schedule as we get closer to September and our weekly schedule but we will be there live with our football Friday shows we will be there with a couple other shows during the week and don’t be surprised if we’re there post game for some football games on Sunday live up on the network and on the Mike FRS has Channel live uh on YouTube after uh games on Sunday so uh that is in our plans also we still have some work to do on uh getting everything figured out but we will be doing a lot of it so get ready for that in a big way but right now it’s still baseball with some football sprinkled in uh after SOS three home run performance last night the Yankees actually beat the white sock I have to admit I was wondering if the White Soxs just had one guy that they could reach down that now you know they don’t have a good player on the bench because if they had a good player on the bench you’d be playing but you just wondered if they could reach down that bench when they got The Bases Loaded in the ninth inning and the Yankees are thinking oh man what if somebody takes one deep here we lose again and lose backto back games to this team which hasn’t won in a month and a half and here it is 41 which is too close for comfort especially with their Bullpen and they just didn’t have anything except pop guns on that bench and they get a little pop up that doesn’t get deep enough for a sack fly and then a feeble strikeout out to end the game and uh you knew bwin was just overmatched I mean he just you know he’s up there flailing uh he he’s looked over match than almost all a bat so far but hey it’s the white socks you know they’ve already lost 90 Plus game so you know how bad they are even though they you know put forth that big effort uh on Monday night to embarrass the Yankees Yankees have bullk game today which is what any game that Warren thoughts will be uh and they’ll try to get out of there which I’m you know most likely they will it would be pretty embarrassing to lose two out of three to this team get out of there with a wind had a day off and go to Detroit um as sort of put some muscle out there three home run game um and close the gap a little bit let’s be honest these guys are going to finish one two in the MVP boting it’s happened before hey man Maris you know go look at 60 Maris Ed man for the MVP by one vote that would have been Mickey’s fourth if it would have been his third then he won it in 62 would have been his fourth and 61 they were again the two big players Maris hitting 61 homers Man hitting 54 and hitting 37 uh and providing protection for Maris uh these two guys are going to hit probably 90 some odd or maybe even a 100 home runs between them Maris M hadit 115 between them so uh they’re going to hit somewhere probably in the mid90s when they finish it they’re going to finish one two in the MVP voting judge is going to win it as he should but the Yankees they’re going to still go into the postseason with some worries because these problems are not going to be solved whether they Edge the Orioles and they have a better schedule they have now edged in front of them Orioles haven’t played well in a while they’ve played better against the Yankees head tohe head this season but they don’t meet until the 24th 25th 26th September Orioles have a lot tougher schedule than the Yankees they see better teams including the Mets next week and the Mets will be a desperate team on their way to a tough West Coast Swing against the Padres and the Diamondback so those games at City Field next week after the Mets play to all this weekend are going to be very big against the Orioles and the Orioles see the Astros they see the Red Sox a couple of times they see the Twinkies to finish the season and the twins are playing well and they have something to play for hey getting into those first two slots as a division winner is huge if you’re thinking about going to the to the World Series having to play from the get-go being thrust into the other spots is very dangerous for any team and that’s why it’s really big if you can get one of those two spots and get a buy it just it means a lot more than it had in the past and it means a great deal and that’s what they’ll be fighting for over these last 40 plus games for the season now while the Yankees are going about their business on the road white socks then to the Tigers for the weekend the Mets come home and I guess everybody figures hey they’re playing the A’s and the A’s last year were one of the worst teams we’d seen until we’ve seen this year’s white socks they were just non-competitive they are a lot better this year and they’ve got some good young players in that lineup just like the Angels do the A’s do too I mean it’s amazing how many good young players there are they got some guys that can play in that lineup they got some guys that can hit in that line when you got to catch it’s got 22 home runs and he hits himself a big home run last night and has a couple of hits but the Mets right now are on fumes they’re two games behind the Braves they have now fallen six games behind San Diego and Arizona that’s a lot the Braves are 63 and 56 the Mets are 61 and 58 the Giants and the Cardinals are 500 Giants are 61 61 Cardinals are 60 and 60 so the Mets have a two- game Edge on those teams and three in the loss two in against the two against against the Cardinals who have games to make up and they’re two games behind the Braves but right now they’re on fumes sevino is hit a wall his last three starts the bullpen has sprung leaks All Season you just try to patch it patch it here patch it there give me a new guy here give me a new guy there this guy’s hot right now this guy’s cold right now mix and match that’s all it is but that lineup top to bottom which was so energetic and so live from Lindor and Nimo at the top raking like crazy to guys at the bottom like a glacius and Vader doing their job now guys have cooled off they’ve all cooled off but some of them have really gone ice cold nmo is in a since the break he’s done nothing one for his last 18 three for his last 26 10 for his last 55 with no homers and three RBI in his last 117 of bats he struck out 39 times he has just gone into a Major Funk now after that big hot streak and all his home runs did they figure out a way to pitch the themo maybe maybe he has to make that adjustment I think that’s what’s going on with Alvarez now they stopped feeding Alvarez a steady diet of fast palls which he kills and now they’re hurting them with the sles and the curves and the sliders and sweepers and anything that has a move on it that it’s bothering Alvarez and maybe he’s not 100% but he has cooled off dramatically also 34 strikeouts in his last 100 bats 170 in his last 15 games there’s too much of that that lineup right now Martinez is cooled off nmo Alvarez Martinez etc etc other than McNeil nobody’s really hot McNeil’s been really good since the All-Star break been a different player he’s going Ops over over a thousand or over one whatever we want anyway want to count it the bottom line is this team has hit a wall here and they need somebody to lead him out of this now who’s going to be the guy Martinez took a shot on the elbow last night which I don’t know if it’ll be in the lineup today or not cuz that guy boil was throwing 100 miles an hour and he whacked him on the elbow and that had a hurt so maybe he’s on lineup maybe he’s not you want want to see Neo get going you want to see Alvarez get going Lindor was so hot was so good for so long you knew he had a cool off that’s okay he’ll get back he hasn’t cooled off dramatically but he’s just not dominating like he was they need a pickme up whether it’s with the starting pitcher whether it’s somebody in the lineup getting redot they need somebody to jump up right now and give them a lift they have hit that that place where they just can’t get things right right now and any game is tough I don’t care if it’s the A’s I don’t care if it’s the marins then in come the Orioles and then seven games which could decide this whole thing out west against San Diego and Arizona who have been redot so maybe you weren’t a believer in this thing from the season for the Mets okay I have to admit I wasn’t I thought the Mets would win high 70s I thought they’d fall short I thought they’d probably be sellers at the deadline because I think they have stuck to their plan what you’ve seen from Stern so far are a couple of things one he plays his cards really close to the vest you don’t hear a lot of leaks you don’t see them a lot he’s not playing games with the media he’s not a guy who likes to get on camera or likes to see or hear himself talk he’s a guy who wants to go about his business and you can tell that he’s a little bit of a lone wolf you can kind of get that impression here where he is just going to do things he’s going to be in charge and he’s going to make the decisions and nobody other than the owner is going to know exactly what’s going on that’s not bad that he does it that way as long as he has a plan he he believes in it he executes it he executes it smartly and it gets results this year turned out better than they had hoped they’ve drawn sporadically they’ve had their moments overall their attendance hasn’t been great but they had this surge that got them back in this and you can’t be in front the wild card and cashing your chips that can’t happen not in this town and the owner knew it so they stayed Pat they didn’t add a whole lot of they didn’t add anything that cost them anything they added volume they added bodies they hoped to turn some things around but they didn’t add anything that was going to cost them anything they also didn’t unload anything including Alonzo who I think most likely is is now out of here because I don’t see them agreeing I think Bor ‘s opinion of Alonzo is going to be very different than the Met’s opinion of Alonzo so I I really I really think it’s unlikely he’s back and they have an overall plan that probably doesn’t even include a lot of these guys because the Mets not young in a lot of spots there are a lot of guys who when this team gets good whenever that is won’t be here they didn’t want to go cash any big chip to play this game into September because I don’t think internally they believe totally in this group I think they feel hey we’re going to ride this wave as far as we can ride it but we are not affecting any future endeavors on this ride this ride’s going to go by its own inertia as long as it goes if it takes us to the postseason great if it doesn’t and we miss by a game and we give our fans a September thrill great if we fall apart around Labor Day and we you know play a lot of meaningless September Games we’ll live with it and that’s what you’re wondering right now now and you will look at those 10 games the three against the Orioles and then the seven against San Diego and Arizona that 10 game block will tell you a lot about what the rest of this season’s going to look like because right now they’re crawling they have four games to play before they hit that 10 game block and they can’t get out of their own way we’ll see if they get it turned around today tomorrow day game against the A’s before they play the marins on the weekend these are winnable games these are games they everyone will tell you they have to win if they’re going to do anything it makes plenty of sense because there’s better teams coming this they surprised they scored a lot of runs they were the best offensive team in baseball for about 60 games now they have cooled off dramatically again for a variety reasons and we’ll see where that takes him we don’t know now there are only two games behind the Braves yes Arizona and San Diego are putting some distance and there’s still a couple teams nipping at their heels but this met team is probably going to be able to hang in this worst case scenario at least until like the middle of the month of September that would be the worst case scenario the best case scenario is they hang in all the way and at least have A Punch’s chance but they have got to they have got to find some energy and they have got to find somebody who’s going to step up and lead them right now just by performance get up there and just lead them by performance because right now they’re hurting and that team that looked so good when they were smacking the Yankees around they don’t resemble that team right now now little football the things you care about most in August are three things one am I getting anything out of my hot shot guy I brought in either my free agent or the guy I drafted really high is he going to be what I hoped he would be a Sudden Impact player number two am I getting everybody I need in the fold that means contract haggles stuff like that and number three can I stay away from the disaster that injuries bring now we saw McCarthy get hurt from Minnesota now that means that Sam Donald who was going to be their number one probably anyway unless mcoy did something outrageous was going to be their number one to start the season now he’s their guy there’s no question and they’ve thrown their lot with him and said hey we’re we’re behind Sam 100% we don’t know yet if McCarthy’s going to miss a month or Miss the season we don’t know the extent of the injury we’ll find that out in the days to come but we do know he has an injury but that’s Minnesota I want to touch on the Jets for a second I’m very interested in the Jets and I have been because I want to see this team on the field with the quarterback healthy with the offensive line that I screamed and begged for which they gave me they gave me on a scale of one to 10 they gave me nine they gave me the left tackle I screamed about I wanted a couple of different pieces as the insurance policies but I also wanted the kid out of Penn State and they G and that and that came to so I got to be happy with what the offensive line gave me but what the Jets don’t need is distractions why put this thing together the way you have which is really for a run right now this is a now team you have an old legendary quarterback coming off a season injury you have a defense that is put together to compete and you have skill now that you have an offensive line you have skill you have a incredibly explosive running back who I think is on the verge of Superstar them you have a wide receiver who’s going to be a top 10 receiver I don’t want to say top five because that is rarified air in this league but top 10 is damn good you want to see them put this together are you concerned about the coach staff yes are you concerned that they’ll make the wrong management decision you always are and again yesterday why why make statements about reic that he’s a luxury you don’t need him hell you don’t need him why’ you bring him here if you don’t need him you need him you need any player of that kind of ilk you don’t want to dismiss that player not with what he can bring to to this team he could be the difference between winning or losing that first game he can make a play One play that turns that kind of game around you don’t want him on the sideline and then afterwards say oh now we’ll Pony up and and pay him because we lost the first two and we haven’t been what we thought we were going to be nonsense you don’t need that kind of distraction meet him where he wants to be met you don’t have to give him everything but you also don’t want to dismiss him publicly why would you want to play that game there’s no reason to bring a guy in and then play that game with him you brought this guy in here why would you play it this way again it doesn’t make any sense don’t create distractions don’t throw obstacles they’ll don’t worry the league fate everything will throw enough obstacles into you in front of you don’t worry they’ll be coming you don’t need to create your own the idea is not to create create your own and they’re in the midst of creating one with Ric they don’t need to do get this settled get that team on on really at full bore ready to go right from the start that’s a big opening game you can see what reck’s plan is the only the only recourse reic has yeah he can yell for a trade but they not going to trade him he knows that what he has to do is he has to sit out and hope that they don’t sniff the quarterback on opening night and then they come running why do you want that to be the reason that everything changes be proactive here settle your disputes get any distraction out of the way don’t create them you are going into this season and you know what’s at stake it’s now or never this team is in built for three years from now Rogers is going to be off you know you know following you know you know who knows where he’s going to be you don’t know what planet he’ll be on but right now he’s here trying to lead a football team but why do you want to always as Management on this team leave everything up to where Rogers has to make the statement oh I’m going to talk to reic why should he have to do it do your jobs you brought the guy here don’t create distractions you know some teams just never get it some management people just never get it there’s a way to go about these things and to basically minimize as importance as not the way to play this if he if he was of minimal appoints why did you bring him in here you know that’s nonsense so don’t play it that way to save a couple of bucks man you know you want your team to be all p pulling in the same direction it’s hard enough to win when that’s all there you want to do anything you can not to get involved in that stuff because it can backfire and it can cost you and the game or two that it cost you in September can wind up costing you a lot come the end of the season settle this get him in the fold now go into that game everybody pulling in the same direction let’s see how good this can be and hey I think it can be really good I don’t want I know it’s the Jets I know we’ll hear same old Jets and everything else but hey just look at the talent and you know I don’t have high regard for the coaching staff I mean let’s be honest made that pretty clear they have a lot to show you a lot to prove but talent wise they have thrown personnel and and money at the weaknesses they had they now have an offensive line they can work with yes it’s imperative to keep a guy who can be a Hall of Fame left tackle healthy and he is not young and he can be injury-prone be the first to admit it but when he’s on his game last year when he played and last year he played a lot of snaps and when he was playing he was the best pass Blocker in the league and that’s what this quarterback needs is to have an an anchor at left tackle who’s the best pass brocker in this league and that’s what they have and they went and got bodies that can play that bring toughness and versatility and talent to the position and they have a guy at running back who tip of the ice ber do you know how good he could be the best running back in the sport this year that’s how good he is and I think what he’s going to do in terms of forget running the ball what he’s going to do catching the ball is going to really be eye openening and what they have in this offense with the Personnel they have if this quarterback who is as accurate as any you’ve ever seen I don’t know how much you’ve actually watched him day in day out when you watch him game in game out after four or five games you’re going to be saying I can’t believe the passes this guy throws you will be amazed at what you will see that’s how accurate he is that’s how good he is is he the same as he was no he’s not as good as he was 10 years ago who would be as good at you know 40 as they were at 30 nobody he’s just smarter maybe a little goofier too I mean I don’t know you know he’s out there but he’s got an immense amount of talent from the quarterbacks they played with to the quarterback they will now put behind Center the difference there is so vast it’s almost hard to describe that’s how big the upgrade is don’t detract from that with these silly Petty arguments this is a team that has a chance to do something special Embrace that now the baseball boost before we get to the emails pretty good golf uh but uh so I was distracted for a second from that let’s get to the emails right now here we go all right let’s see what you have Patrick starts us off with respect to stto re signing what if they agree on anani like contract allowing the Yankees to pay it out over years and abling him to shed some of the bloat from the payroll to minimize luxury tax well the Dodgers paid him very little this year compared to what they owe and they have really backloaded the contract enormously could the Yankees do that yes are the Yankees in the business of doing that I don’t know that the problem for the Yankees is they are very bottom line oriented the Dodgers are not and under how the Yankees have become extremely bottom line oriented I think they look at what they are going to pay what they are going to be taxed they are very cognizant of that plus the other issue here and it’s a big one what if you give him some outrageous contract of f now you got to figure he went into the year thinking 500 million minimum he’s had a monster year he’s thinking I guarantee you Boris is thinking more like Otani which is 700 than he’s thinking 500 if you pay him somewhere in the 550 to 600 million range what happens to the judge contract you can’t leave it where it is there’s no way you can have a lineup and have a team where Soto is making a couple hundred million dollar more than judge judge isn’t going to sit for that nor would you ask him to sit for that it would be disrespectful so how do they deal with that it’s going to be very very difficult but here’s the thing just enjoy the ride try to win the best thing you could do if you could ever consider having a guy say I want to stay here in the worst way would be to have him have a special fall win a championship him be a major reason why they win a championship maybe even be a postseason MVP of some kind and that could play into this whole thing let that unfold for before you worry about where this goes contract wise because when you look at it realistically it does not look good because of the Yankees and their new fiscal approach and because of the presence of Judge Bill what is your reaction to WCBS 80 ending its all news format all right I’m sure there’s uh I’ve had a couple of requests for uh questions on this and I have not answered any of them um and I I don’t know if I’m going to answer this one the way you want because first of all was it surprising the answer is yes does it sit well it’s not going to sit well with anybody who grew up like I grew up with 88 being our sister station and being a legendary iconic station as F grew to be they were an iconic station before we were they’ve been in business a very very long time they’ve done brilliant work there on radio for many years it is a format that was known far and wide it was an incredibly successful format know many of those people there who are very good at what they do in all different jobs and so the relationship that I had as being a big part of WFAN which grew into an iconic station and had this sister station that we were very close to in working proximity and had a very close relationship with so it’s kind of like family for me I have not talked to anybody on either side of the LMA I have not talked to anybody from Odyssey I have not talked to anybody from Good Karma I have not talked to Craig commerson I have not talked to uh anybody involved in the deal so I’m not going to talk anything about the business end of this because I don’t have all the facts number one number two am I surprised that they would give ESPN and and LMA yeah yes of course I’m surprised anybody would be am I surprised that that and sad that that format’s going away yes and do I feel for the people who have worked there and done a great job there yeah of course you do you don’t want to see anybody lose their job so from that standpoint it’s tough to take but again I can’t get into the business end of it because I haven’t talk to anybody about it surprised like everybody else very surprised and very saddened because like I said we had a very close relationship with 88 they our sister station we shared a lot of radio history together we have both filled up a lot of trophy cases with Awards we both have become iconic stations together so it’s like a family thing there and I feel very much for the people there I really do and all I can say is that uh CBS news radio 88 will be missed they were an iconic legendary station for generations and they will be sadly missed Paul how is Tom cofin not in the Hall of Fame uh it seems like a huge oversight I think Tom Coughlin will make the Hall of Fame it happens sometimes it doesn’t happen with coaches at maybe the speed that some coaches would want but do I think Tom will get in absolutely he built Jacksonville he took them to two AFC Title Games he had some big big Seasons there 14-2 12- four so and he twice upset the Patriots and Bill bich and Tom Brady in the Super Bowl one is one of the biggest and most important wins in the history of the sport one of the most important games ever played in the NFL is the giant Super Bowl upset of the then unbeaten Patriot team I was there it is one of the memorable games of my life and it will without question catapult both Tom Coughlin and Eli Manning into the Hall of Fame Daniel why didn’t the Met throw everything at getting Blake Snell it’s going to cost them a wild card spot I don’t know what Snell would have wanted going forward I don’t know that the Giants were eager to deal him at the break he was starting to pitch very well he came off the break and pitched the no hitter he is an extremely talented pitcher uh he’s a pitcher that could make the difference he’s a pitcher who could pitch the giants into the wild card this year so I don’t know that he was readily available I don’t know how available he was and I don’t know what the cost was so it’s hard to say but nobody else got Snell either he stayed so when a guy days you have to look at it as to maybe they didn’t really want to get rid of them Chris is there any chance the Giants have a bad season that bill belich ends up coaching them next year I wouldn’t say there’s no chance I think that belich has a very good Rel first of all you’d have to talk to belich about this and belich and I have never been close um I know he has great respect for the giant organization I think he has a very good relationship with John Mara but if you put a gun to my head and said Bill belich back in the league next year where is he coaching I think he’s coaching the Dallas Cowboys Ray what are your thoughts on reic I just think I made that very clear what my thoughts on reic were uh Ray said what are your thoughts on reic and a situation with J to me it seems to further demonstrate organizational incompetence Ray I think I answered that one for you in uh full volume um Dennis I hate the new kickoff rule I think it’s a gimmick do you think the new rule will last past this season I hate the rule I hate anytime they start to change rules now it is always for the worst um I can’t stand it but they are well on their way to legislating the kickoff out of the game you’d have to be blind not to see that they want the kick off out of the game now it also takes the onside kick out of the game they’ve pretty much ruled when they changed the rules to how you could attack an onside kick they completely took the power of the onside kick away it became almost impossible to get an onside kick and the numbers show that so they’ve almost ruined the onside kick anyway and the onside kick has a big place in this sport I can think of great playoff games where teams were covered onside kicks I mean I hate when they do these things I understand they looking at numbers and the injuries that happen on kickoffs the concussions that happen on kickoffs but I don’t like the way they’re going here I think this thing we we’re looking at this year is a complete joke I would rather they just did away with the kickoff rather than insult us with what we’re looking at now and I do think they’re going towards eliminating the kickoff I really do and let’s be honest it will in for all intents and purposes eliminate the onside kick but they’ve gone a long way towards eliminating the onside kick anyway as you know just by the way they legislated on how you have to attack it it took away all the ability to really recover onside kicks we’ll see you later [Applause] [Music] oh [Music]
