オリオールズからFAとなっていた藤浪晋太郎投手（29）が、メッツと契約合意した。3日、MLB公式サイトが伝えた。短縁契約で335万ドル（約4億8575万円）、85万ドル（1億2325万円）の出来高が付く。
メッツには千賀滉大投手（31）が所属しており、これで日本選手が複数所属する球団はドジャース（大谷翔平、山本由伸）、パドレス（ダルビッシュ有、松井裕樹）、カブス（鈴木誠也、今永昇太）に続いて4球団目となった。
チームは20年にオーナーがスティーブ・コーエン氏に代わって以降、超大型補強を行ってきたが、昨季は75勝87敗で地区4位に終わりポストシーズン進出を逃した。今オフはドジャースと契約した山本由伸投手の獲得を目指していたが、失敗に終わっていた。
藤浪は22年オフに阪神から海外FA権を行使し、アスレチックスと1年325万ドル（約4億7100万円）で契約。当初は先発として起用されたが、4試合で0勝4敗、防御率14・40と乱調が続き、ブルペンに回った。リリーフ転向後は持ち前の奪三振能力の高さを発揮し、防御率も4点台に突入。その活躍がア・リーグ東地区で首位を走っていたオリオールズの目に留まり、7月19日にトレードで移籍した。
オリオールズでは主にセットアッパーとして起用され、30試合で2勝0敗、2ホールド2セーブ、防御率4・85。チームは地区優勝を果たし、ポストシーズン進出決定時と合わせて2度のシャンパンファイトを経験した。ポストシーズンではロースターから外れた。米1年目の昨季は2チームで計64試合に登板し、7勝8敗、5ホールド2セーブ、防御率7・18。リリーフ（オープナーを除く）では57試合で防御率5・14だった。
