Lotte pitcher Manabu Mima held a retirement press conference at his home stadium, Zozo, on the 18th.
He appeared at the press conference dressed in a suit and looked cheerful. He said he decided to retire between the end of August and early September. Despite rehabilitation, his condition was not improving, and when the team asked him to play a retirement game, he was able to sort out his feelings.
Looking back on his 15 years in baseball, he said with a smile, “It went by so quickly. There were a lot of hard times, but I also had a lot of really happy experiences, like becoming number one in Japan, becoming a free agent and joining a second team.” He also cited the 2013 Japan Series against The Giants, where he won two games and was named MVP while playing for Rakuten, as the highlight of his baseball career. “My best memory is becoming number one in Japan,” he said.
After the press conference, Mima received a bouquet of flowers from Sawamura, a junior at Chuo University, and will play in his retirement game against his former team, Rakuten, on the 30th (ZOZO).
◆美馬 学（みま・まなぶ）１９８６年９月１９日、茨城県生まれ。３８歳。藤代から中大、東京ガスを経て２０１０年ドラフト２位で楽天入り。１３年の巨人との日本シリーズでは２勝を挙げて日本一に貢献し、ＭＶＰを獲得。１９年オフ、ＦＡでロッテに移籍した。通算成績は２６６登板で８０勝８８敗、防御率３・９４。１６９センチ、７５キロ。右投左打。
