MLB LIVE🔴 Houston Astros vs Seattle Mariners – Jul 20, 2025 | Full Game MLB 2025 EN VIVO

So, just about set now and on the mound today, Logan Gilbert. What do you have on him? Well, he’s been a very dependable starter for his club. And what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him. And it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball. Maybe it’s the release point, maybe it’s the motion, but just some way somehow they’ve got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side. Isach Paradis leading things off. Takes a strike. First 111. Next off in there for a strike and the count is 0 and two. Swing and strike came out and it was on. Well, that pitch wasn’t even close to being a strike. And that just goes to show you how defensive hitters can be calm when they’re up against an 02 count. He was hoping for mistakes somewhere near the zone that you can get the bat to, but right there he was clearly anxious. He was swinging when the ball left the hand. Cam Smith up next for the Astros. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Swing and a ball lifted in the air left field. Pretty well struck. That’s back there. Gone. And the Astros jump in front. It’s one- nothing. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. Sometimes we say it’s a sinker that didn’t sink. Well, that was a splitter that just didn’t split. Kind of like a BP fast ball. And when you throw that pitch, don’t expect to get it back. You’re getting a new baseball from the umpire. One out, base is empty. Jose Altuve up next for the Astros. And first offering is fouled off. Gilbert, when you talk about his skill set, he stops teams from getting hits. That’s the thing that he’s so good at. He’s just really difficult to get base hits against. Next offering is down low. Well, he’s got power and he has a reputation of being a strikethrower. So, to his advantage, he can expand the zone. Pitch misses outside and it’s two and one. He can throw that fast ball slightly above the top of the strike zone to get hitters to chase. He can also break it off because when you’re geared up for good velocity, it’s hard to stay back. You have to make a decision really early. So, what’s the approach from an offensive perspective against a guy that doesn’t give up a lot of hits? I think you just kind of have to lean out over the plate and go take your base. But seriously, you you just have to try to shorten up. I think guys choking up on the bat a little bit to have some more bat control. Be a little bit quicker and don’t get greedy. Two out. Space is empty. And now it’s Christian Walker. And that one upstairs. Ball one. [Applause] and that is downstairs and the count now two and nothing. Two out space is empty. Swinging a ground ball up the middle. Lays out, but he can’t squeeze it. No throw. And they come away without an out. That is it. The catcher number 17, Victor Keratini. Two outs, runner at first. Vic Keratini at the plate. First pitch just misses. [Applause] Fast ball is outside. Oh, he’s really working him away this at bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a roll over something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. [Applause] And another ball. Walker the runner at first with two gone. [Applause] Hey, [Applause] hot shot to first base and he snags it to Indiana. But they’re off to a good start as they pick up a run on this solo shot. It’s an early one- nothing lead. Back after this on the show. Back at T-Mobile Park and towing the slab in this one, Colton Gordon. And Chris, pitching on the road has not been particularly kind to him. Yeah. And you don’t want to be too quick to say that he can’t pitch on the road. Sometimes, you know, it’s just a matter of luck. difference to the mound out there. Don’t know what it is, but I know this, he’s got good enough to overcome and get it done on the road as well as at home. So, we’ll see what he’s able to do in this one. [Applause] [Music] Right through there for his strike. J just missed. Fouls one off. Two and two. [Music] Just off the outside part of the plate. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. On the ground right side. Oh, he gloves it. Takes it himself and he got him. Nicely done at first for the out. Well, he makes a great decision to go ahead and dive to stop that ball. Nice little flip to the pitcher covering. Those are those PFPs, pitchers fielding plays. And now it’s Julio Rodriguez. Not getting the results he’s wanted at the plate recently. Barely hitting over the Mendoza line this month. Ripped on a line. Hummel makes the grab and there’s two gone. And now we check out the Mariners lineup. One guy leading the way offensively for this club right now. Dominic Kzone. Tops on the team in batting average. Boo. a guy who’s showing off some excellent bat-to ball ability when he digs in at the plate. You know, that’s useful if your team needs to get an inning going, get a leadoff man on, but it’s also incredible to have a guy like that in the lineup because he’s a run producer who can drive in runs if you’ve got guys on base already. So, he’s a huge piece in this lineup. Cal Raleigh stands in with two away as he takes a ball. That one way inside. He’s great hitting the ball the other way and that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. Swinging a foul. Pushed off to the right. Two down. Nobody on. Sliced hard but fouled. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. It’s in and out of his glove. Still able to fire over. Misplay doesn’t cost him. Inning over. Mariners go down quietly there. They trail here one- nothing. Second inning set to go. Here’s Taylor Trel. Taylor trael Gilbert back to work. That’s down and in. That’s a really good take right there. Slider down and in. Very difficult to get on the same plane and do anything with. [Music] [Applause] That one pulled foul. The one-1 is fouled off. Pitch misses. It’s two and two. [Music] Hit in the air left field a Rosarena and makes the grab and there’s one away. [Applause] Batting seven, the third baseman. Here’s Mauricio Dubon. move on. First pitch misses. Base hit. So a man aboard now with one away. Batting eight, the left fielder Cooper. Now here is Cooper Hmel. Late swing fouled to the left. Man at first, one away. Upon behind the plate for us today, Boo is Mike Filmore. And he is a good one. He’ll reward pitches on the edges a little bit, but the main thing is he doesn’t keep you guessing. Once he established that a pitch is a strike, it stays that way. Swing and a miss. And he struck him out. and he’s registered three Ks in this one. But that kind of velocity, an elevated fast, even if it’s still in the strike zone, can be tough for hitters to get on top of. [Applause] Now it’s Zack Short. [Music] All one [Music] and a pinch that’s in there and the count one and one. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone, middle away. And that’s a strike out. Mike Filmore says he won a round. So the Astros lead one, but they’re on top one- nothing. Back in Seattle, we head to the bottom of the second. Digging in Randy or Rosarena. He’s got which is a little sneaky because he’s so comfortable with taking his base hits to the opposite field, but he can jump you if you make a mistake. Ball one and a pitch inside. Just missed with a good breaking ball in looking for that hitter to chase and perhaps get some weak contact or swing and miss. Good job on both sides and a foul ball. He’s a bad ball hitter. So even if you get him to chase pitches outside the zone, he still might beat you. Not an easy out by any means. Swings through the fast ball up in the zone. One ball, two strike. To the right side onto first. They get the out on a Rosarena. Batting the designated hitter, Luke. And now for Seattle, Luke. Come on, Seattle. That clips a corner. Next offering is downstairs. [Applause] Swing and a highf fly ball left field. He’s got it and there’s two away. Patting six. The catcher Mitch Mitch Garver up to him here. up the middle. Altuve slings to first. That’s the inning. Three up, three down for him. There we play two full. It’s the Astros one and the Mariners nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. The batter now, Isak Paradis. Paradis. Paradis goes 5 feet 11 in hitting lead off in today’s game. He’s usually a third baseman, but today he’s the designated hitter and he’ll one. Little bit of a day off for him. Instead of being at the hot corner, he can just kind of put the batting gloves on, hold the bat as he sits on the bench waiting for his time to hit. And the slider just misses. Really close pitch down around the knees there. And you could see him asking where it missed. Probably doesn’t agree, but it appears he’s ready to move on to the next pitch. On the ground to first. He takes it on his own. And one away in the top of the third. The right fielder Cam Smith. Now it’s the right fielder Cam Smith. He’s already homered in this game. Little bit low. And that’s ball one [Music] and he swings through that one. Wow. No fair right there. I mean, one that slider didn’t move till the very last moment. Incredibly difficult to pick that up. Just kind of have to tip your cap on that pitch. This one popped up. Raleigh. And there are two outs. Now batting the second baseman, Jose Altuve. Here’s the former MVP, Jose Altuve. Struck out looking in his first at bat. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. One line to left and foul ball. Two outs. spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. That missed by a lot. One and two to count and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Next offering down in the dirt. Well, this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the at bat. I’m sure there’s sometimes where a pitcher would rather just give up a first pitch single than to have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter. That one out to right. drops into the glove and that is that and we’re back. Bottom of the inning now it’s going to be Dominic Hanselone and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. 01’s the count. Hit in the air left field. That one gets down for a hit. So, a runner aboard to start the inning. Here’s the rookie third base, Ben Williamson. Williamson. check swing called strike. Well, the key to his success is getting ahead early in the count. He cannot afford to go deep in accounts. Doesn’t have a ton of swing and miss stuff, so he’s going to have to work efficiently. Line drive. No trouble here. puts it away for the out and there’s one down. Batting nut, the second baseman, Cole Young. And up next for Seattle, Cole Young. You know, this is kind of a tough matchup as a left-handed hitter facing a left-handed pitcher. And what you tell yourself is I want to stay square to the plate. Try to hit the ball over the shortstop’s head. Swing and a miss. It’s 0 and one. On one. And that’s in there at the knees. Tying run is at first here in the last half of the third. [Applause] Fouls it back with two strikes. Next offering misses down and away. Well, he might have to look for a different putaway pitch right here, too. Two. He’s already seen the curve ball a couple of times in this at bat, so might have it timed up and ready for it. Popped up. Altuve. He’s there. He’s got it. Two down. The batter number three, shortstop, JP Crawford. Back to the top of the Seattle order and stepping in for the Mariners. JP Crawford 0 for one. He grounded out to first his last time. Kenzone off of first with two away. Slow ground ball to the right side. That’s the third out. Inning over. So, no runs here on a base hit. No errors and one left. On to inning number four. It’s the Astros one and the Mariners nothing. Back at T-Mobile Park, John Shambi with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Christian Walker. Let’s go Seattle. Let’s go. And he’s swinging a miss. He’s pitching well, but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes. Usually doesn’t work out for success, but you can never predict baseball. And a swing and a miss. There’s that slider. Two strikes. Swings through. That’s a strike out. Well, he made pretty quick work of them right there. You look at the sequence, everything down at the knees and below. And some guys are good low ball hitters, but right there they clearly had a plan to pound that part of the zone and he wasn’t able to put up much of a fight. So next up for Houston, Victor Keratini 0 for one so far. And that’s in for a strike. Here’s something cool, Boo. When they finished building T-Mobile Park back in 1999, they actually opened it up in the middle of the season. I remember as a rookie with the Chicago White Socks, we opened the season at the Kingdome and then when we came back later in the year, we were playing at T-Mobile Park. It’s a beautiful place, great scenery from center field and I always enjoyed playing here. One out, base is empty inside. Almost got him. Two balls, two strikes. Swaying and a ball popped in the air. Now batting the center fielder Taylor Trl. And now the center fielder Taylor Trmelll fly to left his first time. Strike one. [Applause] misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike. [Music] Line drive, base hit right field. And the lead runner holds on at second base. Now batting third baseman, Mauricio. Now the third baseman, Mauricio Dubong, one for one with a single so far. just missed. Could use a ground ball here. Something in the infield. Runner at first base. Get two. Get out of this. One out. Runners at first and second. [Music] And that is out of play. [Applause] And that’s downstairs now. Two balls in a strike. Good spot for the hitter. Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. [Applause] [Music] Now there’s a bullet down the line. That’s down. One hops off the wall. In comes the run from second. It’s two zip. He gets it done in a big spot to get the run across. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages working on going to the opposite field and it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did. And he did it perfectly. So, two in scoring position with one out. Cooper Hmel will hit next. Golden opportunity right here. That’s in there. Strike one. [Applause] And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Ryan Woo, the hardth throwing righty is up and loosening. Number 67 also getting ready. Two on, one out. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield. One run across the throw in. Safe at the plate and the run scores all the way from second and they lead by four. Four hits in a row and they’re really swinging it here. Once you get the ball by the pitcher, there’s a lot of base hits up the middle, even on ground balls. So, a nice job to use that big hole and get himself a hit. One gone, runner at first. And stepping in for the Astros, Zack Short, 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. He swings and fouls one off. Hummel leads off first with one away. [Applause] Swing and a miss as he was out front that time. [Applause] One ball, two strike. And they’ll do it again. Gilbert with a move to first. Hmel back in on a dive. [Applause] That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. [Applause] This one in the air. Raleigh calls it in. Two away. Boy, that was a hanging breaking ball right there. I think he tried to do a little bit too much. Sometimes those eyes can get really big. I think his swing broke down as well and that’s what caused him to pop it up. Back to the top of the lineup. Isak Paredus the next to hit. Go for two in this one. [Music] [Applause] He was late there. Strike one. Good pitch right there. Anytime you can get one by a bat of this caliber, especially with runners on, it’s got to give you some confidence out there on the mound that you can win this battle. Now move to first. Hmel back on a dive. So a foul ball makes it one and two. Two outs. Foul ball still a one and two count [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and downstairs already three runs across in the frame. Top half of inning number four. Hit on the ground to short. Crawford got him on the offbalance throw and that is the inning. Three runs on, four hits, no errors, and one left on. We’re midway in the fourth. It’s the Astros four and the Mariners nothing. Bottom four. And now for Seattle. Julio Rodriguez. center fielder Julio Rodriguez and that misses and it’s one and0. Well, these Mariners as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate. So many of their outs have come from weak contact on pitches. They’re chasing outside of the strike zone. You can’t do much of anything with those locations. And that’s been true again today. Swings through that one for strike two. And as a pitcher, when the hitters are swinging at everything, you feel no need to challenge inside the zone. You just keep working the corners and expanding that strike zone and beyond. And they just keep eating right out of your hand. Walker takes it to the bag. Lead off hitter retired in the fourth. Raleigh. And up next for Seattle, Cal Raleigh. He has, as they like to say, let me guess, boo. Light tower power. That’s right. And the first pitch misses for ball one. That one ripped right center field in one. Hops off the wall. Should be extra bases into second with a double. And they’ve got something brewing now. Seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there. When you connect and it jumps off your bat like that, you’re thinking double at the very least. put a great swing on it and man, he wasn’t fooled at all. Could be a chance here for them to start clawing back into this ball game. Now it’s Randy Rosarena 0 for one. He ground it out in his first at bat. [Applause] Just off the outside edge. One and0. And a fast ball in there for a strike at 91. Swing and a high-fly ball right field. Smith makes the grab. Two down. Now batting the designated hitter, Luke. Next is the designated hitter, Luke. Fly to left his first time. Let’s go. A dive. Nice stop to his knee. The throw on the money. Nice play. Making it look easy at the Keystone position. Definitely worth another look. He’ll get some high fives when he gets into the dugout. Now pitching back and there’s a new arm on the mound to start the fifth. Brian Woo still pretty early in the ball game. So this bullpen has some work ahead of him. Best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs kind of bridge the gap that starter left for him. Smith in the box again takes the strike. Well, these Astros putting together some really good at bats in this game. There’s been a lot to like with how they’re approaching their chances at the plate. It looked to me like they really wanted to get to the starter early, get him out of the game before he settles in. So, I’d say mission accomplished. [Music] Got him. And a quick out. The batter Jose Altuve up to hit here. Altuve officially joined the 2000 hit club in 2023 with every career hit as a Houston Astro. Third player in club history with 2,000 hits and 200 home runs. Jeff Bagwell, Craig Bio, those are the two others. And that’s some great company, Boo. And another ball there. There’s the strike. [Applause] Base is empty. One away. And we’re in the top of the fifth. spoils that one and it remains two and two. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. One down. Base is empty. That to right Kenzone. He makes the grab. That’s out number two. The first baseman, number eight, Christian. Two down, base is empty. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Christian Walker. One for two. That’s in there. [Applause] Hammered down the right side but foul [Music] swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. Garver brings it in for the third out. So, no runs, no hits, no errors, and no one left. Last half of the fifth coming up, it’s the Astros four and the Mariners nothing. Back in Seattle and now the catcher comes up to him, Miss Garver. Garver. Gordon back to work and the first pitch misses for ball one. Well, these Mariners just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. Chasing pitches has been a big part of the story. We’ve seen it quite a bit today. It’s been tough for him to make contact at times and it just doesn’t look like they’re seeing it very well as a group. Fast for a strike and on the mound, you know, confidence has to be pretty high with all of the swings and misses. He’s had them eaten out of the palm of his hand pretty much all game. Two-1 pitch is in there and the count is even [Music] swings here and drives one well left field way back and you can’t forget it. He flexes his power with that swing. His second home run of the series. And they’re on the board. It’s 4-1. That could be one of those swings that really helps spark this offense. Knew what pitch he wanted to hit. spent on some other pitches in this at bat. Was very patient and it paid off. [Applause] Dominic Panzone now at the plate. [Applause] First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Oh, you just got to delete it. You give up that leadoff home run. Go back to work. Focus on this next batter. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in. Last half of inning number five. Next offering is in for a strike. And that’s downed away. You got two balls, one strike. Oh, that’s out. He hasn’t fallen behind in the count like this all day. He’s in danger of walking his first batter right here. Swinging a foul out of play. You can see he was trying to stay back long enough to handle the off speed pitch, but just a little tardy on the fast ball. This one lifted in the air left field. Hummel puts it away. One away. Now batting third baseman Ben Williams. So digging in Ben Williamson. He’s 0 for one. And that one fouled off. That one the other way. throw to first in time. I don’t know what it looks like going through the zone for those hitters, but the swings are defensive and that’s a real indicator along with just the other stuff you guys have noticed about how nasty he is right now. Two outs, space is empty. Cole Young up next for the Mariners. He popped out his first time. [Applause] Fast ball in for a strike. 0 and one swing and a miss and he was fooled. That pitch started in and ended up on the outside edge just changing planes and very difficult especially for a left-handed hitter to track Dubon to first. Third out that ends the frame. One run closer for Seattle after this solo shot. It’s now a 4-1 ball game. and welcome back to the ballpark. All right, we go to the top half of inning number six and here is Victor Keratini, the right-hander back to work. Foul ball there. Keratini 31 years old and he was born in Puerto Rico. 0 and two now. And that one is inside. Activity in the bullpen. Taylor Sedo the left-hander up and throwing. Number 67 getting loose as well. The one two pulls it in for the eye. Now back the center fielder Taylor. And here is Taylor Trmell. And first offering is fouled off. One down. Base is empty. That one’s in there. That is strike two. Wow. Just a beautiful back door slider right there. If you’ve got any chance of hitting that pitch, you have to wait until the absolutely last millisecond. Just a tough pitch to hit and not an easy one to throw either. And the 02 ball one, one ball, two strikes to count. Fights it off. He’ll see another. That’s a little high. And that’s ball two. Two two the count. Swing and a miss. Stuck him out. The high heat. Too much on that one. Boogie just ran out of patience there. He took a couple of pitches. now to even that count up at two balls and two strikes, but that time chased outside the zone. Mauricio Dubon up next for the Astros. Dubon having a lot more success on the road this season. First pitch misses. Two down, nobody on. And we’re the top half of the sixth. And there’s a foul ball. That one way outside and it’s two and one. Right through there for a strike. Still two and two after the foul ball. Lifted in the air down the left side that gets down for a hit. Joey gets on base and keeps it going. a late jump and I think that was the difference on the play. Boo. It’s not always easy seeing the ball off the bat. Something to improve. So, two down. Cooper Hmel up next for the Astros. First pitch and he just misses. There’s the strike. Dubong leads off first with two down to the inning. So a foul ball makes it one and two. That’s inside. And it remains two and two. Come on in. Caught him looking for. So, one hit is all they get. Top of the order. Two up in the home half of the six. It’s the Astros four and the Mariners won. [Applause] And we’re back. Now it’s the short stop JP Crawford. Shortstop JP Crawford that misses ball one. [Applause] Fast ball for a strike. That one is absolutely belted. That’s back there. And it is gone. He made pay for that one. It’s his eighth home run of the year. And they inch closer. It’s 4-2. Things might get pretty interesting if they keep connecting on pitches like that. Looks like this guy was looking out over the plate, but he was ready to turn on the inside fast. so direct to the pitch. Absolutely blasted out of this ballpark. Rodriguez up to the plate for the third time as he looks at one down low. [Applause] The one just missed. The real threats are coming up. Already giving up a home run in this inning. He’s going to really have to bear down. That’s ball three. Nobody on, nobody out here in the bottom of the six. Here’s a highf fly ball out to center. Tal settles underneath it and there’s one down. It’s a good recovery though after giving up the home run. Not allowing it to stay in the head but going to work at the next hitter and a tough one at that. Now here’s the switch hitting power threat. Cal Raleigh. This guy is one of the best athletes in the sport. and delivers outside. Part of the order coming through now and with one home run already in this inning, they’re definitely looking to do some more damage. And another ball. Well, they gave up the home run earlier in this inning. Not pitching as aggressively here. And a foul ball makes the count two and one. [Applause] And a slider in the outside corner for a strike. Man, this guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming swing and a ball popped in the air and that will fall. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Got to love the resiliency he showed in that at bat. Battling with two strikes. You can’t do much better than that on a pitch that far outside of the strike zone. Got to be chasing the two strike count. But he wasn’t fooled. He hit that ball really well. Man at first with one gone. Randy Rosarena getting ready to hit. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. Ball one. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Steven Ochre, the left-hander, is getting that big fast ball of his ready to go. Or the right-hander, loosening up as well. [Applause] Swanging and a miss. There’s the change up. One and one. [Applause] And that skips in the dirt. Way to lay off that pitch down. [Applause] There’s the strike. Well, you can’t really adjust your game plan for that last pitch. Guy hasn’t thrown it very much. You got to focus on the stuff that he’s throwing out there most of the time. [Applause] And that’s off the inside edge. Good count now. Calling this count. Runner not known for his speed, but I think you got to put him in motion. Try to avoid a double play here, Bo. In the air, right center. This is mashed way back and gone. [Music] That should put a jolt into this home crowd. It’s their second home run of the inning and we’re starting over. It’s 44. Listen to these fans. This place is absolutely buzzing right now. You can feel the energy all the way up here in our broadcast booth. That’s an impressive swing at the bat to go over the wall to the opposite field gap for guys that just don’t have the pop to do that and probably just as many who don’t have the approach either. He let that ball travel and he got great extension on the follow through to drive it out of here. Here comes a skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move. Colton Gordon out of the game and it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. back with a new arm after a quick break. Now pitching and from Valdez into the game. He’s got a wicked breaking ball in his arsenal and it’s definitely one of his go-to pitches when he needs an out. Luke will hit next. And that’s in the dirt. And that’s ball one. [Applause] And that’s in the dirt. Still only one out here in the inning. [Applause] check swing and he went two and one now. Two ball, one strike. That one fouled off. [Applause] Gets a piece and stays alive. [Applause] spoils that one and it remains two and two. [Applause] That’s a little bit low. [Applause] Battling here as he fouls it away. Ninth pitch of the at bat. do next guy. He battled for a long time, but it finishes with a strike out. You can’t be mad at yourself after an at bat like that one. Now the Mariners catcher Mitch Garver. He’s already homerred here in this one. [Applause] And the first pitch misses for ball one. That smashed towards center. That is the inning. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working. All even now at four a piece. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Trent Thornton. Well, he’s been hit pretty hard at times this season as you see with the big erra. So, this is an important outing for him to get on the right track. Thton stepping in, Zack Short, the short stop. Zack Short, first pitch doesn’t find the zone. If you’re the pitcher, you’ve got to go right at this guy. It’s the number nine hitter in the lineup. You can’t be afraid of contact in this situation. The 10. That one hit to right. Kenzone and there’s one down. The batter number 15. Here’s the Astros leadoff man, Isach Paradus. Outfield deep here trying to prevent anything over their heads. There’s the strike. Next offering in there for a strike and it’s nothing in two. Well, he’s gotten ahead with two pitches down in the zone. He has plenty of options right here. He can go up, he can go away, he can add velocity, he can subtract. [Applause] That one just misses. Going to count one and two. Sit him down. [Applause] Strike him out. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Swing and a bouncer out to short. Crawford throw off line. He’s safe and a nice job there to keep it from getting away. That’s a play you expect your shortstop to make pretty much every time. Pretty routine. Hard to tell if he didn’t get a great grip on it or the mechanics on him just broke down, but that gives this offense an extra out to work with. Go ahead run on base and next to hit for Houston, Cam Smith [Applause] on the ground right side. Four, six, three, double play and the inning is over. Pitcher made the pitch and his players made the play behind him. Nice job. 463 inning ending double play. And stepping in for the Mariners, Dominic Kenzone has singled and he has flyed to left. First offering in the dirt. There’s the strike. 95 of that one. Go. [Applause] Tied at four. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. [Music] And that’s outside. Not close with that one. Three and two now. [Applause] [Music] It’s a lead off walk and that’s the go-ahead run. A great back and forth in that at bat. He had to lay off some really close pitches and somehow Boogie found a way to keep the bat on his shoulder right there. I’ll tell you right now, I couldn’t have done it. And there’s a base hit to right field. Throw holds him at second, but the go ahead run now in scoring position and still nobody out. Didn’t take long to get a result for that at bat. Anytime you rip a line drive the other way, you feel really good about what you did at the plate. You trusted your hands. You let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it. That’s great work right there. A chance now to take the lead. And at this point in the game, that could be a deciding run. Next to hit, Cole Young squares, pushes at it, misses it. It’s a strike and it’s 0 and one [Applause] [Music] and that bunted towards third and he bare hands it. Off balance feed. There’s one, but no throw to first as he’ll hold on to it. Oh, that was pretty right there. Beautiful play with the bear. Next up, JP Crawford. JP Crawford gets a chance to hit. It’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. [Applause] First pitch just misses. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning [Applause] with the go ahead run at third here. The bottom of the seventh [Applause] squirts away a little bit. Two, one strike, but no advance from the runners. [Applause] Lefty out of the stretch, runners at first and third. Chris, with that distraction and a speedy guy at first, he’s in a favorable hitters count. Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is a great spot for a hitter to be in. [Applause] Kenzone, the runner at third, Young at first, one gone. [Applause] [Applause] fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. Well, he knows they don’t want to give him anything to hit, but when you’ve got opportunities to drive in runs, you’ve got to expand the zone. He’s capable of going out there and doing damage with it. [Applause] Two on, one out. Stays alive. [Applause] Foul ball and it remains a full cow. About to see the 11th pitch of the bat. Here he goes down looking. Oh, that was such a great opportunity to grab the lead. You had the infield back. All you got to do is just put the ball in play on the ground and you drive across a run. It’s a frustrating outcome for the hitter. Still have a chance, but it’s probably going to take a clutch hit with two outs. Julio Rodriguez coming to the plate now in a big spot. And that’s in there for strike one. Two on, two outs. That one catches the corner for a strike. And a bat like this is almost over as it begins. In this situation, you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be. You just got to hope that you can make contact outside with a breaking ball. Recognize that change up right out of the hand. Just spit on it. spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another [Applause] that misses and the count is even. Two and two. [Applause] Runners on first and third. Two away. [Applause] Next pitch is outside. 3-2. Two out. Runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. He’s got to stay focused on the pitch. Cal Raleigh would be next. Big bat with a potentially huge opportunity. He fouls it off. Will do it again. [Applause] Swinging a foul ball at the plate. They’ll do it again. [Applause] And that’ll load the bases. Pretty good pitch on 3-2. Right around the knees, but just not from the umpire. Manager out of the dugout now. And he’ll make a move to dip into the Astros bullpen. Rober Valdez won’t go any further and he leaves with the bases loaded. So he’ll look for some help from his teammate coming in behind him. Now pitching. So they turn to the veteran pitcher in this spot, Caleb. And he’s had a struggle so far this year. As you can see, the inflated erra looking to bring that down a little bit right here. So, bases all loaded up. Raleigh the next to hit. He’s one of the best players in the game. There’s the strike. It’s a tough pitch, but in terms of the best pitch you’re going to get to hit in the at bat, that fast ball was down enough where you’re going to catch up to one. That’s the one. When she elevates, guys aren’t touched it. [Applause] All loaded up. Dangerous hitter at the plate. And a count one and two. [Applause] And that’s outside. [Applause] So they’re all loaded up with two outs. It’s a healthy cut. Tough pitch at 98, but a really good pass at the ball. Got him. Huge strike out there. A lot of adrenaline. We can see it right there. And sometimes you just got to let it out. That’s an outstanding job of taking that, executing, and getting out of a tough inning. So out of the bullpen for the Mariners, Matt Brash. 25th appearance of the year for him. Number 47, Matt. Now it’s the second baseman, Jose Altuve, 0 for three with two fly outs and a strikeout. [Applause] Ball one, no strikes. Some activity in the Mariners bullpen. Andres Munoz getting ready to go. Number 67 warming up as well. [Music] [Applause] And that clips the inside corner. I got one ball, one strike. [Applause] Ripped into left center for a base hit. So the go-ahead run is on base with a knock. Always feels amazing getting the job done when the team needs you to come through. It’s just bigger than your own individual stats. Just a solid swing right there. Caught it out front and ripped it into the outfield for the base hit. Those always feel great. Go ahead run on base. Christian Walker up next for the Astros. One for three. [Applause] This one in the air right field. zone. Yeah, there’s the one away. The catcher number 17, Victor. Now the catcher up to hit. Victor Keratini definitely wants to stay out of the double play here. Ball on the ground in the infield. Should be an inning ending double play and fouled off. Power relievers one after another coming out of the bullpen these days. Got to be ready for that first pitch heater. And that one fouled off. One away. Tie game. Go ahead run stands at first. Swing and a miss. That’s a strike out. Couldn’t catch up to the heater. Taylor Tral up next for the Astros. Taylor Tral. If you’re a base runner, you got to stay dialed in here. Look for anything in the dirt. Try your best to get into scoring position. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Two gone. The possible go ahead run at first. [Applause] Check swing and he went and that’s strike two. And a foul ball. He stays alive. [Applause] That’s a ball with a go ahead run at first. And we’re in the top of the eighth. fights it off. He’ll see another. Well, he missed a hitable off speed pitch right there. Not sure exactly with the timing. Sometimes you get a backup breaking ball. You’re expecting it to make its move at the end. It never does and you’re tied up. [Applause] And that one almost hit him. [Applause] Ground ball right side. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. One hit, one left. Home half of inning number eight straight ahead and we are tied 4-4. So, here’s the cleanup hitter, Randy Roserena. [Applause] Yeah, the pitch is in for a strike. Going on action in the pen down there. Steven Ochre up and throwing. Get another one. [Applause] Gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. Wow, he got away with a mistake right there. [Applause] A swing and a soft liner. Takes it in for the owl. Now batting the designated hitter, Luke. Now it’s the Mariners DH. Luke 0 for three in this one. And there’s the ball. All tied up here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. And that’s downstairs and outside. [Applause] Next offering is in for a strike. Two one [Applause] on the ground right side. El Tuve handles it, throws to first in time and that quickly two away. Well, there’s a lot riding on that at bat right there. Nice job of the pitcher. Bear down, make the pitch, get the ground ball. Excellent piece of work. Mitch Garver up next for the Mariners. at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. Misses the sweeper. He finds himself in a tough situation early. Just got to try to simplify it. Take a knock the other way if you can. Two down. Nobody on and misses inside. Swing and a miss. And that is that. Nothing doing for the offense that time. Threw eight full and we are tied 4-4. Here’s the third base. Mauricio Dubong three for three with two singles and a double. [Applause] Brash back to work. That one ripped but fouled. [Applause] Not even close there. One and one. [Applause] And a slider misses down and away. Back to back breaking pitches away. You get the feeling as a hitter that the pitcher is afraid of you, that he doesn’t want to challenge you. So, I think the confidence level is raised right here. Close [Applause] one. Doesn’t get the call. Three balls in a strike. Cooper Hmel in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Applause] [Music] Ground ball left side down the line and it’s fouled. [Applause] and a swinging miss and a strike down for the first out here in the ninth. Up next, Cooper Hmel now at the plate. Cooper, though he came out clutch earlier in this ball game and really just needs to take the same approach, think hard right back up the middle. That’s a strike and one. That slider breaking in can be a tricky pitch. If you don’t finish it and have that bite at the end and it stays out over the plate, it can get hit a long way. But that was a good one right there in the air to left center. He’s got it. And there’s two away. [Applause] And now to shortstop, Zack Short. fast for a strike. Two down, nobody on here at the top of the ninth. [Applause] Next offering is fouled back. [Applause] Off the mark there. Now one and two. [Applause] Just misses with that one. Two balls, two strikes. Cut misses. It’s a strike out. Nothing across here this half. Bottom part of the order. 789. Two up in inning number nine and we are tied 4-4. [Applause] They turn things over to the southpaw. Steven Ochard bringing in the lefty with a left-handed hitter coming up to hit. Classic bullpen move right here. So we’ll see how it works out. Oer leading off Dominic Mariners the right fielder 33 years old and he was drafted in the fourth round back in 2012. [Applause] First off and it just misses movement in the bullpen. Josh her preparing to come on if needed. [Applause] Just off the inside edge. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Next pitch is downstairs. Ben Williams in the onex circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. 44 in the ninth. Ground ball right side. It squirts through. showed some really nice patience in that bat to a good count. Just one of those see high base hits through the infield. He just kind of rolled over on it a little bit, but sometimes those can find a hole and get you enough. No outs. Runner at first. Ben Williamson getting ready to hit that clips the corner. [Applause] That’s down and in. A slider missed. Winning run on base at first. No outs. [Applause] Swing and a ground ball and that one gets through into center field. throw comes in and the winning run moves up to second with nobody out. Two consecutive base hits for these guys here. Timing on the swing was good. Able to shoot the ball up the middle. Didn’t square it up as much as he probably would have liked, but that’s a good approach paying off. Winning run in scoring position now. So, a clutch AB could end this one. Puts a bunt down. Bare hand grab to first. It’s there. And that’s a great play. We don’t see this very often anymore. First and second sack bunt down to move it off, but he does a nice job. Executes perfectly. See if they can get a couple of runs across. [Applause] Here’s the Mariners leadoff man, JP Crawford. [Applause] And that drops in for a strike. Definitely a strikeout situation right here. Lots of ways for that go-ahead run to score if the ball’s put in play. Tied at four and that is out of play. He’s falling behind in a huge spot. Boo. Got to do what it takes to come through. Maybe choke up on the bat a little bit. Spread out those feet. Whatever it takes. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Oh, that’s a huge strikeout right there. Big second out. Infield was in. They were playing the fullourt press and he got the swing and miss. Keeps this one tied. This next at bat should be a lot of fun. The odds of wiggling out of this just went up considerably. And now it’s going to be Julio Rodriguez. Yeah, don’t need much damage here. Just a base hit. Likely will score two. There’s the strike at the knees. It’s 0 and one. [Applause] And that one missing low. Winning run at third. Two down. Next offering is outside. It’s a big opportunity right here. But I love the way he’s slowing the game down. He’s shrinking his zone, making sure he gets the pitch that he wants to get. Trying to send this to extra innings. [Applause] And that’s outside. Back door breaking ball just missed right there. And boy, umpire didn’t give him the call. I bet you if he throws it again, hitter knows he’s going to have to swing it. [Applause] Winning run at third. Two down. We’re in the last half of the ninth inning. [Music] Swing and a miss. Struck him out. That’s the third out and we’ll play extra innings in this one. Couple of strikeouts with runners on. Sometimes you got to really bear down and he did just that. nice job of getting out of the jam and out of the inning. Now pitching for So they turn to their closer Andres Munoz. Well, you see the RA very solid and that doesn’t always tell you the whole story, but he’s been really good so far this year. Runner in scoring position, no outs. Paradus digs in now. [Applause] And that one is downstairs. And that is ball one. [Applause] Right through there for a strike. [Applause] Next pitch, a slider that misses outside. Man, oh man, I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. In the air, right field, pretty well struck. This one’s got a chance. Drops in for a hit. Couldn’t run it down. Relay throw. Not in time. That’s a leadoff double. Pretty ugly over going into this game up until that at bat. So, a little sigh of relief there. He hit that ball really well to deep right field right there. Got a pitch to drive and just stayed through it nicely. Didn’t quite have the trajectory to clear the fence, but you’re always happy with an extra base hit. Really important at bat. Coming up now, Cam Smith up next for the Astros. [Applause] Misses inside and it’s one and0 strike right through there. That one in triple digits. [Music] [Applause] And that’s downed away. And that’s in there for a strike. The slider defines the mark. Just a really nice slider down and in there. He wants to get the hitter thinking fast ball. Speed him up and just subtract some velocity and add a little movement. Swings. He misses. Strike him out. He’s really good hitting the baseball the other way. So, credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch. Clearly, he had it full. [Applause] Jose Alt step calling for the intentional walk and that loads up the bases and the force play is now in order. First baseman, Christian. Big spot late in this one. And here’s Christian Walker. [Music] And he blows that one by him at 100. This guy’s usually not one to chase pitches off the plate, but he did there. We’ll see if he can tighten up his zone a little bit. Here comes the one fought off foul. So they’re all loaded up. [Applause] And now one and two. [Applause] Battling here as he fouls it away. [Applause] Got him looking. Two gone now. Here’s the catcher to hit. Victor Keratini number 17, Victor Keratini. [Applause] Tap foul at the plate. [Applause] Oh, one down. They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away. [Applause] Hammers that one. Curling down the line and foul. Oh man, that’s a tough one to swallow. Had the distance, just couldn’t keep it fair. Imagine how great that feels running around the bases when you’ve just hit a granny. He’s got to dig back in, figure out a way. Maybe he can do it again. Two outs. Fights that one away. Still one and two. [Applause] Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. Ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. One runs in. Here’s the throw to the plate. Safe. In comes the run from second. And it’s 64. Well, he was a little off balance. He got the front foot down, but was so great at keeping the hands back and allowed him still to get good wood to this baseball. Big one there as he drives in a couple of runs. Here comes the skipper. And we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Andres Munoz departs. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout. And we’ll be back with a new pitcher. Now pitching forward. New pitcher on now. Number 67. Pretty tight game. So they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. And now Taylor Trmelll [Applause] bottom of the zone and a cold strike. 01’s the count. breaking ball inside and the count even one and one activity in the bullpen. Taylor Sedo the southpaw is throwing and getting that sinker dialed in in there for a strike at the top of the zone. I want to start that load a little bit sooner because of the good vloena [Applause] [Applause] squeezes it and that is back. So, two runs in the inning, two hits, no errors, but two are left stranded. Last chance to even things up. We head to the bottom of inning number 10. It’s the Astros six and the M’s four. Josh her comes on trying to close it out. Coming on to face a righty here and he’s been fantastic against him this year. His numbers 345 do up for the home team. And now for Seattle, Cal Raleigh. [Applause] As a pitcher, you know, the runner on second is ready to push things with this speed. A base hit is probably going to be a big run, so you really have to execute on the mound. Tying run at the plate. Just missed. Two balls, one strike. [Applause] Pitch misses there. Now three and one. Get ready for some action here. Good RBI guy at the plate. Runners in scoring position. Hitters count. the 3-1. This one in the air center field. Trel under it. Brings it in. Grer tags at second and the throws off line. Safe at third. Now back the left fielder Randy Arosa. Now the left fielder, Randy Rosarena. Corner infielders guarding the lines trying to prevent extra bases. Right through there for a strike. [Applause] Foul off down the right side. [Applause] [Applause] in there. Sets him down on strikes and they’re down to their last out. Oh, you got to be ready to swing the bat with a runner in scoring position and two strikes. Just put the ball in place somewhere and you got a chance. Very frustrating for him, I’m sure. See if the next guy can pick him up. So last chance for the Mariners in now is the Mariners DH Luke. [Applause] That one’s in there and it’s all and one. the tying run at the plate. Popped up middle of the diamond short and that is the ball game. Well, this is a big win on the road and going extras into 10. Uh so hard to pull those out, but I think this team did a great job of keeping the crowd out of the ball game late. When you can do that, it kind of calms everything down, keeps the adrenaline of the opposing team down a bit, and you can steal a win and get out of here happy. And this one ends with a final score of six to four. For Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show, thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
