it your best Give your best self to those around you Share with those in need And just enjoy the culture that you’re so blessed to be a part of Everything around you says enjoy Be part of it Dive in and just do your best and leave an impact wherever you can Just enjoy Play baseball And we love we love you Experience your life Yes It is an honor to be here and an honor to be part of this team Thank you Heck don’t hit Sorry [Music] Uh I mean it’s really nice Um I mean it’s so weird I talk to them every day I talk to them all the time Um especially on FaceTime So I see their face and I hear their voices but um I just I miss them a ton Not one specific time you know Um I think the special thing about them is it was constant you know my entire life Um they never forced me to do anything or be anything Um you know my dad could have tried to make me into a lawyer or a doctor or um an engineer and um I got to a point where I told them I wanted to be a baseball player and they said cool let’s do it Um you know they they’ve always supported me and they’ve always wanted what I’ve wanted Um and I can’t thank them enough for that [Music] What educational philosophy do you have while raising John well um both of us are raised by educators My parents were educators and my father-in-law was an educator as well So education is a number one priority in our family Um we are very serious about it Uh we put education first before sports Um John had a lot of interest in in activities and sports activities as did our other children Um but we made sure that he um did his work first enjoyed school enjoyed his interest and then made room that made room for sports Excellent I like to add that um John is a very good student um and learning was very easy for him So he would he would go in and just absorb lots everything that he learned Um we would make room for uh exploration If he wanted to study something a little further like taking um uh classes in the summer he did that because the community allow allowed that They had uh community colleges that had extra classes So we we did those things for our children when they were small So um because John because school is easy he can sit and listen and he can remember He he processes fast right he played basketball he played football he played baseball he was in the band he played drums in the band Oh really and he was very close to high in his class and his grade point average was really high All all of those things he he’s just it’s easy for him Not not for not for me but it was easy for him What do you think made him feel easy for everything i don’t know I think I think his mother did I think I think she did a good job um making room for his interest So he never felt pressured from us We we don’t pressure we didn’t pressure our children You have to be a lawyer you have to be a doctor We didn’t do that We our approach was you have to learn and find what you’re passionate about Find the thing that you love to do and you’ll be good at it And so he was always just curious Everything like if you tell John something he will he will remember it He’s very good He has very good memory My dad always told me if you’re going to do something do it to the best of your ability you know Um if you’re going to do something do it 100% Um and my mom every time I went to a practice or game or try out or um anything um it was play like they’re picking the MVP Uh what do you think was the turning point for John as a baseball player uh as a baseball player I I don’t know I think I think at Rice University um he suffered an injury and I think it caused him to to take his body more seriously to really focus on developing his skill but protecting his body So maybe Rice University was the turning point for baseball I agree Um I remember that time and um I’m trying not to get too English but I remember that time because I saw him change I saw him transform Um and we’re always transforming into better people right so I saw him change I saw him while injured um put on a uniform every day cheering on his teammates taking stats talking to the coaches making sure that he was in line with what they were doing Even though he couldn’t perform he did what he could Even injured I saw that happen And then after that he was he changed He went to play baseball in the summer with the a summer team And I saw him grow there I saw that he got stronger And then when he um decided to when he came back for the next season he did extremely well He was focused He um then made the decision that if uh he had an opportunity to play professionally he would And that’s where we had to trust him because we saw that he was on the right path and we trusted him to leave college one year early and um promised to make he’s going to go back and finish in the end That’s he promised me that because we want to make sure he gets his degree But he left his junior year to pursue baseball and look at us today It was the greatest decision I’m so glad that he um he showed us who he was through his work and his hard work is paying off It’s a lot Sorry Um mom and dad um I love you Um want to thank you for always supporting me Um always having my back always leading me in the right direction Um I miss you Um I’m excited to see y’all when you come back out here Um what’s that what’s that what’s that i love Japan [Music]
