Edwin Diaz Strikes Out the Side in 9th to Close the Game vs Angels!
[Music] Ninth inning, 7 to five New York. Edwin Diaz, who suffered his second blown save of the season yesterday, comes in to try to get the save today or conventionally. Yeah. Came in in the middle of an inning, starting this inning, of course, and control issues were a problem for Diaz yesterday, especially with the slider. Well, Showell will lead off Mike Trout and Taylor Ward to follow in the ninth. And the first fast ball away to Shaunell. Mets make changes. Mauricio who pinch hit stays in at third. Batty moves to second. Tyrone Taylor comes into play center. And Diaz missing badly with his first two fast balls. 2 and0. This is what he had yesterday. Armside misses. What he had earlier in the year. But don’t be surprised. Throws a 200 slider. Gets the fast ball on the outside edge. two and one. There’s a time when Diaz used to face the Angels regularly earlier in his career with Seattle. Swinging a foul tip, two and two. Trout in fact had 10 at bats in his career against Diaz. Three for 10. Certainly won against Shaell and not allowed Trout to come up as the tying run. Shaowell’s gone 0 for three in a walk tonight. Two-2 fountain and held by Alvarez. Strike three, one down. Well, that was nice to see. He made the adjustment after missing on those first two fast balls. The rest were true. Just aired it out. [Applause] So now Mike Trout who’s been on base twice with a walk and a hit by pitch 0 for two and he takes a fast ball inside for ball one. Mike Trout up and he can’t beat you. 395 home runs in his career. Swing in the middle of the fast ball and it’s one and one. does not have his top velocity tonight, but he’s come out throwing all fast balls and Trout swings through that one at 98. There was the quality crisp fast ball fast. Well, they’ve always said if you’re going to get Trout out, you got to get him off. One, two from Diaz to Trout. Strike him out. 99 from Diaz. Backto back strikeouts to men down [Applause] above the belt. Same type of swing as Pete Alonzo. But tonight Ward has driven in three of the five Angels runs tonight. swings and misses in a slot and nothing in all those fast balls. He started off Ward with the wrinkle. 01 takes the slider down. The ball to strike. Brooks rally is in line for the win. That’s bullpen has been great tonight. on the inside corner with a slider and the Angels are down to their final strike. [Applause] One and two to Ward over his head and over the back stop. Overthrew that one a little bit. Edwin said my bad. Uh we all knew that. Well, that single lasted just three innings tonight. That bullpen has thrown five and two/3 just one run and the slider in there and the ball game is over. Ward frozen. Diaz strikes out the side of the ninth and the Mets come from four runs down to win the opener of the series with the Angels. Three in the seventh, two in the eighth and they beat the Angels seven to five. Well, for me, the big hit in the ball game was the seventh inning, the two RBI base hit by Sodto that tied the ball game up. The eighth inning, the Angels gift wrapped two runs to the Mets and gift wrapped the W. Well, an unsung hero for the Mets, Kevin Herbert, who just called up a couple days ago, came in, gave him five outs and kind of stopped the tide of the game and gave the Mets a chance to come back in that game first with the the two-run homer. Brooksley after 15 months on the sidelines gets a win. The 15th different Met pitcher to get a victory this year. Diaz picks up his 20th save. Soda with the big hit. Mets take advantage of some shoddy Angels defense in the eighth and they beat the Angels seven to five. [Music] He froze Taylor Ward on that last slider. Well, you have one ball torn out for your coconut the pitch before. A lot of people would freeze. Sodto with the big hit. He got the two-run single. And they got the Mets even in the seventh.
