The last names of the players read like a padres lineup card from decades ago bavaqua roberts nevin oltzka and hoffman as college summer leagues across the nation closed down the san diego league figured out safe protocols to hold its season plenty of sons of former padres were there grateful for what the league
Offered i think just being able to play baseball i mean through this crazy time during quarantine i was supposed to go to the northwoods league this summer and that got pushed back like a couple months so i kind of had to make the decision whether to play here or wait out those
Couple months and i just decided that i’d get more benefit out of playing here because i knew that there would be great competition first off and i’d be staying close to home which you can beat tora oscar the son of former padre pitcher akonori olska
Came to the u.s from japan at six years old now an outfielder for usd he’s a summer leaguer reunited with the sons of trevor hoffman quinn and wyatt was my first friend because they were the first people i met and they welcomed me into america really well like
I was able to like kind of speak english to them and that was my first interaction with i guess an american the sons of former padres are grateful to have grown up around big league clubhouses we’re so fortunate so lucky to be able to like be taught by professional athletes and just
Kind of just watch what they do and how they go about their business although they’re in college the advice from their dads is still plentiful and appreciated what i took from him was to have to be a good teammate how to be a great one how to be respected by all his teammates
And have respect give them respect back if i go over my dad always says like cole if it was easy everyone would do it just have a short memory good and bad just so you don’t get too high on the highs and too low on the lows
Just kind of keep a level ahead the brewers featured harvard shortstop quinn hoffman and brother wyatt at second the hoffman brothers played aside the son of former padre phil neville baylor university third baseman kyle nevin joined them on the brewers i didn’t really know them that well going to the
League so it was like you just kind of keep up with them though because you grew up with them and you grew up around them so it’s like oh cole’s doing this white’s doing this quinn’s doing this but actually getting to know them and be around them was is definitely special
The brewers with the hoffman’s and nevin face olska’s team the hooks in the final oscar earned a little revenge for some losses in high school being able to play against them was really fun and just kind of bring back all the like the rivalry days in the cathedral and rb games
For the sons of padres pass the san diego league was great summer competition baseball under the sun and an escape from cover it was also a welcome reunion for the kids who once played together in the padres clubhouse we’ve always kept in touch over the years but
It was kind of nice to be on the same field as them again brings back a lot of memories running around the locker room with nev with torah coley i just like all of us kind of hanging out in the locker room we were younger just bringing it back and playing on
Field together honestly would have never thought that would matter what happened oh it happened and it’s a summer the sons of padres pass will not forget
