The Kanji for “baseball” in Japanese is 野球 (yakyū). This term was already in use during the 1920s in Japan.
野球 (yakyū) is a compound of two characters: 野 (ya), meaning “field,” and 球 (kyū), meaning “ball”.
Baseball was introduced to Japan during the early Meiji Era (1867-1873). The term “yakyū” was introduced early in the Meiji period to represent the sport.
The 1920s in Japan corresponded with a part of the Taishō Era (1912–1926) and the beginning of the Shōwa Era. During this time, baseball was gaining popularity in Japan, particularly at the amateur level, including collegiate and high school baseball. The first professional team was even founded in 1920, though it later folded.
Japanese baseball culture in the 1920s involved the spread of the sport among amateur athletic clubs and universities.
The influence of figures like Tobita Suishu, famous for his rigorous “shi no renshuu” (death practice) at Waseda University, helped shape the ethos of Japanese baseball, emphasizing attributes like dedication and perseverance.
