マリナーズがアメリカンリーグ優勝決定シリーズでブルージェイズと対戦!

The Seattle Mariners are going to play for the American League Championship after 15 grueling innings innings in game five. My goodness, the Seattle Mariners took down the Detroit Tigers. I going to talk about what happened in this game because it was uh man, this was something. And then we’re going to talk about the keys to the American League Championship Series. We’re gonna talk about our FanDuel favorites and then we’re going to talk about the American League Championship versus the Toronto Blue Jays. Thank you guys so much for watching episode 238 of the Hit It Here podcast part of the Believe Network and presented by FanDuel. And this is the Doug, Blake, Bryce, Taylor, Gory, Brian, Mark, Gavin, GMO, Carter, and Bryce number two episode of the podcast, as well as everybody else whose names I missed or forgot at the ballpark last night. It was, as you could tell, my voice is a little bit shot. It was a uh incredible night. It was a stressful night. I mean, I think I probably needed to go to a hospital at least four times. Like every emotion that I think could have been felt at the ballpark was felt last night. But Joe, I’m just glad the Mariners are moving on. They got it done. They They are on the the right side of history of what I am labeling as like is this a is this a Mount Rushmore division series of all time? like without a doubt and recency bias, Mariners’s bias aside, even if they had lost, I’d say that this series in general is one of the best division series that I’ve paid attention to and watched in in completion. But yeah, the amount of emotions that were felt at the park last night, I mean, you could just tell the the the way everyone was hanging on every single pitch and how loud it got in there. And obviously you were there as someone who was just listening on the radio for the second half of the game pretty much because well it went 15 innings. I was going to say like I was going to say the end of the game but I listened for about an hour and a half because the game was so freaking long. I mean it’s the longest winner take all game in baseball history. Correct. Or is it just I think that’s what MLB Network was saying. Four hours and 38 minutes or something silly like that. Yeah, just neither team wanted to give it up, but also it seemed like neither team wanted to win. It’s just um a war of attrition at the end of this series. And the Mariners do come out on top against Terrick Scuboo. I mean, he only went six innings, so he pitched less than half the game because you went 15. There’s some, you know, weird like silver lining in that situation, but he was dominant in this one. But you do manage to scratch off a run against him courtesy of Josh Naylor and Mitch Garver. Leo Rivos checks in. Birthday boy with a pinch hit late in this one in the seventh inning. I say late, it’s it’s the first half of the game technically because again extra innings. Nobody wanted to win, but an an absolute classic, an all-time classic. They pulled out all the stops. They broke the humpy glass when they needed to and immediately walked it off the next inning. I mean, good for the guys to just fight through it. This playoff baseball is never going to be easy. And the Tigers, as much of a favorite the Mariners were in this one going into it, yeah, it did not play out that way. And that’s just the way playoff baseball goes is there’s playoff risers in every scenario. And Carrie Carpenter probably had the one of the best playoff performances in an entire series, but let alone just game five. I mean, he had an a series worth of offense in just game five alone. He was on base six times. Like, he was unstoppable. I’m glad we do not have to face him any longer. But what a series, Colton. And you were there for three out of the five games. I mean, what a time. Yeah, it was uh I mean, last night had everything. It was baseball cinema. It truly was baseball cinema. And it sucks. I mean, it doesn’t suck now, but had they lost, it would have sucked to have a rooting interest in that game because just as like a baseball fan, you watch that and you’re like, “Oh my god, like this is insane.” Um, you know, overall, I think that Dan made the right moves last night. Um, going to Gabe Spire, in my opinion, was the right move. Gabe just did not have it again. Yeah. And man, Gabe threw some of the worst pitches I’ve ever seen. And I think I said that when he gave up the home run in uh in Detroit, but to Carrie Carpenter, like I don’t know why it was so hard to just walk him. Wow. Like like just hold up four fingers. Can we can we stop? Can we stop like like pitching to this guy who has hurt us all series? He has been the only reason compitive that this series was competitive. Yeah. Like the Mariners just could not stop Carrie Carpenter. But in the end it didn’t matter. Leo Rivos like you mentioned coming up and hitting a hitting a double or a single, whatever it was down the line to score a run. I mean that was a move by Dan that I thought was very it was a veteran move truthfully. They pinch hit for Mitch Garver with Dom Canzone and as soon as the lefty was announced, they pinch hit for Dom. Just burned him right then and there and put Leo Revos in. And Leo comes through and in the biggest moment of his career and then of all the guys to be the ones to walk this off, I’m incredibly happy it was Polo. It it it it paid off the bet that he made on himself at the beginning of the year where he didn’t have to come back here. He could have gotten more money elsewhere, but he came back here because he had something to prove. And the guys that he was with on the team last year, you know, he wanted to he wanted to be there for them. So, I’m really happy it was Polo in this one. Again, you Humpy Humpy won his first race. I mean, we were sitting up there on the landing and I said, “They got to let him win. something h we have to change the ju guuju. Yeah. And I’m like he’s like in last and I’m like ah all right whatever. Again another humpy loss and then he just breaks through all three other salmon and wins the race. And I was like oh my god that this is it. This you got to win it for Humpy and uh lo and behold the Mariners did. Yeah. I mean just just an incredible game overall. Um incredible series. This is one that I don’t, like you said, is a Mount Rushmore of division series. This is a Mount Rushmore game for the Mariners in my opinion, just throughout the history of this team. Like you think about it, there’s like obviously the slide of 95. Um may maybe win 116, although I don’t think that win was like all that crazy. Um you have Felix’s perfect game, you have Cal’s walk-off, and then this is up there, too. I don’t want to I don’t want to put them in order right now cuz I I probably have some bias right now. Yeah. But man, the just the fact that the Mariners are going to the American League Championship Series for the first time, Joe, in 24 years. 24 years. I mean, they were deleting Tigers batters left and right in this one. We’ll throw Eduard Bazardo’s name in between because he was absolutely nails as well. But Logan Luis, they were amazing. And as far as their expect my expectation for them where we’ll see them in the American League Championship Series, well, it it’s going to be a minute. They’re not going to pitch in either of the first two games. I I would not imagine so. And the the only way that I think we see one of them in the first two games is that the main key for the Mariners in this championship series, Brian Woo, is not available to pitch in game two. It is listed right now that he’ll be on the championship roster. That hasn’t been fully announced yet, but Daniel Kramer, everyone’s out there, you know, trying to figure out all the nooks and crannies for what’s going to happen because it’s a quick turnaround period. The Mariners played 15 innings. They got on a flight to Toronto. They play a game tomorrow night and it is a quick turnar around to figure out all the roster and everything like that. Brian is not available to pitch a game one in any capacity. Bryce Miller is listed as available. Weird wording and it will start that first game on short rest. Emerson Hancock has not pitched once in the division. Like he hasn’t pitched in the postseason. So, I imagine it’ll be a Bryce Miller, Emerson Hancock piggyback where Miller goes three, maybe an efficient four cuz he didn’t throw that many pitches against Detroit in game four. So, the short rest, like, yes, it’ll matter, but he’s probably not so overexerted where the short rest is going to play into that big of a factor. And then Emerson Hancock should probably take two innings in in game one as well. But the key, the cog, if you will, for the rotation going forward is Brian Woo. when will he be able to pitch? And it will benefit the Mariners greatly if he can throw on Monday in game two. If not, then he’ll be starting a game back home in games three, four, or five more than likely. If he’s not able to go game two, I don’t know who they pitch in game two. Like that might be the Well, Colton, we’re looking at game one as if that’s not also a bullpen. like we’re just starting the the the Blue Jays series here with two bullpen days theoretically if Brian was not able to go. But with the way that the pitching had to extend and overexert themselves like using all their resources it feels like the Mariners did in this fivegame series against Detroit. Getting Brian Woo back will be massive. Like there’s not an an adjective I think that can quantify how important Brian Woo will be for the health and the I guess just longevity of the Mars pitching staff for this. Now we thought that game that five game series was a marathon. You just leveled up to a seven game series against Toronto. Yeah, you did. I’m more stressed now. Thank you so much. Yeah, I think that I from what we heard from Kramer last night, Brian Woo isn’t going to pitch it till like midway through the series. So that means to me more so at T-Mobile Park on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday if Friday is necessary, of course, which if that’s the case, so if you go Bryce on Sunday, Monday, the least maybe like how many pitches did he end up throwing last night? like he threw the least out of any of the starters that went like maybe Luis and Bizardo like something like that. I don’t I I don’t know. I I wish I had an answer. I don’t know. Like the mer the fact like it was just get to this point and figure it out. We’re we’re at that point now and we’re trying to figure it out and I dog no no no freaking idea like Luis threw 15 pitches. Okay. So, Luis, but he was, you know, but it was also he threw the latest in that game. Had to get warm the latest. So, like you’ll have the least amount of recovery time, but throwing 15 pitches, I mean, he threw what, two or three to get the one out in in the when he first entered the game. So yeah, it’s probably Luis, but and I think Dan’s done a good job as well as well of having the idea of when the short leash needs to kind of be like, “All right, we got to go get this guy right now.” And for Luis, depending on how he’s pitching, I mean, we saw how well he pitched back in 2022 in Toronto in the wildard series, maybe this is, you know, the the the second calling of that instance. and the 15 pitches that he threw last night getting warm, whatever. It’s not going to play as big of a role as maybe we’re making it out to be. I just It’s his first relief appearance ever. His first since in 2016 where he was with IA with the Reds. Like such a long time removed from having a relief appearance. Of course though, he is a a veteran. He’s a veteran of the game. He’s a guy that probably knows himself best and knows that he could say to Dan, “Hey, I got game two. Give me the rock, you know, let let the Rock go out there, pitch pitch on the mound in Toronto in game two, just given the way that if I was thinking about this as far as like Jake’s bullpen tracker or just pitch tracker in general, Luis is probably the one that makes the most sense as a whole because he pitched in game two as a starter and then the next time we saw him was for 15 pitches in game five. like overall pitches over the last say like week or so that’s probably equivalent to one start like of a regular season situation. It’s just every pitch in the playoffs is amplified by one and a half two times as far as the stress level. So it’ll be interesting what they do knowing. See I didn’t know about the the comments about Woo pitching in this the middle or second half of this series. So that completely changes the perspective for me. To be fair, that was tweeted by Kramer last night. Sure. Um that he was expected midway. So maybe things have changed since then. But yeah, I think that if you go Bryce Luis in games one and two, um I mean short leash for Luis, you know, have him go three, four innings and then send out, you know, Bazardo or just someone multi-ining. You know, if it needs to be Hancock again, so be it. Like we’ll we’ll figure it out. You have the off day to fly back home for Wednesday. Thursday I think Wednesday you go Logan. Yeah. Thursday I think you probably go George and then Friday if necessary you go Brian Woo. Like I think that that is probably the way they’re going to do it because while yes Brian Woo is available to pitch, I think they still want to be cautious with this injury which sucks. I mean, it’s a it’s it’s a it’s a stupid situation. It sucks, but it is just the the way that the Mariners are probably going to go about this is they’ll pitch him if necessary, but they’re going to wait until, you know, game five, whereas if if this series ends in four, I don’t think that we see Brian Woo pitch in my opinion, which ultimately I think is fine. As for the Blue Jays, Joe, we talked about in the green room who who could be a part of that team and Tai France has an opportunity to be a part of that Blue Jays roster in the American League Championship Series. I love Ty France. I do. But man, if he hurts the Mariners in that series, I I don’t Do I have to take back my Tai France uh what is it? What did you call your Donovan Solano card? Oh, yeah. Ty France defense card. Donnie Donnie Barl’s defense card. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, Tai is one that was left off of the the division series roster for the Blue Jays. You’re looking at Bo Bashette returning from injury. There’s Chris Basset and Max Scherzer who are also left off. So again, we don’t fully know the championship rosters right now, but if there were to be like changes made, adding any of those four to the Blue Jays roster, who as far as the postseason is concerned, probably look like the second best team, maybe if not second, the best. It might go Dodgers, Blue Jays, or Blue Jays Dodgers right now. As far as what we’ve seen in the postseason as a whole, of course, round by round things can change. It’s not necessarily a guarantee that they are going to be, you know, as potent of an offense as they were against the Yankees. And it’s never a guarantee that the Dodgers will continue to, you know, have the the most clutch base hit imaginable in in certain situations. But for the Blue Jays, I mean, they won the East for a reason. They are the best team in the American League for a reason. Like, it’s going to be an uphill battle. I want to ask you though uh if there are other changes to the Mariners championship roster like thinking about the pitching health like we know Michael Fulmer who once a starter probably can give you length was down in Tacoma. Do we see him on the roster instead of like a Carlos Vargas or instead of maybe a Caleb Ferguson? I don’t know if the Marisfield contra rolling with only one lefty, but I mean that’s pretty much what they were against the Tigers in this series was they were one left-handed arm out of the vent because Ferguson was utterly useless after his one outing. Thinking about the way that the Blue Jays roster breaks down, I mean, think about the all the tough righties in that lineup. Sure, there’s a couple lefties in there, but I mean, S Pandere’s a switch hitter. like it’s not gonna matter as far as lefty righty for him. Like you have Nathan Lucas, you have Addison Barger, you have I think Dalton Vo is I think he’s just left-handed. He’s not a switch hitter. So there’s a couple lefties in there and I you know forgive me if I’m missing anybody specifically, but do the Mariners need to carry Caleb Ferguson? Do you think that they would go to an arm that maybe they just want to see if they have any, you know, anything in the tank there? Yeah, I mean the damage doers in that lineup, Vlad Guerrero, George Springer, Boba if he’s in there, like they’re all right-handed. And so if you do decide to go Michael Fulmer is an interesting one. Um I don’t know if they’re able to change the taxi squad in between series, but like could you potentially have like Jonathan Diaz in there as like a length lefty guy, you know, our our goat out there every inning in spring training? Um, I could also see them going to Casey Legina. He’s given you multiple innings in the past and that could be a situation. And he’s also been very good or very bad. Like he’s had awesome moments this year. He’s had awful moments this year. Whereas Michael Fulmer hasn’t pitched in the big leagues at all this year. And maybe I don’t even know the last time he did pitch in the big leagues. like on putting I feel like that’s kind of unfair to bring him in and put him on the biggest stage and say all right buddy this like figure it out like you’re throw him to the wolves so I think Lego in my opinion could be the right choice over somebody like Carlos Vargas although Carlos Vargas this year very similar to Legamina has had some really big moments has had some really bad moments Ferguson has had mainly bad moments um yeah so if the Mariners do feel comfort able taking Caleb Ferguson off this roster and going to one of those guys. I think it does make a lot of sense. I don’t I do not expect I mean obviously the bullpen or the pitching staff won’t be the same because Brian Woo is going to be a part of it. So no matter what like there’s going to have to be a move made there in some way, shape or form. Whether that be Ver Vergus Vargas Vargas or Ferguson combined them. I combined them. Ferguson. Um I don’t know. And could it be both of them? It could be like the Mariners could have Brian Woo in there for Carlos Vargas and have, you know, Michael Fulmer in there for for Caleb Ferguson. It’s certainly possible. The fact that they have to make that decision so quickly is asinine. Like it sucks, dude. But that’s playoff baseball. I mean, that’s just the way things go. Um, if the Mariners could have won this series like they should have in Detroit, they would have had a lot more time to figure this out. But that’s just not the way the Mariners do things. Looking at the odds over on FanDuel for our FanDuel favorites in game one. And I think this makes some sense. The Blue Jays are the favorites in this one at minus 158 compared to the Mariners at + 134. We talked about how it’s probably going to be Bryce Miller in game one to start that one. Kevin Gosman is on the other side. Gossman’s a fantastic pitcher. Like that’s going to be a tough one. I think the Mariners struggled with him earlier this year as well. I’m looking at the uh the overunders here for total runs scored and I think I’m taking the over. I I I am taking the over at 7 and a half which I mean to be fair at minus 120 that is the favorite is to be over 7 and a half. So, I don’t know how many runs that’s going to be for the Mariners, but overall, I think that the over on that seven and a half line is probably one that I would take there. And the Mariners themselves, Joe, I mean, for better or for worse, they are one of the four best teams in baseball this year. Yes, sir. They are currently ranked third to win the World Series behind the Dodgers who were at plus 115. mine got. Wow. They are they they they’re almost like minus money. Yeah. To win the World Series at this point. The Blue Jays are at plus 320. The Mariners are at plus 340. Okay. So like that’s that is a situation where either of those guy either of those teams are basically neck andneck for the American League to go to the World Series. And unfortunately as of right now under league winners there is nothing there. But under the ALCS tab, the Mariners are at plus 102 with the Blue Jays at minus 120. I like the that the overall series odds are a bit more balanced compared to how skewed game one is given the advantage that the Blue Jays likely have going into this one where they have Kevin Gosman who had a four-war season. He’s been good for them. Like there’s no hiding who Kevin Gosman is. like he is a great pitcher and going up against him in game one’s a tall task and with how exhausted likely the Mars are going to be. Of course it’s no excuse you have to go out there and play the game. Of course the odds are going to be pretty skewed towards the Blue Jays in that first game. But when you look at the rest of the series you can see it kind of balance out where it’s minus 120 to plus 102. Mar’s almost at minus money there. It’s it’s close to even odds and we saw how these odds can shift as the Tigers and Mariners series played out where Tigers win game one then they become the series favorites. Like it just was a back and forth situation. I’m very very excited to get this one underway. I agree with you on the over at seven and a half because the Blue Jays offenses looked absolutely money. And with Bryce Miller, yes, he’s he looked great in his outing in Detroit. Again, you just have to flush everything going into the next series. And what version of Bryce are we going to get is very important. But that’s what kicks off game one of the American League Championship Series on Sunday at what 5:00. 503 I believe it is. Y 503. So they’re going to be in Toronto 503 for us. Get an evening night game there, which is very, very cool. Not a day game randomly on a Sunday. Gives the Rivers a little bit more time to rest. But again, it’s not a lot where you just played 15 innings, you travel, you get there, you get everything set up, and then you have to go face Kevin Gossman and you have to go face the Blue Jays lineup where Vlatt’s like what, like nine for 17 in the postseason and going absolutely nuclear like this there. There’s a lot of guys up and down the Blue Jays lineup that can get it done. Nathan Lucas is a guy who just a seemed like a maybe like a quad A outfielder type situation and he’s having a great postseason. It’s like the postseason hero story where there’s one guy on every team every single postseason where like what’s he gonna like how is he going to contribute and then he just gets it done every single time. He had a big hit against the Yankees in game four. Obviously George Springer had a phenomenal year. We talked about whether or not we’re going to see the likes of Bo Bashette or Ty France. How big of a role will those guys play in this series? But game one, like you mentioned, Gossman versus Miller. Game two, we assume it’s going to be Luis Castillo for the Mariners. What would you expect it to be for the Blue Jays? Are they going Trey Savage? Are they going Are we Are we looking at the division series pitchers of Bieber and Yavage filling out the rest of that rotation or do they add one where it’s Sherzer can pitch or Chris Basset can pitch? Because I feel like they’re definitely going to switch it to a fourman rotation, right? Given Yavage’s start of his professional career in 2025 was an aball, like expecting him to be able to give you a ton of innings is pretty unrealistic. Like, he’s going to give you probably five at most every single start out, which is fine in a in a playoff situation. You just need to have the arms to be able to back him up. I think they go to a four-man rotation here and likely bring in I think Basset over Sherzer, but that’s just probably given regular season success. If you look at postseason success, maybe you turn to Sherzer instead. See if the old dogs got a little bit g, you know, some gas left in the tank. But what do you expect for game two? Yeah, I I I feel like they either do go to Y Savage or to Beaver in that one just because they’re the guys that are already there. They’re, you know, they’ve been pitching. I think game three it’s probably the other one. So, whoever doesn’t pitch game two and then game four is where you see one of either Basset or Sherzer. Now, keep in mind there is going to be, you know, a day off in there. So, could you realistically go Gossman that day? Sure, you absolutely could. Um, but I I do think that Chris Bassid is probably the guy that gets added and he pitches game four if I if I had to guess. Now, the Blue Jays offense is really I mean, their don’t get me wrong, their pitching staff was fantastic this year, but their offense is really what carries them. If you can find a way to get to these starting pitchers, their bullpen honestly doesn’t really scare me. And yeah, in 2025, Kevin Gosman had one start versus the Mariners in Seattle on the 9th of May. He went five and a third, gave up seven hits, three earned, three strikeouts in that time frame. Um, he did win that game. The Blue Jays won that game. That was, I believe, when the Mariners got swept by the Blue Jays. Yep. So, yeah, I mean, the Mariners struggle versus Gossman in that one. Bryce Miller has one start versus the Blue Jays this year, Joe. Five innings pitched, eight hits, seven earned runs. He gave up one home run, two walks, three strikeouts. that was also in that same series. Uh, excellent. That was the last game of that series. So, yeah, excellent. Like, yeah, it’s uh that’s a tough that that’s a tough go of it for uh Bryce Miller. So, hopefully he’s able to write the ship this time in Toronto. I mean, a lot of the guys that are there, they they’re going to remember what happened last time in Toronto. Like, the Mariners were there in 2022. They came back and had one of the most improbable victories in a wildcard round that I think we’ve ever seen. And you know, hopefully that that gives the guys some life. Now, obviously, you know, you don’t have Carlos Santana. You don’t you don’t have Paul Sewalt. He was he he was crying in the dugout uh after the Tigers lost because he has so many friends still on the Mariners team. Incredible. Bring Bralt home. It’s time for Paul Seal to pitch in Seattle. Like maybe like maybe he could be like a bullpen coach or something. Yeah, part of the pitching strategy. I don’t know if he’s how much gas he’s got left in the tank, but we carried Caleb Ferguson for half a season. He’s got enough gas in the tank. Yeah, I guess that’s fair. I guess that’s fair. I’m looking at the Blue Jays bullpen and of course again things can change but as it as the division series roster they had four lefties out of the pen. Brendan Little, Mason Flu Hardy, Justin Bal, Bruhil, Briel, I don’t know how to pronounce it. And then Eric Lowour. I think Lowour had a great regular season but he was starting for them or I guess like better compared to what his expectations were. don’t think he pitched particularly well in the division series against the Yankees. If they add someone into the rotation, I would expect one of those lefties to maybe get kicked out of the pen because you don’t need that many lefties. I feel like given the Mariners lineup specifically like yes, they have a good balance of lefty switch righty like they’re up and down the lineup, but I don’t think you need there’s not that big lefty bat. Like yes, Josh Naylor is there, but I don’t think that it’s you don’t need to go to a lefty specialist if I’m the Blue Jays in that situation. You probably do, but you don’t need three. You don’t need four of them out of the pen. So, I would expect one of those lefties listed to be substituted out for a starting pitcher, whether it be Basset or I almost said Yavage or Scherzer in that situation. They could move Yavage to the pen for all I know. And maybe they go add both Sherzer and Basset and throw Yavage into the pen or something. I don’t know. There’s a lot of moving parts here. But yeah, the Blue Jays bullpen, not particularly like I would compare it, and I’d say this, I wasn’t necessarily scared of the Tigers bullpen. I would compare this pen to the Tigers pen where there are some definite electric arms that can go out there and get you really big innings. And there’s a couple guys that can go multiple innings. I mean, Yariel Rodriguez when he came over from Cuba was it was like a hybrid starter reliever situation. He’s been very effective for the Blue Jays specifically out of the pen and in long relief. I know that obviously Eric Lowour guy that’s given that was a starter can give them multiple innings. Whether or not he’s on the championship roster is yet to be seen. But when you’re looking at a one-two punch of Jeff Hoffman and Sir Anthony Dominguez, like yes, it’s it’s good. It’s good enough to win you the East and get you into the championship series, but the bullpen is not what won them a ton of games. I think the bullpen and the pitching staff in general is what won the Mariners the division series. Yeah. The amount of scoreless lights out innings that the Mariners pitching staff threw against the Tigers. They’re going to need that same exact result. Maybe not same exact, but they’re going to need to replicate a similar level of success if they want to have a chance to go to the first World Series in franchise history. Four wins away from history. Just g that just gave me goosebumps, man. I’m feeling goosebumps all over again. Listen, T-Mobile Park was rocking last night, and I know for a fact it’s going to be even more rocking during the American League Championship Series. It’s just a fun time to be a Mariners fan right now and I hope you guys are enjoying it as much as we are. Though hopefully with a lot less um anxiety and indigestion than than we are. But nonetheless, we appreciate you guys for watching episode 238 of the Hit It Here podcast presented by FanDuel. And go Mariners.
