let’s help you make some more of those tough roster decisions and you know sometimes it doesn’t come down to one of these stud players that is struggling sometimes it’s those fringe players who you feel like good enough to pick up but you’re not sure if you need to keep them maybe you sell high while you can so I’m going to try to address that especially some pitchers this week who have been surprisingly good now is actually a surprise to see Clayton Kershaw pitching well it is to me we know the story here i don’t have to talk to you about Kershaw’s resume or anything like that and the long road back to just pitching this year but you know even though I was completely out on him didn’t pick him up anywhere and we talked about him until this point have to acknowledge that this last start we saw maybe a glimmer of vintage Kershaw he went seven scoreless against the Giants and he’s continued to get better each and every start is there something here maybe the bigger question here though is if you have Kershaw because you had stashed him or picked him up recently do you keep him do you keep starting him or is it time to flip well not just because I’m sticking to my guns and being stubborn here and saying I don’t buy into it there are reasons you know statistical reasons to say that maybe he’s not going to keep this up now we knew this was not going to be the same picture of course due to his advanced age and injuries and all the wear and tear in his body well look at this point right now he’s throwing an 89 mile perph fast ball on average that’s in the third percentile in the majors and the strikeout stuff not surprisingly just isn’t there 17% strikeout rate now again that has climbed right his last couple of starts we’ve seen him start to get more swings and misses but it is not sustainable and I also had to remind you the Giants are not exactly the most potent offense you know what Kershaw really is these days and again this is assuming he even just stays healthy the rest of the season which is another huge factor here why I’m saying I’m not keeping him he’s basically Tyler Anderson you know Tyler Anderson talk about him all the time on the two start streamers he’s one of those guys like well he’s making two starts his schedule’s okay i’ll plug him in and just take what I can get from him that’s kind of what Kershaw is these days in a prime matchup sure you can roll them out there but if you expect too much you are going to be disappointed i don’t think anybody expects anything close to prime Clayton Kershaw you know but still I think a lot of times we just expect too much based on the name so let’s say this if you have Kershaw I am going to look to try to entertain trade offers and I will try to sell high now although I might wait until after this next start because it just so happens that his next schedule start should come against Washington now Washington for the season has been kind of middle of the road against left-handed pitchers and just kind of middle of the road you know in general right up and down like a lot of offenses but lately in the month of June right these past couple of weeks they have the lowest team batting average and have scored the fewest runs they are definitely in a funk and Kershaw has got it going on so maybe I wait one more start hopefully he’s at least good if not great again and then I sell high absolutely now it’s going to be trickier when we talk about Matthew Boyd matthew Boyd is 80% rostered across all fantasy leagues because he has been good all season long and while Boyd does not nearly have the track record of a Kershaw you know he’s basically known for being inconsistent and frustrating he’s been just great almost all season he just posted his fourth straight quality start seven of his last eight have been quality starts and he’s got six wins on the season because he is going deep into games only once all year he’s he thrown fewer than five innings pitched so you think with this much time now into the season you just don’t question anymore right you just keep him in your roster you just be glad you have him but at the same time you got to worry is the other shoe going to fall at some point one thing that might be concerning is that all of a sudden the strikeouts have dried up over his last two starts although he’s been effective only three Ks in the last 12 innings pitched and of course there’s always the worry about that negative regression his ERA is really good but his Sierra is a 3.80 the X FIP which would be expected fielding independent pitching is the 3.99 is he going to see that ARA go up it may not reach that level right closer to four but it’s probably going to go up at some point and that’s especially going to be the case if the strikeouts disappear now his strikeouts have not completely gone away it’s not like I think that all of a sudden he’s forgotten how to miss bats and again he has still been effective in his last couple of starts but I think this might be the peak of his value i’ll trade Boyd if I have him i’ll just get somebody I feel like is a little bit more stable all right here’s the one we’ve been waiting for right you know I’m going to talk about Sandy Alcantara of the Miami Marlins i’ve been saying all season long first two months you’re just going to have to wait stay patient here right this is a second half play right we know he’s not going to look like the Sai Young version of himself we’re not even sure what we’re going to get but feel like he could definitely come on later in the season and now it might already be happening back-to-back quality starts he’d only had one all season long until this past week and six innings each time including no runs given up on his last outing now manager Clayton McCullik has mentioned something about him working more glove side and following through more and you know some sort of a slight adjustment to his mechanics also the fact the pitch mix has changed a little bit a lot more curveball lately a little bit more of the force seamer a little less of the offspe stuff it seems to be working but there’s a catch here and the catch is that these last two starts both of them where Sandy all of a sudden looked really good happen to come against the Pirates and the Rockies which I don’t need to but we’ll tell you are two of the worst offenses in the majors so are we buying into the adjustments are we buying into the fact that this was just very weak competition and are we buying into Sandy rest of the season whether he’s in Miami or not because now we also are starting to hear the rumors you know we’re not that far out from trade season because the deadline will be approaching in July and we’re hearing that the Dodgers are interested in San Die that’s got to be good for him right and this is what I’ve been saying all along this is a second half play because even if the Miami Marlins are going to limit his innings and be careful with him once he gets traded whoever’s got him doesn’t need to worry about that so since this all pretty much confirms what I had said all along I’m going to say I’m keeping Alcantara i mean it wouldn’t make sense to get rid of him now unless you really feel like this was just a matter of the competition which I know that played a factor right it had to but I don’t think that all of a sudden he’s going to go back to getting lit up and look I still think he has value the rest of the season so if I have Alcantara I’m keeping him you know this is one of those players who still has plenty left in the tank and I think second half we’re going to be glad that you got him all right now we’ve talked about some really experienced pitchers let’s go to a pitcher believe it or not who has still not even thrown an inning in the majors but you have a decision on what to do with Bubba Chandler because either you’ve been stashing him all season or maybe just a couple weeks and you picked him up because you’re waiting for the day that he gets called up are you still waiting on him well believe it or not I think the answer is no it might actually be time to cut bait here now this doesn’t just have to do with the fact that we’re still waiting and wondering you know I mean he could get called up any day right theoretically but do you actually want him anymore i know it sounds weird but let’s take a look you might not have noticed that what’s happening in his minor league starts he’s all of a sudden lost the ability to command the strike zone his last start he only recorded two outs after walking four batters the game before that was already bad enough he gave up three runs in two innings and this is actually just a continuation of a trend which maybe this actually lends some credence to the Pirates not calling him up he has 19 walks over his last 26 innings pitched at the minor league level i mean all of a sudden this is a guy who looked like a no-brainer as a major leager to one that you’ve got to wonder what’s going on here so I think between the fact that the control is an issue and the promotion is still very much in doubt I think that you can just let him go because even if let’s say tomorrow they’re like “Okay let’s just see what he does you know big league uniform are you sure you want him and if he can’t even keep it together at the AAA level is he going to be walking batters left and right when he gets called up?” No I don’t think that’s going to happen you know every player responds differently jacob Misarowski who just got the call and made his debut the big question with him was the walk rate he didn’t walk anybody right he pitched five scoreless i mean okay he did walk a couple of batters but still he had pretty good control in his debut and you know I don’t think Bubba Chandler is all of a sudden going to be like the Wild Thing but I also don’t think you have to just keep waiting and waiting because he’s also not a sure thing anymore all right I do have one hitter to talk about it’s a guy that I’ve also been carrying the candle for all season long it’s Matt Shaw all of a sudden Matt Shaw is looking very droppable four straight hitless games and then sat on the bench on Sunday is it time to give up on him again well the the thing here is it depends right it it usually does depend but in this case very much so on your roster right your league’s depth and and all the situations here because sure you don’t have to keep him when he’s in funk and he’s probably not a guy you want to depend on starting every single day but at the same time this is just a bad week i mean I don’t think we can just give up on a rookie after a bad week still in all since getting recalled he’s hitting 264 only one home run so the power hasn’t yet shown up but he has seven steels and you know this is a player that is going to be valuable he qualifies second third and short i always like that you can pick and choose your spots he’s better served as a utility player on your bench and again once he heats up which I think he will eventually I would like to have him so in general I would say I’d rather keep and in leagues where I have him I am still keeping but I won’t say that you absolutely can’t cut him if you need the roster space and if you’re making those tough cuts you need somebody to pick up well obviously got the top waiver wire options here if you haven’t checked out this week’s version here are the waiverwire pickups I’m making
