What’s your favorite part of Fourth of July? Did I get a question? No, cuz you’re the first. The fireworks. That’s a good one. How’s your day? My day’s been good. Had good coffee, good food, productive at the house. What do you hope is in the spread line down there? A good sushi spread. What is your favorite activity to do before coming to the field? Farmers market this morning. Yeah, it’s good. Good day. Good cherries right now. I say uh favorite clothing brand. Louis Vuitton. Yeah, Louis Vuitton. Oh, good taste. You got a question for anybody else coming next? Nothing. Nothing? Yeah. What’s your vice from Justin Turner? Mushroom coffee. What? How’s the sunburn feel? It hurts. What made him choose his outfit for today? My guy be Wills set it out for me and said, “This what you’re wearing?” I said, “My dog.” He knew I was coming after. That’s why he asked that. If there’s something that needs to be done around the house, do you call someone to come do it or do you do it yourself? Depends what it is. I try to do it myself. If I can, I’ll make a call. Who has that question? Danby. Let’s go. If you had to have one teammate babysit, who would it be? Nico Horner. Responsible. He’s going to work hard at it. What’s your favorite part of the honestly right now? Come to the field and grab a bunch. We have sushi and pizza and some other stuff. So, Sha might ask him about his hairstyle. I think he’s got some good hair. Might have to get on that train. Cara hair dryer, expensive hair dryer and good treatment, good conditioner and good hair oil every day. Okay, showmanaga. We know that it is impeccable. You you said pizza and sushi. Are are you on board with that one? I think that’s a I mean like eating pizza with sushi. I mean, I will, but I thought before I Are you a big sushi fan? No, I love sushi, but I’m not going to eat pizza with sushi in front of me. I’ll eat sushi. I never crave sushi, though. Do you crave sushi? Like these guys crave W’s? I agree everything. Little spicy tun spicy tuna roll. Yeah. Yeah. What? That’s good. Well, it’s always fun. So, it’s a team building operation right there is what we saw. And these guys always about building. And we know Sha Emmanaga. They call him the throwing philosopher for good reason. Tonight, he’s looking to go out there and stifle the Minnesota Twins. What do you think he needs to do to be at his best this evening? Did Sha get a haircut? No, he just has a pulled up. Nice little crop pony man bun. Okay. I get nervous when that happens. Don’t do that. That’s his whole hair routine. Oil every day. Huh? Remember when we thought he shaved his hair? Yeah, cuz he had it all tucked in underneath the cap. Now he’s just letting it flow. You thought he was going with the swing. I really like when it’s all Sey Suzuki. You and Sea have a half fade. Just got a fresh cut this morning for the show. Yeah, fresh. Fresh. Am I supposed to be talking? What does Shota need to do? He needs to keep the ball down. Last outing against the Guardians. Did give up, He pitched well, but gave up three homers. They were all solo shots. So those are good though. You’re going to give them up. Don’t let them be multiple runs. Well, and and as a pitcher when you talk about like falling behind 3 nothing or something like that, like you know that the Cubs are going to come back at some point. They’re going to put some runs on the board. But yeah, I think just keeping the ball down. Look, this is his third start since coming back from the hamstring issues. Still feeling out, but I think he’s pitched well. Was that a segue talking about the Cubs and their offense? If they’re down three to nothing, what they’re able to do, that’s going to lead us to our Northwestern Medicine art of the lineup presented by Northwestern Medicine, leading the way to better medicine on the road. They’ve been really, really good. So good, in fact, that every single category that we’re listing for your viewing pleasure. They are tops catbird seat, head of the class. That’s right. Runs per game, long balls per contest, batting average, slug, OPS, all the things that will get you some postseason awards, and maybe a commissioner’s trophy. Yeah, absolutely. Like I said, he threw well. I thought he really pound the strike zone. He got guys off balance. He got the strike out when he needed to. He really didn’t get any guys in scoring position and he continued to just throw strikes. I talked about it in the pregame show with that righties. He likes to elevate that fast ball up and in and that’s what he did tonight. Yeah, the Cubs and their ability to get runners on and push them across. We didn’t see that tonight. Maybe a little incorporation of small ball these ball games before we hit the All-Star break. Well, something else that I was looking at Woods Richardson and how effective he was tonight. Normally, he’s not actually as effective against lefties. He has like pretty drastic splits. So to think that I mean against him what that he ended up giving up was it just a couple of hits against him that five innings two hits no runs 61 pitches. So the 61 pitches throws you off cuz when you see a line like that you’d expect him to go a little bit deeper but he goes five innings and at that point it’s a two nothing game. So maybe the Twins are thinking we want to go to our bullpen. But Sha did not pitch poorly. I mean pitch well start. Yes. And I think especially after giving up too early the way he settled in and just kept mixing things up. I mean, this just continues to be showdown. Consistent, reliable, no walks. I noticed that, too. Yeah. So, he didn’t have a lot of strikeouts, right? But he’s not like just giving up free passes. So, yeah. All in all, you got what you needed to out of show. Yeah. And taking a look at Woods Richardson. Sometimes when a quality opponent comes to town, you elevate your game. Is that maybe what you saw today from him? Because the Cubs at last look, one of the best teams in all of baseball. Absolutely. And I think when you get to a certain point, like him being a young guy, too, like he’s going out there showing his stuff and he knows that, hey, my team’s kind of out of this. I have nothing to lose, right? I’m going to ch I’m going to challenge guys. Sometimes when you see young guys, they try to nibble at the corners. They might start walking guys. He didn’t do that tonight. He went after guys and said, “Here’s my best stuff. If you can hit it, you can hit it.” And they Cubs did not put together any runs tonight. Absolutely. Well, we saw some velocity from him as well as Porter Hodgej. However, with Porter Hodgej, it was located in the wrong spot. And that’s going to get us to our lottery fast play of the day presented by the Illinois Lottery. Download the Illinois Lottery app from your phone right now. So you can play some of those fast play games on your device immediately, if not soon. Just like the way that ball got out of the ballpark. Justin Turner, a welcome to the 200 career home run club. This one certainly a special moment. And it’s even better that a Cubs fan was able to snag that souvenir right there. And uh there was a little bartering going on and apparently the exchange has just been made. Hey, what do you want for that ball? This is cool. Okay, I’ll give it to Oh, hold on a second. There’s Justin. I got All right, then the handshake was made. That’s when you know it’s official. Man, he got back there quick. He did. Uh-huh. Just like that. Ushered under the tunnel. Oh, this is cool. Gets some more baseballs. Gets a bat. Justin Turner always a class act. Gets a picture that he’s going to remember for the rest of his life. So, a cool moment, not just for Justin Turner, but for this life. Yeah, that’s cool that it’s a Cubs fan, too, right? I mean, if it was a Minnesota Twins fan, it wouldn’t have been the same, right? That guy’s They would have been trying to juice him for whatever, right? And he he had a Schwarber jersey on, so you you know that he’s a Cubs fan and he’s coming in there like excited to get whatever he can. And like you said, if it if like you said, if it was a Twins guy, he probably would have tried to get a little bit more. Okay. Maybe season tickets. First career hit. Did you have to finagle to get that ball? Do you remember what happened with it? Do you still have that baseball? Yeah, I still have it. Okay. Yeah. What What was the going rate on that one? Yeah. I I don’t remember. I think I maybe just signed a couple things, too. Kind of like that. Maybe a bat and some balls. It was baseball card. Yeah, it was with the White Socks. It was the first homer. So, I got it back. So, pack a big in the office. Yep. Okay. Well, I wasn’t that expensive apparently. Said tip of the cap to red turn two. Hopefully, there’s a few more left in his back pocket, especially this season with the Chicago Cubs. A disappointing one in Minnesota. We’ll continue to recap right here. 8 to1 the Cubs. They fall in game one of the six-game road trip ahead of that Midsummer’s Classic. We’ll continue to let you know more about it right here on Cubs Postgame Live. So, don’t you go anywhere. Yeah, I mean, you know, we didn’t do enough against the starter. I think we made it a little bit too easy for him. Um, you know, you got through five relatively easy, frankly. Um, and we just, you know, I think we swung the right pitches. We just had some, you know, just kind of like just misses and so much kind of okay hit fly balls. Um, but but not enough action. Um, and then yeah, then then we had some, you know, the the eighth inning against a really good reliever, we just we got the first two guys on and he made some really good pitches. So, and and then they they uh tacked on some big runs. With Showdown, what did you feel like was the key for him after those two runs for him? Well, I mean, I thought he just threw a lot of strikes tonight. They were they were super aggressive. Um, I mean, I I don’t know. They felt like they swung at maybe 10 of the first 12 pitches. Um, so this bunch of swinging early. Um, but not nothing. You know, the double was just kind of a pretty good pitch actually. Um, but yeah, he settled in. He threw a bunch of strikes. He had a split finger a whole bunch tonight. Um, and, you know, ends up with six six innings and two runs. Pretty good start. It’s only three starts, but just to see him come off a month plus and yeah, I mean, he’s he’s he’s pitching like Short does and he’s I I don’t think he’s as good as he can be yet. Um but uh but he’s he’s getting people out. Yeah, I mean it wasn’t command. That’s that wasn’t I mean we got to we got to look at that one. We got to dig into that one cuz that um you know we have frankly haven’t seen that with Porter. Um so we got to take a look at that one. Yeah. Yeah. Hope this Sunday. Bush back in his hometown hit the ball hard four times that one off the wall. Just you had to control his emotions before this one. No. No. He you know he had he had a good at bat against Jackson. That was kind of our that was a big spot and he hit a ball hard just unfortunately hit it right at him. Well, there’s Craig and his assessment of show Imanaga and his outing this evening and we saw 83 pitches. 61 of those went for strikes and you and I before we actually rolled out here swing we talked about the fact he was able to locate those strikes inside of the zone. But did he throw too many strikes tonight? I think he might have and I think that’s why and that’s why he induced a lot of weak fly balls. But if you take a look at what he did tonight and how it started off, you know, he made some good pitches that weren’t really that bad to start off. You see the first one against Bucks was kind of a change up down and away that Bucks just went down and got. That’s not a bad qu pitch in the left quadrant of the strike zone right there. So it started off with a double double and then you have Jefferson that fast ball down gets another double to left field. So kind of started off a little rocky there for Shota really throwing too many strikes like you said Cole with 61 out of 83 and then the sack fly here but that was really the only damage that was induced right there. I said he needed to keep the ball down but what did he do good tonight? He elevated the fast ball. There was a couple ones that he looked like that maybe they got it. But 12 fly ball outs. He’s not really a ground ball pitcher so didn’t really need, you know, didn’t get a lot of guys on base where he needed to get the double play ball. You see this one right here by Vasquez that looked like he got it, but Hap held him out and made a good play and uh really happy about that one. But you look at what he was able to do tonight. You see the first inning, you know, two runs the latter of the second through the six, zero runs. So two hits. We made a good point. It was zero base on balls as well. So going after guys, throwing first pitch strikes, going out there and being able, this is what you want to get out of Shoto when you have him pitch. And I think when you go out there, he had threw up another quality start. It’s just usually the Cubs come back and score a lot of runs and they didn’t end up doing that tonight. Without a doubt, at least 23 batters face, 16 of them saw a first pitch strike. Ashota Imanaga, he’s always the picture of efficiency. Today, after he got banged around a little bit, his ability to settle in, that’s what you want to see as the season continues to progress. Yeah. And like Craig Council was saying, we probably haven’t even seen the best of show because we know just how good he can be. That could be scary for the opposition. Yeah. And great for the Cubs. And to your point about throwing strikes, 73 and a half% strike rate. And so that’s the highest of the year for him so far. So yeah, he was throwing strikes in that first inning. He was also hit the hardest on the night, 98 the average exit velocity, 98 mph. And so when he was throwing that four seamer in the first, I wonder by getting knocked around and giving up a couple runs, did that maybe change the approach later? But that’s where he settled in. So maybe throwing more of that splitter as Craig Council was highlighting too and maybe not relying so much on the fast ball because that is what got hit early. But that’s what makes Sha so good, his ability to adjust and not just inning to inning, but even in the at bat. And so that’s what he did tonight. And he throws that splitfinger fastball more than any other qualified left-handed starter in all of Major League Baseball. So that’s a pitch he has in his back pocket. And he likes to lean into a swing. I was just going to say with the split finger, too, it’s he throws it. Look, he doesn’t overpower guys. So he’s throwing 91 92, but with the discrepancy of how it translates to his splitty, he throws that one at like 81 82. So it’s like that 10 mph difference that he has on that. So you can’t really go up there sitting on one pitch or the other and down and away to righties is really a good pitch for him cuz he doesn’t really throw it down and into lefties. He throws the sweeper going the other way. But yeah, I mean it’s going to be interesting to see if with him being in the strike zone and commanding both sides of the plate if he can throw that splitter more for strikes to induce wing contact because I think it in certain situations you can’t always rely on getting the fly ball. You need to get that ground ball out without a doubt. And when he throws that split piece, it looks like the bottom was knocked out of that pitch. And the opposition, they’ll tell you that just by looking at some of the swings that are futile at best. Take a look at Showd’s numbers tonight. Six innings pitched, zero free passes, and just two earned runs. So, here he is. He and Edwin letting us know about this evening’s run. [Music] Yeah, I haven’t really thought of that before now or in the past. Really just trying to do what I can at that moment and do my best. What when you were seeing how aggressive the Twins sitters were to start the game, what kind of adjustment did you have to make after that? Yeah. Okay. So, in the first inning, um I think my fast ball, um they, you know, it was going into the zone too much or I was pulling down on it. So, I was just made an adjustment with that. Uh moving on the second inning. How challenging has it been this season with losing steel, you missing time, Jameson now missing time. How challenging has it been for the rotation to kind of get through this? And how confident are you that you can continue to have guys step up? Fore! Foreign! Foreign! Um, I think it was a case when I was hurt where, you know, everybody else in the rotation stepped up and, you know, they pitched as well as they can. So, I think right now, you know, what I’m focused on is doing my best to help the team win. And I think every individual on the rotation, you know, I think they have the capacity to, you know, if they reach their potential, I think we’ll be the one of the top rotations. I think all we really have to do is just keep doing our best and picking up picking each other up. No one wants to get hurt, but after that injury, do you feel like this second half we’re going to have really nice rhythm and be able to carry it through potentially into a playoff type? [Music] So his Yeah. So since you know in the first half I missed some time I think that energy I you know I can use to bring that into the second half and I think you know doing my best in second half and you know building my rhythm I think that’s going to be my goal. forchech. Fore! Fore!chch! Fore! Foreign! Foreign! forchech.
