🔴LIVE 🔴Los Angeles Dodgers vs San Diego Padres / June 19/ Mlb Envivo/MLB THE SHOW 25

in this one number 80 base runners are tough to come by with him out there Chris well he brings into this one an excellent strikeout to walk ratio on the season and when you consider the amount of swings and misses that he gets and the fact that he’s not issuing free passes that’s going to make him more economical in his pitch count allow him to move into the middle and deeper part of ball games so we’ll see if that remains true in this one out to center kim settles under this one pulls it in and there’s one away let’s take a look at the Padres’s lineup we could be in for a power showcase today with the wind blowing out a lot of lift and separate chris uh we know hitters are in this era definitely trying to hit the ball in the air regardless of the conditions but I think even a little more so there’s margin for error if you can get the ball up in the air so you know you’ll see at times I’m sure with two strikes what looks like a half swing that can get out of the ballpark with a hitter who’s got decent pop swing and a high-fly ball right field kim puts it away for the out batty third baseman Manny and now it’s Manny Machado what a season it’s been for him he has supplied a lot of power and that average this guy is an elite level hitter especially considering contact and just the ability to hit for average what you really like though stays in against those righties and that’s not so easy as a right-handed batter to first they don’t come any quicker three pitches for three outs inning over middle of the first no score back here at Dodger Stadium and our starting pitcher here today Dylan Cease well no doubt about it he’s going to have to put together some consistently good performances in order to bring that erra down now he’s got good stuff he’s just got to be able to have confidence trust it and really go after hitters not nibble trust that his stuff can have late life in miss barrels of bats and up to the plate is Will Smith heading down the line got it covered plenty of distance there and there’s one down time now for Dave Roberts lineup for the Los Angeles Dodgers one guy leading the way offensively for this club right now hung Kim you know Boog he really makes the most out of his skill sets leading the team in steals and on base percentage and you know you got sometimes a guy that can run really well but he doesn’t get on base enough to utilize that potential as soon as this guy gets on first he’s thinking about second and then third he’s got the wheels to make that kind of stuff happen and really disrupt the ball game i love watching guys like him who just make stuff happen in the lineup mookie Betts at the plate now that’s ball one and there’s a foul ball that misses the zone and it’s two and one two balls one strike on the ground to third and that’s a fair ball [Applause] there’s something about pulling one down the line and shooting it through the infield it’s just so satisfying as a hitter it’s just fun turning on a pitch like he did right there runner on at first with one gone and here’s Freddy Freeman just missed ce measures 6’2 in 29 years old and he was a sixthround draft pick back in 2014 fouled off left side man at first one away and there’s the strike gets a piece and stays alive it’s a tough pitch but in terms of the best pitch you’re going to get to hit in the at bat that fast ball was down enough where you’re going to catch up to one that’s the one when she elevates guys aren’t touched it next offering upstairs betts over at first with one away and ball four two aboard a great back and forth in that at bat he had to lay off some really close pitches and somehow he found a way to keep the bat on his shoulder right there i’ll tell you right now I couldn’t have done it first and second one out and now Tay Oscar Hernandez check swing and he went and it’s all and one one out runners at first and second [Applause] and that’s ripped for a base hit flying around third is Betts he will score and they take the lead it’s an RBI single one- nothing well there you go the RBI machine another clutch run scoring at back yeah he’s been so good in these situations call it clutch if you want but his resume speaks for itself maxy at the dish seems like he’s making contact with everything lately batting over 300 so far this month first pitch doesn’t find the zone at this point the clean inning is over got to settle in focus on the hitter and get out of it with minimal damage [Applause] the one fast ball for a strike cold night tonight Boo and that’s a pretty firm fast right there i tell you what memories of getting jammed they creeping into my mind right now [Applause] and that one got a piece of him here’s the left fielder Andy Pahes golden opportunity right here [Applause] and that’s outside and that’s ball one could use a ground ball here something in the infield runner at first base get two get out of this hitter’s got some good opposite field power what I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner swung on belted that gets over the fence so it’s an automatic double as two runs score the play well this tends to happen more often in this park than others and that short fence is just so inviting for hitters you see a lot of balls bounce over for an automatic double when no one can run it down so two in scoring position with one out tommy Edmond at the plate ripped on the ground to second in plenty of time to first and they get Edmond for the out so two down now and here is Kim well at this pace he’s not going to be in this game for very long but he’s got to find a way to shake it off keep it isolated to one inning come back out you could throw up a bunch of zeros and save that bullpit well it’s not the inning he was planning on to begin this start but you’ve got to find a way to shake things off and give your team some length and put up some zeros two outs balls outside [Applause] swing and a ball lifted in the air shallow left field that’s a base hit as a run scores and now the catcher comes up to him dalton rushing that pitch gets the corner it’s 0 and one well they’re really running up the pitch count in this first inning lots of confidence from this team that is perhaps the hottest in baseball right now kim off of first with two away yeah that’s fouled off [Music] [Applause] one ball squirts away a little bit not in time but he’s safe so a wild pitch allows the runner to advance well he’s had a hard time getting into a rhythm he’s not been able to repeat his good delivery and that’s why we’re seeing the ball sprayed all over the place that right there is just an example of how tough it’s been for him today man at second bows it off still one and two that wasn’t an easy pitch to hit it’s much easier to do damage against mistakes but that’s not what that pitch was and down on strikes inning over although plenty of damage done but nine batters hit in the inning five come around to score onto the second now from Dodger Stadium it’s the Dodgers five and the Padres’s nothing back here in LA all set for the start of the now the left fielder Gavin Sheets pitch misses there ball one i’m sure he likes the 5-0 lead and the run support but he’s sat around a lot since warming up in the pin and you’d hate to see a guy not have his rhythm to go out there and have a great start swing and a miss and that is strike one betty really sells the change up with that arm action [Music] next offering is in for a strike knocks that one away and will do it again i wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball try to go again with a fast ball slightly elevated he just having a hard time catching up up and in yeah that’s ball two was good pitch there really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge and that’s one of those if you swing at it he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout good job to fight that one off check swing no appeal full countdown swinging a ground ball bets slings to first going up one down batting fifth second baseman jake Croninworth now here’s Jake Croninworth and that is cut on and missed that’s strike one in the on deck circle you really want to use that opportunity to see some pitches and time up the fast ball last thing you want to do is miss a good hitable fast ball early in the count [Music] one down base is empty inside almost got him foul ball still a one and two count one out base is empty and Jake has entered the K zone thought it was a pretty good pitch top of the strike zone we’re seeing more fast balls in that location hitters especially with two strikes have to be ready to pull the trigger it’s Xander Bogarts now bats up with it and it’s a one two three inning padres’s go down quietly still looking at that five nothing deficit and welcome back to the ballpark now it’s the DH Will Smith high in the draft he’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform but at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level and a first pitch fast is in for a strike not sure if he was expecting for the pitcher to come right at him but he got a nice cookie there and just watched it the entire way the other way tatis makes the catch and there’s one gone up next for the Dodgers short stop here’s Betts now one for one with a single and a run scored so far lots of players perform better at home and this batter is no exception might be the crowd or the familiar surroundings but he’s typically better in this environment that one missed [Applause] swing and a miss strike one yeah I don’t think anyone’s got good numbers swinging at pitches in that location the shorts stop takes the ball [Music] next pitch is outside [Applause] [Music] [Applause] ground ball left side and that’s just fouled turns and fires the bats fouled off again and it remains three and two and they’ll do it again [Music] outside and that is ball four that’s a great at bat he saw a lot of pitches and earned a walk what a battle it’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch and I tell you what he earned that walk one gone runner at first and here’s the first baseman Freddy Freeman worked a walk in his first trip to the plate there goes the runner freeman hits it in the air johnson pulls that one down two down now batting right fielder Teay Oscar Hernandez so man aboard next to hit tecar Hernandez singled and scored his first time that one catches the zone that’s strike one when you’re struggling out there on the mound hitters know that there’ll be plenty of opportunities within the at bat to try to get something to hit hard next offering is down low one ball one strike and that’s down and away betts the runner at first with two gone that’s off the mark three and one now up the middle croninworth throws on to first and that is the third out of the inning one left for LA but they hold a five nothing lead onto the third inning so digging in now for San Diego Trenton Brooks pitch misses there ball one you know these Padres’s as you probably noticed haven’t been shy at the plate at all in fact they’ve probably been too aggressive at times i’m specifically talking about the first pitch these guys are swinging more than 80% of the time which is fine if you’re scoring runs but that hasn’t been the case today ready eight catcher Elias Diaz and now it’s Elias Diaz and that is out of play one down base is empty swing and a ball popped up freeman sizing this one up and there are two outs batting ninth centerfielder Bryce Johnson two out space is empty bryce Johnson digs in now ground ball up the middle that’s a base hit so the two out knock extends the inning and sends them back to the top of the order now it’s Fernando Tatiz Jr 0 for one with a fly out to center over to first and he’s saved splits the plate 01’s the count and strike two oh and two [Music] next offering way off the plate two balls two strikes swing and a miss struck him out that’s a third out one left for San Diego it’s 5 nothing bottom of the inning here’s Muny third base Maxy CE back to work that’s a little high and that’s ball one you know these Dodgers doing a good job of putting the ball into play and that makes things more challenging on the defensive side and here’s a stat for you Boo they’re making contact with more than 85% of the pitches that they’re swinging at it’s pretty special stuff not so good if you’re out there on the mound that one’s spoiled and the count now two and one [Music] you’re getting a taste right here of what Max Muny does has a really good eye at the strike zone that one fouled off foul ball and it remains a full count rip towards third slings it across one up one down thought Chris through the early stages he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count he’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game here’s the left fielder Andy Pahes a double and a run scored his first time up way high it is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now doesn’t even matter that much if your starter doesn’t go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their bullpens that one misses and it’s 2 and 0 and that’s outside yeah the 3 0 finds the zone [Music] 3-1 and he couldn’t come up with it pretty easy walk right there last pitch wasn’t even much to think about second base so a man at first and here comes Tommy Edmond first pitch and it just misses pah leads off first with one away next offering in there for a strike and a count one at one that clips a corner not close with that one and it’s two and two where are you two [Applause] hard grounder into the outfield for a knock pz on his way to third the throw in he’s in there couldn’t have timed it up any better than that he wasn’t able to elevate it but he put a great swing on it right on time good balanced approach and just blasted it through the infield manager out of the dugout now and it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound dylan Cease won’t go any further and this is one he’d like to forget back with a new arm after this now pitching for into the game and he’s got a big time breaking ball to contend with hitters going to have to pick it up early if they’re going to have any chance two on one out and at the plate for the Dodgers Hessung Kim RBI single his last time up that one finds the zone strike one [Music] that misses off the outside edge just missed with that back door breaking ball if he gets a swing and miss or called strike 02 count instead it’s 1-1 look for him to go back to that pitch later in this at bat swings through that well in this situation with a runner on first less than two outs some say “Hey get the ground ball double play with two strikes some people say get the strike out.” I think you just execute your pitch make the best pitch you possibly can and let the result be whatever it’s going to be got him looking and he didn’t like the call oh you know that’s got to be very frustrating for this guy he knows the strike zone extremely well and you know what good hitters are not going to compromise is he’ll take that punch out but ultimately stick with his plan and have more success than anything else next up the Dodgers catcher Dalton Rushing delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95 [Music] two on two outs and that’s too high rips that one center field makes the grab and that will end the inning dodgers strand a couple as they are unable to add to their five nothing lead new inning getting started so here’s the Padres’s Doo Luis Arise arise 27 years old and he’s usually a first baseman but today he’s the designated hitter and a pitch and that one sliced fouled ah that hit him and the leadoff man is aboard to start the inning man at first nobody out manny Machado getting ready to hit 0 for one so far some people say that first baseman kind of have the day off regularly because they don’t run around a whole lot but when you think about it they are involved in just about every single play and there’s a lot of stress that gets put on their legs so Edmond to bets at second for one plenty of time at first that’s a double play they made that double play look so easy but it was far from routine that’s the one thing about big leagers they make tough plays look simple two down base is empty gavin Sheets the next up for the Padres’s that’s outside and it’s one and0 just missed well usually a high level of confidence when you’re facing a young pitcher out there on the mound in this situation ahead 200 he’s put himself in a really good spot just missed nasty back door slider there’s really nothing you can do with that if you swing at it so that’s a good take by him two out space is empty top of the zone for a strike three and two now looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located very top of the strike zone middle away swings through it and that’s a strike out [Applause] and we’re back and now the DH Will Smith designated hitter Will Smith inside one and0 [Applause] in there at the knees for a strike swings through that one for strike two one ball two strikes in the air left field down the line sheets makes the grab on the run just pulled off of it a little bit right there that front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed if he does that he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left here’s Muki now now one out to right tatis settles underneath it snags it for the second out now batting the first baseman Freddy Freeman two out space is empty so now it’s Freddy Freeman and there’s the strike ball don’t care a little bit high maybe and a count two and one two down nobody on we’re here in the bottom of the fourth swing and a highf fly ball out towards right field he’s got it and that is out number three offense held in check there we played four it’s the Dodgers five and the Padres’s nothing back here at Dodger Stadium top five John Shami with Chris Singleton and leading it off Jake Croninworth here comes a pitch hammered down the right side but foul you know these Padres’s just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game they’ve been chasing pitches outside the zone all game and it’s led to some frustrating moments they’ve been fooled quite a bit today next offering is in for a strike well struck right field back there he won’t get there that should be extra bases and that’s a leadoff double everything came together for him he got that front foot down and pitch recognition was on point pretty impressive for an 02 count could be a chance here for them to start clawing back into this ball game and a dangerous hitter coming up to hit in Xander Bogarts 0 for one he grounded out in his first at bat pitch is in there go and one hoo over 80% of his first pitches are strikes you’re doing that you could have a really good day out there on the mound [Music] the 01 the short stop takes a ball croninworth stands at second with no outs hit in the air center field kim under it he’s there he’s got it runner tags at second and the throw’s offline safe at third now batting first baseman Trenton Brooks so a man aboard and here is Trenton Brooks fly to center his first time he swings and fouls one off any one 02 is the count swaging a miss the velocity blasted it right past him just overmatched on that fast right there and it wasn’t like he was set up for it by something off speed earlier in the at bat just came right after him with three straight and he had no answer for it here’s Elias Diaz first time up was a pop out that misses and that is ball strikes and another ball two outs and one in scoring position right through there for a strike yeah the 2-1 hammered but fouled look out that ball was smoked man I am so relieved that they have this netting down the line just ensures safety for the fans last thing is a player you want to look up and see a fan get hit throw on to Freeman out number three we head to the bottom of the fifth now it’s the Dodger cleanup hitter Tay Oscar Hernandez oscar Hernandez oh he doesn’t get the call ball one you know these Dodgers really impressing me with the quality of their bats in this one it’s been fun getting a chance to see them go to work it looked to me like they really wanted to get to the starter early get him out of the game before he settles in so I’d say mission accomplished swing and a ground ball and that one gets through into center field man aboard on the leadoff single now batting third base there’s Max max Mercy hey and that misses one and one and there’s a ball two balls one strike in the air right field pretty well struck jatiz going back at the wall can’t make the catch but I think he brought it back fernandez coming home the relay throw that puts a run on the board and picks up an RBI just a cookie down the middle i mean those are the ones you dream about ones in the cage you’re just hoping you get in the ball game right down the middle not a whole lot of velocity right on top of it andy Pah steps to the plate for the Dodgers flying drive and that’s base hit out into center field now a long throw home it’s offline the run comes in and they’re pulling away up by seven now wasting no time he’s two for two now on the night and just a triple and home run away from the cycle seriously we’re starting with this already here’s a switch hitter Tommy Edmund [Applause] and that’s a little bit high and that’s ball one [Applause] fast is outside he’s getting a little frustrated out there on the mound getting hit around a little bit let’s see if he can settle himself down [Applause] tap foul at the plate and that drops in for a strike goodness i think he just took the best pitch he’s going to see in this at bat you don’t get many like that in that location i don’t know if you take that pitch against any pitcher out there on the mount fly ball down the line and that drops foul pahes gets his lead at first with nobody out [Applause] foul ball another 2-2 upcoming stays alive pitcher having a pretty tough time getting that swing and miss third foul ball in a row here’s a 2-2 spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another [Applause] on the ground right side four six he’s out three and they turn the double play oh man what a smooth double play that was a thing of beauty from start to finish hang two down base is empty and now Hess Kim fast ball in for a strike and it’s 0 and one and that one missing inside a sharp slider [Applause] next offering is in for a strike man this guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today short hop liner handled it short bogarts with the throw to first and that’s the third out so two runs three hits no errors and no one left five innings complete it’s the Dodgers seven and the Padres’s nothing back here in LA leading off Bryce Johnson bryce Johnson well every pitcher wants run support and having a lead is nice but it can be challenging for some pitchers i think keeping the mindset to attack instead of trying to be too fine and have too much finesse go after hitters and get quick outs swing to miss only two now it really looks like these hitters have been in between with their timing today good fast ball excellent slider but they’ve not been able to commit to one velocity and stay there fights that one away still one and two and that’s downstairs and outside two balls two strikes and it remains two and two and Gary Simmons punches him out that’s a strike out so with one down it’ll bring up Fernando Tatis Jr 0 for two in this one off the plate inside and it’s one and0 base is empty one away and we’re in the top half of the sixth and another ball no strike that one’s spoiled and the countdown two and one ground ball right side and it stays fair around first heading for two and he’s in with a stand up double he was all for that one not much to this one other than just a willingness to go the other way and put the ball in play that’s a team at bat right there nice job of staying back and letting the ball get deep luis Arise stands in he’s 0 for one in for a strike it’s 0 and one line drive kim pulls it in on the run every day during batting practice these outfielders get about 10 minutes of balls in the gaps they practice this and when the game comes they make the play perfectly now Machado up here singing he’s got a history of coming through in big spots i know I like to talk about I’m not sure whether clutch actually exists but you look at the numbers and this guy always seems to deliver in those spots first pitch just misses well I think it’s the ability to assess the situation understanding what the pitcher has what he’s trying to get people out on and then being able to use the entire field there’s the swing and a miss if you’re a guy that can only hit to one field then you’re really not going to be able to come through in clutch situations because pitchers are going to adjust but because he’s able to use the entire field that’s why he’s so successful in these situations when you played did you play with guys that you thought were clutch and sort of what were the attributes you said that’s what he possesses that allows him to come through well we always used to joke you know guys want to eat steak and there were some that just had a knack could understand it all right and there’s the third out that’ll do it for the inning make it six shut out innings for him out there now it’s the Dodgers seven and the Padres’s nothing back here at Chavez Ravine bottom of the six and here’s the catcher dalton rushing pavetta back to work activity in the bullpen for San Diego number 66 getting loose out there also getting ready 01 now swing and a miss and that’s strike two one of the things that Jim Leland used to say when I was broadcasting with the Marlins the longer a plate appearance goes for a batter the more likely it is that something good will happen for the hitter the next offering misses one and two to count curve in the dirt [Applause] pitch misses and the count’s full [Music] lined and that’s a base hit so now back to the top of the order the first move felt like a bit of a guess you have to be right in those spots or things can get away from you awfully quickly will Smith to the plate 0 for three in this one on the ground could be two out of Croninworth now to first and it’s a double play they made that double play look so easy but it was far from routine that’s the one thing about big leaguers they make tough plays look simple and now it’s Mookie Betts he’s kind of an outlier especially when guys are consciously sacrificing contact to deliver power and downstairs yeah his swing is so good it’s in the zone a long time he gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits there’s the strike Singi one of the things that’s interesting is that guys really don’t worry about swing and miss from an offensive standpoint anymore so when you see somebody who contacts the ball like this do you think of that machado throws to first in time inning over dodgers go down quietly but they’re still in control it’s 7 nothing now pitching new pitcher for the Dodgers alex Via gets an opportunity to square off against his former team so I wouldn’t be surprised if he came out a little extra jacked up right here [Applause] here’s Gavin Sheets now left hand back san Diego left fielder Gavin Sheets that’s in there and that is strike one yeah and the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and then either getting them to a place of fatigue or getting into the bullpen perhaps before you get to those higher leverage arms at the back end next pitch is outside remember Mark Katse was a real good defensive outfielder good instincts not great speed that one misses now three in one and I figured you would get caught into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night that is true [Music] swing and a miss went back to the slider and it was a good idea you know Boo you often think of sliders more for that horizontal movement but most of the good ones have both vertical depth and that horizontal movement and that’s what we saw right there good drop on the brake and got him to swing over the top croninworth in the box for the third time today as he takes that one off the plate the Dodgers bullpen with some action number 70 a lefty looks to be getting himself ready otani getting cranked up as well the Dodgers up big in this one here in the top half of inning number seven [Applause] that one misses and it’s two and one last couple of pitches breaking balls away i think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count swing and a ball lifted in the air right field he just missed it hernandez calls it in and there’s two away now batting shortstop Sander Bogart here ander Bogart style that one close rule to ball one and0 no this manager knows that his players are just trying to do too much everybody needs to just take a deep breath relax and let it naturally happen the lefty the one right through there for a strike [Music] swings through that one out in front that time one ball two strikes oh and he hit him he had two strikes on him and he hit him and now the first baseman Trenton Brooks baseman Trenton Brooks that’s in there and one’s the count oh that’s outside so a foul ball makes it one and two that one missed two strikes bogarts off of first with two away swings through it for the K couldn’t hit the fast ball at the knees padres’s leave one not going their way it’s 7 nothing [Music] now pitching for we’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh adrien Mororrow adrien they need someone to stop the bleeding and keep the score right where it is seems like a tough task today with the way this lineup is swinging it 345 do up for the home team and here’s the first baseman Freddy Freeman freeman and a good fast ball to start him off that’s strike one definitely not a pitch location you’re expecting up there as a hitter when you know the guy’s got a good sinker ball if he can get in that location boy you’ve got to look top to bottom and that’s going to make it very difficult to hit throw not in time it’s an unlikely infield single tough play and a nice backhand stop had to be perfect with the exchange and throw to get the out but it looked like he had to dig in there a little deeper like he was trying to get a split finger grip or something close play but that little extra time on the transfer made all the difference so a man at first here’s Tayscar Hernandez Morahon a lefty who lights up the radar gun 26 years old and he was born in Cuba foul ball nobody out runner at first and a ground ball to first offbalance feed there’s one back to first and that is a double play for me that’s one of the toughest double plays to turn on the infield the first baseman has to get inside create a throwing lane to hit that middle infielder to start the double play and then from there completing it back to first really good job all the way around two out space is empty here comes Max Mudsy that’s in there strike one two down nobody on here the bottom of the seventh just missed fast ball is outside [Applause] gets the call and the count’s even at two [Music] checks his swing appeal down to third and he held up [Music] foul we’ll see another payoff pitch two down doon got it and a nice inning of work there as he sets him down one two three nothing doing for the Dodgers here and they hold a seven nothing lead back here in a blowout which gives us a chance to talk about just about anything bro don’t get me fired all right singing when you played how much of a fashionista were you would you come to the ballpark dressed to the nines no I wouldn’t even on the road trips I was you know pretty average there were some guys that would dial it up and there’d be some outfits where you’re kind of double taking and saying “Where in the world are you going?” But overall I’d say I kept it lowkey foul ball it stays nothing and two oh that’s off the plate [Music] fights it off he’ll see another yeah you see some guys into the fashion nowadays and big on uh on the gram as the kids like to say post their their fits right that’s what that you hope he can maintain it because if he can he’ll be in a nice conversation at the end of the year fernando Tatiz Jr the leadoff batter as he looks at ball one [Music] just missed [Music] next pitch is downstairs that one misses so a lead off walk he did not take the bat off his shoulder the entire bat luis Rise stands in and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike righty delivers and that’s in for a strike oh this guy’s so comfortable hitting with two strikes even a good pitch early in the at bat if he’s not ready to pull the trigger he’s not worried if he gets to an 02 count just outside and a count one and two really good take especially with two strikes [Applause] that one the other way and lines out to third third base as we take a look at the Padres’s lineup and Chris this group has been struggling to put up runs lately well they haven’t been on base a ton and even when they are they haven’t been hitting very well with runners on base so they need a player or two to really step up have some quality at bats hit according to the situation and sort of break out of this i think if they do the rest of this lineup will follow manny Machado in the box here lets that one go for a ball that was a good pitch there really had some run and finished little up and in just on the edge and oh now this one gets away at the plate and now a man into scoring position this is something that’ll happen to him from time to time behind the dish the defense is a part of his game he’s trying to improve but right there just couldn’t squeeze it and it cost him there’s a 1-1 big swing and a miss clearly was sitting on a fast right there and just ended up out in front of the slider hey you can’t falter for his commitment now he’s just going to have to battle with two strikes and it’s fouled off they’ll do it again [Applause] swing and a miss struck him out left fieldielder so the go-ahehead run in scoring position gavin Sheets now at the plate and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter swings through that one tatis at second with two down that’s off the inside corner and the count one and two outside that’s a ball that one missing inside jake Croninworth in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here man on second two down fouled off again and it remains three and two left field and that is that one left for San Diego the Dodgers coming up and we are scoreless you’re watching Major League Baseball on the show back here at Dodger Stadium and pitching in this game Dylan Cease and Chris pitching on the road has not been particularly kind to him yeah and you don’t want to be too quick to say that he can’t pitch on the road sometimes you know it’s just a matter of luck it’s not having a feel difference between the bullpin mound to the mound out there on the playing field don’t know what it is but I know this he’s got good enough stuff to overcome and get it done on the road as well as at home so we’ll see what he’s able to do in this one will Smith leading things off and takes a strike [Applause] to third throws to first and a quick out number one time to check out the Dodgers lineup a guy who’s been huge for them over the last month plus will Smith Boo he’s really been showing off the pop in this series so far two homers and you know he’d love to add on with another shot today i’m interested to see how they approach him here’s Mookie to hit chris baseball today so many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers but this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out first offering misses badly for ball one yeah his swing is so good it’s in the zone a long time he gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits swing and a popup cronin work and puts the squeeze on that one and there’s two down hey man four pitches two outs that is an excellent base basement Freddy two down base is empty here is Freddy Freeman when you look at the elite teams in a game right now there is going to be the slug no question about it but the really good offensive teams combined slug with more contact with less swing and miss two out space is empty yeah and the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and well looked at the fast ball for strike three there to end the inning dodgers down in order scoreless after one second inning set to go stepping in for San Diego Jakeworth one of the things that Jim Leland used to say when I was broadcasting with the Marlins the longer a plate appearance goes for a batter the more likely it is that something good will happen for the hitter [Music] up the middle and a base hit right there just kind of sliced that one into center batting six shortstop Xander Bogarts and here is Xander Bogarts good defender he’s been inconsistent offensively check swing he went too far and it’s a strike yeah and I figured you would get caught into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night that is true bogarts getting to start at shortstop 32 years old and he was born in Aruba swang and a miss missed with a change up now one and two [Applause] and a foul ball he stays alive oh that pitch is out second inning here no score that’s foul off to the right side keeps the AB going that wasn’t an easy pitch to hit it’s much easier to do damage against mistakes but that’s not what that pitch was still two and two after the foul ball i wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball try to go again with a fast ball slightly elevated he just having a hard time catching up swings and misses he battled for a long time but it finishes with a strike out you can’t be mad at yourself after an at like that one so digging in Trenton Brooks good power not great in the OB department right down to shoot 0 and one croninworth the runner at first with one gone in the inning this one popped up foul ground first base side freeman makes the grab and there’s two got the pitch that he wanted just a little bit quick front shoulder open side collapsed a little bit and the launch angle not where he needed it to be elias Diaz the next up for the Padres’s pickoff throw kenworth dives back in fast ball for a strike and it’s 0 and one one’s the count just missed two gone but the go ahead run is at first here in the top of the second swag a popup foul out of play off to the right side that’ll find the stands two2 the count [Applause] in the air left field pahes under it he makes the grab and that’ll do it padres’s leave one we’ll go to the bottom of the second no score bottom half of inning number two now it’s the right fielder T Oscar Hernandez oscar Hernandez ce back to work and that’s in for a strike and that one misses up and in and that is ball one patrick Johnson behind the plate patty Johnson to Sunboo but I’d ask permission first before I called him that does a pretty good job back there occasionally we’ll see a couple of sideways looks from players but that kind of comes with the territory right down in the dirt swing and a miss one ball two strikes fouls it off still one and two in the air right field tatis under this one and out number one on the grad batting fifth third baseman Max digs in first off and it just misses that’s a good miss off the inside part of the plate you’d much rather miss there than out over the plate where this guy can do some real damage yeah the slider misses down and away one out base is empty and a foul ball makes the count two and one some real good life going through the zone on that one and there’s a ball [Applause] muny hits a highf fly ball right field that’s back there makes a leap and grab for the owl what an outstanding effort going all the way back to the point track and leaving his feet to bring that one in it’s so tough to jump on the run like that and time it perfectly so that was awesome so up next Andy Pahes he’s been on fire at the dish lately can make it a fivegame hitting streak with a knock in this one slashed foul down the right side that’ll hook off into the seats next pitch is outside this one in the air croninworth sizes this one up squeezes it and that ends the inning dodgers go down quietly we’ll move to the third with no score and welcome back to the ballpark top half of the third inning so digging in now for San Diego rice Johnson way outside and it’s one and0 that’s a little bit low two balls no strikes that one’s spoiled and the count now two and one and a foul ball 2-2 now battling here as he fouls it away [Music] [Applause] next offering way upstairs now to short bets zips it across lead off hitter gone in the third now batting right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr back to the top of the lineup and the batter will be Fernando Tatis Jr walked his first time foul ball there tatis is so athletic he probably could have carved out a career in other sports if he wanted but he grew up in a baseball family with baseball in his blood next offering is downstairs top of the third no score next offering is in for a strike one ball two strikes on the ground and foul ball looked like you got a little excited on that fast ball got to think to yourself you want to stay up the middle that way if you’re a little bit early you hit it out of the ballpark you’re a little late opposite field not tatis waits swings through that and it’s a strike out and he’s registered three Ks in this one came inside with that two strike fast nicely and just bunched him up on the inside part of the plate couldn’t get around on it and catch it out front many times if you do it’s a foul ball and you know a lot of pitchers they really don’t like working inside with two strikes because they do not want to hit that batter and when they’ve got him up against the ropes got to figure out a way to put them away did a nice job right there arise stands in now and watches strike one in this situation as the number two hitter two out nobody on you want to be a table setter work the at bat get deep whatever it takes get on first base cut on and lifted in the air no trouble here puts it away for the out and that is that home half of the third coming up no score back here at Chavez Ravine and now it’s the switch hitting second baseman Tommy Edmond tommy Edmond that pitch in for a strike it’s 0 and one had a breaking ball misses outside the one-1 is fouled off popped up to the left into foul ground diaz makes the grab and there’s one down bill that was a pitch you got to crush unbelievable that he missed it right there i’m telling you he is going to be frustrated with himself until his next at bat hung Kim the next to hit fought off foul the 01 and that’s how they get their first base runner of the game now the catcher up to hit dalton rushing this one smashed down the right field line tatis pulls it down two down now batting designated hitter Will the batter now will be Will Smith grounded out his first time up i love this part of the game does he really want to try and steal second against this catcher i know he’s fast but it’s pretty risky ce throws to first kim back in on a dive that one hammered but pulled foul now if he’s going to steal second you want him to go early in the count that way he’s not a distraction to the hitter at the plate go ahead and get it out of the way so the hitter can focus on the pitch and that one sliced foul foul ball still 0 and two [Music] swing and a ball drilled in the air towards right center field tatis makes the grab and that’s the inning so the Dodgers leave one still no score start of the fourth now Manny Machado he’s a guy that covers both sides of the plate about as well as anyone in the sport how difficult is that to do oh just look at the back of my bubblegum card you’ll see how hard it is these guys are great man they have the ability to look out there but also to be able to turn on the inside pitch those that can really sharpen things on the outer half those are the ones that become elite just missed you know these Padres’s as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate so many of their outs have come from weak contact on pitches they’re chasing outside of the strike zone you can’t do much of anything with those locations and that’s been true again today pah makes the grab and there’s one down and as a pitcher when the hitters are swinging at everything you feel no need to challenge inside the zone you just keep working the corners and expanding that strike zone and beyond and they just keep eating right out of your hand she in the box now no balls in a strike fourth inning underway hey no score next one misses and it’s one and one we haven’t seen a break in the weather and the umpires might be forced to make a decision soon yeah I think so Boo i mean everyone looking and wondering when they’re going to stop play it definitely feels close and he takes it himself for the out now batting second baseman Jake Croninworth next for the Padres’s Jake Croninworth one for one with a single so far and there’s the strike this guy’s usually not one to chase pitches off the plate but he did there we’ll see if he can tighten up his zone a little bit two down nobody on top half of inning number four that one pushed foul out of play off to the left 0 and2 now knocks that one away and we’ll do it again gets a piece there we’ll do it again swings and misses struck him out nothing doing there for the Friars and we’re still knotted at zero back here in LA bottom four here’s the shortstop at the plate mookie bets inside just missed [Applause] and that’s in there at the knees and this guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today and a swing and a miss there one ball two strike pitch in the dirt two and two two strike [Applause] headed towards the corner tatis really on his horse for it stretches out and hauls it in got to love the over the shoulder catch i tell you what those are really fun to make freeman freddy Freeman up to the dish upstairs [Music] [Applause] that one pulled foul and misses inside [Applause] comes up empty that’s strike two instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended tied him up a little bit slightly up slightly in swinging a miss that one in the dirt got him two gone after the strikeout now batting right fielder here’s Tioskar Hernandez fly to right his first time and that’s a strike well he’s been incredibly efficient in this one first pitch strike percentage over 70% that’s well above league average and that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up until this point and a pop off right side foul territory makes the grab and that’s the inning nothing doing for the Dodgers here and we are still scoreless ready now for the fifth inning and the batter will be the shortstop Xander Bogarts that clips the corner you know these Padres’s showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one they haven’t produced a run yet but the pitch count for the starter is starting to climb so they’re hoping that starts to pay off soon the shorts stop takes the ball and I think they’re in a good spot thanks to their pitching but no one would be shocked if this offense strings something together to take the lead that one down the line muny sends it to first and the lead offense set down in their half of the fifth so digging in Trenton Brooks popped out in foul ground first time through brooks in his rookie season 29 years old he joined the team as a free agent and a weak ground ball to the left side and that’s just foul one down base is empty pitch misses and one and one [Music] line drive it’s never fun going back to the dugout after hitting a line drive that finds a glove but you will get some high fives you know when you make great contact you feel like you’ve done everything right but in this game of baseball not everything is in your control here’s a catcher to hit elias Diaz and that one is downstairs and that’s ball one swing and a miss as he was out front that time slice down the right side outside low two balls two strikes the count two strikes all tied up and we’re in the top of the fifth fast ball is outside gets under it and pops it up has a beat on it makes the play and it’s out number three padres’s down in order halfway through this one still no score and we’re back ready to go for the last half of the inning and now it’s Maxie maxy Ce back to work swing and a pop off in foul ground machado sizing this one up has room and he makes the catch now batting left fielder Andy Pah so up next Andy Pahes he’s 0 for one that one in there across the letters cold night like tonight last thing you want to do as a hitter is get jammed or even off the end trying to find that sweet spot on the bat tell you what you’re going to be trying to catch things out front so off speed pitches may be a good complent to that fast ball that’s off the mark and it’s one and two the guy at the plate could recognize Slider out of the hand didn’t stay in the tunnel very long in terms of depth and perception he knew right away it was an off speed pitch and now two and two the Dodgers hitless so far in the game misses off the play ball three [Applause] spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another swings and hits one in the air out towards right field tatis hauls it in for the out and there’s two away now batting second base tommy Edmond at the plate goal for one popped down foul to the catcher his first time off and there’s the strike oh and one quickly in an O2 hole you’re going to have to give something up here in terms of power if you want to put the ball in play with any authority just misses with that one puts it in the air out towards left center sheets on his way over makes the catch in and over sixth inning coming up still nothing on the scoreboard show Otani will take over here he’s making his second appearance of the season the Dodgers number 17 Show Otani [Applause] stepping in for San Diego bryce Johnson out his first time off that one way inside meanwhile activity in the bullpen kirby Yates preparing to come on if needed visia a left-hander also throwing inside just missed boo he never moved cuz he never had time to but that kind of velocity you’d prefer that pitcher work away next offering is in for a strike just missed it’s a lead off walk and that’s the go-ahead run that could jumpst start an offense that’s really struggled to score in this one want to wake a team up with a free pass fernando Tatis Jr to hit here a strike out and a walk [Applause] just missed well a mistake right here could untie this ball game if you’re the pitcher out there you just want to be a little more cautious that misses and now two and 0 homeplayed umpires trying to tighten things up a little bit that one misses and it’s three and0 luis in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here with a go ahead run at first and we’re the top half of the sixth [Applause] the 3-1 called strike right there with two strikes may see some movement over there at first base trying to stay out of the double play right here stays alive little tardy on that fast ball he’s going to have to get it going a little quicker get that front foot down rounds it up to 96 to record the punch out so here’s the Padres’s D luis for two in this one [Applause] that one is upstairs ball one no strikes and that’s a little bit high out there to center bets is on the move tracks it down for the out and there’s two down that’s a really nice play ranging back into the outfield for that catch we all know those can be a little tricky especially if the wind’s swirling around out there here’s Machado [Applause] and Manny gets a piece johnson off of first with two away check on the runner throw and it gets away the tag and they get him out so a sloppy play there but it ends the inning so no runs no hits no errors and no one left 891 scheduled in the bottom of the sixth and we still have no score [Applause] bottom of the sixth inning here’s the center fielder Hung centerielder Hung that’s a strike one you know these Dodgers they’re not going to be happy with the ad bats they’ve been having so far just one base runner to this point and it’s not exactly early anymore they’ve got players in this lineup capable of sparking something but it just hasn’t happened for him yet next pitch way upstairs went with the sweeper but it misses first pitch strike from the pitcher but then no panic at all by the hitter very patient showing good discipline now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count swung on popped up on the infield diaz under it drops into the glove and there’s one away good hard fast ball up in the zone right there they look really good coming in but so hard to get on top of as a hitter here’s the catcher dalton rushing 0 for one so far in the air left side two away now batting designated hitter Will so the lineup flips over and up to the plate is Will Smith [Applause] that one’s upstairs ball one two down nobody on here in the bottom of the sixth so two balls and no strikes two and out right through there for a strike next pitch in for a strike and the count is two and two and a swing and a miss down on strikes that K is his third of the game so he’s through six no hit innings now no score now pitching so the Dodgers have a new arm on the mound kirby they know that he can get a right-hander out but he’s in position to face a couple of lefties this inning here’s Manny Machado to start it off third base Manny Machado and that misses ball one just missed you get to this part of the order yeah there’s some pop there but more likely there’s some base hits so very important to be patient let the pitcher walk you if he will swing and a fly ball in the air out towards right center field and it’s caught for the out now batting left fielder Gavin Sheets here’s the cleanup hitter for the Padres’s Gavin Sheets first pitch misses uh-oh that got him and the potential winning run is aboard now batting second so digging in now for San Diego Jake Croninworth one for two looks like the weather could actually play a factor in this one it’s coming down pretty good yeah it is and it’s not too bad yet but the field’s not going to be able to hold up if the rain gets any worse than this so keep an eye on the pitcher mound as well and the rest of the infield start to puddle up a little bit [Applause] swing and a miss one away tie game go ahead run stands at first breaking ball inside now one and two [Applause] and that one upstairs on the ground to first could be two to bets at second for one return to first got him double play and that’ll do it no runs no hits no errors midway in inning number seven and it’s time to stretch and we still have no score bottom of the seventh stepping in Betsy this pitcher has done a good job of disrupting the hitter’s timing with a mix of pitches and changing speeds you want to keep that front foot inconsistent for the batter their swings are hesitant and that’s exactly what you want on the mound turns and fires the bats changing speeds has this lineup completely off balance in this one we’ve seen a lot of miss time swings and it’s been a challenge for these hitters to get their rhythm right here’s a rocket out to left sheets falls it in and there’s one away great swing of the bat right there trying to get on is that go ahead run he just wasn’t able to find Freddy Freeman will come up to [Applause] And a foul ball the Dodgers yet to pick up a hit here in there base hit and the bid for history is gone so history wasn’t meant to be in this one but it’s been quite the performance yeah that’s tough for a pitcher to swallow i mean when you’re right on the brink of a no hitter and just pitched a heck of a game just couldn’t make it to the finish line teoscar Hernandez steps to the plate for the Dodgers [Applause] that’s in there strike one [Applause] on the ground to third might be two on a croman work and that’s two poetry in motion there as the second baseman turns the double play nice throw to first and that’s the way to end the inning we go to the eighth stepping in for San Diego xander Bogart off for the Padres’s shortstop xander Bogarts [Applause] yates back to work outside one and0 [Applause] the shorts stop takes a ball the Dodgers bullpen with some action tanner Scott the veteran southpaw is getting ready to come on if needed visia also throwing [Applause] [Applause] and a new high strike to Xander Bogarts popped up freeman under it makes the grab one away boy that was a hanging breaking ball right there i think he tried to do a little bit too much sometimes those eyes can get really big i think his swing broke down as well and that’s what caused him to pop it up and now the first baseman Trenton Brooks [Applause] all in there knee high that’s in for a strike one and one up and in two balls and a strike two balls one strike [Applause] one down base is empty swings through that one for strike two two strike in the air fairly deep to right field pulls it down and he makes the catch two up two down [Applause] elias Diaz the next up for the Padres’s Yates 37 years young and he’s one of the few players in Major League Baseball born in Hawaii and that catches the low inside corner good fast man i mean nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was ground ball Freddy Freeman he takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it now pitching for a new pitcher in the game Jason Adams he’s having a ton of success facing left-handed hitters this season so this seems like a smart move to turn to him with a lefty at the plate here comes Max Muny got to be careful with this guy he’s got power he can untie it with one swing and fires in a fast ball at 95 that was just paint on the first pitch fast ball inside corner and that’s called a strike well he’s gotten ahead with two pitches down in the zone he has plenty of options right here he can go up he can go away he can add velocity he can subtract and ball one one ball two straight [Applause] misses it’s two and two man oh man i don’t know how you take that pitch that’s as close as it gets in the dirt and that’s ball three and ring him up says Patrick Johnson that’s a strike out oh big power guy right there and generating so much bat speed it’s hard to bring that to a halt once you’ve committed they tried to check the swing just couldn’t do it andy Pahz digs in now [Applause] inside ball one activity in the bullpen nick Paveta the veteran right-hander appears to be loosening up [Applause] swing and a miss and the count one and one benny really sells the change up with that arm action next pitch not close up high [Applause] swinging a foul out of play [Music] [Applause] gets a piece and stays alive definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside really think the outer half is open swinging a high-fly ball out there towards left field cheeks settles under it makes the grab for the second out now batting second base tommy Edmond steps to the plate for the Dodgers inside almost got him straighten him up a little bit swinging at a highf fly ball that’s out to center croninworth makes the catch and that’ll do it dodgers down in order it’s the ninth and we are tied now pitching we’re back it’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mouth alex Villa well I got to think he probably has a little extra in the tank facing his former team and there’s not a player in the league that doesn’t get a little extra motivation when he plays against his old squad now it’s the switch hitting outfielder Bryce Johnson he’s 0 for one [Applause] basketball for a strike [Applause] swang and a miss there’s that change up oh he doesn’t get the call going to count one and two that pitch was pretty borderline at the top of the zone and he’s not digging the call out there on the mound clearly pretty frustrated so he’s going to have to collect himself a little fights it off he’ll see another swing and a popup edmond in position makes the grab one down so digging in Fernando Tatiz Jr a walk and a pair of strikeouts here’s a highf fly ball out to center kim in position brings it in two down now batting the designated hitter now the DH for the Padres luis Araz 0 for three in this one you know this is kind of a tough matchup as a left-handed hitter facing a left-handed pitcher what you tell yourself is I want to stay square to the plate try to hit the ball over the shorts stop’s head and the first pitch misses for ball one movement in the bullpen tanner Scott looks to be getting ready for manager Dave Roberts [Applause] missed with a change up now two and 0 two balls no strike swings through that as a hitter you got to learn something from that pitch he clearly wasn’t timed up on the fast ball in a 20 count you have to be ready to do damage that one finds the zone two balls two strikes swing and he breaks his back on to first and the inning is over nothing doing for the offense that time 891 do up in the bottom of inning number nine no score [Applause] back now as they hand the ball to a fresh arm to start the bottom of the ninth jeremiah Estrada left-handed batter at the plate and he’s been excellent in those matchups this year so this seems like a calculated move and now the center fielder has Kim now this guy a player that if he gets on base has the ability to really be aggressive getting around the base paths center field johnson [Applause] he’s got it one away now batting the catcher Dalton rushing alton rushing
