Kyoto. There is a horse. Yes, there are horses. That is a horse. The horses are kept like dogs. As we approach his house, the viewer discovers where this mountain is. That is a rare case. We can go home today, right? We head to a mountain road where cars somehow manage to pass each other. I don’t know. The good news is that it’s still light out. As long as either of us is alive. I agree. Let’s make videos with all our hearts. yes. RYUYA FUKUDA, RIZIN bantamweight. good morning. Let’s have fun today. What a peaceful town. Right? Can we go inside? here you are thank you. This is BOB. There is another cat. Do you have lots of pets? I like animals. I will hunt them though. I like animals. Do you enjoy both hunting and keeping animals? I adore my pets so much, isn’t he cute? How old is he? He is just under a year old. He was a stray cat. One night he was barking on my property. Maybe he was abandoned by someone. I found two stray cats. The other cat is quite cautious and is probably hiding in there. Or he should be sleeping over there. Please come in. MARLEY is here. MARLEY? Yes, that cat is BOB and this cat is MARLEY. Oh, that’s BOB MARLEY. That’s right. Only his tail is black. He is very cautious. This is my home. My wife is sitting over there. But please don’t reveal her face. Hello. Since when have you been living here? I have been living here for about four years. I bought this house around the time I was fighting SHINRYU in a DEEP match. My son goes to nursery school. What a lovely home. Really? Thank you. It’s peaceful here. You could only describe this place as idyllic, right? Where are the ducks you hunted in the winter? I put it in the stocker. Is that included in this? yes. The ducks are also in the freezer. I found it. I cut it in half. This is the duck I caught on February 11th. By yourself? Yes, I packed this myself. Then I freeze it. I pluck, butcher and pack the ducks. You fought against ASHIZAWA. I had duck that morning. Do you eat duck for recovery? Yes, that’s right. I think it’s better to eat the meat I catch. This is for business use, right? Yes, someone offered this to me. I am able to live this kind of life thanks to everyone’s support. I separate the meat into parts. Are these all things that you caught recently? Yes, I cut up my catch from the previous hunting season. I remove the hair, skin and organs from the animals I catch. And my wife takes the meat off the bones. She wraps it in plastic wrap and freezes it. We can survive until the next hunting season without buying meat. There’s over 100kg of meat in here, so it won’t be gone anytime soon. I will give some to those who have taken care of me. Do you want to be self-sufficient? I would like to do that in the future. I want to grow my own rice and vegetables, and catch my own meat and fish. I would love to grow them in my garden. duck, deer. Also, this is the first pheasant I have ever caught. It is said to be the most difficult part of bird shooting. I caught two of them in my first year. This is an award for me. Copperheads walk by dragging their tails along the ground. I also enjoyed eating it. My wife picks plums from the garden and makes them into syrup. Is she also self-sufficient? Yes, after all. When we first moved here, she was very against it. But everyone adapts to the environment they find themselves in. Thankfully, she followed me. Where is your child’s nursery school located? We came here through rough mountain paths. The nursery school is nearby. There is a nursery school where mountain people gather. Are there more deer than people? Yes, that’s right. They roam the area at night. The deer are playing at night. Are there bears around? yes. My wife keeps all my trophies here. what is this? This is the chili pepper I’m growing. This is like my child. The tomatoes will be ready to eat when they are a little more ripe. But when it ripens, the birds come. The birds eat a lot of it. Would you hunt that bird? If I were to shoot a bird in this community, everyone would be surprised. I will be treated as a suspicious person. Is this a bath? No, not at all. I don’t bathe outdoors. I burn waste wood here. Do you primarily burn wood? Yes, wood and grass and so on. what is this? This is a pizza oven, but it isn’t used much. Do you bake pizza? We get pizza delivered. I don’t have the option of delivery. That’s just what I thought. what is this? This is a chestnut tree, which grows and bears fruit. On fall mornings, I pick these to start my day. These are the plums used in the syrup. Is this a plum? yes. This is a chili pepper and this is perilla. I like chili peppers. I love chilli peppers. You even have a chilli pepper tattoo on your arm. Yes, I have a chili pepper tattoo. Why are you getting more tattoos? I have a contract to get a tattoo every time I win a match. A tattoo artist is one of my sponsors. Which tattoo is the one for the fight against ASHIZAWA? This is it. Which tattoo is from the fight against USHIKU? It’s this Zero fighter tattoo. My grandfather piloted it. He passed away on the day of the meeting at ZOJO-JI. TRUE? I got this tattoo before that. He was in critical condition. By the way, what is the meaning of the Medusa tattoo? This is my talisman. It’s based on my wife’s face. My opponents turn to stone when they see this. This is meant to turn them to stone. I see. That’s what it means. Would you give your wife a tattoo? For her birthday, I always tell her to get a tattoo of her choice. We are that kind of couple. That’s unusual. There aren’t many couples like us. I think that’s a very welcome offer for people who want to get a tattoo. frog. My son is catching frogs as hunting practice. Hunting practice? He wants to be a hunter in the future. Do you eat that too? No way. I don’t eat just any food. Did you install this yourself too? Yes, I combined these tubes. And I hung this one myself. I hit this all the time. Why did you start hunting in the first place? I wanted to live a normal human life. I felt this strongly when I was working for a company. In my relationships with people, I have experienced quite a few inhuman things. Were you originally an office worker? I worked as a rickshaw driver for about eight years. It was a good job and I liked it. I was a rickshaw driver and martial artist for about eight years. Did you start hunting then? When I moved here, I wanted to be a hunter. I finally got my hunting license last year. However, I never thought I would become a hunter while I was still an active martial artist. As a novice hunter, I always bow to the other hunters. I give a quick bow to my seniors. There is a lot I have to learn. Will you retire and become a hunter full time? That’s what I want to do. I feel happier living a simple life than making a ton of money and living a lavish lifestyle. Would you teach your child martial arts? He says he wants to do that. But I don’t know if he’ll actually do it because he’s scared to watch a martial arts match. He really hated me to begin with. That’s true. But when I won the Grand Prix, put on the belt and picked him up, I think he recognized that I was trying my best. From that day on, he became attached to me. Now we are very good friends. He wants to go hunting with me. I spend the whole day playing with him on my days off. I always run like this. I just stop here to pray on my way. I’m dirty so I won’t go in. Okay. Are you going to run home like this? yes. You are fast. I used to be a rickshaw driver, so I’m good at running. I always run this fast. This place is beautiful and rich in nature. I totally agree. The view is the same though. But unlike office districts, this changes with the seasons. This is the way it should be. He mentioned earlier that he gave you a tattoo for your birthday. Which tattoo did you get on your birthday? It’s this cactus. This frog too. This is one of them. I got a tattoo of the FUKUDA family crest. This is a phoenix, a type of bird. This house is in a remote location, deep in the mountains. Were you initially against living here? Yes, because I hate bugs. However, by the fourth year, I had overcome my fear of bugs. But I hate centipedes. I’ve come to think that other insects are cute. That’s a pretty big step forward. Centipedes can also be found inside the house. TRUE? yes. Will he take it? no. Even when I scream, he just asks me, “Mamushi?” There’s no way there could be a viper in this house. So I take it myself. It’s a fun family conversation. I’m sorry to stop you so suddenly. By the way, what is that file for? I’ll use this to smooth out those splinters on that wooden deck. Look at this. But I don’t know if this is the right way. Thank you for talking to me. thank you. Do you hunt here? I shoot the animals here. During hunting season, I butcher them around there. There are also boars. It suits you. Do mountains suit me? I used to play in the mountains when I was a child. A promotional video for the match was also shot on the same day. Are you the one who always cooks? No, my wife usually does the cooking. But I eat meat that I grill myself for lunch. I just bake it and don’t make anything fancy. Is that venison? This is venison thigh meat. Unexpectedly, you have a cute cutting board. Yes, there are wooden boards too. That’s big. If I catch a large animal in the snowy mountains, I can’t bring it home. I have to dismantle it in the mountains. Worst case scenario, I’ll come down the mountain with deer legs sticking out of my backpack. This is how I hold my gun. I’ve come down a mountain before with a deer’s thigh sticking out from here. Do you also do blood draws? yes. I feel sorry for them because they cry when I finish them off. I shoot at them and they just thrash around on the ground. They look like they are suffering, so I think it would be better for them to die soon. So I stick a knife in their carotid artery and let them bleed to death. This is male deer meat. Do you cook it completely? Yes, sort of. This is out of place, is this ok? Yes, but… But look at this. Now everything is back to normal. With four cameras pointed at me, I’m nervous. Do you play guitar? Yes, occasionally. Here is a guitar. Yes, but… I don’t play the guitar now. The other day you were singing and playing the guitar. TRUE? Sometimes I sing while playing the guitar. Sometimes I sing while playing the guitar, but… I don’t like someone forcing me to do that. I like to sing while playing the guitar, but I don’t like being forced to do so. We just watch it happen. No, you guys are trying to make me do that. I eat, get ready and head out. Please don’t make me use unnecessary energy. I’m pretty anxious right now. Because the camera is always pointed at me. Have you ever had a camera pointed at you all day? Yes, that was a video shoot for THE1.TV. That was also very difficult for me. Five people came storming into my tiny apartment. That day, I thought for sure I would never accept a request for close-up coverage again. I had thought they would never let a reporter into my home, but this is what happened. Why did you accept us? I didn’t want to do that. But you act like, “You know this is part of your job, right?” Right? Is this spring water? Yes, I am going to get this. I drink this every day. So, I’ll try this. I also make this yuzu kosho myself. It is made from yuzu that I received from a farmer and chillies that I grow in my garden. Would you try this? This is delicious. Right? I drop my kids off at daycare, go for a run, and hit the punching bag in the backyard. Then I get motivated and think to myself, “This is what I’m going to practice today,” and head down the mountain. I have been a martial artist for a long time. When I enter MIBURO, I feel like another day is beginning. I like it very much. I feel truly happy and living life to the fullest. I’m happy to be able to be serious about it. He was totally okay with us filming him in the car. No, I don’t accept that. Please don’t just make up stories. I haven’t even agreed to it. How scary, that’s the tactic people like you use. That’s a tactic used by people in the mass media and city dwellers, right? Please have some coffee. thank you. It may be a soup base for noodles, but try it. If this was a soup base for noodles… In that case, I’ll give you a ride in my car. What if this was a soup base for noodles? This is the soup base for the noodles. That is absolutely not true. Well, let’s go. He is angry. Where are you heading? I’m finally going to practice. That is the time I am most looking forward to and excited about. It’s the moment I face the most fun things in life. You have three cars at home. That pickup truck is for carrying the animals I hunt. This is for my own transportation. I call this GINJIRO. I name the tools I love. What’s the name of that pickup truck? That is Mr. SUZUKI. Because that’s a Suzuki Carry. I used to have a pickup truck called KURO-OBI. It died in the mountains. TATSURO TAIRA regularly invites me as a sparring partner. That was the first time I received any compensation. I bought it with that reward. I always buy old pickup trucks under $100,000. The Suzuki was also 150,000 yen including inspection. Because I would screw it up anyway. Changing the subject, were you a bit naughty when you were a student? no. I graduated from high school without any problems. How much did you fight? What kind of question is that? Have you ever had 10 fights that you can remember? Yes, probably. Have you ever been challenged to a fight by someone or started a fight yourself? Whenever I got into a fight with someone, their seniors would try to get back at me. At what age did you start martial arts? When I was 17 years old, I joined a gym called PUREBRED KYOTO. Is it kickboxing or MMA? That’s MMA. Was that your first exposure to martial arts? When I was in the first year of junior high school, my father left me in Thailand. I spent about three months living in a Muay Thai gym. He told me, “Let’s go on a trip.” So he took me to that gym in a taxi. He told me, “Here’s your return ticket.” He told me “see you” and left in a taxi. First of all, I didn’t understand Thai. I interacted with people through gestures. There were some kids younger than me. They taught me Muay Thai. In the end, everyone was sad to see me return home, just like in the TV show “URURUN TAIZAIKI.” I was sad too. It may have been the first time I felt such a deep connection with someone. Did that lead you to start martial arts? No, I didn’t do martial arts for a while after I returned to Japan. Why did you decide to return to martial arts at age 17? A lot of people recommended it to me. For example, “Go to a martial arts gym” or “You can fight a lot.” Did you want to fight? I guess I’ve always had the desire to fight. I went to that gym and met the current director. I was defeated on the first day and came home covered in blood. I was disappointed. You weren’t thinking of quitting the gym, were you? I was determined to do it again. But as I got more serious about martial arts, I became more and more obsessed with it. I was in high school at the time, so everyone took good care of me. Gradually, I began to feel the same comfort there that I had felt in Thailand. It’s like the warmth I felt in the Muay Thai gym. I felt this from the current director and my predecessors. And so I decided to give martial arts a full life. However, PUREBRED KYOTO has been closed. That might have been the first time I ever cried that hard in front of people. I lost my place to practice. Then the current director said to me, “I will open a dojo, and you should work hard there and become a professional fighter.” He founded MIBURO. Is that where MIBURO began? That’s right. He saw me crying and said, “I’ll do it.” He is a modest person and does not usually express his opinions openly. I was so happy that someone like that opened a gym for me. And that brings me to where I am today. And this was just after he got married. His wife was pregnant and he opened the gym while still working. A long time later, I found myself in his shoes. I realized, “UETA opened the gym for me during such a difficult time.” Even now, that makes me happy. It’s what motivates me to keep working hard. MIBURO is good. How successful I am will impact MIBURO. I think I have two or three more years in my prime as a martial artist. During that time, I want to fight with all my might. At the end of last year, when your match with ASHIZAWA was scheduled, you said you felt sorry for the other DEEP fighters. It is a place where people are working hard and competing with each other regardless of their level of fame. I felt sorry for them. I thought there would be many DEEP fighters wondering, “How can ASHIZAWA do that?” Is it because they are waiting their turn? Yes, it was like grade skipping. On the contrary, I think I am in that position now at RIZIN. What did you think when you were asked to fight INOUE? I was very surprised. Like, “What?” Because the opponent I fought before was ASHIZAWA. I fought ASHIZAWA at the end of the year and then I was asked to fight the champ. I fought USHIKU at DEEP, but… There may be some fighters who are unhappy with me fighting Inoue. INOUE is one of the top players in the country. So yeah, I’m really looking forward to that. Your appearance at the ZOJO-JI press conference was very exciting. That was truly “OBRIGADO”. Why do you use “OBRIGADO”? That happened when I was a rickshaw driver. A Brazilian said to me, “OBRIGADO” and I thought, “What?” When I told a senior colleague at the office about this, he said, “Apparently, OBRIGADO was originally the same as ARIGATO.” I don’t know if that’s true. I thought that saying “OBRIGADO” would convey gratitude to all of humanity. Ever since I was about 18 years old, I’ve been saying “OBRIGADO” out of habit. There’s no deeper meaning to it. It doesn’t seem to mean much, just like KURO-OBI and GINJIRO. I’m basically the type of person who doesn’t think too deeply. At the press conference at ZOJO-JI, you seemed a little depressed. Just at that time, I was informed via LINE that my grandfather had passed away. So I was pretty depressed. I regretted not being there when he passed away. Was that when the meeting started? It was just when announcer SUZUKI said, “Champion NAOKI INOUE vs. challenger RYUYA FUKUDA,” and everyone cheered. As his grandson, I intend to play a game that will not disappoint him. I want to live my life in a way that doesn’t disappoint him. Ok, you told me quite a bit about yourself. About 30 minutes passed. yes. How long do you plan to film me? Kyoto MMA Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Dojo MIBURO. This place is very spacious and beautiful. Yes, we laid the mats ourselves, which we brought from PUREBRED KYOTO. This place has been steadily upgraded and now really looks like a dojo. That’s KAMO RIVER, right? In the past, I often ran along the Kamo River. I used to run after my job as a rickshaw puller. I was running a distance equivalent to a full marathon every day. During peak season, I would run 30-37km a day. After that, I went to practice. YU UETA, Director of MIBURO. I was drinking water that wasn’t my own. The Zero fighter’s registration number is “Kyoto 326,” which stands for MIBURO. Let’s do it. I can’t do that. I couldn’t do that. . thank you. You still have a long way to go. My condition will continue to improve. I haven’t repaid him enough yet. If he hadn’t cried when PUREBRED KYOTO closed, this place would never have opened, right? At that moment, I understood how he felt. I’ve always been subservient to him. I respect him. I think we have a good relationship. yes. There has never been a bad relationship between us. what is this? This is MIBURO’s message board. Bulletin board? How pathetic considering you’re competing in a title match at RIZIN. That is nothing but insults. Don’t forget that I remember your face. Are you going home yet? I’ll stop by the public bath before going home. Because I did intensive training yesterday and the day before yesterday. You’ll go back up that mountain path from here, right? Yes, I will cleanse myself in the public bath before that. Since MIBURO is a dojo, there are no showers. I cleanse myself and then head back up the mountain. Many of your fans will be coming from Kyoto to support you. I’m really happy about that. You have to show them an exciting match. Yes, they are quite harsh. They come to watch my matches like addicts, looking for more excitement. I don’t want them to say, “He chose to play it safe because he was afraid of losing.” “He chose to play it safe in the title match because he was afraid of losing.” I definitely don’t want them to say that. I plan to give them the most inspiration of the day. I’m going to enjoy the game to the fullest. thank you very much. See you again in Saitama. I will come to your house again next week. Please don’t come to my house. I’ve had enough. I will not be giving interviews anymore. be careful. thank you. thank you very much. OBRIGADO.
