鈴木誠也とPCA、ジョークや敬意に満ちた兄弟インタビュー【英語・日本語字幕】
[Music] explain how this relationship, this brotherhood with somebody who doesn’t have a English speaking background, how did it all come together? Um, I mean, just like just like a lot of the other the other vets uh who guys who’ve been around the game for a long time like Seiya Seiya is is one of those people to me. Um, so I mean it’s nice. I get to build a relationship with him and Fumi, uh, who’s not sitting here, but, uh, Fumi is his trainer, jack of all trades, and, um, we just spend so much time together, play the same position, and, um, we just got to know each other very well over the last couple years. Does he always smile whenever he’s around? He seems to have a nice big smile on his face. Yes. [Music] Yeah, Pete has a cute personality. Cute. Cute personality. And you know, we don’t might not speak the same language, but when you know, Pete tries to speak to me, you know, he talks slow and he’s very easy to understand. So, um, I think he’s he’s a good kid. What What was it about him that allowed you to know this was safe territory? Like that guy is a lot like me. There is no uh necessary language for certain emotions. Um, he’s always he’s always just very like he seems very peaceful as he goes about his day. Um, and I think that he has this very youthful side to him where um, I’ I’ve definitely tried emulating or stealing and taking like how he approaches the the actual game of baseball itself. Um, and you know, like getting a joke through through Fumi translating is is just as funny usually as uh uh if he says something in English that that that makes me laugh. But um he’s just Does he do that? Absolutely. I mean, he he’s full of stuff and he’s he’s full of full of crap sometimes, too. Like it’s it’s just uh he’s he’s so unique. He’s so unique and he is so he is so just naturally funny. Um, so I just I’ve loved I’ve loved it. Saya, has he brought out the personality that you had in Japan? Has he helped bring that out here? A lot of people around you say that’s who we knew in Japan. Like very fun, gregarious guy. [Music] Yeah, I would say so. Uh, you know, I’m not the I’m not a loud person. Um, but I’m pretty quiet. But I think, you know, with Pete and just talking to him, I think that like kind of hidden humor or like just my hidden personality was able to come out. But I think in reality, I think I’m pretty funny. He thinks he’s he thinks he’s pretty funny. What What’s the funniest thing he’s ever said to him? What’s What makes him laugh that he does? I can’t say that. You can’t say go ahead. There’s there’s a lot that probably can’t be said on camera, but that’s just the that is the beauty of Is cursing a universal language? I mean, hell yeah. Yeah. He got that. Pete sometimes is demonstrative on the field. He’ll smash a helmet. He’ll th He doesn’t do that very often. When will he start to emulate that behavior? foreign. Yeah. No, I had I had a time when I was younger where I was kind of similar to Pete. Uh, and I think, you know, just showing your emotions on the field. I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing. I think that’s actually a good thing. Uh, he might go overboard sometimes, but I think it’s a good thing. You go overboard. Yeah. Yeah. But but the the best part of that is like he’s very he’s very honest in in how he sees that and he has shared his you know his past experiences with dealing with with you know failure and handling his emotions and um I think it makes me feel a little bit better about you know my trajectory and and the search to kind of cool cool it off sometimes. Does he feel like a big brother to you? I mean I can see the way he interacts with you. You can feel it. Yeah. Um, he is he’s liked bringing up the big little brother roles. Uh, and yes, I mean I think that there’s just a like a a nice comfort that I and ease that I feel just being around say your advice he’s given you. I mean what what are some of the more mature things he has said to you to help you with your life? I think he he he reminds me that this is fun very regularly. Um, and he’s never he’s never questioning why I tend to react in certain ways. And a lot of people in the clubhouse also take take a step back and, you know, give themselves time to understand where I’m coming from. Um, and then as that relationship grows, you know, it’s easier to to be honest about about things. But I think the the best part about how he chooses to handle that is is just reminding me that that this should be fun and that it’s the next his his thing is is next to bat. next event. Saya, what what’s the most impressive part of his game? What do you respect? What do you like about his game? Right. Yeah, I would say, you know, obviously the play on the field. I think everybody sees that, the fans see that, and that’s impressive. But I think for me what I find impressive and what I respect a lot about Pete is the what he does behind the scenes and how he handles everything. And you know for me it’s just watching a young player like that handle it with that much professionalism. I think that’s something I respect and I think that’s one something I let up about him. What about his speed? I’m faster. Wait, what? You’re faster than him? Me fast. He’s fast. He’s fast. very fast. I can’t see your bases. But you’re faster. No, he’s not. We have a board where it says our top times. He’s not faster. But he is so sneaky fast. And the way he actually runs is is very it’s very impressive. And he’s he’s one of the more athletic people I think in the league that doesn’t that that that doesn’t get talked about enough, I think. All right. What about this this sort of intragame competition? You homer, he homers it. I think it’s happened six times. Nine times you guys have each had multiple hits in games. In all nine of those, you’ve won the game. So, let’s talk about if he does something, then you want to do it. And if he does something, you Is that like a real thing? I think it’s it’s turned into a real thing. We started talking about it once someone brought it up and it that came to light. And I I we definitely had our little moments of being like, “All right, man. You just did it. Now I’m going to You communicate that to him?” Absolutely. Yeah. I was I’ll just go up to him. I’ll I’ll say, “All right, now my turn or your turn, whatever it is through the interpreter or you do you just do this.” Is that how that works? So, yeah, in the beginning, like I didn’t put much thought into it because I never really thought about it. But then as more people around me um started saying that, now it’s like, okay, if I hit a homer it’s your turn next. If he hits a homer, then it’s my turn next. Is it Is it like having a little brother to you? Is it like that? Do you have any brothers or sisters? He’s he’s younger than my younger sister. So Okay. And I think he did he call you a little kid in the beginning of this. Yeah. Yeah. I mean I I am a good bit younger than a lot of people on the team. And uh I think he just ends up bringing out like some of the some of the some of the more some of the more immature moments in me behind the scenes. I think in a 162 game season, you need some immature moments, right? You better have fun. Yeah, I think so. I mean, you know, it’s a really long season. Obviously, you know, there’s moments you want to be serious, but there’s also moments, you know, you want to have fun, relax, you know, just make it a little bit lighter. So, I think, yeah, very important. Lastly, do do you share moments off the field? Do you go out to dinner together? Do you share some of the sort of ways you were all brought up, traditions, etc.? Um, us two, not yet. Uh, S’s got two little boys at home, so he’s uh more often than not, he’s on daddy duty. Um, but I I think uh I definitely see plenty of dinners in our future, but um I’ve made it clear to everybody with the kids on the team that I’m I’m fine babysitting whenever they need, and I love his his little guys so much. So maybe my kids when they see uh Pete on TV, they’ll just say Pete. Pete. So I think, you know, they love Pete. Yeah. You have a unique ability to relate to kids. You You know that, right? I’ve been told. Yeah. I just I I love it. It’s I think it’s the coolest thing ever that guys are at the point in their career where they can show their kids what, you know, what dad does on a on a daily basis. which I think that is the coolest thing ever. So, um yeah, I mean I it’s been easier as I’ve spent more time around him. Do you see him babysitting for your children someday? [Music] Yeah, I think you know, you know, if his performance goes down and his uh you know, salary goes down, I think I want to pay him a little bit just to help him out. just help put food on the table. Yeah, I’m still on league minimum, man. And lastly, what what do you think about the hoodie when it’s 97° outside? Crazy. Crazy. Crazy. Yeah. I love your boat. Thank you. Thank you guys very much. Good to see you. You, too. [Music]
