Dixon Williams future Hall of Fame pirate um it was an awesome great time to talk to him he haven’t haven’t chatted with him in a while but it was good to be able to catch up on the show and talk about his time in Greenville growing up obviously being a pirate and all the great things that he did here the big swings the great plays and a lot of cool memories a lot of funny stories to talk a little bit about Chase Burns home run his funny new blue commercial with Parker Bird and a funny story behind that and bunch of other cool topics but I really hope you guys enjoy it was a cool conversation um but yeah here we go [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh my god all [Applause] [Music] right welcome back another new episode of the Danny Beal Show this week’s guest is very very special pirate Hall of Famer pretty much at this point seeing as you guys have known him for hundred years it feels like but Dixon Williams Greenville native thanks for coming on the show brother yeah thank you for having me about time it’s been a long time coming since obviously the season ended but we wanted to get you on and uh talk about your journey and the season in particular just because of the bumpy road that it was and the way it ended but uh how have you been since it ended what have you been up to this summer and all that good stuff yeah just been hanging out uh went to a couple workouts about a week after uh the season and then just playing golf right now there you go it’s about it working on the game um there were I guess not highlights but like people saying that you were going to the combine and stuff you ended up not going because you already did the workouts you were just going to go for other stuff but are you comfortable with where you are in like the whole draft thing we’ll get into it later about that whole process but from where you are standing right now like you were pretty much prepared for it excited to go yeah um definitely looking forward to it and I would say I had you know a status quo year wasn’t anything crazy or special but um maybe enough to to be where I want to be in a couple in a month or so um so I feel like the summer help helped me get in a good spot and then the season was just kind of what it was yeah what it was it wasn’t bad i mean it started off I mean bad for the team obviously wasn’t great but you guys finally turned it around you personally was great you were a leader and we’ll get in like I said to that a lot later but in a quick I guess synopsis especially towards the end what was the turnaround like um for you personally too just being able to like elevate your game and kind of carry it i mean the highlights and the plays you had down the stretch were huge but for the team nonetheless being able to turn around like that was pretty special yeah um you know how Clear Water goes like a lot of meetings and um I think really just being away for almost a month like we’re kind of we were kind of I don’t want to say forced to be around each other but like we’re in a hotel like we were all hanging out with each other and just enjoying the time but um a lot of the meetings just consisted of being excited to play every day and show up and then I think we knew that the season was on the line at the conference tournament like um it was it was win or go home and so we didn’t take it serious in that manner but we knew that that was like what was at stake so yeah you’re playing for it yeah um and so everybody was just playing for each other playing to win we weren’t we were not like playing any selfish baseball is what it felt like and I mean a lot of people have told me that looked like a different team down the stretch and it it felt like a different team yeah i think especially this year because every other year you go South Florida to end the season and then you just stay in Florida so it’s like you’re literally like you said in Florida for like if what feels like a month and like you said you’re forced to be around each other there’s no getting out of the hotel and like going out like it is you your teammates your coaches and you get to see your family every once in a while but it’s it’s you that’s your family pretty much and being able to use that I mean you’ve seen Tulain do it the last couple years but like they’re not a good team in the regular season and they just turn it on and play well down the stretch but us being on the side of you have to win to get in was pretty cool to see and again we’ll talk more about it later but I want to get it to get you on just because you’ve been on Holton show but this is a more baseball ccentric i’ve actually been your teammate so it’ll be a little bit cooler but um growing up here and growing up in a baseball town and essentially being the prodigal son pretty much from the get-go like you’re expected to be the guy you and Matas too and what was it like growing up playing with the core group of guys especially in high school and stuff but from the jump from when you started playing baseball at a young age what was it like growing up here and then eventually going to college here yeah so started playing baseball around three in like a with law league and then um you know everybody grows up watching ECU baseball but I never I would say until high school never really thought I was that good to play there but obviously watch Yeah i mean I was I was not good until like junior year um like I was good when I was 11 and then I had the stretch of the big field not good um so seventh eighth ninth grade wasn’t really that good um co actually ended up helping me out a lot and that’s kind of when I was like “Oh okay maybe I can you know play at the next level.” Um and then obviously talked about watching guys like Pack and grew up hitting with Pack um and then Brick House and um Bryson Whirl all those guys just seeing what they did and then Pack was obviously a huge impact in that um seeing him from here and what he did i was about to say was especially in high school was he like were you guys close when you were in high school and he was here or like did you guys at least like acquaintances like hey like when I see you out or like was he helping you hit or like whatever yeah so we both hit at Next Level with Lance and Yeah that makes sense like we weren’t like texting or anything but every time we saw each other you know he was always nice to me yeah um probably did I mean I was a lot younger than him so he was probably like this little twerp yeah yeah exactly i was like following him around in there get away from you yeah it comes full circle and he’s he’s the coach um my or last year and this year so it’s it’s it’s really cool but uh but yeah it’s it’s definitely some pressure added when you know everybody you know is at the game and um you just got to be able to calm down the nerves for the game and and just be able to play the game I’ve been playing my whole life um and not make it any bigger than it is did you always want to go to once you found out that you were good enough at least to play at a high level in college did you always want to go to ECU or did was it like you had different offers you were mulling different places or was always I want to stay here yeah so there was ECU and there was I’d actually always grown up wanting to play at Virginia and so really Yeah that was the only other school that recruited me and uh but then as I got older watching the regionals at ECU I was like no way yeah so as soon as they offered me it was it was right on the spot and then from there it was like I kind of forgot the Virginia yeah the Virginia part i guess that makes sense i mean they grew up when you were young and like first getting into baseball they were winning all the time top five every year so it was like yeah that was kind of the the spotlight and then ECU started really you know hosting regionals every year and it was like holy cow this place is Yeah unbelievable i couldn’t imagine you with the loose helmet always falling off running around the bases this way Virginia goes so annoying we got some loose helmets i still remember that when uh every dude teal hit the Yeah and then he loses his helmet like out of the batter box and it’s like bro get one that fits that place was because I mean I went coach let me go in in the ninth to play but third I guess it was kind of more of like an experience thing and yeah the ground’s like shaking beneath me i was like this place I didn’t know that place could get it was jumping well I think it also added in like when we played Oklahoma on the Friday game and Trey pitched like it was packed but it was all East Carolina fans so it wasn’t like oo it’s going to be a good environment because we’re playing an about to be SEC team but when Virginia showed up and it was our fans it was like this is like this is legit cuz our fans always travel but I was like “Holy crap.” Like “This is awesome.” Yeah exactly it was awesome at the Conway regional like dude I can only imagine place got rowdy it was It was electric so I’m just glad those young guys could experience that environment and and I know they’ll get back there for sure because it was super cool environment there yeah no doubt no doubt um so going back a little bit before college going to Connley was your first year on varsity the co year like the year that it happened yes I was on JV my freshman year okay so Connley has a freshman team JV and then varsity okay um so I was on JV my freshman year that team went to the state for lost right before the state championship to New Hover with Blake Walston yeah that team was pretty good so um two I was on JV that year and then COVID played it was like six games the I didn’t play the first two or three okay and then we actually played uh Tony again that year he really was at Corinth holders yeah he was at Quarantine that’s right that team was supposed to be unreal yep so they would have been really good they beat I think they mercy ruled us and then after the game is when I started playing every day but I was not playing up until that point cuz they had lost to uh Cam Clon and Moresville cuz they beat us in the final four the year prior in 2019 and then it was Landon vers Cam in the state championship and then Cam beat them and that team know that actually yeah that Cam’s team was not good i’m I mean I’m one here to talk because they beat us but they were they got hot it’s like it’s honestly like the teams that win the conference tournament they just get hot and they got hot at the right time but neither here nor there but what was the experience like obviously everybody knows uh Coach Mullis and and those guys over there but what was it like being able to play for such a great coach and coaching staff and being on a team with some studs yeah it was it was awesome i don’t think I really grasped it when I was there and then you kind of see you know some of the guys going to play a lot of them are still playing college baseball and then obviously you got Matthew who’s um a stud on the mound so it it was really cool and um Coach Mills is a great high school coach but uh but yeah it was it was awesome experience we just kind of could never get it done in the playoffs i was looking it up what was the furthest you guys made it roundwise uh when I was on varsity it was the co year so the third round which was actually the Eastern Finals that year because because it was shortened yeah that’s right and so instead of being three games it was one we lost to Rose I think five nothing so that was a tough Why do Why does Rose own you guys yeah they did for a while man I don’t get it though no not this year that’s a good point connley boys got him about time jeez Louise good lord yeah so I thought Connley was going to do it this year too but I know so did I and I was I was close this is the closest I had been to a high school team just in terms of like knowing the kids because obviously I knew Tucker because of my relationship with Bram and stuff and then I knew Coach Mull because of just being around here honestly and I helped them out in the fall a little bit just like talking to them and stuff and I actually talked to them before the playoffs just because they needed apparently a stern talking to is what Mully and uh Coach Mills said and I mean I they were as I mean what they lost one game in the regular season they were as talented as I’ve ever seen a high school team before it’s crazy um and then you know the game before coin throwers they were down and spot yeah so I was talking crap at seaw wall on that one good as it should be as it should be yeah but it’s the way it goes man glory days um all right well after college or I guess after high school when when did you end up actually committing before you got on campus yeah so I hadn’t even played a varsity game yet i committed my summer after or like right when school started back up like October November somewhere in that time time frame of of my sophomore year so I was 22 21 22 no 21 20 might have been no 19 that early it was co Oh yeah that’s a good point so I was I’m more thinking just because of like so Roselle must have just left yes diet just got here and what role I guess did was it all JP or did coach Godwin help out a little bit or was it which one kind of initiated it how did it go i guess a little bit but I always took talk to Coach Gwin time gotcha um and so talked to went to a camp talked to them for about I would say a year maybe maybe like six to eight months um and then committed like I said I think it was November so I hadn’t even played a varsity game yet and still didn’t really think I was good enough and then um I was probably like 160 pounds in but not even six foot yet so seeing the vision I guess yeah I I guess so glad they did but um but yeah until that season got cut and then started working out like really really knowing how to Yeah so I guess there’s two questions with that one that was still when the rules were like you had when you were that young cuz what’s the timeline on when you can start calling coaches isn’t it like when you’re like a junior maybe or something like that that’s when they can call you i think like you could call them and they could answer Oh that’s right that’s right they can’t call you that’s right that’s what it is yeah yeah cuz I remember it yeah they had to like text your college coach and be like “Hey he needs to be around his phone at this.” Yeah like it’s just it’s it’s a whole thing it was a whole process so we had like a weekly time set up i would call him every time website i actually still get the reminders on my phone it’s like call no way yeah I got a Jeez dude it’s been six years god every every uh I think it’s Monday that’s so funny i get that reminder you should tell them that that’s funny um I guess the in the I’m bring this up just because of the whole Coastal Carolina thing and they have a couple guys that are on their team now playing so well that went to their camp was the first time that they noticed you or at least like started talking to you or showed any interest from when you went to their camp yeah if I I think if I wouldn’t have gone to the camp they really wouldn’t have you know all the kids listening there you go um and I know they say like some schools get commits to go to the camp to say like right these these certain amount of numbers have committed um but yeah I think going to the camp is your best shot at getting looked at for sure i think picking the right one too like there’s obviously different camps but going and performing is an imperative too like you can’t just go and just like be average like you got to show out and actually play as up to your standard and and you’re going to have some I like I never went to a I never did a showcase like pro style trial for perfect game or PBR never did one of those um not saying they’re bad in a way i know they do their whole ranking system or whatever but when you know you’re ready to go to a camp um I think that that’s the best way to to do it i guess you kind of answered that question this question already but was there ever a thought of like the draft before college uh there yeah there was really um yeah I had a really good junior year senior year was kind of a down year i had kind of had like a something going on with my shoulder which kind of had a funk with my swing um didn’t have a I mean I didn’t hit bad like 380 or something but it was just not a it wasn’t wasn’t bad i only hit like 380 or something it’s not a big deal um I’m sure what junior year you hit like 430 or something crazy like that uh 500 yeah you hit 500 i think it was 4 right at 490 yeah that’s not Yeah that’s not bad so uh wasn’t that year so it was Yeah so that was your senior year you would never have been Yeah there’s no way yeah um and then coach Gotwin you know came with us and we talked about it and he kind of laid out what they had and um I told him a number and stuck to it so nice i I was about to say cuz I It’s different with every guy like I know I’ve had some guys on where it wasn’t even a thought like I know when Gavin came on he told Coach G like from the jump before the draft that hey I’m coming then he actually got drafted and he still was like I’m not going i’m And there were other guys where they had to think about it um I know Logan Oppo a few years ago or I guess when I was I was sailor’s class i was 20 fall of 2018 he ended up getting drafted and he’s the Angels catcher now but just experiences like that um well my mine was a little weird because somehow I told my guy what my number was he was like “This team is close but not really there.” And so my name actually ended up getting taken out and I don’t I found out years later that it shouldn’t happen like that like I still should have been in yeah for no taken out no doubt it was a weird situation like kind of what I said with the draft it’s just it’s a whole different ball game and um that’s ultimately why I ended up switching people but it was a it was a whole different ordeal because I found out later it’s not supposed to happen like that no sure isn’t sure isn’t but um but yeah you live and you learn yeah now you know that’s right now you know now you got Yeah it helped me out um like I said God’s timing so it all worked out no kidding dude glad I was i think I needed to come to school it definitely helped me mature a lot that leads into the next point freshman fall um I have never at least in the new age Coach Gin I have never seen him so hard on somebody in their freshman fall and I know that’s because he expected a lot out of you he knew how good you could be he knew you grew up here so there’s added pressure because he had already gone through with Pack but God there were sometimes I felt so bad for you dude yeah yeah yeah and I mean he would talk to me he’d be like he’s like “Hey man like I know you can handle it.” So that was kind of you know he would double back after he would say something that he probably didn’t want to or at times but um but no I deserved it and my parents you know they knew it was it was bad um it was very yeah he had had a talk with them um and so I ended up ultimately having to talk with my parents after that fall just because it was like he was like I don’t even know if he wants to play baseball anymore um based on the way that that whole fall went but uh but yeah definitely didn’t start off the way I wanted it to and um got my doors kicked in a little bit i don’t know but I I think that’s the way it goes different people handle it different ways like you always have like the fall American talks or the like if you go in and like the world on fire right away there’s a super high expectation but for you like there was a high expectation before you even like stepped on the field already because it was like “Oh he’s from here he’s got to be good right?” And so I think and even there were teammates and I think even JC would admit it if you asked him he was hard on you too and he was almost kind of like an [ __ ] yeah like he was not like cool or like it was almost like borderline bullying and but I think looking back on it leaning on those guys and kind of learning through that stuff it’s not I I I think that you were able to lean on us after you learned that we wanted what was best for you too even when we did treat you kind of like crap sometimes because you needed it but it was cool to see you develop and like you said I I vividly remember it when you came back to was like hey I talked to my parents like I’m going to be different now yeah um it was actually the day after I talked to my dad he was like you know kind of the same thing I had said with Clip he’s like he’s like “We don’t we don’t quit at anything we’ve never done that he’s never allowed me to quit a basketball team whatever it was if I committed to something he was like “You’re going to do it.” And he’s like “Um and he actually played golf at UNCW ended up uh quitting because of the coach.” And so he had kind of told that story to me and he was like you know one of the biggest decisions obviously he’s been a successful businessman now but he was like a decision he regretted because his ego got the best of him and and um thought he was better than the coaching and so um he was able to guide me through that and and kind of help me with that but yeah like you said JC all you guys really um JC in particular I just remember him specifically you come back sophomore year and it’s like these are the guys I actually were building me up your boys yeah yeah so it was a break you down to build you up kind of yeah and that’s that’s the way it goes more often than not in college for sure but you played I mean briefly got at bats every once in a while um as a freshman it’s tough just to be put in those situations as you know like off the bench cold it’s especially early in the year when they’re like we’re going to try guys out of different positions and it’s 20° and we’re facing you’re coming in facing a guy that’s either really wild or like 95 with like a wipe out it’s like why are you doing this to me you’re set they brought in that kid 95 their starter was like 88 they bring in we’re up like 10 runs to bring a guy throwing 95 three pitches walking right back so thanks for coming out exactly it was a fun one yeah it and it got to the point where obviously cuz your freshman year was he went to Virginia and that happens season ends you don’t like you said you didn’t get to play much and AAC’s still here he has another year eligibility he ends up leaving which kind of opens the door for you to step in and take on that role but before that was there ever like a thought of doubt of like I’m going to have to sit behind him again dude like this sucks and it’s not like you had not like you lit the world on fire when you actually got in so it was like was it kind of like in the fall was like was there ever doubt of like this sucks like I’m doing this to like or just blaming other people or was it all just like I need to figure my stuff out yeah I don’t think I ever you know I never blamed I would never blame AAC or Coach P for me not playing like I’m missing ground balls and ND that’s on me that’s nobody else’s fault like and I didn’t like to do that but obviously I came back from the summer and you know me and Seaw Wall were kind of battling it out and it looked like there for a while like I wasn’t going to play third so I mean I know we went to Virginia to scrimmage I didn’t play third the first game and so I just ended up you know having to put my head down go to work every day and and even this year like having that mentality of working like you’re not the starter and so um or like you don’t have that own because that’s that’s the way you get where you want to be yeah i think I mean I think the summer was big just because you were surrounded by good players and you you had a good summer like you played with it who was it was Brandon Clark Ras Deli you played with Carter before Carter was Carter yep um he wasn’t I don’t he wasn’t there for that long it was only like a month or so he got bored at the house yeah I think that’s what it was yeah he So I was like I got a present for you today and I was like “Oh gosh is Coach P coming to watch or?” And then Carter gets out of the car i was like “What dude?” Yeah exactly i want to take a quick break from the show to tell you about the fine folks over at Curtis Construction today’s episode is brought to you by Curtis course supporting ECU athletics thank you guys so much but I think being able to being able to go there and kind of get your feet on I feel like every freshman summer is huge just because you’re like “All right finally I’m out of the rains and the shackles that my coaches put on me in the spring i can go play free i can light it up because I know I’m good enough.” And then I can go back into the summer or the sophomore fall with some confidence yeah it’s I think confidence was the the big key there because um like I said coming off the spring it’s like I don’t know if I can really play with these guys and then you you start facing other college players and you’re like that are more I wouldn’t say your level because all college players are good but like like they’re they’re younger guys too and so you’re like okay I can I can hang with these guys and and then you come back to school and and just build off of that yeah exactly um you end up closing out the fall i feel like on a relatively high note like you had some like a pretty good idea that you were going to play going into the spring i felt like you you agree yeah the exit meeting kind of went that way like hey we started today you would be at third base so that was a good talk and then just got to come back into preseason and just Yeah stay at work and over over the break had to put in some work to Yeah and I think the I mean we’ve talked about it to no end about how important the winner is with guys and not screwing things up or changing things or doing too much or doing too little and being able to come back and hit the ground running and I think you did a good job of that and the year I mean the year proved it i mean you hit you played great you had the big season you had the big regional you I mean you had like a homer in like four straight games at one point down the stretch like you played great but what I guess confidence-wise like you were just talking about what was it like as the year went on cuz you finished about probably as good as you could finish in terms of play what was it like on the trajectory of that year playing every day for the first time yeah it was tough i mean a month in I think I’d reached like my breaking point you know I was hitting balls hard and right at like absolute rockets you could not get on base and uh yeah just couldn’t get on base i was like I really wasn’t looking at my average but I was like man I’m just not on base a lot and um and it was it was tough so like it broke me down for a little bit but then kind of leaning on Carter and realizing like that’s not who I am um and the game has a way of coming back to you so it definitely did but yeah not not finding my you know my personality or who I am in four for four or over for four was was a big thing because it’s easy to do that especially when you’re from here and it’s your first time playing as a as a sophomore so it was it was easy to do but I’d say the first month it was like high low high low and I was just riding it back and forth i was about to say riding the roller coaster yeah and it’s it’s not a fun place to be no it’s not but the fact that you found consistency with leaning on the older guys and then like I said like the four homer game you stole home in Clearwater you were one of our best players down the stretch and then I mean we’ve talked about it at the new end but the Burns homer was pretty cool too but I mean it was it was special to watch because we knew what the future held for you because of how cool that sophomore I mean you hit like what 308 310 something like that yeah right around there you played great and turned it on a lot down the stretch but what I guess towards the end too first of all what was stealing home like we we had JP on right before Clearwater and we talked about it a little bit how he he literally was like “Yeah he did it on his own.” I I gave him a little bit of like advice but he’s like “Yeah just went for it.” Well he saw he saw me working he was like He’s like “Keep working at it i was going to let Cam hit i was not going to you know take the bat out of his hand.” Which is the exact exact opposite of what Coach Palumba said he’s like “He did the right thing cuz thank God we didn’t let Cam hit.” Oh no i was letting Cam hit before two strikes yes and then I saw the first two I’d had it oh I had it the bat before and then I was like or the first pitch i was like “Oh I got it.” And um I was like “I’mma I’mma let him hit.” And as soon as he got down 02 I was like “All right.” And coach B saw me kind of get a little shuffle and he was like “Go.” And I just went and uh it was pretty cool moment but it’s tough because you had to turn it around play them right back again so I know right along with those lines of keeping the emotions in check like it was cool moment but let’s get back to we had to try and get back in the in the game it’s tough losing the first game yeah that week’s a freaking grind dude second game yeah it’s the way it goes this year was awesome dude it was like oh my gosh play off day play off day it’s so It’s so easy like when we swept in 22 it was great because it was like you said we like yes play for the off day of course but like we you don’t understand how important the off days are until you’re actually down there because the field is like playing in a pool of lava it is so hot on the field and then when you actually get done you’re like “Oh we don’t have to play tomorrow oh we don’t have to play.” Like it’s just you can you can hydrate and you don’t have to worry about it’s it’s a grind when you lose the one of the first two games same with the regional and it feels like we like doing that um it’s our favorite thing to do but it is nice when you’re just playing baseball every day too like I guess that is the plus side of if you do lose a game it’s you’re always playing yeah you’re not chilling chilling around the hotel just like all right like antsy so that is a nice part of it but yeah this year was super nice yeah I was about to say it’s great you sweep it it’s great it is um I do want to talk about the Burns homer because I don’t think I’ve ever even me personally ever talked to you about like the moment and stuff we’ve seen the hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of videos and pictures and stuff but losing against Evansville that sucks the next day it’s I’ve mentioned it on the on the podcast and on radio a lot about the hitters meeting and how coach God was like I thought he was hitting lead off with how like passionate he was about like firing us up and like I have the only other time I’ve seen him like that was when we faced Kumar and when and when we played Vandy he wasn’t really like that with lighter but when we played Kumar he was like you guys are better than him and he was like that with Burns it was like you’re going to beat him he’s not like he said that yeah before the video he he said all that and then we’re watching the video and it’s just he interrupts it he literally interrupts it and just goes off strike out you’re watching like some of the best hitters in the country just strikeout after strikeout after strikeout and then at the end it’s like three clips of Casey Cook getting a double and a homer and it’s like all right boys like visualize that and so I mean I just remember in the locker room and out on the field like there was not a lot of talk going on like everybody was just super dialed in i think we all knew what was at stake and it’s like Trey versus Chase Burns you’re like that’s how you draw it up elimination on Saturday you’re like this is going to be nuts and the crowds rolling in at for an elimination game at 12 o’clock way before and um getting like 9:30 cranking beers yeah and I’ve I’ve talked about you know the moment um I think I talked about it with Holden but like I’m standing on deck JC walks throws his bat and I like jump over it because he threw his bat so hard because he was pumped up he was so pumped up he worked a walk and I was like “Here we go.” And um I remember taking a slider down and I was like I never do that so like like I was like I’m swinging at that pitch almost 90% not to mention the fact on the video I wanted to say this before you went on every single strike out was on the exact same pitch it was in the exact same spot in the dirt and it was the exact same slider every single time it was crazy shout out Casey Cook for the approach by the way yeah but it was crazy and so it just didn’t get to where I wanted it and I was like “That’s down.” And I just I like squat a little bit and take it and I was like and that was the one-1 count and I was like “Holy cow.” And then I’m like in the box i look out and for some reason Ryan like threw his hand up and I kid you not as soon as I saw it my whole body just went numb and the ball just popped out it’s like the clearest I’ve ever seen a baseball and just it just I didn’t even try to I didn’t even say swing or anything it just like happened it was one of the weirdest moments like where I felt like it was like the it was like it was like God or the Holy Spirit took over it was unbelievable like as soon as his fist went up my whole just like my hands like like the bat should have fallen out of my hand just everything went numb it was the weirdest feeling ever in my life i don’t I don’t think I’ve ever had something like that obviously never performed like that in a moment before but like I can’t even imagine what the like the crowd none even if the crowd nonetheless the noise should have lifted you up the fact that like there was one particular moment where you remember it just all going away like the whole feeling in your body that is like I can’t even imagine it was I don’t remember and then it’s like contact I’m like going around the bases and when I like come around second and do this that’s when I came back i don’t remember anything before that it was like that’s when I came back into I blacked out so and you actually tried to jump out of the stadium when we did the celebration at the dugout yeah the picture you’re literally you look like Air Jordan it’s crazy yeah so I actually my dad got that picture in a little canvas cuz they’re sitting right there oh yeah and so I’m I’m going to try and get like you know maybe something big like be a cool gift yeah that would be sick but yeah a crazy moment i don’t think I’ll ever forget in my life and Ryan still text me like I think this year or something he sent it to me he was like “Never I’ll never forget that.” Cuz I told him that story after the game like we were talking about it he was like he said the same thing he was like “I don’t know why I did He was like “Someone just told me to.” And I I don’t I’ve never seen somebody on second and saw his fist and as soon as I did my whole body went numb i had I mean yeah and the problem is like or not the problem I guess the cool thing is you can go back and watch that video for people that just never heard that story and you you’ll be able to see it too yeah you can you can see him do it it’s like right It’s like right where I was looking for some reason and it’s just his fist it’s kind of It’s kind of funny but Yeah yeah it’s crazy wild cool story want to take another quick break from the show to tell you about our those guys cuz you know we were rolling just it’s it’s the way it goes it’s tough um but yeah people don’t realize like this year Coastal was having a great year um Evansville only team to take a game from Tennessee in the postseason last year like seems like we run into some good teams but I feel like you know it’s going to happen it’s going to happen whether it’s sooner rather than later whenever it is it’ll happen and we will all be there everybody will every single person that has ever Yeah exactly yeah i can’t um Yeah no for sure so after that you went to Newport and I I I don’t know if you’ve ever heard this story either we were in Ethan Nory’s new house down the street from where I live and they had your games on ESPN Plus and you had we would have watch parties to watch you play because of how well you were playing and how cool it was to watch you on TV not to mention the fact that you turned in like Barry Bonds like it was it was Willie Mays in the field and Barry Bonds hit that but it was crazy every single time you came I was like “This is probably a extra base hit.” Like a homer he’s going to make a great play yeah it was it was weird man i was um super dialed into my routines and like and like just my processes every day and and loosened up in the box but really had no thoughts going on and it was the freest I’ve played in a while I would say um and it was it was really cool yeah no you guys won the championship you you clenched it didn’t you with the walk-off yep yeah it was a pretty cool way to end the season that’s not bad that’s not bad um but with that confidence going into last fall I feel like especially with Root and Bristol leaving you were thrusted kind of into a position where you’re not necessarily on an island but you lost I mean you lost all the older guys y um you lost all the guys that were pretty much in your class that played you had some of the younger guys like Seiwa and stuff but at the end of the day it was you and Jake and Riley pretty much for guys that had played pretty consistently i mean you could count Norby too but you guys were pretty much the core of like hey we’ve played every day we know what it takes a little bit was there like a mindset change that you had to go into this year or was it kind of business as usual and treating it like any other kind of leadership process with those guys cuz it was a lot of new guys and young guys so it actually early in the fall tried to be like the vocal guy wasn’t my like suit and just I wasn’t comfortable doing that like I kind of needed to do my own thing and um that’s what was so nice about my sophomore year is like I could handle what I needed to and and the older guys would take care of like what needed to be taken care of but it was like this year I kind of had to take on some of that and early on it was like rough like didn’t none of it clicked for me and then really until clear water is when I kind of just started being like CG told me he had called me told me a story about I guess I’d talked to Irby one time and he was like like your words actually do you know they have an impact on these guys and you’re actually helping these guys so once I heard that it was I just went full like overexaggerating having to talk on the field and talk to the guys in the huddle talk to the guys pre- pitch and like every game I was exhausted and like Oh I bet yeah just I’m I’m like it’s more mentally and physically because you’re Yeah exactly i’m getting I was getting super out of my comfort zone but at the time like I felt like that’s what we needed needed to win so I was I was just doing it and then after that I would I was [ __ ] with Dave so you know Dave’s a little stimulating at times but uh but it would kind of be you know quiet quiet in the room we’d talk a little bit but um just quiet because I was kind of exhausted down the stretch just from doing something way out of my comfort zone yeah i think it gets to a point where everybody that is here long enough and plays to a high level is put in that position where something goes wrong everybody looks at you and some guys that’s their thing that they’re able to kind of just like take it on easily and some guys it’s new and brand new and that’s the way it was for you and I think a lot of the leaders in the past have kind of like a story that you’re talking about when coach G like brings them in they’re like “Hey like so and so freshman um listens they hear you like they listen to the stuff you say and they tell other people about it they tell us about Like I remember last year even two years ago when he brought that up to me about Norby and I remember JC talking about that with you guys and you specifically and like there’s a moment where everybody has that leadership thing where it’s like oh like they actually do listen to me they’re not just like it’s not falling on deaf ears kind of thing and I think it’s cool because you finally realize like okay like they actually do kind of give a crap about what I say and I think it g it gives you that boost of like okay now I can actually do this cuz these guys believe in me and the fact that it makes it a lot easier to perform it doesn’t make it any less tiring but but it makes it easier to do well Coach B kind of I told him this too he like hit the nail on the head early in the year he’s like “If you’re scared to say something to somebody else because you think you’re going to make the same mistake or you’re going to fail then that’s like the problem.” And I mean that was my leadership struggle all along like I didn’t want to say something to somebody else and then be the one to mess up where it’s like no you they’ll hold you accountable when you mess up you hold them accountable when you mess up but like it’s there’s some there some leaders that like when they’re having a good game it’s easy to leave because I haven’t done anything wrong I can tell these guys but when you’re 0 for three can you still tell the guys hey this is what we do and and so I remember during the regional I’m like on deck and Braden Bur if he gets out like you know somebody’s surprised yeah well if he gets out like twice in a row you know it’s it’s a surprise for him so he’s in there like hitting his helmet a little bit everybody looks to me i’m like on deck and everybody looks at me because he’ll want you to say something yeah because I’m like I was like “Hey I was kind of just like “Hey Burst we don’t do that.” And I go on deck go hit come back in and I’m like “Look you are a young guy but these guys look up to you too because because you’re balling.” Yeah you’re you’re a stud dude if they see you doing that like they’ll think it’s okay yeah i’ve I’ve g my bat a little clamp before but um usually don’t try and take out the the cover so let’s let’s try and refrain from that and uh just stay even evenheaded man you’re not going to go four for four every game even though he did it a lot um he’s you’re not going to do it every game it’s kind of like the MJ thing in the last dance when he was like I’ve never asked anybody to do something that I didn’t do or wouldn’t do and you kind of brought up like the mistake thing and I think that’s what kind of gets leaders especially in like younger guys like younger leaders scared is like well if I tell them to do this and hold them to this standard then and then I screw up like what do they think of me and it’s you can’t think of it that way because if you have a healthy culture and guys are treated the way they’re supposed to be treated it’s not like oh why are you telling me this if you’re going to do this it’s hey like I know that you’re you’ve been here you’ve done that but I’m going to hold you accountable if you screw up and I know you’re going to hold me accountable if I screw up so it’s a healthy relationship rather than like one guy telling one guy something to do and it’s not given back um this year it was there was a good job of like I know my freshman year I felt like I couldn’t say anything but Oh yeah for sure like this year it was like I want these guys to be able to know they can say something because this is they’re a part of this team and they’re going to have to be a part of this team this year especially with how how less of older guys we have like you said um they they had to be a part of the team so they had to be able to feel like they could speak up and I don’t think that’s the way it used to be i think we’ve done a good job the last two years specifically of being a lot more inclusive like I know when my early years I don’t it was not like it was the top and that was it like there was no like inclusivity in terms of like all right well I’ve I get yelled at by another guy like I can’t give it back and say like like not give it back in like a hey screw you kind of thing but like it was it was it was the top 12 guys and that was it and I think last year and this year for you guys from what you’ve said has been really good with it’s it’s all 36 or all 40 whatever it is with in terms of including everybody and making sure everybody voice is heard because that’s it’s important and it’s not the way it used to be but the fact that we’re growing and going the right direction is important it’s going to have to be that way with the portal now because you’re just going to have CG’s going to have his core guys because um you need those guys in this day and age but you also are going to need guys from the portal now because of how it works and everything going on but I think that’s good that guys can come in um and make an impact right away because I feel like guys in the past with the portal haven’t done so well DCU because of that because of what just it’s it’s tough to adapt to that when when you’re coming from a school and you might have been the man and now it’s like okay can I say something can I not whereas if you come in there and it’s like okay I feel a part of this team instead of oh it takes me a year to adapt you saw it with Carter like it took him a year to get where he needed to be you saw it um with a lot of guys transfer guys arms are pitchers are a little bit different but position players like um it usually takes a year to get used to that stuff where I feel like it should be a quick transition if everybody feels comfortable saying what they want to i think it’s cuz specifically with pitchers and this isn’t a shot at AK or anything like that but like pitching like the drills and stuff we do like the pre-throw all that stuff like we’re very we’re super close-knit we hang out in the pitching indoor a lot like all this stuff and it’s normal like you throw you throw bullpens like we’re all like super nice to each other we get in each other’s butt when we need to but with you guys like a lot of like the like ND is not the way it goes everywhere else like the stuff that we do position player wise with stretch lift BP ND IO like all that stuff is not the way it is everywhere else like it’s a lot more higher intent higher level stuff that not everybody’s used to and I think that kind of like you were saying creates a level of like almost like scared because it’s like they don’t want to screw up because there it’s a welloiled machine it goes fast and you gota like there’s not a lot of time to get used to it dude it’s crazy when you watch it from the outside it’s like these guys there’s no way these guys know what’s happening it’s a machine but you start doing it and it’s like this is why you know they’re consistent every year it’s like it’s unbelievable man when you’re in it you’re locked in but like outside you’re like “What are they even doing?” Like Coach P’s flipping the fungo so fast you don’t even I do think it’s cool though and this is We’re getting off topic but it’s a good conversation because I think it’s important but I think it’s cool that he has the core guys coming back like I still think it’s cool that in a year where it was down a year where we made a regional because of the conference tournament and a year where you can leave and go get so much money from these big schools that you still have the core group of guys that the names are known around here and it’s the guys that care about the culture and care about the team and want ECU to go to Omaha that are still here and they’re not going and chasing money or chasing a bigger team or chasing an SEC like they want to win here which is important because it’s not where it is or like it is everywhere else no definitely not it’s it’s very important like you got I think those videos were a great idea because um people see all the guys leaving um we don’t need those guys like let’s not worry about Yeah this guy’s entered the portal let’s worry about the guys that are coming because that’s that’s super important and it’s a big deal in this day and age especially no doubt it’s cool that they’re able to at least showcase it a little bit i’m excited that Yeah i think it got the fans actually excited because you start seeing oh all these guys are coming back yeah they don’t really focus on the the poor points of colors report that so and so leaves so and so leaves so and so leaves is like “Yeah well we we got an Orbeez coming back we sew wall so exactly it’s I don’t know i I never like the portal entry i guess you have to cover it for media but who cares?” Yeah i just You’ll find out if you find out if he’s not here on the roster in the fall then then you’ll know he’s gone whatever it is what it is want to take shout out to Brandon Manning for supporting the show you’re the man thanks B man um we talked about this pre-show and this is a little bit more lighthearted what was that new blue commercial dude the one where you’re sliding into Parker’s parents’ bed yeah if you haven’t seen it we’ll link it but good lord that thing is Well actually backtory on that that is Parker’s parents my parents’ bedroom so wait wait wait what wait what yeah so we shot it at my house my parents house so you talk about sliding into you know you’re in your parents’ bed with somebody else’s parents in their bed yeah very awkward wow 10 takes 10 dude get me out of there no kidding no oh my that is I hadn’t heard that before that is really awkward that makes it so much worse than it looks on screen so the snap was like “Get me out of here please.” Yeah for the love of God slide in i was like “Please tell me that one’s good.” Um so yeah it was But they were they were awesome to do that and and help out with the video but it was hilarious parker loved it when it came out i’m sure he did so funny god bless him for being cool with it cuz like all the new blue stuff with like the you hitting and the guy with the mullet and the American shirt and then the new blue commercial where she’s plunging a toilet and you slide on the hardwood and slide into their bed with no power it’s just like oh my gosh dude it’s crazy it’s absolutely crazy they have some good ideas and I knew I knew they were going to do a great job because they did um Leaky Black the year before UNCC basketball oh yeah it’s leaky no leaks in this house so it was they’ve had some great videos before and um their marketing team does a good job yeah they do a good job they’re super funny so I every I told you before every single time I watch it I laugh harder because it’s just so like ins Now that I know that it’s your parents bed makes me I’m going to laugh even harder now it’s crazy it’s absolutely crazy yeah no they did a good job with the the audio i guess the sliding in it’s It’s pretty funny so funny um with I wanted to bring up two things kind of going back to our conversation before the new thing but we had Jake and Riley on gosh end of the fall end of the fall um and we just kind of pre not necessarily previewed the season but just talked about the fall and all the new guys how it was going two leaders that had been here forever and we just kind of talked through everything and they mentioned the whiteboard in the locker room and we hadn’t had at least in my time we hadn’t had a whiteboard in the locker room and you guys kind of had a meeting where it was going pretty rough in the fall nobody was playing good bad attitudes whatever it may be and you guys had a meeting pretty much laid it all on the line everybody said their piece and what they needed to say and then you implemented the this whiteboard in the locker room and they said it pretty much turned around the rest of the fall into mission week and then into the uh into the spring at least what was kind of the thought process behind the whiteboard in the locker room yeah so we kind of you know we have the the vision and um like on the door where we want to win a national championship go to Omaha regional super regional um graduate from ECU all these things but we had never like called ourselves like hey we’re going to be the national champions and so it’s like yeah we say these things but do we really believe it so like we want to start calling ourselves like hey we’re the national champions every single day so we as soon as you walked in the locker room you saw 2025 national champions we all signed it and said like this is what we’re committing to and kind of would rank our days um based on how they went and it was just the fall like BP like pitchers aren’t saying anything when guys are making plays and like so I kind of brought it up like hey if you were here last year for practice like ESPN should have been out there because guys are flying around everybody’s screaming like having a good time enjoying it yeah yeah just dumb plays being made out there and then it happens in the game and everybody is super pumped in the game but we knew it was going to happen we’ve seen it before yeah exactly so it’s like that’s the energy we need for these practices because I mean all the great athletes have talked about it like if you can’t do it there you will never it will never happen for you on the big stage for sure so you can’t expect it to happen you got to go you got to go make it happen yeah um I think it’s important at least from their perspective and I’ve even talked to Riley and Jake about it after the season too and they’ve said it’s it it was a big point in the fall and being able to have the mindset change of practice like you play and bring energy and have fun every single day because you don’t get to do this forever especially me sitting in this chair now having graduated and playing indie ball now like it’s it is some of the best times of your life and you do not get to play forever it’s true um but yeah I I digress it’s it’s it’s good stuff that you guys were able to bring it together and I wanted to get and you b you mentioned it briefly i wanted to get into the regional a little bit just because how awesome it looked on TV but the the environments with the Florida games the Coastal games too where the first Coastal game the score doesn’t reflect how close that game was especially down the stretch because it kind of just blew up but the second game like I that was one of the more fun baseball games I’ve watched just in terms of pitching matchups obviously but like the offenses were like putting pressure and they were continuing continually finding ways to get out of it but in totality I guess what was the regional like were you guys nervous for Florida was it a big name was it like “All right whatever it’s it’s whoever.” What was it like going in especially after you won the first game too going into Saturday against Coastal yeah so um me personally like before the Florida game like super nervous like you know that’s a prestigious program well-known coach obviously and um like in and out we were like booting balls around for sure but like it was it was not good and then we get in the first inning and drop a two spot on their guy and Yeah kind of get some confidence going and it’s just one of those things where like I kind of we had talked with the offense down the stretch like pitching you don’t see pitching win a lot of these games like it’s it’s going to be a lot of offense in the postseason like that’s what does it you got to go score runs and so it was cool to just we kept adding on that build our confidence up and then we go into the coastal game and it’s a freaking CG likes to call it a heavyweight match and it was it was blow after blow back alley fight as Yeah and like you said that fifth or sixth inning like we’re in a freaking dog fight and then next thing you know it just gets out of hand it was a really That was a really good game until it wasn’t yeah literally it’s the best way to put it and then Yeah you wake up the next day and it’s like dang we got to play Florida again and everybody’s kind of like dragging in there a little bit and then the whole thing goes down we’ve we have beat that horse is so beyond dead because of how much we’ve talked about it we don’t have to talk about it if you want to find out the story go watch one of the hundreds of videos we’ve talked about cuz it’s actually last three weeks it’s ridiculous but yeah that happens and it kind of fired you guys up right yeah it uh we were pretty dead walking in there that happens we’re in the cage and we’re all fired up ready to go um so it it definitely sparked us and then we got out there and it’s like we’re doing the same thing um and everybody’s just picking each other up like I know I left some guys on scoring position and other guys are just picking us up it was it was a really cool offensive performance and um big win and then you got to turn around and and play a a game at at night and you know a pitcher we probably should have done damage off of but the winds playing a different factor that night it’s blowing a little um and did you you hit the jack Saturday or Sunday night it is Saturday saturday night because it was one nothing [ __ ] yeah I hit one Sunday they got caught at the wall which I I mean I think if it’s Saturday night it’s it’s pushing out perfectly yeah for sure for sure for sure um so it was it was it’s like two different days like you needed your more singles and uh get runners on put pressure on them but like you said both both sides of the ball were getting out of jams really well and not there were some situations where it’s like oh they’re runners in scoring position but it was like getting out of it pretty easy it seemed like so and then obviously the one inning um that where they get the run and like you said it’s a tough feeling when all that emotion hits you that that could be it um and I didn’t even know I played my last home game against UTSA when we walked it off like thought we were playing Cample Tuesday so until late I remember what could be my last home game i remember talking to Riley about it because Riley was pretty even killed about it riley’s Riley’s carefree about a lot of stuff so he just he was just like it’s what it is what it is i played 100 games here but like I not being able to take in the moment especially knowing you weren’t going to host that was going to be the last one not being able to take it in like go through your last pregame go through your last BP like go through your last home everything i feel I mean I don’t know maybe it’s just me being nostalgic but I feel like that kind of sucks yeah a little bit yeah because like you start looking at Well I think Eastston knew um East Deli i think he knew because he was like sitting out there so I sat out there with him and I kind of like was like “Dang this really could be you know one of the last home games I ever played in.” Um unless something lined up with like a super or something that could like uh like But yeah it was like it was it was weird because like we have a game on Tuesday but everybody kind of knew it was canceled so yeah I didn’t take it in as my last home game yeah um but definitely sat there a couple times and just thought about it i mean I know we sat there for probably three hours after Evansville we didn’t The game We played at noon the game ended at 3 i don’t think we left till 5:45 i remember Carter was out there you were out there and I was just Yeah kind of hanging out i was in center field no I was actually on center field in the mound carter was in Nico’s seat you were in the dugout and then we all met in the dugout and we were like “Wow.” Yeah we just started talking it was a that was a really cool day special day i think we kind of all know what it was but it was definitely I think the the night the Yes it sucked that we lost but that night like the emotion that poured out of everybody and the fact that we had such a good time and being able to relive all those memories and enjoy ourselves and like know and understand like it’s over but like it’s almost like the corny quote like don’t cry because it’s over smile because it happened kind of thing like it’s it sucks that it’s over and we were all crying and the press conference sucked i’ve had so many people like I I go told me hundred times he’s like that’s the hardest press conference I’ve ever sat through with us and all the seniors and stuff and it’s like yeah it sucks but like we did a lot of cool stuff here so it’s it’s not like it’s it’s the it’s the last thing in the world but um when you guys lost in that I mean it was what they scored in the eighth inning and then that’s that’s the thing that really sucks it was it was tied and it wasn’t and then it feels like 10 minutes later it’s over so like what was the I guess everybody knows about the outfield when you you’re hugging all your teammates and crying and especially for you with the possibility of you not being able to return with the draft or maybe you do come back whatever whatever happens but having the possibility of that being your last game in that jersey what was the kind of the feeling like in the in the outfield on not on your own field which sucks yeah we were actually in the dugout um we never went to the outfield so we’re all hanging out in the dugout but just watching those guys celebrate and just kind of going through what it all happened the past three years and it’s like CG says it all the time like blink of an eye it’s like yeah no dude got here so quick and um how much pride I have to wear that uniform it just kind of all it was it was a sting but it was a I guess a good sting in a way like it was like I kind of gave all I had for for that uniform and it does suck that I might not ever get to wear those words across my chest but um it was some good memories yeah a lot of cool moments a lot of special memories and we mentioned it at the top but the draft is coming up and it’s it’s going to be cool if you obviously get the chance to play at the next level it’s been everybody’s dream your dream since you were little and if it happens great if it doesn’t another year of Dixon Williams and Purple Gold would be pretty cool too but time will tell but that’s right um thanks for coming on dude this was awesome i had a great time thanks for thanks for giving us the time and and hanging out for a little bit yeah no thanks for having me yep there it is dixon Williams great episode of his um really fun to talk to him like I said can’t wait to see what the draft holds for him and in his future whether that is coming back to Greenville being another a pirate for another year or or pursuing his dreams and being able to go play at the
