Davey Martinez after a big loss to the Red Sox
We know Mitch Mitchell is still a young very young pitcher. Um again, you know, once things start unraveling, something happens, he’s got to be able to control the heartbeat and slow things down a little bit. Um you know, he hasn’t done it. When he gets out of that first and second inning, he usually, you know, figures it out and and gets through the game. You know, once we get out of that inning, you know, we talked to him, settled him down. Um he threw up zeros and, you know, what he did after that was really impressive. I mean, uh, six innings at 90 95 pitches. Um, really saved the whole bullpen. I mean, he really did. But that’s what we need from him from from the start of the game. It’s not it’s not the fact that he he can do it because we’ve seen him do it. I mean, he’s coming off two pretty good outings before that. He just has to learn how to Hey, I’m going to take a deep breath here and and understand that the only thing I need to do right now is make a good pitch, get this hitter out, and then go from there. I think he gets to the point where he wants to get every hit out out with one pitch, you know? So, and that, you know, as we all know, that can’t happen. Just focus on that one pitch, get that hitter out, and then move on to the next one. A lot of forcing fast balls are right over the heart of the plate. How do you get him to correct that in those moments where things are kind of getting? Well, here here’s again, here’s here’s what, you know, we’re talking about. When things start unraveling, he just starts pumping and trying to get ahead with his fast ball. In the three innings that he went, he threw five fast balls and threw up zeros. Pitchability, right? He’s got that. I mean, we I’ve seen it time and time again. He’s just got to stick with the pitch ability, you know, knowing understand and knowing how to get hitters out. You know, he he knows how he knows, you know, they know the weaknesses of hitters. He knows his strengths. He knows he’s got a good, you know, good breaking ball. He knows he’s got a good splitter. Um, use it, you know, use it, get them off the fast ball, then then you can start throwing your fast ball when you need it. Um, and he did that really well after he settled down. He had largely cut out his splitter and slider over the last month or so. Do you think when he gets in a spot like he did in the third, he has trouble finding it because he hasn’t thrown it that much or is it something else happening? I I think he just relies on his fast ball. You know, his fast ball’s sneaky good, you know, um when he locates it, right? But I think he relies on it too much. So that’s when you got to step take a step back, say, “Okay, I got to make good pitches, understand what I’m what I’m trying how to how to get hitters out and focus on how I could get him out.” Um but like I said, when he does that, you saw what he did the rest of the game. I mean, he was efficient. Um, he suits the ball really, really well.
