couple other people. So, um, definitely like someone who knows what he’s doing in terms of like experienced ownership, but like again just exciting to see more NBA teams supporting their like female counterparts in the W. Um, it’s not I don’t believe a it’s not a requirement anymore that that has to like be the case the way it was when the W first started, but like the NBA is so profitable and so visible that like it’s the least they could do to kind of like help the W out, so to speak, I guess. Um, but in terms of Cleveland, Cleveland’s going to be joining in 2028. So Detroit in 2029, Cleveland in 2028, but Cleveland was very different in terms is like very different in terms of their W history. They didn’t really have time to like establish a solid like consistent culture really in Cleveland in the seven years that they were a team. Um and they folded in 2003, so much earlier than Detroit, but um the Cleveland hosted the women’s final four in 2024. So there and also in 2007 as well. So there’s definitely like a lot of interest in and around that area for women’s basketball, which a lot of people are saying like will bode really well for the reintroduction of this new league. Um, and the Cleveland team is going to be owned and operated by the Rock Entertainment Group, which is like within a bunch. It’s like it it’s like an overall entity that houses the chairman’s sports and entertainment properties under the rock something called like the Rock family of companies. I don’t even know what that means. But again, similar to Detroit, um the owner of the Cleveland CL Cleveland Cavaliers is going to be basically like the main owner for this Cleveland W team as well. And so, um again, like another person that has like the knowledge of how to like own and operate a professional basketball team. The Cavs have won the Central Division seven times, five conference titles, and then won the championships back in 2016. So, definitely um like a wellestablished franchise. I mean, as are the vast majority of the NBA franchises at this point, but um I think especially for like a city like Cleveland, which like isn’t necessarily like the biggest city or like getting a lot of like tourism so to speak, I think it’s even more important that they have um like a solid partnership with the Cavs in the sense that like the Cavs are like in cities like that, like when you have like a major league sports team, like often times that’s like one of the major like draws to the city, but also like revenue generators. And so I think it’s definitely helpful that the Cavs aren’t like crappy and like have had success in recent years just in order to kind of like help generate some excitement on like that end, I guess, if that makes sense. And then the one that I think I’m most excited about is Philly. They’re going to be joining in 2030. So, I mean, I have been kind of thinking about this being a thing, I guess, since like I think two or 3 weeks ago, maybe two. Um, when Don Staley went on Kylie Kelsey’s Not Going to Lie podcast and they were talking about the possibility of affiliate WNBA team and Kylie had asked Don if um she would like consider coaching and Don had said like, “I think I could have like more of an impact as an owner.” Like the direct quote was, “I’d rather be an owner.” A lot of people think coaching is my best attribute. I do think I’m a pretty good coach, but when I’m an owner, I can probably touch more people. So, I think that’s honestly like a really smart way to look at it from her perspective. I think in an ownership role, she like definitely would be able to have more of a greater impact than like just working specifically with the players. Like she would be able to touch more aspects of the program in the franchise. Um, but unfortunately as of now it doesn’t seem like she is part of that ownership group. Obviously like things could change and develop, but as of now the Philly team is going to be owned and operated by Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment and they’ll like join the portfolio that they have. Um, which apparently is like pretty extensive. I don’t even what brands. Oh, damn. They have like a lot. Okay, so within this like sports entertainment group, there’s the 76ers, the Devils, the Washington Commanders and then like Joe Gibbs Race. There’s like a bunch of like I’m just on their website. They’ve got some random like they’re all just like logos and they’re actually like really small. Oh, Crystal Palace FC’s on here. But yeah. Okay. So, they have like a good amount of like sports teams and sports experience in terms of ownership. The WNBA league release literally just says dynamic global sports portfolio. I was like, I’d love to know what that means. Thank you, WNBA. But, um, yeah, I think that’ll be like interesting to see kind of how that develops because it’s owned and operated by this group, but like we don’t know necessarily specifically like who’s going to be doing what. And I think I would not be surprised if we saw Staley kind of like ending up having a stake in the team. I think that would be awesome. I absolutely adore her. Um there were rumors that or not like rumors like the Knicks had um been discussing offering her like the coaching position or did offer a tour, I don’t remember. But I’m very glad that it appears that she is staying in South Carolina. I think it would be phenomenal for her to have an NBA coaching opportunity. like please do not get it twisted. But it I would be very nervous that if she got hired by the Knicks and they had like not an amazing first year that she would just get fired right away. And like I would hate nothing more than the world like turning on Don Staley. I just I love her so much and she has so much love for South Carolina and I think like it would honestly like be a really big loss for their program if she had taken that next job. So as of now it does not look like she will be doing that. And honestly I’m like pretty pleased about that. Um, but yeah, I do I do think that we can probably anticipate her having some sort of ownership stake in Philly in the future. Um, but we’ll kind of see how all of that unfolds. Um, last little thing on expansion, just like kind of thinking about Golden State. Obviously, that’s the most recent expansion team. Um, so just kind of thinking about how the expansion will compare to Golden State. ESPN had like a really great piece breaking down kind of the entire expansion thing by Michael. It’s either Vocal or Bevel. I’m not really sure. There’s an O and an E. Those can go either way. But so he basically was talking about how um like the Valkyries, there’s probably going to be an expansion draft, but because all these teams launch in different years, their expansion drafts could look similar to Valk to the Valkyries or different in the sense that like it’ll pro they’ll probably take turns making selections and like Portland and Toronto expansion draft details haven’t been released at all, but like there is a possibility that like they could kind of like do multiple teams at once in the sense of like now they have multiple teams being added so they could kind of do it similarly to how the PWHL had Seattle and Vancouver going back and forth in their expansion draft last month. Um but for the 2024 Golden State expansion draft, each of the 12 teams could protect up to six players. Um, and so Golden State basically like relied on established six women and like a heavy international pre presence. Um, and they didn’t like take any huge free agents or like pick any like big like faces of the of the W like at all. And they didn’t when they were taking like in the draft, they didn’t like grab a huge player necessarily. and like they focused more on like building a cohesive unit than like grabbing a star. And that’s really really paid on paid off for them. They’ve been having a great season, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that’s how the other teams are going to operate. I mean, the Golden State GM even said like she doesn’t think this is going to be a blueprint for other teams. It just happens to be what’s working for them. And so I think it’ll be really interesting to see kind of how the W decides to handle this expansion draft and everything. Um, but again, like this news really of these new three teams only was announced on Monday and so like stuff is just going to continue to come out as time goes on, so to say, I guess. But yeah, that’s kind of it for WNBA expansion. Before we continue on with some more W news, we are going to take a brief break for a message from our friends at Playback. Presented by Playback. She is going to be the first WNBA player to have a franchise dedicate a statue to them. So, the storm in partnership with Climate Pledge Arena up in Seattle announced Wednesday that they will be honoring Sue with a statue that’ll be unveiled in August on the 17th at 10:00 a.m. I’m like, I think this is so awesome. Like, I want to see more women in bronze. I don’t even care if they’re athlete. Like I want more statues of women and put them up on like pedestals so that men can’t like grab their boobs and like make the statue discolored like that one that like poor Irish statue. Um like literally like I want I want every woman in bronze like dead like dead ass. Anyway, I’ll get off my soap box, but like literally like when Don Staley got her Satra, I was so freaking pumped for her. But I think this is a really really awesome thing that Seattle’s doing. I mean, if you go to like freaking Wrigley Field, there’s like six or seven statues like all around the stadium. They have like their little statue garden and Gallagher Way and things like that. Like I want that same energy for these women’s teams. And like yes, this is Statue One. Yes, this is the first step, but like it just takes one for like more things to start. And so I’m like really really hopeful that by Seattle doing this for Subird who literally could not deserve it more that more franchises will hopefully follow suit. Um but Sue had like a really nice statement about the like news of the statue. She said, “For over two decades, the city of Seattle supported me both on and off the court. It’s because of this community that Seattle will forever hold a special place in my heart. This statue isn’t just for me. It’s for anyone out there hoping to one day pursue their passions and live out their dreams. I’m thankful to the storm in Seattle for this honor and can’t wait to celebrate with my family, friends, and our amazing fans this August. So, that unveiling is going to take place during a special conference at the West Plaza of Climate Pledge Arena. Ever been there? Couldn’t tell you where specifically that is, but if you’re in Seattle and you want to go, I feel like that’s like public. Like if it’s just the West Plaza, that seems like you could go and watch it. Um, yeah. Immediately following the press conference and the unveiling, fans are invited to enjoy a free community fanfest beginning at 12. It’s encouraged for fans to arrive early and participate in the activities leading up to the Forever Sue game presented by BECU at 3. That’s cool that they’re doing a Forever Sue game. That’s sweet. I like that a lot. Um, but yeah, I think this is really great like not only for Sue as a player, but just like another step forward in like women’s sports as a whole. Um, and I really liked what the Storm president and CEO Alicia Valvanis had to say, too. She said, “Sue’s legacy isn’t just written in championships, it’s woven into the fabric of Seattle. Her leadership transcended basketball and helped shape a cultural shift, one that expanded who gets to lead, who gets seen, and who gets celebrated. Today is the first W franchise to honor a player with a statue. We celebrate not just Sue’s illustrious career, but the standard and excellence of the standard of excellence is future she helped shape for the next generation of athletes, leaders, and advocates. The statue is more than a tribute. It’s a promise that what Stu Sue stands for will keep rising and young people, especially girls, will always see themselves in greatness. I love it. Like that totally like obviously like Yata’s statement like she’s the CEO and like main person. like she’s media trained, we know. But like I loved that. Like you could I like when you can tell like that the front office genuinely cares and you get that a lot more in women’s sports than you do in men’s sports, I think. So yeah, just really I mean I’ve said it probably like 12 times now, but I am really excited for two. I think this is some really really awesome news and I’m excited to see who could be the next statue. Um, but in other news, the Commissioner’s Cup is officially over. That happened on Tuesday. Yeah, Tuesday the 1st. I My brain’s all over the place. But the Fever one, they pulled off a really big upstate upset upstate. Jesus, upset over the Lynx, who were really really heav heavily favored, especially because Caitlyn Clark was out in that game. um she has a groin strain, so she’s been out for multiple games now, and they actually announced Wednesday that she will miss her fourth consecutive game with that strain. Um and they’re just kind of like taking that day by day. But in terms of the Commissioners Cup game, um the Fever put together like a really really impressive defensive effort to win um their first franchise Commissioners Cup and Natasha Howard was named MVP after finishing with 16 points, two rebounds, four assists, and two steals. They had five players score in double figures, including Aaliyah Boston who added 12 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists. And it’s even more impressive when you consider that like the Lynx are a league leading 14-2 this season and they’re perfect 8 and0 at home. And so they like were going to be heavy favorites to win this match no matter what. But like with Clark out as well, they’re um their like favor betting whatever the hell jumped to 8.5 8.5 point like they were favored at 8.5 over the Fever. And so like that’s pretty significant. And like at first in the game, the Lynx had like I think a 13point lead at some point in the second quarter. And like at first it kind of seemed like they were going to be like that 8.5 should have been a lot higher, but they like didn’t come back in the second half the way that everyone really expected it to expected them to. Like they scored 59 points, which were the fewest they’ve scored all season, and they were shooting 34.9, which was also a season worse, which is crazy. They had 16 turnovers. And the um Nfisa Kalia, who’s the MVP front runner, five of those turnovers were from her and that was her worst outing of the season. And so it was very a very interesting game to watch in the sense that like Indiana really like turned it on when they needed to. They kept their defense strong and they did it all without Caitlyn, but also Minnesota just didn’t really look like Minnesota. So definitely an interesting game to watch. Indiana’s win does mean that no team has ever gone back to back in the Commissioner Cup. If Minnesota had done it, they would have been the first team to do that. Um, and like I guess like I feel like a lot of people are like, “Oh, like the Fever like it’s so impressive that they did this without Caitlyn.” Like I agree for sure. Like I think that like I would have obviously like thought the fever would have had a better chance with Caitlyn as well, but like I think it’s really important to like not just gloss over like how good the performances of Natasha Howard and Aaliyah Boston were as well as like everyone else on the Fever that was like really just producing on Tuesday night. I think like if we’re just going to focus on like the Caitlyn Clark being out thing, then that like is really a disservice to those players who did like step up in her absence and like really turn it on. Um, but as for Caitlyn, as of Sunday after practice, she said she was day by day. She said, “Doing everything I can to put myself in a position to play the next game every single time. That’s always my goal is to be available for the next game. doing everything I can with the medical staff to be able to get my body right to be able to do that. But yeah, I feel good just going day by day. And then like I said, they announced Wednesday that she’s going to miss her fourth consecutive game with the groin strain. She’s been like lightly playing in practice and stuff, but the coach said her goal is that she doesn’t want it to be something that like lingers if she if um she like brings Caitlyn back too soon. They want to make sure she’s 100% ready to go and that her long-term health and wellness is at the forefront. So, I mean like obviously you would want any coach to prioritize that, but especially with like your stars, I feel like there are a good amount of coaches that actually don’t do that. So, definitely definitely good to see from um fever coach Stephanie White out there. But in terms of games this weekend in the W, Friday is a holiday, so no games then. And then today, Saturday, you will have two games at 6 and 7 central. At 6:00, you have the Los Angeles Sparks at Indiana Fever. And then at 7:00, Golden State Valkyries at Minnesota Lynx. Then on Sunday, you have three games. At noon, Seattle Storm at New York Liberty. At 300 p.m., Las Vegas Aces at Connecticut Sun. and at 6 PM Chicago Sky at Minnesota Links. So, good amount of games to be watching once you are done with any firework festivities that you may have um on Friday. Um in terms of that is my gosh, losing my train of thought all over the place. That is all the WNBA stuff we have today. But before we wrap up, I have two more fun things to talk about. The Women’s Professional Baseball League has announced Wednesday that they’re holding their first ever tryyouts next month in August. So, those are going to be held in DC at Nationals Park and Nationals Youth Baseball Academy from August 22nd to 25th. And over 600 people have already registered. Um, so that’s like really exciting. Obviously, like I’ve talked a lot about the Athletes Unlimited softball league. Those are very different things. Like, please don’t get it twisted. They are both women’s ball leagues, but there’s baseball and softball, and they are very, very different. So, the WPBL will be launching next summer with six teams and will become the first women’s professional baseball league in the US since the All-American Girls Professional League, which was operating from 1943 to 54. And that’s like if you’ve seen the movie A League of Their Own that is about the All-American Girls Professional League. So they have um like a good amount of like advisors from like that are connected to the baseball world and things like that. They have Japanese pitcher Ayami who became the first women to play in a men’s professional league in Canada in May. and then also a couple former MLB managers on their advisory staff as well. And in May, they actually announced a partnership with the production company Free Mantle, which will produce and distribute game broadcasts, secure sponsors, and market the league among like some other responsibilities. But um I think that’s a really good like move for them just in terms of getting the visibility out there more. I am I do like find myself wondering whether or not they were in any discussions with or had the opportunity to potentially make a deal with MLB and like MLB network the way that A USL did. Um, but of also like I’m not entirely sure how many like if MLB would have like the bandwidth to take on two leagues in that sense. And if they don’t like I’m curious as to what like the like how they came to the decision of which one to pick over the or like if that was even a discussion. I don’t know. Like that’s literally all just like my own random speculation. Um, but I think that these tryyouts are really cool. So, the first part of the tryyout will be at that Nationals Youth Basketball Academy for the first two days. So, August 22nd or first three days, excuse me, the 22nd, 23rd, and 24th. And that’ll be like drills and performance testing and there will be a team that’s like evaluating and making cuts. And then on that last day, the 25th, Nationals Park will host live gameplay and they’ll make final cuts to determine the 150 players eligible for the draft, which will happen that fall. So definitely really exciting. I think um like obviously like with the AUSL things were very different just because like a lot of the players went in right after the College Softball World Series wrapped up and so like there wasn’t necessarily like a ton of time to like change things or not change things, excuse me, like set up like a more extensive draft process so to speak. But like I think that what this league is doing is really really interesting with like having it be drills and testing all to like kind of denote draft eligibility. I think like I wonder like if they’re capping the registration at all cuz like right now over 600 people have registered but I’m curious as to like if that’s the cap or if like more people will be able to and anything like that. And I it’ll be also if they’re doing 150 eligible players and they’re starting with six teams that like at its base would be 60 per 60 like people on a roster per team which feels high to me but I mean if you think about how like in the MLB like you then have your for you cut it down to 40 men like I wonder kind of how they’ll navigate that. Anyway, this is like these are all just things that like pop into my head while I’m reading stuff. Like obviously like I’m sure they’ll announce more about it soon, but those are just like where my those are the places my brain goes initially. Um, but speaking of AUSL, we are going to talk about them really quick before we wrap up. So, as a reminder, that is the Athletes Unlimited softball league that launched last month under the direction of Commissioner Kim Ang, who is the former GM of the MLB’s Miami Marlins and my idol. Love her. Shout out. But, Athletes Unlimited will return for three games July 7th through 9th. So, that’s next Monday. And those all of those games will be in Rosemont. It’ll be um six double headers. So, Monday at 6:00, you’ll have double header 1 with the Bandits playing the Volts and the Blaze playing the Talons. Tuesday at 3:30, you’ll have the Blaze playing the bandits and the Volts playing the Talons. And then that same Tuesday matchup will play again Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. As of now, the standings are like pretty like interesting in the like I mean it’s only four teams but the Bandits and the Towns are both 9 and three so they’re just kind of chilling up there. And then you have the Vaults who are four and eight and then the Poor Blades who are 2 and 10. So, it’s um actually like pretty distributed obviously like with the exception of the toe top teams being tied there. Like the bandits in the towns, you have those two right now at least as like clear front runners and then the Bolts and the Blaze are obviously struggling a little bit. So, it’ll be kind of interesting to see how that continues to develop over the summer and how that will like develop in the future too. Like if in season one like we’ll like from after this like obviously this is season one like if in season two we’ll see like the teams from one that were strong continue to be strong. Um I always just think it’s interesting to kind of pay attention to who is doing what right at the beginning of a league and kind of speculate as to like what could happen in the future with development and things like that. It always just is something interesting to me. But that is all I have for you today. So, thank you so much for listening to episode 7 of Sarah Sayso on this very special Saturday edition.
