Mets Outlook 2025: World Series Dreams or Epic Bust?!

hello all welcome back to sports not baseball podcast of the furls I am Matt Higgins along with my co host Matt Johnson how you doing today Matt I’m doing great my morning started with baseball so that’s that’s a good day that is a good day I uh was sleeping so I did not get to watch today’s game but we will go over that later on today’s agenda uh we have an interview coming up first thing actually with the Jake Brown contributor for Mets on s I and also the host of the Mets Daily Show on YouTube and the Mets Magic Podcast on top of that we’ll be talking about the Dodgers Cubs game that Matt watched in the entirety while I was asleep in my bed and under the covers after that we’ll get into MLB award predictions MJ actually posted today on Sports Com his predictions will go over his picks and my picks as well and then we will end the day on our favorite immaculate grid will try to beat our rarity score of 15 last week most likely won’t but damn it we’ll give it the old college try my goal is to get under 100 let’s hope fingers crossed now we’re starting off today with our interview with Jake Brown welcome back to the deferrals with myself Matt Higgins and my co host Matt Johnson and we have a very special guest today Jake Brown contributor for Mets on Si and host of the Mets Daily Show on YouTube how you doing today Jake how old are we getting that we worked what like 10 years ago together when I was a young pup and I think that when we worked together I had hair and then working in this industry now I have no hair so that tells you what this industry does to you it just gets rid of your hair uh but yeah that’s why you worry at me I don’t want anybody see my bald spot on Johnson I think it might be time to join the dark side and maybe join the bald side uh it’s a beautiful look listen I rub Brazilian but I got the my Brazilian bum bum cream I just rub it on you just get a little cream you little little touch up rub it on the head and yeah I was a young pup you know I was interviewing some stars back then I I had like you know rappers come in there actors it was a fun time there very little pay but a fun time oh yes tell me about it yeah but we won’t name the company but people can find out on the road even have all companies we don’t need to talk about yeah all the pants nothing give us more money we’re poor you even had a yet American Idol co host as well one time Constantine Maroon yeah he’s a friend of mine he’s nuts he’s a big New York sports fan and he was just old he got lazy at time not that he was lazy he had other interests which was performing and he still actor he performs he does like journey cover band music and that’s cool listen he’s late 40s and still going he was on Idol 20 years ago so and he would finish in 6th place so forgot to finish in sixth place is still be singing you know around the world is pretty pretty cool but we had a good run yeah that the hope was one day me Constantine I’ll tell you a little tidbit Mark Turnoff who used to be the WFM program director he had said to us like I could see you in Constantine being starting off like as a morning show in some market maybe a smaller market and I was like oh wow like I was convinced and then it never ended up happening but maybe it’s in the cards when when he’s in his 50s haha alright well let’s get let’s uh get to the Mets right now um obviously big signing this off season with Juan Soto the 765 million I thought you’re gonna say Griffin Canning Juan Soto I thought you’re gonna say one year 4.25 for Griffin Canning there we go can’t forget about Frankie Montos and his 34 million that’s and he’s already on the shelf brought back Pete Alonzo so first question for you what are the expectations for the Mets this year and is it World Series or bust World Series are buses tough because the Dodgers are the Avengers and and they’re already undefeated shocker I mean they’re just gonna be I mean there’s 14 injuries away from the Mets probably being like that’s how good they are I’ve never seen like they have a 12 man rotation it’s something you can’t even make in a video game possible and they have so is it World Series or bust not exactly I think that’s the goal I think that’s a realistic goal because listen if you could take down the Dodgers best of seven there’s no question they could be anyone of the American League so if they stay healthy they add someone of the rotation I think they can I won’t call World Series above if they missed the playoffs that’s a disgrace I mean that’s the bare minimum where last year it was compete for the playoffs and obviously we know what happened Omg grim is everything that happened but this year it’s at least gets in the playoffs and then try and take down the Dodgers that’s the goal and you know I’m encouraged I think at the minimum this is a 90 win team if everything goes bad 85 at the worst but I think this team should win anywhere between 90 and 95 games and I love what they did this off season they added a ton of depth it’s not just the guys one through 26 I always say David Sterns is a genius at 27 through 40 someone like Jose Glacius was probably 31st on the roster worked his way up you know because of injuries and became the hero of the Mets so it might be a Joey Menessis comes up at some point from AAA and is a hero for a guy who gets her it might be you know Huascar Brazobaum who gets up here and becomes a hero out of the bullpen it might be a Griffin Canic so love what they did love the depth and obviously a team 2 inch on the penit that adds Juan Soto needs to be taken seriously now it seems like they’re gonna have to use some of that depth in the beginning of the season especially with their lineup right now Brandon Nemo sir but he might not be you know serious as initially thought but you got two guys start you got two starters starting on the IL for the season and Jeff Mcneil and Francisco Alvarez how long are these guys going to be out for what kind of looks like their injury status and who will be filling in for them while they’re out yeah well Alvarez I expect to be back early may it was around 6 to 8 weeks and this was about a week or two ago so my guess is somewhere probably mid may the Mets will you know up to come back and rehab you know he heard the same hand he heard last year that left hand he’s a little bit aggressive sometimes but this time it apparently came during batting practice so it wasn’t Wally was catching he’s known for sometimes putting his glove too far ahead and getting the bat you know to hit his left hand so that is his receiving hand so you wanna be careful about that especially early in the season so for now Luis Torres who replaced him you know very nicely last year Mets picked up off the scrappy from the Yankees minor leagues and he did a terrific job I mean his shining moment came in London where he tagged the plate you know again got hit you know by like the ball or the bat I think it was tagged home through to first and everyone’s like who is this Louis Torrence guy yeah he threw out almost everyone he’s not the greatest bat so the Mets are gonna lack out of that 8 9 spot wherever he hits the backup might be a guy who worked at Whole Foods in the offseason I’m not even kidding he was he was he stocking shelves at Wholefield Sanger Hayden Sanger or Jackson reets to reets is the only guy with majorly experienced that I could see them picking up someone off the scrappy before opening day you know teams always wave players they’ll be catchers out there McCann former met will not be out there as the Braves just picked them up I actually would have liked him I thought as a good backup for now 3rd stringer down the road so to be Torres at the start and in second base Jeff big deals only gonna miss about two weeks of the regular season he’ll miss anywhere between 10 to 15 games with an oblique injury my gut is you know he’s back at game like 11 12 whenever it is so they won’t be without him for long but it I guess and what it seems to be what they’re doing is they’re going to platoon Luis Sanhelicunia Brett Baby I think that’s the goal here so opening day my guess it’s Acuna against Framber Valdez next Thursday and then whenever there’s a righty on the mound baby will play and then Acuna is kind of a super utility man where if it’s a blowout late in games he might come in for Lindor Lindor had some back issues down the stretch last year might spell him late in blowout he will come in as a pinch runner he will come in as a pinch hitter of a lefty comes in a face prep baby so I do like that combo and then it’s kind of like the survivor or like Hunger Games like the the best of the two survives when Jeff Mcneil comes back cause they probably can’t keep them both in the roster I’d personally like Acuna much more I think yeah the fact he could steal bases for you maybe it’s his name everyone wants the you know the nerd stats wanna say he doesn’t this is exit blast he’s hit the ball hard enough but you know I go off what my eyes see and what my eyes saw is him step in for the face of the franchise and was productive down the stretch last year he stole 30 or 40 bases in AAA he can play your third short and second base where Brett babies a third baseman that’s attempting to play second but he’s not gonna do it that well baby doesn’t steal bases so I I like Acuna’s battle a little bit more I like his glove more I like his versatility more so I I I think for two weeks we see Acuna and baby and I think after that you know I think it gets left hand pitchers when Mcneil’s back if Acuna shines you’re the first few weeks I think Acuna continues to play and the Mets are hoping that eventually he is their second baseman of the future and you mention Stern’s ability to find depth of just dude Milwaukee doing in New York so Jesse Winker minor injury but one guy you mentioned on Twitter someone who I’m familiar with obviously watching with San Francisco Johnson come with prospect Alexander Canario so we see one of the guys or see their others who really impressed you during spring training so far yeah for sure and I forgot to answer math about Nemo Nemo’s fun you know he’s 90% he said he did play the outfield yesterday so my my guess is he’s going to be the left fielder and then he might be spelled and DH some days so my guess is five to six days a week Nemo’s left fielder maybe one to two he DH’s I like Canario but there’s no real spot on the roster for him so the Mets aren’t a tough predicament because he doesn’t have options so you know maybe they could sneak him through waivers and get him back but he feels like a guy that anyone that needs an outfielder or even a DH is going to pick up I think he has an incredibly high upside so I think we wait and see because with how the injuries are going like if Nemo did you know re injure that knee or his planar fasciitis is still an issue I think Canary is the next guy up but because they have Wanker who it was a cramp yesterday it seems like he’ll be fine maybe the Mets will give him a day or two to get right but Winker’s the next guy and then strongly Marte’s another guy that plays the corner outfield so right field you know who’s there every day Soto’s not gonna say he’s gonna play 1 62 and right center you’re going to get a mix of Tyrone Taylor and Jose Siri and then left Nemo and then like I said it’ll be Marte and Winker depending on if it’s a lefty or righty pitching I just don’t think there’s a spot for Canario I hope some spot is created maybe the Mets carry one less reliever and keep Canario but it just feels strange because now they already have six outfielders like where does Canario fit in the picture I think they got him in case this Nemo injury did or does become serious or there’s another injury or listen Starley Marte his knee has bothered him since the summer like he’s he’s looked at as the Mets part time DH if he really can’t ever play the outfield and the Mets determine that by Opening Day maybe Canario gets there but I have trouble thinking that he’s going to clear waivers no one takes him and he ends up on the Mets roster absolutely and you know the Sterns edition Clayholm’s opening stay starter he mentioned when he was signed that he’s kind of aiming for 160 innings for his innings limit how realistic do you think that is for a guy who’s his careers previous career high was 70 and before that recent years he’s been at around 60 so what are your expectations from this season and how realistic you think 160 and exist cloak opening day home spinning day there’s the slot I mean who would have thought we’re sitting here Thursday Framber Valdez in Houston and it’s Clay Holmes as the opening day started now when once when when I got down and he’ll probably be back late April once he went down you knew it was either Sanga or Holmes maybe the outside chance of David Peter said but I’m happy for Clay Holmes listen the Mets pitching lab is a serious thing like what Jeremy Heffner in this lab is doing it’s a legit thing like players the pitchers that come in talk about the lab they talk about the work they do in the off season there’s a lot of stuff I don’t even understand technology stuff you know different pitches these guys learn Clay Holmes has added a kick change that is filthy and you know Yankee vans wanna say good luck with Clay Holmes listen it’s not my fault your manager sucks and he kept Clay Holmes in a closures role when he was imploding I mean Aaron Boones Aaron Boone when a guy imploses a closure you get him out of the closures role instead he said no we trust him listen his confidence was shot there’s no issue with that it happens to closers especially on the biggest market in New York Edwin Diaz struggled as a closer he said my confidence is shot Carl’s Mendoza being the good master is he said hey we’re gonna put you in like the seventh inning and mop up duty and get you back to your old self they didn’t do that play on so I don’t wanna hear Yankee fans saying good luck good luck the guy was a two time All Star the last three years so yes he had a bad stretch of closing games being a starting pitcher is not the same as closing games is a lot less leverage you can you can throw more pitches because you’re going more innings and you need more pitches when you’re a reliever throw 15 pitches you’re not throwing a pitch arsenal five pitches six pitches so Clay Holmes adds the I believe it was the four seamer now and he adds that kick change so you had two pitches I think he’s gonna be good listen they’re paying them three years 38 they gave Frankie Montas more than that which the worst concept of the off season looks like frankiemont that was like very much you did it way too early and it didn’t make much sense but I’ll give him better the doubt because he’s hurt will wait till he actually pitches and games that was the one that was I think David Sterns using his hey he pitched for me Milwaukee I like them there let’s take him in the pitching lab and her work we’ll see that’s yet to be determined but can he reach one 60 I think he can because I think the Mets are gonna be smart here the reason the Mets added Canning they have McGill they have Blackburn sure it’s not a murderer’s row of back end starters but they are guys who can eat innings and I think their hope is that they could skip a start here and there for homes they use the off days right you know some starts if he’s if he’s doing well and they’re dominating they pull him after five innings and they go to Jose Budo for two or three so I think they’re gonna be smart with it they’re gonna limit it early on five innings five innings then six there’s not gonna be times you see him throw eight or nine but man if he could give you a six innings of two run ball with how good this Mets bullpen is I think you sign up for that every day of the week now speaking of the rotation obviously you brought up Frankie Montos and Shawn Menaya both of are battling injuries Montos he’s not expected back until least June with the last strain in his throwing shoulder while Menaya is expected back like you said mid to late April with that strain right oblique who will be filling their innings while they’re out yeah well listen I I think there’s a chance my task gets back in may but lots are tricky sometimes they’re longer sometimes they’re shorter I think we might see Matas by mid may but I’m not losing sleep like I’ll wait like wait till Matas is 100% like the Mets don’t need him right now so right now the rotation looks like this and it could change in a week or in the Mets aside but this seems like these six guys will make the Opening Day roster it’ll be Clay Holmes it’ll be Kodi Senga be David Peterson those are the three that you know David Peterson coming off a career year at a sub 3 Ra Kodi Senga coming off a year where he pitched once and it was the day I was holding the Omg sign by the dugout and I must have been bad luck I gave the I gave the sign in the suite to Brandon Nimos pairs to hold everyone’s asking me for a picture and then there you go Kodi Senga pulls up you know lame on his damn calf and then he missed the season and then everyone yells at him cause he wasn’t good in the playoffs when he wasn’t ready anyways I trust Kodi sang if he could stay healthy he added a new pitch which is my favorite pitch in the history of sports which is the ephus he calls it the miracle ball it’s 63 miles an hour I love anything below 69 and below nice I love it that is my favorite velocity pitch is 69 and below you know I think this five and below the store you get things for five bucks and below I’m a 69 and below guy so I like that new pitch and David Peterson will see he’s probably not replicating a 2 90 or a again that was like an unforeseen season but you never know what the lap now the last three spots I mentioned him earlier Griffin Cannon Griffin Canning could be a revelation for this team they paid him 4.25 million everyone laughed including me I was like okay I assume he’s like our seventh starter Griffin I don’t read too much in a spring stats but I read into stuff and his slider has been filthy in spring and they are facing major league hitters it’s not like all these games he’s gone up against minor league so you know at least the top of the order for most of these teams they’re playing their major leaguers and Griffin Canning has been almost unhittable and I think he is the classic example of Sterns taking him into that Hefner pitching lap and his slider he’s been using a lot more and I think it’s been fooling guys this was the guy last year to give up 31 homers to the Angels but we know what the Angels are it is where pitching goes to die the Angels pitching coaches they don’t have a lab there I don’t know what they have they have like a couch it’s not a lab guys just sit and they watch video they they don’t learn I don’t know what to say graveyard out there yeah it’s everyone’s dead like all my friends are dead put me in the head whatever the lyrics are that’s what the pitchers in Los Angeles Angeles Havana I’m are and I think he’s gonna come here and work so Griffin Canning’s making this rotation he’s just earned it his springs been too good so he’ll be the fourth and then the fifth comes down to to Paul Blackburn Tyler McGill I think Tyler McGill’s getting the spot and I think they’re keeping Blackburn as a long man out of the pen McGill has one or two options left Blackburn has none Canning has none so because of options and contractual reasons they’re going to start those 6 on the opening day roster and then one shamanize back by probably late April if they take their time cause he’s got to have like a part 2 now spring training but he is throwing already which is encouraging I think McGill makes the rotation a guy who has started Opening day a few years ago a guy who was really in a year he’s gotta prove it I think he has proven it at times but he’s been inconsistent McGill you I mentioned earlier about five pitch this guy’s got like eight pitches he got like a pitch that’s called like the great American sport it’s like it’s it’s a weird pitch it’s like a it’s like a curveball meets a splitter meets a fork ball all in one um it’s kind of like a trip to Denny’s at 2:00am when you were in college and you said all the pancakes the waffles the chicken the bacon that you know the toast you know plenty of Hofstra 2:00am Denny’s trips for me that’s what Tyler McGill’s pitch arsenal is and I think Blackburn’s coming off an off season spinal fluid leak surgery we might need a doctor I don’t know what that is I’ve taken a lot of leaks but not a lot of spinal fluid leaks so I can’t I don’t think leaks are not fun I’ve had a spinal fluid leak really I’ve never met someone who said a spinal fluid leak how do you how do you feel what happened oh man I had a spinal fluid headache so when the headaches just like covers like the entire top of like your head and it’s brutal like you’re just in intense pain the entire time yeah I didn’t realize it had to do with headache I just thought your back like you slept wrong or your back was in pain or something so a lot of headaches hopefully he’s not giving Mets fans headaches on the mound cause then I’ll start my fluid leaking of this final chords so I think Blackburn will be the long man and then when I comes back and then we’ll see I think the Mets will reassess mid to late April hey do we cut Blackburn do we send McGill down they have options they have seven starters when Menai is back eight when montage is back and you know there’ll be another injury or two so I think those are the six that crack the roster at opening day now saying with the pitching how was the bullpen looking this season for the mess and are there any like under the under the radar arms uh that we should be monitoring that could possibly be pitching critical innings for them this season yeah I I love the Mets bullpen I think it’s one of their strengths I think they have a lot of depth there there’s gonna be some lightning in the bottles diamond in the rough guys that you see from this bullpen the key to this bullpen is the two obvious Edmund Diaz AJ mentor those are the two guys at the back end that you need to be good this is a big year for Edward Diaz he has a chance to opt out after the season and listen if he craps the bed he’s probably opting in and taking I believe the 18 million that he’s gonna be getting so this is a big I wouldn’t say prove it year for Edmond Diaz but listen in Edmond Diaz Met’s career he he’s had one elite year and then a couple of okay years I think we get you know the trumpets and the the aura all kind of wrap our mind around like he’s incredible he’s unhittable but he has been unhittable those points he gives you heart attacks and he has sub 3 Ra but it didn’t feel like that with everything that happened last year and the drama and losing the job for a bit and the sticky stuff and everything that happened so I need to see you know a big year from Edwin Diaz and AJ Metro the metal relief Jose Buddha was a revelation he’s gonna be like your two winning guy um Danielle Nunez is back he was a revelation last year they would love him to stay healthy Reid Garrett I keep saying revelation he had another really solid year for this year for this team Ryan Static a guy who got here late but I think Mets fans fell in love with he had playoff success he was really good in September and I think static is a critical piece and Static’s a guy who had a historic postseason for the Astros a few years ago so the Mets love static Max Crannick is if you’re talking about under the radar name he’s that guy hasn’t pitched in the big league since 2022 has been lights out in spring he’s been unhittable in spring he’s got filthy stuff he’s got high heat Max Crannick is a guy that’s gonna pitch some in this middle relief who’s gonna be good anyone dark horses I mentioned him earlier he might not make the team although just cause there’s no spot but who Oscar Brazovon the guy that the Mets traded for the trade deadline who is solid for this team not great but he was solid but the when the Mets got him he’s one of the best relievers in baseball from the Marlins I mean no one from the Marlins really anyone pays attention to cause the Marlins but who Oscar Brazobon’s an under the radar guy as well other names to watch out for Tyler Zuber he comes from that Ray you wanna talk about pitching lab the rays turn molehills into mountains and they turn guys you never heard of into elite pitchers so Zuber comes from that system now in the met system that’s like the Avengers of pitching labs the rays and the Mets joining together as one um to try and take down the Avenger Los Angeles Los Angeles Dodgers so Zuber is another name and then they got some other guys that could be engine Genesis Cabrera left you pitcher the Blue Jays last year Anthony Ghost who was on the Long Island Ducks a guy who was an outfielder became a pitcher and it really is great Anthony Ghost for any earlier and he’s got big arms he is jacked this guy is really jacked and anyone who becomes outfielder a pitcher is intriguing to me so those are kind of the outset Sean Refolley had the best era in the Mets bullpen and they got hurt his story is that he’s always hurt every year he’s never pitched more than 30 innings in a season but Sean Refolley’s another name that the Mets if he’s you know stash and Triple a could call up at some point so I just gave you a million names and they’re all serviceable guy so again if Diaz and mentor do their job I think this Mets I think the Mets offense is their strength but when you look at the strength that not a lot of people want to talk about it’s their bopen yeah I know talk about revelations absolute last September Acuna really came on had nine 66 Lps is there anyone cause I’ve sealed a roll this year is anyone else in the farm for some top prospects or even lower who you think could be a surprise make MLB debut this year or just really surprise Mets fans in the summer you know depth is tested or just if anything is new in September yeah well baby I’m not gonna even name cause he’s been in the big leagues I’m not a Brett baby guy I I I’ve said I met Stanley he’s a 4A battery to me he’s great in Triple a knocking the big leagues I did find out after I said that 4A batteries do exist I’ve never used one but I was told that they don’t exist but apparently they do again I’m not Bob the builder as you can see from my backdrop so 4A batteries exist and that’s what Brett Batty is you never use them he’s there he exists he maybe for high power equipment but he just never gets it done in the big leagues and I hope he does listen I’m a fan of this team I I want him to do well but he just hasn’t proven it consistently um another name Ronnie Mauricio is a guy who’s gonna be in AAA cause he’s not getting into games yet I love Ronnie Mauricio he hasn’t a game action a while he’s not gonna play really till April and AAA but he’s another name to watch I think at some point he’s going to be the Mets DH I think if starling marches traded or hurt Jesse Winker’s only one year I think next year Ronnie Mauricio could end up being a full time DH cause there might not be a spot in the infield for him so look out for Ronnie Mauricio I don’t think we’re end up seeing uh Jett Williams this year the Triple a name to watch again is Ryan Clifford I think Ryan Clifford’s a guy that’s been compared to guy you know well guy that I know all guy that I had in studio a guy that still owes me $20 he gets compared to Lenny Dykstra he gets compared to nails a lot as a hard nose but maybe not doing as much of the not the Diet Coke but the other variety of beverage uh you know around his nose area and certain drugs but you know he’s not I’m hoping he’s not doing that I don’t know I don’t know Ryan Clifford I hope he’s not that crazy off the field and getting strippers and stuff but Ryan Clifford is another name uh to watch to keep an eye on a hard nose player I love um I love what this farm system has I love some of the guys but I think Jeff Jett Williams Ryan Clifford are kind of the Ryan Clifford’s no what did I say what did I say now I’m losing my mind I said Ryan Clifford is not Lenny Dykestra what did I say I said now I’m losing my mind I I mentioned Lenny Dykestra now I lose my mind Ryan Clifford is not Lenny Dykestra that is um oh no I lost the name it’s gonna come to me it’s not Ryan Clifford Jett well you were talking Jett Williams Jett what Drew Gilbert I don’t think I said Drew Gilbert is the one compared to Lenny Dykes or Ryan Clifford I think is if the Mets don’t have Alonzo back next year Ryan Clifford is the first baseman of the future his powers insane his eyes insane his OB p’s over 100 points higher than an average so I think Clifford the future I don’t think he’s ready yet so in terms of this year it’s Drew Gilbert aka Lenny Dykes there it is or um the other guy I’ve I I that’s enough of prospect talk for me haha do you think any of them will be used to trade for a pitcher at some point at the deadline I think so yeah well listen I think Al Qatar is actually because the Marlins are about to have a grievance if they don’t add 25 million dollars in the payroll so to me it’s like how are they gonna trade a 17 million dollar alcontra if they need to add 25 million unless this grievance is not a big deal and they just get through it that’s why I thought stalling Martin of the Marlins made a lot of sense in a trade he’s owed $21 million Marlin solve all their issues by just acquiring Starley Martin I would love Alcantara cease to me is interesting because the Padres you expect to be in the race so if they’re in the race why are they trading their ace or their No. 2 I guess you could call Michael King the race why would they trade cease if they’re in it but if there you know a couple games under or maybe a couple games over 500 I would definitely acquire dilloncies but to me I’m not in the business of trading three of those guys I named for a rental I just think it is dumb it’s not a need you have a good bullpen clayholmes can end up being a Swiss Army knife at the end of the year as a starter slash reliever I just would not love trading for a rental acantar though is very intriguing to me and I don’t think the Marlins would ask for a boatload in terms of prospects so it depends what they ask for but I don’t wanna trade Mauricio um I don’t wanna trade Clifford I’m cool with trading Jett Williams I’m in the minority in that I’m very cool I would walk repay to the airport I just don’t think I don’t think he has any value I do not want to trade Acuna I know a lot of Mets fans say you’re dumb I think he will become a star in this league I don’t care what the analytics show I think he has that it factor about him and that swagger about him and his brothers Ronald Acuna so I factor that in as well that’s one guy I don’t trade and Mauricio I don’t trade yet cause I want to see how he comes back on this injury but I would be down to trade Jett Williams maybe um Drew Gilbert as well in a trade for one of those guys I’m not ready to trade Brandon Sprout cause why are you trading a future starting pitcher and a guy I didn’t mention sprout is a guy we’re gonna see at some point I mentioned the hitter sprode is a minor leaguer that I think by June or July we see in this Mets rotation um so I wouldn’t trade him but maybe a guy like Jonatang he pitched the other day in the spring breakout game is another name that you may be put in the trade market Luke Ritter is another hitter in AAA you may be having the trade market but I would avoid trading Acuna Mauricio and Ryan Clifford and we’ll get you out on this question what’s your prediction this season for your Mets I want to say world see I always say I feel like I might as well just say World Series like I think there is a shot they could take down the Dodgers there’s obviously a bit of homerism in that prediction but listen if you look at what the intangibles what this team has what they went through last year and watching the Dodgers win in front of them I think that is a big factor what they have in this manager in Carlos Mendoza’s even kield is never too many highs never too many lows I think they have the right manager listen I think the Braves are gonna be tough the Phillies will be tough but I don’t think the Phillies had a I’m sorry the Phillies did not have a good enough offseason they doubt it you know adding you know Jesus Lozarto and Max Kepler is not that appealing to me so I’m looking at the Phillies to be in the race but I’m looking at the division to come down to the Braves and Mets I think the Mets honestly get it as a wild card with somewhere around 92 wins I think the Braves either it’s a tiebreaker or they win by one game I think it’ll very much come down to the last one or two games to the division and you know I’ll just the Homer me I’ll say the Mets win the World Series over the Red Sox I think the Red Sox pitching is locked and loaded adding Bregman into the fold I just think the Red Sox are gonna be a force to watch out for in that American League and if I take the homerism out I’ll take the Dodgers over the Red Sox so it’ll be Mets or Dodgers versus the Red Sox in the World Series well there you got it from Jake Brown don’t need to watch the season anymore we know he’s gonna win in the World Series that’s what’s yeah I mean it’s it’s like I said 12 injuries like it’s yeah it’s a roster that’s so hard to top that even if five starters got hurt that they’ll have Clay and Kershaw for like Game 3 still it’s like Clay and Kershaw is like their seven starter it it’s I mean I’m not gonna be going back to like midseason at them at their earliest just put them in bubble wrap to October I mean that’s you can put Showy Ohtani and Bubble Wrap till October and they’ll still win so that’s the downside of this baseball season I think baseball in general right now I think the NBA it’s about load management guys not playing which is the downside and maybe the style play baseball it’s about the Dodgers being better than everyone else and you know I think they get a lot of the blame a lot of the blame should go to the teams like the Pirates who don’t give out more than one year contracts it’s those lower market teams who give no money who you know have have like DJ Stewart plays they’re starting D8 DJ Stewart is a bomb I had to watch him with the Mets he had one good month got a contract and they got all the chance in the world so those are the teams hurting the sport but we’ll see I think it’s Mets Braves Dodgers National League but in the end it might be the Dodgers have too much yeah I mean every team could have signed one suit if they wanted to there’s 30 billionaires in this league going teams apparently got offered more he said he’s someone else offered him more money than the message yeah I’m very intrigued who offered more I assume it’s the Dodgers but who knows I think it was the Blue Jays it might although the Blue Jays reportedly glad juniors contract was heavily deferred so that might be yeah that could yeah I’m sure it was deferls and that’s why he didn’t do it he wants his money he wants it now I don’t blame him he’s 26 years old this is the greatest time of his life this is where he’s getting girls Birkin bags and this is where he’s getting you know his own island like this is his time to do all that I I’d probably be in a similar boat where I just want the cash and not the furls but I think the people who have the endorsements like Ohtani who make as much endorsements as their salary they don’t need the money now they could get it when they’re older my mindset is what if I’m dead by 45 or 50 like I’ll never see that money so that’s probably bleesh a bad financial decision but I want my 8 7 7 cash now yeah 8 7 7 cash now that’s gonna be stuck in my head all day now yeah yeah thanks Jake I appreciate that well thank you so much Jake Brown for joining us today on the Deforels Podcast catch Jake’s work on Mets on SCI and also on the Met Stanley Show on YouTube is there any social media channels you’d like to throw out there yeah it’s still Jake Brown radio I’m thinking about a brand change because radio is as dead as Gary Coleman right now it’s just it’s slowly dying off and rest in peace Gary Coleman he’s a real one short legend short king um so I’m thinking about that it’s it’s Jake Brown Radio ever I do TikTok live streams as well Jake Brown Radio on YouTube Mets Daily is Monday through Friday every day as as much as it hurts my mental health to talk about the Mets every single freaking day I’m doing it for now Mets NSI I might have a new show coming as well so stay tuned to my social media for that um so some things are in the works at the moment but yeah Jake Brown Radio everywhere Mets Daily Mets NSI and yeah I’ll probably get back to doing Jets Flight Club talk about bad for mental health The New York Jets were very bad for my mental health so I kind of put that in a hold right now cause I wanted to jump off the Brooklyn Bridge talking about the Jets this year uh but eventually Jets Flight Club maybe Met Magic podcast I bring back but you know there’s I’m Jamaican I got 20 jobs I’m part Jamaican now I’m no longer Jewish I’m no longer Italian Irish Hungarian I’m actually Jamaican well you are from Queen so that’s true Jamaica Queen shout out outside Jamaica Queens Nicki Minaj Baby ST John’s by the way let’s go Johnny’s well thank you so much for joining us today Jake really appreciate it yeah good to catch up with you guys good to see you thanks for having me and baseball’s back it’s the best time of the year it is it is once again big thanks to Jake Brown for today’s interview helping to cover the New York Mets and giving us the their 2025 Outlaw now let’s move on today’s game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs just a heads up for everybody out there this is being recorded on Tuesday afternoon and will be coming out Wednesday so we only know about the one game today we do not have a Delorean we do not have a flux capacitor so we cannot travel into the future to find out what happened for onesies game when this comes out right MJ I don’t know about you I really enjoyed the home run that’s gonna be it on Wednesday it’s it was a spectacular sight to see and just also what Ohtani did was insane just some Grady what did what did you do you’re gonna you’re gonna have to see it to believe that that’s one of those things yeah I’m not I’m not waking up on that that’s not happening so our dear friend Matt Johnson here was awake at the crack of dawn to watch the game while I was curled up under the covers in my bed sleeping so MJ how was the game today yeah you know it’s enjoyable gaming one thing we always have to keep in mind things like this we saw the game was played in Korea last year is again all the other teams are in spring training mode and not just like oh it’s you know one or a few days until the pregnancy starts its weeks so if Dodgers and Cubs there’s still a little bit of rust I got to shake off the kind of saw that we didn’t see any home runs and there was a long stretch multiple winnings where we didn’t see a single ball leave the infield so again you things like that you gotta remember it’s just these guys still being into form for the Dodgers they were without Mookie Betts who had an ellisted fortune to fly home he’s actually lost nearly 15 pounds because of it oh good lord so yeah they don’t they don’t expect it to impact this Opening day status at Dodger Stadium but for the time being he couldn’t play in Tokyo Series Freddie Freeman was also a late scratch for the rib injury it’s actually something that he’s kind of bought to him last year but he’s obviously played through again Dodger just being precautious but so no Mookie no Freddie Freeman Dodger still came out on top 4 to one and you know one thing I feel like about scan again Tokyo series so you had Imanoga you had Yamamoto both on the mound and they both in front of their fellow countrymen in front of a sold out crowd of Tokyo Dome where tickets were going for over $2,000 at minimum school the excitement was high pricey it is it is pricey and credit to these guys and you know cause that’s kind of a high intensity emotional environment friends and family there are people they haven’t seen probably months or a year it’s and they kind of delivered even though I got four showdown innings the command was a little shaky although one beings the strike zone was even shakier oh or walks Yamamoto he allowed to run early second inning but after that he retired last nine batters he faced five innings one run ball and he got the win and the Dodgers bullpen for hitless innings with the only batter reaching being the man who made the error that also proved costly because that was a 3 running for the Dodgers John Birdie whose speed was on display his defense and his bat were not but he was only one to reach and that was for shit out of things but Dodgers bullpen to cruise to a 4 1 win and really my biggest takeaway from this game because with the Dodgers lineup without the two biggest stars I’m not gonna make too much of a judgment but oh my goodness the Dodgers pitching Yamamoto once he kind of nailed down once he kind of got the emotions out of the way he was locked in and that bullpen which keep in mind they didn’t even have to get there anybody they just they could pick and choose they had a nice lead you did see Banda you did see Trinan you did see freight and Signy Trent that’s Tara Scott and just four brilliant innings and they have so much stuff on that they have guys like rather roll Evan Phillips on the IL right now yeah and this bullpen is just loaded and this is just a taste of what’s come from best bullpen in baseball yeah it’s like the only thing that’s gonna beat the Dodgers this year is just injuries that’s that’s what’s gonna take the Dodgers down they’re they’re they’re literally the Avengers right now and the only thing that could defeat them is Thanos in what Infinity War that I mean that’s the only person that could defeat the Dodgers right now yeah yeah I mean cause like what we’ve talked about things before they were teams that you know people thought well maybe if things break right for them they could challenge things did not break right for them in fact oh they they’re just literally broken right now yeah literally broken yeah yeah so the Dodgers biggest threat has already gone down and uh for MLB season where fans are kind of worried of it’s just gonna be a run towards that I’ll just win another title starting to turn that way sure is yeah but you know you were probably one of like 10 people in the United States probably watching that game this morning I’ll be if it’s Jesus but you know it was very early it was 6 a m Eastern time that the MLB MLB season officially kicked off and like I said earlier I was stuck away in bed no offense but I love baseball but I was not getting up for that game what they should have done so I I am on the East Coast I live right I live in southern New Jersey right outside of Philly so Tokyo Japan doing the math it’s 13 hours ahead of us if I was the commissioner I would have done this series over the weekend I would have had them you know play like at 11 a m or noon Tokyo time on Saturday and Sunday at least for us East Coasters that mean the game would have started at either eleven PM or ten PM and I would have been okay with that but more outside of us like the East Coast bias people Dodgers fans would have been able to watch the game at seven PM or eight PM game time and the Cubs fans would have been able to watch the game at nine PM or ten PM and they just in you know that’s a I feel that’s you know kind of like a slight to them not being able to watch their favorite teams unless they’re getting up at the crack at crack at the dawn to be to be able to watch to see their uh favorite teams kick off the season yeah you know I will say first us hard working Americans who have to wake up early in the morning we’re already up in 11 we’re already up in first pitch but now I I think I really don’t enjoy taking MLB side here in anything but I’m going to here congrats to Rob Banfred and all 30 MLB honors I’m defending you which state you’re already on this podcast I think for them this is just all about the money being made in Japan and the opportunity is kind of have that product on display grow the game international we’ve seen this with NFL and obviously baseball’s already big in Japan as it is but MLB wants an even bigger imprint there and so then for them it’s just about what matters is what time what’s convenient to the people in Japan what and this was the best time obviously the crowd was sold out despite the sick despite the high ticket prices so kind of work out and for whether you’re on the East Coast you know if you want to get up early for it everyone was like hey it’s whatever Fox isn’t too big on the ratings anyway I mean what else are people gonna watch at 6 in the morning and for the West Coast the other volcanic people I sleep anyway so I think this was a rare instance where MLB doesn’t necessarily care about the ratings it was all about growing the game internationally and making all that nice stadium revenue that they got out of us cause again we’re gonna see that team it’s 10 first pitch I’m just saying I mean I I totally get get grow in the game I’m all obviously I’m all four I think it’s you know I’m I’m totally fine with them opening the games over overseas in Asia overseas you know in Japan and South Korea I think I think that’s great you know helps you know the growth but for somebody who is a baseball fan I would I would you know would rather see it at 10 or 11 o’clock at night for first pitch would be like watching my Phillies while you know while they’re out on the West Coast you know instead of to the 5 or 6 a m in the morning that’s all I’m saying that’s all I’m saying I value my sleep too much to get up that early you know value too much just can’t do it there anyway we are moving on because today Matt Johnson posted his MLB predictions for 2025 on sports.com it’s a website after this podcast is over to go check it out that who did you have on your predictions list yes you know figured what better times than the first fish baseball season also have some award predictions and yes there are some Dodgers in here haha not forgive well my picks cause hey we want people go check it out who knows maybe maybe I picked the player from your favorite team I’ll just say oh oh there’s some East Coast there’s some West Coast there’s a little little small market loving there too I’m just gonna be some Joe Buck bias yeah yeah and I can’t believe I’m saying this but a team who has two representatives on my app preseason MLB Awards ballot is the Boston Red Sox really I just I’m feeling this year with Boston you know this is the actually ownership Fenway Sports Group went in first time being aggressive on the trade market with spending money for the first time in what felt like decades really was only been a few years but so was cyan Mr Garrett their big trade acquisition this off season it just it’s a situation where look if you look his numbers from last year obviously he had the highest strikeout rate in the league his era was in the threes but his skills independent era was even lower and even if he has a higher era facing teams like the Yankees you know pitching in Fenway Park he’s gonna have double digit wins could push for upwards of 15 so if you’re gonna have a guy with 200+ strikeouts maybe leading leading strikeout rate low era 3.1 maybe sub maybe just under three and with all those ones I think you can be the ALCI award winner in the field that I don’t think is particularly strong obstacle is out for the year already and speaking of those Red Sox my ale manager of the award Alex Cora just again this is the team that I think is gonna win Dale East and I think there’s gonna be a 10 win improvement and we have a big market team 10 win improvement winning one of the most notable recognized visions in baseball maybe even finishing with the best record in the American League for me Cor is the guy he finally has the talent that he hasn’t necessarily had in previous years on the NL side there’s a little Dodgers love here Siam word given to Blake Snail oh okay cause if you look at what he did last season he had the injuries again I’ve talked for in last podcast about how with some of these guys who late signings you know they get they just start slow he spent two he had two cents on the aisle it wasn’t really himself until July but once he was back he was phenomenal sub 1.5 era holding opponents to nearly a 100 batting average to suburd numbers he’s not gonna be as dumb as that you just can’t be that great over full season but if the winds he’s gonna rack up the strikeouts he’ll rack up and that Dodgers rotation it’s real it’s pretty even like maybe there’s a risk of guys splitting votes but I think snow will be the standout few others all highlight and our work of the year Dylan Cruz just I think you’re gonna have potentially 50 combined storm bases and home runs on a small smaller team that you know they don’t they’re not gonna get to love nationally but I think he’s still can be a guy who just the numbers are gonna pop up stat sheet and you know the slow rise the nationals probably help them with the award also finally I’ll close it up again I wanna leave MVP other stuff like that for people go check out but come back player of the Year Al is gonna be shame clan and return from Tony John Tommy John surgery which had in August 2023 he’s already he’s showing the same stuff this spring maybe it’s not gonna be as consistently crisp in his first full season back waiting for Comeback Player of the year it’s a nice benchmark form to reach where he doesn’t have to be be a Saiyan middle pitcher but he was seen him be able to do in the past but you can just be an all star guy leading the race rotation that I’ll get get it for him and I’ll come back to the year is gonna be a coonia for me he’s gonna miss the first month of season okay maybe he doesn’t like the all star team because of it maybe he’s not gonna be an MVP conversation because of it but this is just comeback player of the year it’s gonna be a second return from a torn ACL he’s approaching different this time last time out when it happened they were pretty aggressive with his you know trying to get him back on the field this time they’re being more cautious or trying to make sure he’s more well rounded more athletic and just he doesn’t have as many setbacks or issues selling for him especially being an everyday player that’ll get him come back below the year and those are just a few of my awards picks but I’m curious to hear yours and here is mine drum roll please starting off American League MVP Baltimore Orioles shortstop Gunner Henderson last year finished fourth in MVP voting 37 home runs 31 doubles 180 run scored 8 93 Ops 1 59 OPS+ meaning he was a 59% better hitter than the league average hitter and he had a Baseball Reference war of 9.1 he is only 23 years old and he’s only going to get better he is my pick for Al MVP this year NL MVP I mean Shohei I mean yeah the number speak for themselves yeah I there’s no way you know unless he misses like half the season and listen what’s Johan there’s only we know we you and I both know it wasn’t Repeat MVP winners in the same again show hey repeated a L&L back to back yep with the repeat in the same league happens rarely in fact only happened twice in the National League since 2001 being bombs and poo Wolves but with them tiny you you know as we know he’s gonna have the office numbers and even if there’s voter fatigue that’s like we’ve seen him do this before put great now the pitching’s back yeah that’s gonna be more out of value for picture his picture might be delayed a little bit cause it kind of like slowed down the pitching rehab but he’ll be back on now at some point this season yeah yeah and then we’ll move on to the National League Cy Young Award winner obviously my favoriteism might be putting a little bias on here but it will finally be the year Zach Wheeler with National League Cy Young finished second last year finished second in 2021 which honestly he should have won in 2021 he was also six in NLC Young voting in 2023 Last year LED the National League in lowest whip and lowest hits per nine and over five years with the Phillies he has a 2.94 era 1 40 two ERA+ 2.96 fifth 899 strikeouts in a 25.4 B war now moving on to my American League Cy Young Kansas City Royals lefty Cole Reagans yeah I said it Cole Reagans finished fourth in Al SA Young Booty last year ranked fourth in fifth rate last year at 32% and ninth in strikeout rate at 29.3% and an AO leading 10.8 strikeouts per 9 20 24 with a 3.14 E R a 1 35 E R A+ and a 2 point and a 2.99 fifth with a 5.0 B war he is going to explode this season he is gonna carry that royal staff as they make another post season run now moving on to my National League Comeback Player of the year it will not be Ronald Acuna Jr from the Atlanta Braves it will be Cincinnati Red second baseman Matt Mcclain who missed all of 2024 after undergoing soldier surgery following injury and spring training and then during rehab he suffered a ribricade stress reaction but in his first season in 2023 played 89 games had 16 home runs 23 doubles 65 run scored 8 64 Ops 1 27 OPS+ and a 3.6 B war expect him to be your NL Comeback Player of the year now AOL Comeback Player of the Year Texas Rangers starter Jacob degrom he’s only made nine starts for the Rangers the past two seasons obviously he went down with Tommy John surgery in 2023 he came back only for three starts last year and late in the season if he can stay healthy he can return to his dominant form he will easily win a all Comeback Player of the year and don’t see be surprised if he if he’s also in the side young hunt as well wow yes now moving on to my Al and NL Rookie of the Years Al Rookie of the Year Christian Campbell for the Boston Red Sox with Rafael Denvers would be good moving over to designated hitter now and with Alex Bregman playing third base Christian Campbell will be the Red Sox starting second baseman on Opening Day and he’s just been rising through the minor league ranks and the Red Sox system last year he played across three minor league levels and high high single a double a and Triple a over that span he had a 9 97 Ops with 20 home runs 94 runs scored 24 stolen bases 74 walks 103 strikeouts um in 142 hits he’s gonna take the league by storm and my NL Rookie of the year even though he did not have a great game today uh is Chicago Cubs third baseman Matt Shaw was also been riding through the ranks he played about double and Triple a last year and had eight 67 Ops with 21 home runs 19 doubles and 78 run scores those are my picks and I’m sticking by them but I have the right to change them at any point during season there you go yes there’s multiple things there but you saying if the ground stays healthy good luck yeah that’s a big F that’s a very big F that’s a that’s a big one yeah yeah but I mean so I like I think the right now the Texas Rangers are hurting in the rotation department because two of their starters are currently out it will be offered a foreseeable future but they do have the young guy stepping up with Kumar you know Kumar rocker Jack Lighters actually been pitching well during spring training so we’ll see me you know how that will translate into the regular season because like that’s crazy he’s been kind of a bust so far yes and wouldn’t that be kind of fun though to have the Vanderbilt boys back together again that Rangers rotation it will be yeah I mean at least for the Rangers would be oh they would they would like that it would yeah but now let’s move on to Matt’s favorite part of our show as we do well hey I will remind everyone we’re both men Matt so who whose favorite is it you Matt okay Matt Johnson’s favorite immaculate grid and today’s immaculate grid for those who are listening to us on a podcast we have the uh blocks of Braves and Pirates Braves and Nationals Braves in the sub 3.00 E R a season then we got Diamondbacks Pirates Diamondbacks Nationals Diamondbacks sub 3.00 E R a season and then last we got 200+ K season for the Pirates for the nationals and 200+ K season with the sub 3.00 E R a season are we ready to proceed MJ let’s pull up a grid and for everyone enjoying this we will I will note the 200 k season in the sub 3 era can be can occur in separate seasons as long as it’s done by the same guy so we need someone get it right and you’re like wait he didn’t do that the same year I would have heard it is it can be two separate seasons all right I’m gonna start off with the Braves and Pirates I’m going Denny Nagle 3% all right I’m gonna go with the 200 case in the sub 3 era with oh okay Barry Zito Barry Zito oh nice one let’s see 200K season pitching and nationals know I’m going with Jim Ken Hill cause of the Montreal Expos let’s hope you’re right ah oh no no no no ladies and gentlemen you can swings in a mess while we go with my Pikachu Gonzalez I would just like to remind people that I’m still batting batting here so we’re where are you going against all I forgot to take the time for this screw this all right sub 3 euro season now for the Braves let’s go with now there’s a copy out here this can be one inning this can be anything yeah it can be a dude who just pitched in one game this is why I love this category Charlie Colberson Charlie Colberson oh point two % oh man alright Diamondbacks and Pirates I’m going J Bell even though that’s probably gonna be a big one 18% whatever this can go to hell alright um I’m gonna go sub 3 erra for the Arizona Diamondbacks he only had a brief run I mean he he had a longer run but he only had a good Taijuan Taiwan Walker hahaha wow did you look this up beforehand no I just remember Tate I remembered cause Taeyon had on a fantasy team and he severely disappointed me after acquiring him for his good season alright let’s see she do something good for Braves gnats slash Expos oh man let’s take ones we know we can get first let’s go pirates 2 hundred k season Derrick Cole would be an easy layup um what about Doug Dreback yeah it’s it’s I’ll put this one on your shoulders so cause I was gonna take the left you can swim with the fences ah oh no ladies and gentlemen ah this is why you settle sometimes oh I’m so bad so we got one left um our score doesn’t really matter at this point so our our score is an abomination of humanity right now yeah let’s just go um so I guess pirates and brave pirates 200 k or national Braves let’s go Josh Bell for the nationals and the Diamondbacks oh there’s two Josh Bells good Lord 229 is our rarity score 2 Miss squares this is this is an all time yeah I’m gonna stop sharing that because that’s that’s uh that’s making me sad well you were I would say so we talked about last week that we were in spring training farm before and we kind of snapped out of it so this was our this was our Tokyo series where it’s like we listen we had we had some good at that and then we were reminded to still spring training so maybe we got a little out of our bridges too much but it happens yeah I am sad I am sad I will say I’m happy you picked some of the team teams because stats I’m more for but team team is where I struggle so yeah I kind of set you up to fail there but that’s that’s what a good co host does makes co host look worse thanks for embarrassing me mad in front of a national audience you’re welcome actually worldwide audience we’re on YouTube oh man well maybe I’ll be back next week I don’t know at this point after that terrible rarity score but anyway thanks again for joining the the furls uh we’ll be back next week hopefully with a new guest and maybe a new cohost to replace me after that terrible terrible terrible Barry Zeto or Gio Gonzalez if you’re available you know you can replace Higgins but until then to Barry Zeto to tell you all Walker to any of these guys to Gonzalez or to our listeners like subscribe comment all of those things YouTube any platform that you are listening to us or watching us on hit the like or subscribe if not press those buttons if not for the both of us at least for me cause yeah do it for him Jay yeah there you go do it for him Jay alright thanks for watching everybody see you all next week
