MLBでデオン・サンダースとチームメイトだった頃の本当の姿

What’s that like though? So, you’re changing the foundation and the culture within the organization. How is that paying dividends off the field? I mean, you’re someone who’s on the cover of Ebony magazine, People magazine, like you’re living the good life, good baseball, and and and elig eligible bachelor in in a town that was popping. Yeah. So, he said, “Yeah.” So there there wasn’t a better team to come up with than the Atlanta Braves in Atlanta, Georgia. Cuz you talking about that’s when Germaine Depri was young coming up. Yes. You know, Hotel Holyfield. I don’t know. Rick Ross’ crib now, man. We used to ride Holyfield House look like a hotel, bro. We We ride past because they had an affluent black neighborhood down that way where, you know, the fellas lived. And you know, you talking about Dallas, Austin, TLC, then you got the Falcons with prime time who was with us, Andre Rising. like the city was popping know 112 and and I mean like I’m running into into Too Short and Ice Cube and I mean like everybody just everybody was kind of falling through Atlanta and then because we and no 1991 we did I don’t think we it might have been probably around July August when it was almost like the country started taking notice of this young team and we had a lot of brothers on that team So it was it was literally just non-stop comedy on a daily basis because we we called it cap they call cap now lying back when I grew up capping means joking with each other. So we was always capping on each other man. Me Dion uh Otis Nixon uh Marvin Freeman was literally could have been Dave Chappelle. Oh he was he was Dave Chappelle in 1990 911. He was my heightened man in 1990. He would come in. It was me and Delino de Shields fighting for rookie year and he would always come in, hey Dave, man. Hey boy, Delo had four hits today, man. You better come on, right? He was my height man, man. And then I’m out there trying to me and Delo the Shields. But we just had a real fun team. And then all of a sudden, we just captured America. Matt, I’m telling you, we went from 3,000 fans to 50,000. 40. I mean, and then when they started them tomahawks, man, bro, I’m telling you right now, gives you chills, man. I remember watching them games on TVS. Oh, I’m telling you. And them people was committed to this, too. I mean, they was committed, boy. And then we we end up beating winning our division on the last day of the season. We had the Houston Astros in that last threeame series. And the Dodgers and the Giants always play the last weekend series. And so it was us and the Dodgers. And they hate each other. Mhm. San Francisco still. So San Francisco, if they ain’t going to make it, they going to do everything they can to keep the Dodgers from making it. And they beat the Dodgers. We beat Houston. And man, it was on our way to the playoffs. And it it was crazy in this city, man. It was crazy. Um, I’m telling you that that first year just just how genuine the love for our team was and a bunch of these young guys, I think it’s it was unmatched. I can’t think of another year where I felt that kind of love. Even the year we won it in ’95, nothing matched that in 1991. Shoot, we lost the World Series and had a parade like like you won. Like we won. I’m telling you, it was crazy. It was crazy. Who were what year did Dion come to the to the So Prime was with us, man. I know he was with us in ‘ 91. Yeah, I mean he he was with Prime was with us all the way till 94. I think 94 he got traded to Cincinnati. So I’m not sure Prime was with us in 90 my rookie year. He could have been, but I definitely 91 he was with us on. Yeah. What was it like playing with him? Obviously him playing two sports. Were so were you guys teammates when he tried to play a football game in the day and then come back and play and and he and he hit well actually too. Talk to us about that and what kind of he was going through and and was you know did you guys have any conversations during that time? the the Atlanta Journal Constitution and and I Rosenberg, he had it I honestly he would later apologize to me uh when the Braves inducted me into the their Hall of Fame, but we would have our presence would have been even bigger if we had a supportive beat writer writing about our team and none of the guys liked him because if he could find anything negative, it was always there. Dion is is great. Great teammate. Just a hard worker. Wanted to be a great baseball player. Um, and we were very supportive of Dion. He was our boy. My man playing football and baseball. Like, who does that, right? Other than Bo at that time, Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo Bo Jackson was doing it. But so when Dion had to go play football, was nobody tripping. Yeah, we was like, “All right, cuz we got Otis Nixon sitting over here in center field at arguably the best center fielder in the game.” So when Dion couldn’t make it, we got we not losing nothing, right? And then when then all of a sudden Dion would show up, right? All of a sudden he would appear, right? And they were like, “Oh, Prime, you back, oh, he back.” And then he would come in, you know, and and rejoin the team. And I mean, Dion was just one of the fellas, man. There was there was no extra hype because within our clubhouse, we always kept that outside noise out there. And we were young dudes. It wasn’t like we were in there reading the paper all every day and then walking around the clubhouse like, “Man, look what they said about you. Look what they said.” No. Well, nobody was doing that. We play 162 games, bro. Don’t stay out the paper. You have some teammates that stay in the paper. They stressing every day or mad about what was said. I’m like, “Man, get your head out the paper, bro. Just focus on playing.” back in the day. You think about it, you know, you got papers. What sells? Negativity. How can we find negativity? And then, so you remember that whole Tim Macar situation, you see where, you know, he was accusing Dion of being selfish and all this kind of stuff. Not one of us, not one player, not one coach ever thought that what Dion was doing was selfish. None of us. He had full support of us. So when it came time for Dion to, you know, to give my man a c celebratory no bath, you know, he was just trying to give him a bath. I mean, c he was, he wanted him to be part of the celebration. You know what I mean? And and I would have been accessory to the crime. Me and Dion and Dion would have been in jail together if it was a crime. And I was just trying to help my boy out. I was just putting water in there with him. I didn’t know he was going to do that. But you but but you know what’s crazy is is obviously we live in a social media era now where you guys could have easily took to your phone and cleared your name but this is an era where what was written in the paper or was said was the gospel. So a lot of people outside of that clubhouse not knowing the support you guys have for possibly thinking damn he is maybe he is being selfish. Maybe he’s not pouring into this team like he should be. Hey Matt, think about it man. I cuz I I I used to think about that too. when you’re young and you growing up and you listen to the radio or you watch um the so-called experts on TV um you or you read it, you tend to believe that they tell you the truth. Like I never once before I became a professional athlete did I think that they’d be lying. Why would they lie? Yeah. Why? Who who who lies out here? I I know I’m coming from Cincinnati, Ohio, maybe a little bit sheltered from that standpoint, but that’s literally and I I believe that most fans if they hear it on the radio, read it in the paper, see it on TV, if they said it, it must be true. It’s not until you become a professional athlete or bec before I be until I became a professional athlete that I realize, oh, they’re out here just slanting stuff. And they slant it for those that they want to slant it negatively or positively. You know what I mean? They hide. Like I say, some guys get the pass. They hide. They know. They know your dirt, but no, we not going to do that to him because for whatever reason it may be, we not going to tell his dirt. But we’ll tell his though. But we can’t wait to tell his dirt. Okay. And and they looking to tell your dirt. And and and that still goes on today. Yeah. You see, there’s no question. Still goes on today.
