Before you clicked on this video, did you know about PASSONI? Cycling is about sports, health, and environmental friendliness, and it can also be about romance. It means something different to everyone, but for me, it’s a story that spans 25 years. Since fifth grade, when my dad bought me my first Giant bike,
I was so excited I couldn’t sleep. Riding a 12-speed Giant bike around the island in college, I felt so cool and enjoyed the ride. And then, well… Having a dad who loves bikes, I’ve ridden special editions like Colnago ft. Ferrari, Pinarello’s F10, and various Bromptons in different colors.
I’ve ridden them all at least a few times. Yeah, I’m indeed very fortunate to have ridden so many bikes at a young age. But unfortunately, or rather regretfully, since none of these were my bikes, I never really thought about truly feeling and experiencing these bikes.
So, if you ask me about the differences between these bikes, I could only give a superficial answer: Each bike looks cool when ridden. Even now, after starting work, riding my dad’s favorite PASSONI is the same. It’s still the same. So, back to the initial question of the video, do you know PASSONI?
I can only say I know, I know it’s the king of titanium bikes, and it’s expensive, with superb polishing and welding techniques. But I don’t really know what makes this brand stand out. So, this time I decided to take my team 10,000 kilometers away to the outskirts of Milan, to the PASSONI factory,
To find the answer. Ah, do you want to come and help? Right, instead of blindly following a famous brand, I prefer to understand the story behind a brand. After a 15-hour flight, we finally arrived at Milan, long unseen. My back almost broke. Because in this era full of dazzling products,
There will always be something better, or products with a higher cost-performance ratio. Now heading to Milan for the first plate of Italian pasta. But I believe, the values and spirit behind a brand are what truly resonate with people. Should we take the shot? No way, no way. This time, I’m honored
To receive an invitation from the PASSONI. Although we’re not a bike shop, and we’ve never sold bikes, we still have this opportunity to get up close with this top-notch brand. But before the official visit to PASSONI, we’ve reserved a whole day to truly immerse ourselves in the artistic ambiance of Milan’s fashion.
Did you know, many people think of eating pizza in Italy, or having pasta, but for me, this trip, I have to eat gelato for every meal. PASSONI factory is about 20 minutes drive from Milan, located in Monza. Upon arriving at PASSONI, my first question was, Why in this era where everything must be fast and mass-produced, do they still cherish the craftsmanship of pure titanium? Before this, only some artists or technicians made a few titanium bikes for themselves or their friends. But PASSONI is the real deal in seriously researching how to make titanium bikes.
It’s the oldest in the field. Through Matteo’s introduction, I realized that my initial impression was just knowing that bikes made of titanium are comfortable, but through his explanation, like using a combination of carbon and titanium, different materials, shapes, and tube diameters, titanium can offer comfortable bikes, more race-oriented bikes, and more versatile bikes,
All while maintaining titanium’s comfort. Titanium really involves a lot of knowledge, like the head tube here, the bottom bracket, and the rear triangle ends, are made of the hardest Grade 5 titanium, ensuring the strongest frame strength in these three parts, with the highest stability. Then, the top and down tubes use this deformation,
Top and down tubes, are made of Grade 9 material, which has the highest elasticity, offering the best comfort when riding. But for the down tube, to ensure the frame’s stability, they used this deformation, you see, the front is straight, and the back is flat, ensuring the strongest stability when riding.
In the early days of PASSONI, when titanium was hard to obtain, they had to shape a piece of titanium into a round shape, and the welding had to be done at the bottom. Look at this early PASSONI, a classic PASSONI. When touching it, you can feel the welding marks,
Although they’ve been polished to nearly invisible. The cost of making it was three times more expensive than the top frames of that era. So you can see PASSONI’s passion for titanium. This frame, made in 2001, combines carbon fiber and titanium. They used carbon for the seat tube, head tube, bottom bracket,
And rear triangle. Years later, their combination of titanium and carbon evolved to this. I truly find this material and combination incredibly beautiful. PASSONI’s aesthetic in combining different materials is unmatched. This is also a later model they released, leading to this (XXTI) model. And finally, this year’s upcoming model, which is a prototype,
Also combines carbon and titanium, and it’s absolutely stunning. You can truly feel PASSONI’s dedication and their craftsman spirit. They incorporated carbon fiber seat tubes into this head tube and bottom bracket and the rear triangle also uses carbon material Years later, their combination of titanium and carbon evolved into this
I truly think this material This combination, the fusion of different materials, is incredibly beautiful In terms of aesthetics, the fusion of different materials I believe is unrivaled by anyone else And this was also a model they launched a few years later Leading up to this one (XXTI)
Then to this year’s upcoming model It’s also a combination of carbon and titanium which is just a prototype It’s also a combination of carbon and titanium Absolutely stunning You can truly feel PASSONI’s dedication and their craftsman spirit He mentioned that there was a thief before who drilled a hole here
And then stole their bikes So now what they are making resembles a bank vault PASSONI from 30 years ago And like these intricate details were all made by the old technician from earlier Bikes waiting for parts are all placed here Look how tidy their workshop is They spend all their time building bikes
Because it really, really takes a lot of work to build their bikes And he also mentioned that each wooden box contains a customer’s bike And even when they are being made or waiting for some parts to arrive at these boxes Actually, there are roughly just ten to twenty bikes
Not many, really not many I think their production is not about mass-producing bikes But each bike is made with great care in crafting for you Besides visiting PASSONI this time We got a great opportunity Today a very important customer is coming Someone who already owns 9 PASSONIs
And today he’s coming to buy another one From first acquaintance to trust and then to long-term companionship I deeply understand Why Mr. Valued Customer would want to own 10 PASSONI bikes Because this is probably what love is You see that European street lamp Are they all using internal routing All using internal routing
You know, the bike should use full internal routing Now we’ve come to our pocket list This shop is amazing It’s their You see, we’re eating And the aunties next to us are rolling noodles for us These are handmade noodles Handmade pasta Today’s second ice cream The second and third ice creams
Left Green Dragon, Right White Tiger Good morning The weather is much better today Starting the second day of the visit Today will be exciting Today PASSONI will show us How a bike is produced from scratch Why their titanium bike is so incredible Starting from the initial design To communication with customers
And then how the whole bike is made Every step will be explained to us one by one Really looking forward to it, let’s go This master craftsman He has been working at PASSONI for 30 years We arrived at 8:55 in the morning We thought we were the first to arrive
Because they start work at 9:30 But the master craftsman was already there Already having 30 years of experience And also the first one to arrive at the company Just to polish the bike To use such finesse on the corners Requires so much material And all by hand As mentioned just now This polishing process requires At least 35 hours to complete this task Very, very fine This is a very troublesome thing To make a frame look so beautiful
Really has to rely on hands This is where he excels I really can’t imagine Spending my whole day doing this This is the sandblasting machine Then for spraying logos and such To matte it The appearance before and after spraying is very different This welder He has been welding for 30 years
To achieve such craftsmanship As mentioned earlier A good welder Requires a very, very long time This is why This handmade PASSONI is so difficult I want to try welding Directly try welding PASSONI’s tubing Watch out, watch out This welder Is willing to let me weld PASSONI’s tubing So
The customer who buys this bike should be aware That’s about it Ah, much prettier Let me show you my work When I first started welding, I couldn’t grasp the knack My hands would shake And I didn’t support it well Then after their explanation This part is newly welded At least much prettier
Today is my first day working at PASSONI Look, this is my first day as a welder This is their 30-year welder 30-year welder One-day welder “Between a large company and a small studio” This is the sexiest proportion I saw during this visit to PASSONI Rather than technicians or technical staff
They prefer to see themselves as Passionate artists Just like how I experienced their warm fitting for ordering a new bike From the initial idea to discussion and then to implementation PASSONI always gets to know every cyclist Talks with you Understands your riding habits And future riding plans
Then lets each experienced artist at every workstation Craft it for us with care Data is dead Like cold metal But through each master’s careful polishing You really Can really trust this bike It’s a dream It’s taste Not following trends Nor will it be eliminated by fashion And perhaps that’s why
So many cyclists say You can’t truly own a PASSONI But you can keep it for the next generation As for the day after Fitting To ride PASSONI in the fairyland at the foot of the Italian Alps LAKE COMO That’s a story for the next episode
