I spee for okay No I’m recording oh you’re recording oh follow Freddy okay ner now now I am nervous seems like every day before I left I was getting [Applause] Look [Applause] Usually I have something to say I don’t even know I don’t even know what to say right now what a surprise man no problem smells great we’re going to add one more um we’ve got two sets of uniforms to wear at home and two for the road so a lot of them
Here the inside of the ball [Applause] right hey geni how it’s been it’s been too long just it just feels like you know it’s one of those things that as time passes it doesn’t in some ways it doesn’t feel that long but then you start thinking back all things that have
Happened since um I guess 2018 um A lot’s changed but it’s it was this was one of the best surprises I’ve had in a long time thanks for saying that am I different how I look look a little older I mean I mean as from as soon as he came
Around the the corner of the car it was I mean knew exactly you know it was that was that was really really a neat surprise with be able to I wasn’t expecting I had no idea what I was uh what you guys were taking me out for feel different I feel everything
Hurts a little bit more little slower moving if you come to I would that is actually one of the things I would love to be able I would actually love to be able to do and just in Japan in general um but specifically coming back to Cai that was uh even even
When I came back and played in Tokyo um found a couple of reasons here or there to to get back up to Cai I think it was I mean as you guys can see here where we live is a little bit not as big of a city and
Um kind of a smaller town feel and I always liked Cai because it was um is I mean still a really big city but it was a little bit more the the speed of what I’m what makes me comfortable I guess so um and all the people were just you know
They everybody was so good to to me and my kids and my my wife and we just had a great time a lot of really really good memories of Syai that that that’s really neat to be able to hear that you know what we did that year people still remember I think um unfortunately I didn’t realize how big of a an event it was I knew the baseball part of it but I didn’t realize
How important it was to the whole region until after we won and the short period of time from the end of the Japan series to me going home some of the the people not Rel not not connected to the team but just around the city and you know
Somebody working at a restaurant or whatever um some of the thing the conversations that they would come and tell us about how important it was I wish I would have realized maybe while we were going through it really what a big deal it was um but in knowing that
Now and to hear people still care about it and uh it means something to him it’s it’s pretty neat to be a small part of you know a major event and the um you know in all the tohoku’s you know history it was pretty cool to be a part
Of you know you know I I think um I was at a point in my career where uh I knew I could still play at a really high level I knew I could still play in the major leagues um but it was well it was around this time of year
Um that the winter meetings were happening and everything and the opportunity that I thought might be there for me to continue playing weren’t coming as quickly as I was hoping for um and then I had it kind of happened out of nowhere that I got approached about the idea of going to Japan
Um and there was a two teams that were talking to me about coming and actually I don’t know if I’ve ever told this part of the story to anybody um the day that I finally made my decision I hadn’t slept very much because of the time change
So when people were awake and working in Japan it was middle of the night and so uh walking around my neighborhood and I decided that I was ready to go to Japan well I still had to decide which team and on on and it helped that AJ was coming already and we
Had just played together U in New York I didn’t know him very well but at least I knew somebody that was going and um the actual the true story is I told my wife and my agent that I was going to sign with the other
Team and I got my agent on the phone and I said I’m going to sign with this other team and um I don’t know what it was but they knew I didn’t didn’t mean it and um the the reason I was doing is I felt
Like for me to go over there and take my family that far I probably needed to go to the team that was going to pay me the most money and I didn’t want to go at that time I didn’t want to go to that team and um I think my wife realized I
Was just saying that to do what was probably right for her and um my agent to his credit said call me back when you actually mean it and he hung up the phone and my wife said I don’t care which team you go to go where your heart tells you to go and
Then it was and and the I think the reason why I wanted to come play incendi was it was the the way that I understood the team and it ended up being true was pretty young had to that point not had a tremendous amount of success and I
Really felt like with me being able to come over and Andrew everything else that we could really make a big difference and U that was I think the part that really appealed to me the most and then once we once I got there I couldn’t have imagine how much talent we
Had um and it was I mean it really was it was the it was the best decision that I that I really made ever I was I was I was really nervous when I went um as soon as I had signed or whatever then all of a sudden you start
Hearing stories about you know hos and all of this I’m like what am I what am I getting into you know and it really took until uh we were over in uh what was the island for spring training Kim yeah Kim I knew I had that I was going to mess it up
And the first uh like scrimmage we played against each other or ourselves and norimoto was pitching and I’ll never forget AJ came back to the Dugout and he was like who was that and we started talking about it and we thought he was somebody that had been there for five
Years and then to find out that it was his you know his rookie season um and then we started to see you know the other guys that you know position players and stuff like we knew Cass um but then you know hrao was going to try for the WBC team that year who
Was uh hiji yeah and he was he was going to try for that he came back to us and then uh and then we had this left-handed first baseman that was started playing and couldn’t get him out and just kept getting hits in the in the uh spring
Training and didn’t take long for us to realize we were going to be pretty good A little little bit short you had a not real fast there’s a there’s a there’s a honestly there’s there’s a few of them um I think I don’t know if necessarily
Game but I think the um there there was one game particular we were playing uh soft Bank close to the end of the season and it was like they were I think they finished in third place I believe and it was the first chance we had to kind of
Eliminate one of the teams that was going to probably make the playoffs from first place and then when we finally went to uh and played against seu and we were able to clinch the title th those are probably the ones that really stand out especially I forget how the game
Exactly played out but I remember AJ I think hit a big triple which was maybe the first time he’s had a triple and I don’t know how long and almost became an inside and we because we were down and he got that big hit to to put us back either tide or ahead
Um but that kind of I think it was like I think all that happened within like a week I feel like of of each other that whole week was when I really one of the ones I really remember obviously the the whole playoffs and the climax series and
Japan series but uh during the regular season those were probably the ones aside from the very first game I thought I remember I struck out like three or four times and was wondering what was going on you know I think if you look back like I obvious I mean obviously we have
Tanaka who that was every time he pitched it was I mean it was a win right um but I think that’s the obvious one but when you start looking back on it we had it was it felt like it was every night there was somebody different um
You know out of nowhere Shima would get some big hits or you know Genji or or fueta or some you know was always a different person I think that was one um you hold yeah yeah and I think that that was one of it one part of it the other part of
It and I don’t I hope this comes off as the way I mean it to and not okay in a bad way um I think a lot of credit goes to the whole organization and I think hinan as well because we had you know uh
Saan Cass and me and AJ who had all had a lot of time here in the major leagues and we were the older guys for the most part and then but we had so many young players that I think the organization and the coaching staff
Allowed us to bring a little bit of that young kind of spirit and energy not to say that they didn’t work incredibly hard and weren’t incredibly disciplined and do things the right way but I think he allowed us and encouraged us to have some personality and some fun while we did
It’s a little bit of a tough question but I think I think the I I think any any organization that has success for a long period of time I think they really have to know what their identity is and what are things that we are going to do
Well if and it may not be the same things that are important to a different organization but what makes us different what makes us us unique and how can we uh use our strengths the best and in that how do we identify pieces whether it be in the front office or coaching
Staff or players or whatever that fit what’s important to us in our identity this is I thank you he said first off thank you thank you for taking this time you know there’s I I just can’t believe that you’re you came all the way over here U to do this
And not just because you’re sitting here but you would be amazed to know how many times I actually use you as an example when I’m talking to people about specifically about hitting um and I would love to be able to one day come and visit you and do this in Japan and
Um you know I do looking at all this stuff U and thinking back um a lot of lot of really really good memories you know just looking at some of these pictures and stuff you know get the the Goosebumps thinking about what it was like to to to be in
The in that Stadium on that night and it was the perfect way to wrap up a just a really special season um so I appreciate you coming and I’m sad that you’re not I’m sad that you’re not playing anymore just because I always respected and liked um the way you played and liked
Watching it um but I’m excited that you’re still at least going to be you know part of the future I give you I’ll give you an a for your first time doing an interview thank thank you Thank Come on On winter meetings Nashville 2023 here we Go Spee Spee C [Applause] [Applause] for Great to see you it doesn’t no long time since we played together but but yeah it’s always great to see Genji I’m happy as well you don’t look Yeah it was it was um I was always fascinated with Japanese baseball I was Locker mates with Hideki Matsui and would pick his mind a little bit on the game and K gawa as well so I asked them a lot about the game and how
It was played and and um it just always fascinated me it’s something I wanted to do I’d always heard how great the fans and the Japanese people as a whole are so I really wanted to experience that with my family these things that came to know now you come you know you actually
Come to Cai it far exceeded all of my expectations and um ideas of the game I was not expecting you know such a warm um welcoming and embrac by the fans in the front office and the players and um the my teammates were incredible the whole time it’s something I’ve always cherished and
Will cherish and uh something I I truly miss that’s great and you know the feeling is mutual and and um I truly cherish that time of my life and my family I got to experience with my family and my sons and and just the the people of Japan just
Incredible was and then thank you He is one of the best managers I played for ever um I thought the man was pure class he was hard noos but he was fair um he treated us foreign players with a ton of respect and and made us feel welcomed and like we were truly
Part of of something and and you know as a manager he’s you you come across these guys every now and then and he was one of those guys that I would do anything for I would have done I would have run through a wall for the guy um true true
Leader he was another he was another hard-nose um coach old school guy I really liked um noran and in his knowledge of of catching and and and handling and pitching staff um I thought he was an incredible coach as well um good leader and and it was an
Honor to play for him as well you know knowing what he did as a player was was something special came in was spring training when you were you know when Numan was here the first year was that Kima it was yes remember those meetings it was really really long
Long long meetings uh long days he got the most out of out of our team I mean we made it to the playoffs that year um and he he was another guy that inspired guys and and got the most out of Them long meetings long days lots of work is Marty you know I have a lot of respect for Marty um did a lot of good things as a manager here in in Japan um tried to um change the culture a little bit and bring more American
Style baseball um you know and and and I I I understood it um you know I know a lot of the guys respected and like the new the new method um Marty’s Marty’s a great guy haven’t talked to him in a while but uh for a while him and I
Stayed didn’t touch but another good Man and I remember Marty loved Genji they him and Shima both um he Marty would talk to me about those two guys quite often and and thought they both had a very bright future and and he wanted them to lead and and they did and then
These guys became leaders and and um you know had incredible careers 2011 Earth yeah it was it was it was devastating I mean that’s that’s an statement but it was um you know it was it was it was an eye opening experience how incredible the Japanese people are to be honest with
You you know I saw people come together as as one and you know you see love and you see the quality of the you know the the the soul and and people um it was it was incredible um seeing that and witnessing that and watching them you know
Everybody come together it didn’t matter who you were um color your skin where you’re from but to see the Japanese people come together the way they did and repair it was uh it was special yeah it wasn’t you know it wasn’t about baseball anymore I mean it
Was and we wanted to win and we wanted to give the fans something to you know some Joy um you know we gave it our best that year we didn’t you know we came up a little short but um you know it was it was it was a it
Was a it was a very difficult time Something that doesn’t surprise me for Genji honestly I think Genji is an incredible human being um again it’s something I I’m not shocked by this I see Genji always waned to get back I mean he was a great teammate is a great teammate um you know
So this not in any way does this surprise me well I think everybody you know starts with hosino hosino son I think he he was an incredible leader as I said earlier um I think it started with him um you know when you go down this
Line of of leaders Genji and Shima and Tanaka winning 25 games I mean there was a lot of things went right um it was a good group we spent time together off the field foreign guys mesed well with the with the with the Japanese guys and
Um we were just a team we did everything together we had fun together we fought together we played together we did everything and I think that’s what what it is is and and um but again I think it comes from the top and oino um trus in us and pushing us and
And um being there with us you know and again the man the man was a true leader still haunts me still haunts me to the everybody still remembers I think yeah it was real you know um we had we had your paddle up I think that’s that’s an incredible
Hire by the team I think putting him in that spot I think he’s a leader he knows um adversity he’s he is a winner um but his demeanor I think his demeanor is going to be great for for the young guys the old guys and everybody in
Between I think his knowledge of of pitching and and um just just who he is I think it’s going to be it’s going to be a good Fit absolutely and and uh hopefully we can start winning again and and uh do this for the fans because they are the best and and um you know I truly miss the fans as well we can’t we can’t we can’t do this without the fans the fans are are what
This is about and it’s why we do it it’s why we come to the park it’s why we get excited um as a former player I miss that’s what I miss is is that I miss the fans I miss the teammates but um you know we really need the fans and and uh
You know to continue to support and and they’re the reason why we win we back in 2013 and I’m going back a little bit but 2013 I truly feel that was one of the reasons we won is because every night the the um the stadium was packed and we
Had a home field advantage and that’s what we need to to get back to but the fans are are the best thank you from the bottom of my heart to all the fans and the organization and and um truly miss them thank you thank you g good career my Man Time hey Long Lally tournament here [Applause] 11 A well I mean the thing is that you play for so long and you you learn so much you know you’re not you know you’re just not going to play and just play play play you’re going to learn every day so every day when I come to the field I’m
Trying to learn something you know if it’s probably my own players or the picture I’m going to face or somebody that we’re going to play against that is so good like you know let’s say we you know we facing aani I didn’t get a hit of aani
But you know I learned something from him you know by watching it so you’re trying to learn something every day and if you can learn something every day you’re going to make you’re going to end up being a b baseball player you know it
It can be I can be doing a lot of stuff it can be a week that I’m just setting the guy up you know and I’m going to see him you know I’m going see him next week week or a week from there and then I
Know already what I’m going to do thing is the the slight mistake that he can do is very small but if he make the mistake I need to execute you know so that’s how I look at it yeah because if if he make a speech I’m not going to hit it no
Matter what I mean I might pull it in play but I’m not going to pull it in play great great but you know if you make the mistake where I want him to be I need to take advantage of him for well I mean it’s just like you know
That’s why I was looking a lot of video and I was trying to you know talk with the heading coach and trying to look to see if what I can pick from somebody so I can make the adjustment as I go to it and um you know it’s all videos it’s
Videos that I wanted to look at and and you know we watch videos and and you make adjustments and you know all all this I couldn’t you know when I did all that I did I wouldn’t do it without him or without people that were sitting
Behind me hitting be you know in front of me so um it’s just little things that help you and you know I see what he does what approach he took on on a slider and or on a spit finger and I I you know I
Try to kind of get in the same pattern other them because we not same hitter we all different you know if I wanted to go there and be a 300 300 hitter and hit two home runs or five home runs yeah I can do that but I I’m I was there to
Produce power and that’s what I want do you know you you got you got to have the right people on the team you got to have you know guys that other players respect and obviously everybody respect each other but you have somebody that is there that can help guide and put people
In the right spot or tell them believe in the system to win and if you know if you have somebody just you know doing whatever they want to do and not tell the players believe in the system that I’m bringing in so we can win you’re not
Going to win so obviously you got to have the right right players you got to have you know the right coaching um you got to have everything right to win so if you don’t have those things you’re not going to win and um you know even
Since we won in in in uh 13 14 we struggled we struggled because you know we almost had the same team but we had to go get you know different foreigners all that you know they didn’t bite into the system what we wanted to do
And it it did not work and you know obviously losing losing losing the big big arm you know it don’t make it don’t make no sense so you know obviously you got to have the pitching you got to have guys that can catch the ball play defense and then after that everything work
Out it’s it’s it’s it’s it’s just the mind that you you go into the season you have to have everybody be 100% on board can have one person not be bo then you’re not going to you’re not going to succeed so you have to have everybody believe in the system so you can
Win I I’m going to Lim and say I want to be the manager I want I I I want I want I want to be there I want to make this team win and um you know if the opportunity is right I will go there
Because I have I love Cai I I have such a great time there and um you know the old people are so respectable so I I will go there I mean I I try to come there every time every time I can because first of all I like
Yakiniku I’m Miss s so um you know I just want to go back I want to go back and and and give back to you know to the to the to the town to the city because you know why are we there we BR so much joy because you know before that
Year the whole tsunami happened and everything started that we say that you know every home run or everyb that we had we donate money to the to the relief of of that and we we hit a lot we we had a lot of home runs we had a lot of yeah
We have a lot of every so a lot of money went to to to the relief so you know I want to just be back just to have people happy and and happy to be around again I I can’t wait to be there I can’t wait um you know it’s just it’s just
Such a joy you know I mean um like I say um you know went out there after a great career playing Major League Baseball and you know people think that you just go in there just to go I went there with a mindset what I wanted to do I wanted to
Win I wanted to play every day because I haven’t played every day for 5 years in the major league so prior to that so I went there I play every day so I felt so much joy of going to the field knowing that I’m playing everything like like I say you know
Before I have played for for five a year every day and going there and you know seeing people cheering for you every day when you get on the field and and trying to win um that brought me back into you know I I can do this I would love this
You know I mean not that I not love the game prior to that you know when I played for the those 13 years straight when you know every day I go to the FI it was a straight business and then after after I I you know I didn’t play every day after
That I played 5 years parttime you know you go to the field you don’t know if you’re going to play they might tax mat say you playing you playing tonight um but when I went there I knew I was playing every day and it just brought I
Had so much fun um it’s just U the culture I always been in love with with with with with Japan you know I’ve been in Japan um since you know my first year went to Japan I was 11 years old and I I you know the family that I stay
With took me in as one as one of their own and um you know since that I I love it I went my next time I went to Japan was in ’98 we play All-Star game against the Japanese All-Star team and then my very next the next time I win again I
Win 2006 and we play All-Star game against the Japanese side so then after that you know 2013 I’m actually playing in Japan so um I always a big fan of of of of of of Japan and and got a chance to go out there and play and and extend
My career a little bit and go there and win the championship that was the big part of it everybody my Mage to the hold said he and um you know thank you for for having me um my two years that I played there um like I said before I respect the culture of
Japanese so much um you know I I love every moment that I had a chance to to um to play there experience the countryside go different part part of of Japan that I probably would never have chance to go to um you know in such a beautiful beautiful country island um so
Um thank you for having me um I’m looking forward to see everybody back one day if uh I I make it back to Cai and um you know you know just keep continuing to root the team uh I think um you know the more better people we
Put in the office and and and on the field and and and the coaching staff um this team can be a winner um it’s a great time when when a when a City win before um they don’t forget how to how to win so um if they going if they can
Put everybody together and believe in the system um can have another championship there got M is it For Can you ask him questions slowly do you need a receipt say yes did you enjoy your St there you go
